- Protonz, on 06/28/2009, -1/+9When something is owned by everybody it is owned by nobody. The president's decision does not sound bad from the little that is described in the article.
Why wouldn't Greenpeace & other environmental groups purchase the land at "knockdown rates"? - inactive, on 06/28/2009, -1/+8I wonder how much deforestation happened in the US.
- schnikies79, on 06/28/2009, -1/+8Biased or not, it is correct. You can check it against other sources.
Do your own homework. - Bobby1978, on 06/27/2009, -7/+13Let them do whatever the heck they want. It is their land afterall. But when the catastrophic consequences of this eventually unfolds itself decades later, and the whole world reeling from the devastating effects of climate change begin a vain and worthlessly overdue effort to rein their habits for the sake of their homes, they're going to want to find convenient scapegoats for the whole sordid mess. Brazil will be one of those countries to be put on the stand, and when that happens, the economic aftermath for it will be just as swift and quiet as this ruling.
- Junkyarddawg, on 06/28/2009, -0/+6Lula INTENDS to convert the southern half of the amazon to agricultural land, it's part of his plan to "modernize the backwards Amazonia", which also includes damming all tributaries of the Amazon, building networks of roads, and handing out leases to farmers. Deforestation is not an undesirable side effect of a policy decision as this article suggests, it IS the policy decision.
- yournightmare, on 06/28/2009, -2/+7"Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc"
--That certainly appears to be an unbiased source. - schnikies79, on 06/28/2009, -2/+7We have ~75% of the acreage in forest that we had when the United States was first colonized.
http://www.appalachianwood.org/forestry/quantity.h ... - had3l, on 06/28/2009, -2/+7It is a huge problem in Brazil. People simply take land that belong to other people or the government. And since the politicians don't have the guts to remove them by force, they are allowed to stay. Eventually, if they stay there long enough, some politician looking for votes will eventually legalize their situation.
- shig, on 06/28/2009, -0/+4This is homesteading, not squatting.
Squatting is occupying land or a structure that is owned. Homesteading is occupying land that is unowned. Surprising they'd make such a mistake in the land of John Locke, Daniel Defoe, and the homestead principle. - jboitnott, on 06/27/2009, -1/+5If we make it that far.
- kent1146, on 06/28/2009, -2/+5From the title, I thought it had something to do with domain names.
Hrmph. - opticwind, on 06/28/2009, -1/+4I don't understand your point...what?
- 3tcp, on 06/28/2009, -1/+4With any luck, hippies will flock to the brazil & the amazon to live in trees and gain land rights to save the forests
- Bodhinature, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2Yeah, its been a huge problem. Remember when the Portuguese were squatting in the Amazon and the Indios didn't have the political will to remove them by force? Yeah, those were great times.
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -1/+3Bye bye Amazonian rainforest.
- SyuRi, on 06/28/2009, -1/+3It's their land, but it's our planet.
- opitica, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2i always hated that place, so hoity toity with their oxygen.
- Drull, on 06/28/2009, -1/+3For some reason, the headline made me think of Amazon.com.
I'm losing it. - rowbot, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
- waspbr, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1aw crap
- dikky, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1burn the land boil the seas
- ZenMojo, on 06/28/2009, -1/+2Old growth or young growth? Young growth forests can't sustain the same biomes as old growth forests, nor do they have the same oxygen output.
Just saying. - Swivelstick, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1What do you mean start they've almost finished..
- SQLDigger, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Isn't that simply awful, wanting to modernize his country to improve the quality of life for his country's citizens and compete in the global economy? Damn him and such.
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -2/+2Barack Obama has reportedly tapped Brazil's president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to be the next head of the World Bank.

. - fragMasterFlash, on 06/28/2009, -2/+2Trade them some land for being sterilized. Overpopulation is the root of all this evil. Someone buy the pope a pack of trojans.
- opticwind, on 06/28/2009, -3/+2How would pregnancy be an issue with little boys?
- Bloodwine, on 06/28/2009, -3/+2No, people will still blame their favorite scapegoat, the U.S.
- Bloodwine, on 06/28/2009, -2/+1This makes me wonder if people will start killing others (or scaring them off) to take their land. Much easier and cheaper than legitimately buying it.
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -8/+2far be it for poor people to want urban development. let them live in the jungles, eh liberals?
