- Ecochick, on 06/01/2009, -2/+18as a frequent flyer (guilty!) this is good news. I don't want to destroy the planet so that I can see it!
- nepidae, on 06/02/2009, -1/+15how much co2 is released creating these biofuels? Remember the ethanol scam?
- inactive, on 06/01/2009, -1/+14This is brilliant news really. Due to our isolation, all flights from New Zealand are long - infact, some them are the longest flights you can take from anywhere to anywhere.
Sadly though, I expect the savings will never reflect in the ticket prices - jerryjamesstone, on 06/02/2009, -1/+11I hope this does become price effective, we need the savings - planet wise.
- f0dder, on 06/02/2009, -1/+10It lowers CO2 emissions by over 60%?? This claim seems ridiculously high, especially since it's a 50:50 blend.
One thing I'd like to know is about how much acreage of land we're talking about to support a fleet of 747's - solboldi, on 06/01/2009, -1/+7Coolness..literally.
- stoanhart, on 06/02/2009, -1/+5"The biofuel was produced from Jatropha seeds grown on “environmentally sustainable farms.” A second generation biofuel, jatropha is grown on land that doesn’t compete with food. It requires almost no care and very little water. Another major benefit of jatropha is that, due to its ability to take hold in harsh wastelands, it can be used to help stop erosion in these areas and reclaim them for agricultural production."
Sounds like a pretty useful plant. We need more Jatropha, hemp, and algae farms. - h8f8kes, on 06/02/2009, -3/+5Dugg for not consuming the worlds food supply.
- sngx1275, on 06/02/2009, -1/+3Interesting. I can believe the CO2 cut, kind of. NOx emissions should also go down from using biofuel. But I am surprised to see an increase in efficiency, typically biofuels contain less energy per same volume... maybe the biofuel in this case is more dense (I don't know much about jatropha).
- Trent1492, on 06/02/2009, -3/+5"So what is so bad about CO2 anyway, (other than junk science)?"
The dose makes the poison.
"We breathe it out and plants breathe it in; will plants die with this?"
Straw Man argument. No one but septics make this claim.
"Let's warm the Earth by 0.05 degrees in 100 years. It's a good thing."
We are not talking about "0.05 degrees in 100 years". Do you think it might be time you spent less time on Digg and more reading what the scientist themselves are saying? How about you go to the peer reviewed journals such as Nature, Science, etc and read what is being said. - bipolarruledout, on 06/02/2009, -0/+2Flight is still ridiculously inefficient but somewhat comparable to single occupant ground travel in the best cases.
This seems to imply that 60% less Co2 was released which isn't at all the case. It's simply considered non-impactful since bio fuel is renewable. - HappyScrappy, on 06/02/2009, -0/+2To be fair, it likely cut CO2 output from non-renewable sources, not actual CO2 emissions. Which is fine, it helps us with greenhouse buildup, assuming the fuel wasn't made with energy from non-renewable sources. Which, frankly, it probably was.
BTL (the process used to make this fuel) is not considered very energy effective right now.
As another note, the plane that made this run and is in this picture is slated to be the first 747-400 torn apart for scrap other than a JAL plane that was scrapped due to a crash. - phishneslo, on 06/02/2009, -2/+3Hmmm... what about the inputs to this magic "bio-fuel"?
inputs: switchgrass, corn, and sunlight
outputs: icebergs, polar bears, and hungry Ethiopians - redxii, on 06/02/2009, -1/+2Nothing to feel guilty about, as long as you aren't the only passenger in a 747.. or flying your private jet to Washington to ask for bailout...
- CharlieShipp, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1There are unintended consequences to Liberal good intentions.
- lincolnparkx, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1plane companies are going to be in a pricewar for a long time.. good for us
- ctech4285, on 06/02/2009, -1/+2numbers without anything too back them up. smells like ***** burried!
- diggydougie, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1Well, Kerosene comes from the ground and the plants have to be cultivated. So expect a premium.
- Atario, on 06/03/2009, -0/+1Ethanol is not a scam. *Corn* ethanol is.
- Legoman513, on 06/02/2009, -1/+2Nifty, but we need to see what goes into (and comes out of) making the biofuel itself before we can rejoice.
- TheMoniker, on 06/02/2009, -1/+2"The true scientists (not Algore) are saying Earth has cooled for past ten years."
Well, no, you forgot to check the expiry date on this argument before you used it. See, it's predicated on the (rather disingenuous) tactic of cherry picking the warm El Nino in '98 as the start date, which is more than 10 years ago now, so the overall trend is warming. At any rate, 10 years is too short a period because of the fluctuations present in ENSO events and the PDO. Here's the temperature data, if you want it:
http://www.cru.uea.ac.uk/cru/data/temperature/hads ... - Trent1492, on 06/02/2009, -1/+2Do you have primary evidence that the world's geophysicists are in engaged in fraud?
- ClearVista, on 06/02/2009, -1/+2Just read an article in National Geographic that states the amount of corn needed to create 25 gallons of ethanol could feed a person for a whole year. Seems to me some people in this world don't quite have their priorities straight.
- bipolarruledout, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1Bio fuels don't necessarily cost less.
- Trent1492, on 06/02/2009, -1/+2Here is the transcript for "An Inconvenient Truth." Please show me these lies using the transcript and a peer reviewed source.
http://global-warming-truth.com/environmental-tv-m ... - bipolarruledout, on 06/02/2009, -0/+11.2% is likely not statistically significant. You can fly x number of flights with conventional fuels and some are going to use less or more depending on flight conditions.
- TheMoniker, on 06/02/2009, -1/+2Of course not. Who needs evidence when you can just slander all of the world's scientists working in some area of research with random, baseless accusations?
- bipolarruledout, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1Fuel cost does impact business cost but cost does not necessarily reflect final price.
- estebancortez, on 06/02/2009, -1/+1A great breakthrough in both aviation and fuel technology! This will hopefully lead to the proliferation of such technology rather than the marginalizing of it by large petroleum producing companies. On that subject check out the discussion on http://www.meettheboss.com/Discussion.aspx?discuss ... where many industry professionals are conversing on this subject and providing insightful contributions to the discourse on renewal energy and fuel.
- phishneslo, on 06/02/2009, -1/+1inputs: switchgrass, corn, and sunlight
outputs: icebergs, polar bears, and hungry Ethiopians - miket, on 06/02/2009, -0/+0source?
- cashmonkey, on 06/02/2009, -2/+2Not really. Many people are destined to die from the effects of climate change, droughts and wars over resources. Maybe Americans could just eat less then there would be food for all.
- Okinsley, on 06/02/2009, -2/+2Honestly, i dont give a ***** about CO2. literally. you all may think that buying enviroment friendly cars is a good thing, but i bet most of yall wont jump on that if you saw the price tag.
All this green energy, ethanol crap thats going around, im just SICK of it. - dts7714, on 06/02/2009, -1/+1bout fricking time also how much is a ticket gonna cost???
- poitsplace, on 06/02/2009, -1/+1If anyone's ever bothered to look up the yields the'd find that there isn't enough arable land on the face of the earth to meet our fuel needs (mostly automobile of course) with biofuel. Plants are cheap collectors of solar energy...but they're horribly inefficient.
- TheMoniker, on 06/02/2009, -1/+1For those genuinely interested in the science behind global warming:
http://www.ipcc.ch/ipccreports/ar4-wg1.htm
Despite what random posters might state on digg, the theoretical structure underpinning global warming is well supported by essentially the entire field of climate science, thousands upon thousands of research articles in peer reviewed scientific journals. If anyone is curious, I urge them to either spend an afternoon reading through the Journal of Climate or to call up and talk to several climate researchers near them, at their local university or climate research center. - Travelsonic, on 06/02/2009, -2/+2FTA:

- kingChard, on 06/02/2009, -1/+0What would you do with out New Zealand :)
- CharlieShipp, on 06/02/2009, -2/+0"Global Warming" and now "Climate Change" by humans is a Giant Hoax for your Tax $$. FYI.
- CharlieShipp, on 06/02/2009, -2/+0The British have their Liberal BBC but still require “the other side” be presented when Algore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” movie is shown. This is because of Big Lies in the movie.
Have you read the more scientific book, “An Inconvenient Book”?
Or better still the scientific book, “The Really Inconvenient Truths” On the cover it says, “Seven Environmental Catastrophes Liberals Don’t Want You To Know About -- Because They Helped Cause Them.”
The bigger the lies, the harder they fall. - CharlieShipp, on 06/02/2009, -2/+0The true scientists (not Algore) are saying Earth has cooled for past ten years.
- CharlieShipp, on 06/02/2009, -4/+2 So what is so bad about CO2 anyway, (other than junk science)?

...and a reduction of worldwide food supplies of 20%. - dpbBryan, on 06/02/2009, -7/+1***** THE RIAA!
