Dog poop: Now recyclable!
greendaily.com — Scouring the backyard in search of small piles of poop is totally the worst part about having a dog. The second worst part, is that -- chances are -- you're taking something that would've naturally decayed and been absorbed by the earth, and wrapping it in plastic so it takes up space in landfill 'till the end of time.

- donttaseme, on 12/31/2007, -11/+4Yea, don't throw your ***** away.
- Rotzooi, on 12/31/2007, -17/+66I've heard you can also hire a few Brazilian girls (2, I believe) who bring a cup (1, if I am informed correctly) who are then able to somehow recycle poop.
- CrimsonFate, on 12/31/2007, -3/+5I see what you did there.
- gypsi, on 12/31/2007, -5/+2oh ***** off already
- bingobongony, on 12/31/2007, -5/+1Seriously...the joke is over. You are 34 years old and still can't see when a joke has run its course? What HAVE you done with your life?
- heartless_, on 12/31/2007, -10/+11Dog poop is about the only thing I don't compost at our house. The bacteria is just too problematic and potentially dangerous for my earth-loving soul. It actually surprises people that I don't compost it considering I compost about anything else.
- unpolloloco, on 12/31/2007, -17/+2so instead of throwing these lumps of carbon into a landfill, we compost them, putting carbon back into the environment........great idea
- computergod, on 12/31/2007, -0/+15Your ignorance is astounding. Carbon is fine unless it is in the air. Not to mention that everything organic is carbon based.
- Rikkochet, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3Right, except that CO2 *is* a byproduct of decomposition, as are lots of other nasty substances. Agree with his point or not, by wrapping it up on plastic and throwing it into a landfill we are effectively timeshifting the decay of the materials in there...
Its basically TiVo for *****. - unpolloloco, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2except for the fact that decaying organic matter releases CO2
- Ebulating, on 12/31/2007, -1/+1Yeh, EXACTLY as much as was taken out of the atmosphere when the organic matter was created. No NET change.
- unpolloloco, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Yes, but there would be a net DECREASE if the carbon is taken out of the environment - why its better to throw away paper than recycling it
CO2 is CO2, no matter its source. If one source is decreased, it has the EXACT SAME EFFECT as decreasing another by the same amount, no matter what the sources
- computergod, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Carbon dioxide? Are you kidding me? Guess what your breathing out right now. At least pick something like methane, that is a bit more of a concern where keeping animals is concerned.
- anononon, on 12/31/2007, -1/+9Carbon is not pollution.
- noahhoward, on 12/31/2007, -2/+3Don't let Gore hear you say that, you'll kill his chances with the Carbon Credit Scammers.
- unpolloloco, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1CO2 is - at least according to the EPA and most every environmental agency on the planet
and what exactly does poo breakdown into - CO2 (among other compounds)- anononon, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1And what gas do all plant life on this planet require to live?
CO2.
Fail theory is fail.

- Lane, on 12/31/2007, -1/+9Kudos for not putting a pic of said poo on the story.
- xyzunit, on 12/31/2007, -2/+13What a ***** idea
- Nudar, on 12/31/2007, -0/+13I've just been burying my dog's poop in the backyard. Seems like a win win situation.
- Coolkid11, on 12/31/2007, -2/+3I just let it poop in random yards when I walk.
- villium, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3That aint cool man.

- FeartheKnighted, on 12/31/2007, -1/+9We just need some Va-POO-rize and we would be all good.
- PanicAK, on 12/31/2007, -0/+5Save all your drained grease from cooking and pour it on all the piles in your yard. The dogs will come back and eat it.
- engwar, on 12/31/2007, -0/+4And then lick your face in thanks...
- Omicron, on 12/31/2007, -0/+6Our recycle bin garbage dudes are in for a surprise on Wednesday
- trenchcoat, on 12/31/2007, -0/+14I used to have a dog that recycled his own crap. He had the worst breath too.
- SEOservicesguru, on 12/31/2007, -2/+1No *****!!! lol
- Mononuclear, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2Usually when I mow the lawn the poop gets picked up. If I am bagging the grass it gets put in the bag of grass clippings.. if not then it gets cut up in little pieces and put back on the lawn..
- anononon, on 12/31/2007, -0/+5Just dry the turds in the sun and put it in your bbq instead of lava rocks.
- brroha1, on 12/31/2007, -2/+0I didn't see dog poop on the approved list of recyclables in my town. But what do I know?
- bungholio989, on 12/31/2007, -1/+0id like this , less landfill space, but is it worth steppin in smelly dog poo all the time.
if u figure out how to make dog poo un smelly then people wouldnt pick it up - hulez, on 12/31/2007, -1/+1im just sitting here drinkin my milk. 2L to be exact. and the bottle is made out of recycled material........oh wait!
- AROZ, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2In Toronto there's a container households get for this. You can also throw food waste and soiled paper tissues in it.
- Furkle, on 12/31/2007, -1/+2you aren't supposed to put pet waste in those...
- AROZ, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Evidently, you never read any official materials on the topic:

- adscorp, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3He called the ***** poop!
- tanside, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2help me people, is it spelled "turd" or "terd" or is it simply personal preference?
- spectre_25gt, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2I'm pretty sure it's turd. "Terd" just doesn't look right.
- trenchcoat, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2Tird
- HalfGiraffe, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1If you're referring to poop it's "turd". If you want to say "typical nerd" you can use "terd".
- ibdivn, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1ORRRRR.You could get paper bags and the it won't out live you!
- linkerjpatrick, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1I just toss it behind the fence into the "no man's land."
- mehan, on 12/31/2007, -1/+1how dumb must one be to not know this?
- chugger1992, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3FTA:
"...Fido's feces is full of E coli, salmonella, and some other unpleasant bacteria..."
Then.. we compost it? I don't know about you, but I love E.Coli tomatoes - Skooma714, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3I don't get why people don't like it. In some countries (I believe Mexico too) human waste is used as fertilizer.
I'm sure some of it has been imported to the US.- unpolloloco, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1one little thing: E Coli
I believe there have been just a few recalls over that pesky bacteria - all because of using poo as fertilizer - funkydude101, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1as hard as it is to believe. this is more common then you think. I'm sure it's done in the states too because I know for a fact they do it in some places in canada. But the thing is, it is HIGHLY treated. So you won't have any e. coli that survives.
- unpolloloco, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1one little thing: E Coli
- funkydude101, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Well maybe since the plastic bag is already in existence, the dog poop is helping it by providing a means to decompose quicker with growing bacteria in a land fill.
- bbarnhart, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2Composting dog feces or any other animal feces that consumes other animals is a bad idea. If you must compost it, compost it separately from plant compost. When it's composted, bury in yard. Bad stuff.
- corkdorkdan, on 12/31/2007, -0/+4What a crappy piece of blog spam. Why not link to the article that actually tells you how to compost the stuff?
http://www.plentymag.com/features/2007/12/the_gree ...- bingobongony, on 12/31/2007, -2/+1Why not link to the oriignal artcile and not the blog spam? The whole reason Digg EXISTS these days (since about a year or so ago) is for crappy blogs to make money off blogspam. they are really doing a service if you think about it. Think of all the people that would have no other way to earn a living without Digg. People with ZERO job skills...nothing to offer potential employers. And digg keeps them off the welfare rolls.
- martoq, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Wait, wasn't this a movie?
- aznhomig, on 12/31/2007, -1/+2I think just bagging and throwing it away is easier than building your own composter.
- MrTea, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1suckers
I just flush it down the toilet- hadak, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Yes. You pick up your dog's ***** and flush it.
- MrTea, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1What, are you too much of a pussy to do it?
- hadak, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1No. I just call shenanigans.
- MrTea, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1What, are you too much of a pussy to do it?
- hadak, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Yes. You pick up your dog's ***** and flush it.
- djdavey, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2dugg for the cute pooch pic.
- charlietuna, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3Composting ***** ain't as easy as composting leaves. You need to maintain the correct pH, temperature and correct oxygen levels. If it goes anaerobic, the pH can drop due to carboxy acids forming. Best if you have a largish plot of land so you can encourage earthworms and other organisms to finish the job. Really not something to be tried casually next to your porch. Also, raw feces is a nasty source of pathogenic bacteria and non-point pollution, which you don't want rinsing directly into streams upping the nitrogen and BOD. I know, I'm a killjoy. The more I think about this the dumber it sounds. Best to flush it down the toilet where a real waste treatment plant can do aerobic, then anaerobic treatment.
- wilf_brim, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1I use poop bags that are biodegradeable then chuck them into the trash.
- bingobongony, on 12/31/2007, -2/+1Recycling is all well and good and all, but we need to find more ways to REUSE things. Recycling takes energy. Reusing is much better.
- NationalistROC, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1How do you reuse dog poo?
- bingobongony, on 12/31/2007, -1/+1I never claimed to have all the answers.

- sgjalan, on 12/31/2007, -3/+0cxzcxzczxc
- dbcalo, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1dog ***** is naturally recyclable as in fertilizer.
- MCCULLAH, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1yea wtf. Dog ***** is biodegradable. Its called throw it in a garden or by a plant you want to grow *****~
- Carburetor, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1There's a neighborhood, pretty close to where i live, people are throwing their junk out of the window.
They don't have any respect to themselves or to others, so I'm letting them live in their own *****, including my dog's one..
It actually makes me smile when i see my dog's ***** is all over their place.
But when i take her to the park, or to other places where civilized people live, i pick it up. - gnatd, on 12/31/2007, -0/+0The conventional wisdom is that there are potential diseases in the dog feces (toxoplasmosis) and that garden composts don't get hot enough to eradicate them. Making using dog feces in your garden a piss poor idea.
- HalfGiraffe, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Last night on tv some standup comic said chihuahuas were dogs for lazy people. You should hold it outside your window and squeeze.
