- nahsrocketeer75, on 11/04/2009, -1/+30I can control the weather: Plan a cookout, watch it rain.
- snipe123, on 11/04/2009, -0/+21Yes we can manipulate the weather but not "control"
Are we sure we want to mess with this ? - BrandonJM, on 11/04/2009, -3/+17Of course we can. Haven't you heard of Cobra Commander's Weather Dominator?
- Zaxcomp, on 11/04/2009, -0/+14The answer is a resounding yes, and we've been doing it for longer than you think. This is material covered in entry level survey courses on meteorology.

- PostalPenguin, on 11/04/2009, -1/+9Its not a question of can we but should we? Humans are not very good at planning for long term consequences.
- ToksterJokster, on 11/04/2009, -3/+11Humans need to stop playing god. Stuff like this WILL come back to get us, or our kids.
- Notasheeple, on 11/04/2009, -1/+8Chemtrails combined with HAARP and........... Profit!

These are normal right?
http://www.relfe.com/Images/chemtrails%202.jpg - Spoomeister, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6I can do the same with planning to wash my car.
- baccart, on 11/04/2009, -2/+8Next time you see those X clouds/trails in the sky, observe the weather changes.
It has been going on for a while now.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_seeding - inactive, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6They already do make it rain in dry areas of the U.S. Its called cloud seeding and its just the beginning.
- Moralogic, on 11/04/2009, -2/+7We have been able to do this for years, and the government actually has technology they have been using to take advantage of doing this in war zones. It is a little bit beyond simple manipulating, but not yet to the point of control by any means. They could make a hurricane shift it's course a little bit, but not really enough to do much of importance.
Give it time though, we will be able to stop tornado soon enough, then we can build our way up from there. - Zaxcomp, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5That was banned in the 70's.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_Modific ... - Zaxcomp, on 11/04/2009, -2/+7Yes, it keeps hail out of the US's crops. It brings rain into aquifer recharge zones and lakes. Weather control is a tried and proven science of more than 60 years worth of results.
- inactive, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5yes we should be worried. whom ever controls this will undoubtedly use it wrong.
- Zaxcomp, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5No, just taking a meteorology course at university, and weather modification happened to be recent material.
- shutaro, on 11/04/2009, -2/+6What do you mean "can we"? Bill Gates has been controlling the weather for years!
- Caea, on 11/04/2009, -2/+6SuperFreakanomics outlines a cheap, easy, and safe way we can counteract global warming for something like $10 million a year. Of course Al Gore is not a big fan because it's not going to win him any more Noble prizes.
- eleete, on 11/04/2009, -5/+9No, but we can sure tax the hell out of people claiming that we can.
- kingp43, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4I watch the northern California skies get sprayed constantly, but I don't think that video or pic are going to convince anyone. poor quality stuff.
The fact these bastards are spraying chemicals into the air above us for ANY reason is concerning enough for me........... - askantik, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4SuperFreakanomics outlines a cheap, easy quick fix that will likely backfire.

These guys are economists who are severely misinforming people about the real nature of climate change and also have little (to zero) idea about the myriad of other environmental concerns.
From the NPR interview:
"Mr. LEVITT: So we're not - look, I'm not a scientist and Steven Dubner's not a scientist either, but we've managed to interact with some of the greatest scientists in this country. I think what we conclude is that the nature of the debate is just completely wrong. The real problem isn't that there's too much carbon in the air. The real problem is it's too hot."
So this guy probably thinks if we could just design a really huge air conditioner, it'd be all good. And he admits that neither of them are scientists. What a nutcase. - irishjays, on 11/04/2009, -1/+5You could plan a perfect picnic but you can't predict the weather. I'm sorry Ms. Jackson
- askantik, on 11/04/2009, -2/+6Why, FFS, do we keep getting all these ideas for quick fixes? ***** ***** ass, we have to change our lifestyles. We cannot just have one awesome technology come along and keep living our lives the same way. It just isn't that easy. And global warming is not the only problem... changing weather could affect ecosystems in other ways.
I'll probably get buried for being "anti-science" but anyone with half a brain knows we shouldn't just do ***** without THOROUGHLY investigating potential side effects and results. Easy quick fixes rarely work the way they are intended and often have unintended consequences... which can be worse than the problem they "fixed." We need to stop using so many resources and re-examine our lifestyle. I'm NOT saying we don't need technology (it can be amazingly helpful) but we need to be realistic. - Kumah, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3Freakonomics was entertaining, though provoking, and fascinating. Gave me a new outlook on things.
Superfreakonomics made me realize that the authors were nutcases and I decided to dismiss both books as crack pot theories. - askantik, on 11/04/2009, -1/+4...
SuperFreakanomics guys are retarded. Quick fixes usually do not work. - Zaxcomp, on 11/04/2009, -2/+5I'm sorry but at least in my state the only funds directly going to weather modification are for rain seeding, which seems like a worthwhile pursuit, especially during drought conditions. Hail suppression appears to only be licensed by the state, and is done at, presumably, the cost of the farmer.
Source: http://www.license.state.tx.us/weather/weathermod. ... - iopasd, on 11/04/2009, -1/+4Maybe, but it is a bad idea IMO.
- Alderon, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3Less you live in Arizona *wink*
- whiskeythief, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2Al Gore sure as hell isn't a scientist and he knows exactly how to fix it in ways that make him rich.
- KyotoWolf, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2It can also be very dangerous if wrongly used.

- Whirly5, on 11/04/2009, -1/+3If we can truly manipulate the weather.. Can we have some snow in Texas please? Just once
- Wazzuper1, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2"Warning: Weather control device detected"
- LeepII, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1A better question is "are we controlling the weather?".
- irishjays, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1I am for fake
- doctechnical, on 11/04/2009, -1/+2Have you been messing with that orgone accumulator again?
- Enterres, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1From KyotoWolf's link:
1952: "By the end of the month, North Devon, an area of England near the site of the cloud-seeding experiment, experienced 250 times the normal amount of rainfall." - butterbeau, on 11/04/2009, -1/+2Man can do much through manipulation and technology. Learning and putting it to action is what we see. Are the tsunamis and the weather disasters something man has brought on us as a nation? One day man will no longer be able to manipulate!
- o1hc, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1are you all trying to diss the flying spaghetti monster?
i hope not! he'll rain down a fury of spaghetti and meatballs! - spoon088, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Another crap quality article on Digg. Cloud seeding isn't even close to being new.
- Whirly5, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Yeah in some parts that's true. Not in Dallas. And yes good point, snow makes texans drive like 4 year olds
- whiskeythief, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1If we can't even manipulate the weather, then how in hell do we think we can trade prosperity for climate manipulation?
- pagno, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1In snows all the time in Texas. I really wish it wouldnt, tho. These people cant drive as it is.
- mkvenner420, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Yes. We've done it (by accident) all throughout history! June 6th 1942 anyone? The everyday human being is so ignorant of how his massive species which is capable of staggering feats, affects the world on a macro level on a daily basis... Now when millions of human beings on both sides of the war were working in synchrony to accompish that feat - the weather patterns were affected severely by the presence of millions of humans breathing while they were waiting, not to mention the millions of arcing shells, combustion engines burning on land and sea, iron dredged from the earth... there was a book written about this, but title and author escape me... I shall be back after scouring the interwebs...
- ampdj89, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1To stop Hurricanes? Yes.
- ToksterJokster, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1No wonder the weather has been so strange over the last 10 or so years. If you don't think we have a strong effect on the weather, I disagree. Just look at global warming. That didn't just happen, we did that.
- Ferretman, on 11/04/2009, -1/+1Yes we will be able to, and yes we should once we can.
- gankige, on 11/04/2009, -3/+3Leave that to the Koalas.
- damnshoes, on 11/04/2009, -2/+2what is god gonna do to us?
give us incurable diseases? wars? - kspanks04, on 11/04/2009, -5/+4This could cause wars, wars full of awesome weather battles.
