- relevant, on 10/07/2008, -2/+21i'm sure you're a real charmer
- Revolutionista, on 10/07/2008, -6/+18Infectious disease is already the leading cause of death worldwide. I personally don't believe the theory of global warming is solely responsible for the sudden rate increase.
- dppgroup, on 10/08/2008, -5/+17The average temperature of earth has gone down the last 8 years, I thought warming means going up....
- Evildudetx, on 10/08/2008, -4/+13Another wonderful fear-mongering article. Wasn't avian flu supposed to be the end of the world years ago? In 5 years, less than 300 cases world wide.
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -16/+23Ah yes, blame it all on global warming. Crimes gone up as well thanks to blardy Global Warming.
- VelvetEvolver, on 10/08/2008, -2/+9Madagascar has closed its ports.
- SitPoMk, on 10/07/2008, -12/+18It seems like everything in the world is going wrong and it all is a product global warming.
My dog shat on my shoes last night. Thanks to global warming. - jojopumpkin, on 10/07/2008, -8/+14Thank you Global Warming, I'm sorry I didn't get you anything.
- AlbinoRaven, on 10/08/2008, -2/+8Disease tends to spread because of population density and poor hygenic conditions. Pointing the finger at global warming is like pointing the finger at all queers cause AIDS. While some folks would like to think so, it's not necessarily true.
Stop drinking the koolaid, it's obviously making you feel funny. - ReggieNoble, on 10/08/2008, -3/+8Also, Bush. Bush is to blame.
- angryredplanet, on 10/08/2008, -2/+6Climate is defined as normalised temperature data over a long time span (typically 30 years). This is done to remove "noisy" data, such as that you are cherry picking, probably without even realising it. This process has been satisfying skeptics and shafting deniers such as yourself since 1986.
To paraphrase in simple terms so that you can understand and absorb it: Temperature != Climate
That clue was for free. - Swarms, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4Ah Global Warming - The El Nino for a new generation.
- Pedestrian101, on 10/08/2008, -4/+8Hate to break it to you.... but the world cooled last year...
- partrow, on 10/08/2008, -2/+6Do you mean "climate change" ? There are also many benefits of this warming spell, which the article somehow missed.
- dilbert, on 10/07/2008, -3/+7Isn't it because we 'need' to travel to exotic countries and bring back pathogens as a bonus?
FTA:"Among phrases, people said they were "under the weather" when ill, he noted."
Yeah, back in those days they thought one could get a cold because of the cold weather. Hence, "under the weather".
Must be a slow news day for the NYTimes. - oveedrx, on 10/08/2008, -0/+3dugg, for that impossible game
- monoa, on 10/08/2008, -2/+5You can call it "junk science" when you prove that the science is... junk. Once you've done that, contact every national science academy of every major industrialised country on the planet, all of whom confirm that recent climate change is due to human activity.

Once you've explained to them where they've all gone wrong you can pick up your Nobel Prize along with worldwide fame and fortune. - Volatile36, on 10/08/2008, -4/+7Actually, global warming can cause more extreme winters... Now, had this weather happened in the middle of summer, you'd have a point, but more than likely, all of these places had record setting summer heat.
- norman619, on 10/08/2008, -0/+3Stupidity and ignorance FTW!!
- Volatile36, on 10/08/2008, -0/+3***** MADAGASCAR!
The ports got closed once within a week. I had no visibility. Impossible... - mbtria, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2Many of what we now think of as "tropical" diseases were endemic to temperate zones. Such diseases were controlled, and even eliminated in many areas by sanitation and other Public Health methods. In terms of a resurgence of such disease in areas now free of them, we have far more to fear in terms of reduced Public Health disease suppression budgets, and complacency, than we do in any increase in temperature.
As an example, malaria was indigenous to the native biota in most of the United States through the early 20th century. Such areas include New York City and Long Island, NY. The near elimination of malaria in such areas is primarily the result of mosquito control, and certainly not of climate change. - Guardiandevil91, on 10/07/2008, -3/+5half man, half bear, half pig.
- angryredplanet, on 10/08/2008, -1/+3You know, norman619, the first part of your post was logical, well thought out and I agreed with you, but then you wrecked it with denier-ism.
"Also, let's also not forget that GLOBAL temps stopped rising in the 90's and have actually started to DROP. But yeah don't let the truth get in the way of a good scare mongering story."
No. Please understand that there was a record-breaking high temperature spike in 1998, due to the most intense El Nino year on record. Temps have since subsided from that year but the climatic trend - and remember that one or two freaky years does not constitute "climate" - is still rising faster than at any time directly recorded in human history. Climate is defined as normalised temperature data over a 30 year timespan to remove "noisy" data in order to satisfy skeptics and shaft deniers such as yourself.
To paraphrase in simple terms so that you can understand and absorb it: Temperature != Climate - LingNoi, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2Lame stories, thanks to global warming.
- inactive, on 10/08/2008, -2/+4*cough* ***** *cough*
"He played on our fears!" - Al Gore - inactive, on 10/08/2008, -2/+4And here I was thinking that diseases spread globally because of airline travel and the migration of people from poverty stricken ***** holes to here. Good thing we have the good old NYT to set us rednecks straight with some solid junk science.
I reckon I'd better stay out of Florida since warmth will make me sick. - biogears, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2Peace be upon you my friend, Obama will come...
- chrissku, on 10/08/2008, -1/+3Can we please get some good ***** news for once? It feels like the world is crumbling around us.
- Volatile36, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2Some plaster will fix that right up.
- JakeParker, on 10/08/2008, -5/+7"China has had its coldest winter in 100 years."
Go back to elementary school and learn the difference between climate and winter. I won't even bother to check your facts until you understand this.
"It snowed in Baghdad for the first time in recorded history. "
Same.
"North America had the most snow cover in the last fifty years. "
Same.
"There are record levels of Antarctic sea ice."
Same.
"There has been record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, and Chile."
Same.
"Johannesburg, South Africa, had its first significant snowfall in 26 years."
Same.
Anecdotal evidence does not science make. You will get a discussion when you understand the requisite material.
When Galileo was forced to recant his theory of heliocentricity, legend has it that he muttered "eppur si muove", Italian for "and yet it moves."
You can deny reality as much as you want, but it will never change it one iota (inb4 Nineteen Eighty-Four discussion.) - Revolutionista, on 10/08/2008, -1/+3I am not trying to field demeaning or negative responses. Why do you feel it is necessary to belittle me and my opinion? If you are asking for a little bit of ammunition, just say so:
- I am Catholic
- I do not support the theory of global warming
- I support neither McCain/Palin nor Obama/Biden
- My political philosophy and everyday thinking exist independently of one another
The fact that you took the time to respond to something I posted is appreciated. However, there is nothing in my argument that suggests that I am attempting to impose my beliefs upon others, and the fact that you would rather insult me than provide a mature response speaks volumes of your character and your treatment of complete strangers. - dppgroup, on 10/08/2008, -1/+3Avian FLU and SARS scares = Media Created Panic To Take Focus Off REALITY
- inactive, on 10/08/2008, -4/+6Time for global warming nutballs to put up or shut up.
Sell your car. Don't eat meat ever again. Sell your home and live in a 400sq ft studio apartment, Stop buying products manufactured by major corporations.
If you don't do these things - you are a hypocrite and I spit on you. I will not change anything I do and adapt to the earth as it continues to change (as its been doing for billions of years). - inactive, on 10/08/2008, -3/+5damn right. like there aren't enough taxes now these ***** want to add more. bunch of leeches.
- prophet5, on 10/08/2008, -2/+4They mean that diseases are spreading faster thanks to illegal immigrants, who don't get immunized. That's why there's a polio problem now in America. Add to that list TB, and other things that regular medical check-ups and clean living almost made disappear in America.
- monoa, on 10/08/2008, -3/+5Wrong and clueless.

just sayin. - angryredplanet, on 10/08/2008, -1/+2Your clear lack of ability to grasp a pair of fairly simple science concepts is astounding. I'm thankful that scientists make the call and not common denominator Joe six-pack types like you.

- monoa, on 10/08/2008, -2/+3When last year? Where last year? In comparison to which year?
You do understand a trend is determined by looking at multiple data points, not just one? You're not a complete moron, are you?
