- wefarrell, on 05/08/2008, -3/+20A sailboat can sail around the world faster (54 as opposed to 74 days) without emitting any co2 and it doesn't raise food prices.
http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/news/story?id=320 ... - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+16I think the coolest part about this boat is that it can dive 23 feet underwater and keep going. It's actually made to cut through waves instead of going over them.
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -2/+11Maybe you're being dugg down because the answer to your question was in the dammed article. "Parts of the boat are made from a hemp-based composite, bedding foams are made from canola oil, and the operation’s total carbon footprint has been balanced by purchasing carbon credits."
- wertach, on 05/08/2008, -0/+8"the operation’s total carbon footprint has been balanced by purchasing carbon credits"
Carbon credits are lame, send me the money for "carbon credits" I will buy solar panels, and quit driving, kick back and farm (carbon free of course). - lpmiller, on 05/08/2008, -0/+7And won't reek of french fries.
- RanIntoTheDevil, on 05/08/2008, -1/+8Isn't Biodiesel a hydrocarbon? As in produces carbon dioxide when combusted? There seems to be a misconception that it and other alternative fuels cannot pollute the environment.
- choopie911, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6We tried, but they told us "harnessing the power of the wind is the work of the gods"
- Scott31182, on 05/08/2008, -1/+7Thats a heck of a boat
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5Has anyone told these people about the renewable resource of wind?
- jeexbit, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5Bio Diesel is cool and all, but it would be awesome if someone came up with a way to get a boat around the world using no fuel at all, but just using, say WIND or something.... well we can dream....
- akkibaba, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/may ...
Biodiesel does not have to be made from corn in order for it to be harmful to us .I only mentioned corn as an example. My point was that this is diverting land and resources away from growing crops as food. - kindablue, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5I didn't even know the globe was jewish
- ghostfish, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4If you knew anything about rogue waves you'd know they can be 100 feet or more.
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4I wanna ride!
- redcolumbine, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4Mother preserve us, it's BEAUTIFUL!
- dhVyse, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4Cool boat, but carbon credits are complete *****.
- fulibs, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4Thank god for carbon credits.
- hagis, on 05/08/2008, -1/+4but extracting the Oil from soy does not destroy the soy protein .. it can also be extracted at the same time so you do not loose as much as say Ethanol. Bio Diesel is much better than Ethanol could ever dream of being.
- mrinsanity, on 05/08/2008, -3/+6Ron Paul 2008!
*something about biodiesel* - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3There are many eco-freindly elements to earthrace. Following are some examples:
* Earthrace runs sustainably produced B100 biodiesel ( + more )
* Parts of Earthrace are made from hemp composite, a world first for boats
* The antifoul is a new non-toxic type (most are heavy metal or iso-cyanate based)
* Lubricants are made from vegetable oils
* Bedding foams are made from canola oil
* Bilge water is pumped through special filters to remove any oil or hydrocarbon
* Recycled ice cream containers were used during construction
* MDF board used during construction were reused by local schools
* The crew eat organic foods and local foods wherever possible
* The entire project is run as carbon neutral, by calculating CO2 emissions and purchasing carbon credits to balance this
* Our waste is generally recycled
* crew clothes are mostly made from hemp and bambo - JESUSREAM, on 05/08/2008, -2/+5F U poor people. We need fast boats with your crops.
- ethomas046, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3It’s been described as “a rally car but for oceans”, with the ability to submerge up to 23 feet underwater while powering through the ocean....
Woah - mojo8472, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3Biodiesel really is awesome! I run my 306 on it, only 75p/litre round here too! Best of all, makes my exhaust smell like chips!
- RanIntoTheDevil, on 05/08/2008, -2/+5Fields and resources that could be used to grow food crops would be used to grow crops for biodiesel. That's how.
- skidooer, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3Plants need carbon to grow. That carbon is released back into the atmosphere, but the process is net zero; not the same as zero.
- wherley, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3The difference is the age of the carbon being sent into the atmosphere. If it is carbon that has been "out of circulation" for millions of years, you have environmental CO2 inflation. If it is carbon from last years rapeseed crop then you have normal environmental circulation.
- shortyjacobs, on 05/08/2008, -1/+3What do you make biodiesel out of, exactly?
Commercially, you can't do it with left over grease....the easiest way to do it is with OIL, like CORN oil, or SOYBEAN oil. And then, you use alcohol, (like ethanol, but usually methanol cuz it's cheaper), to catalyze the reaction. So quit posting the same stupid ***** 10 times in a single comment thread before you know what the hell you're talking about. - mkrfctr, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2wtf is up with their website, the last attempt they had all sorts of blog updates as they went ... they haven't updated them in months and months as I've been checking back to see when they'd actually start their second attempt... I'm disappointed; following the first attempt was captivating, especially with all the drama (new technology carbon fiber props shredded due to cavitation, engine half blowing up, running over a skiff with 1 death as a result, being detained, going on trial, being freed, and finally the boat taking a pounding and having a section of the bottom ripped out and the boat leaking - forced to return to port for repairs) - also the ground crew blogs were good, having to arrange parts deliveries, dealing with various customs and port officials and their varying levels of cooperation... etc.
- akkibaba, on 05/08/2008, -1/+3It's true, bio-fuels from higher plants is BS. The simpler the plant, the higher the efficiency. We should really be using algae for biofuel synthesis, not corn.
- Mr8lack, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2I'll give you three Shrute Bucks™ for your carbon credits.
- Hangingtree, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Why are people so retarded?
If a rogue wave is 100 feet high and this boat smashes through it, that would mean at the point it is trying to go through the wave the boat itself will be 100 feet under water. You know, the wave being 100 feet high and all. - wherley, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Ethanl, Methanol, and Biodiesel are three different things. Biodiesel is either a Methyl-Ester or an Ethyl-Esters. Biodiesel is never made from Ethanol mixed with Methanol.
- ghank, on 05/08/2008, -5/+7Don't know why you got dugg down, it's a valid question. every component in this boat had to be manufactured somewhere.
- Gromdul, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2They claim it is net zero carbon emissions. The carbon it is releasing was taken up from that atmosphere by the plants that make up the fuel. So while it is emitting CO2, the plants that fuel it remove CO2 from the atmosphere.
- pantamonkey, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2I saw this in Wired about a year ago, 2.5 gallons of the fuel were made from the crew's lyposuctioned fat. Tasty. http://blog.wired.com/cars/2007/12/around-the-worl ...
- DetpackJump, on 05/08/2008, -1/+3From the boat's site: "What is biodiesel?Biodiesel is a diesel fuel substitute produced from renewable sources such as canola and soya bean."...Both canola and soya beans are used as food.
- Aanidaani, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Meanwhile people are starving because of skyrocketing prices of grain and corn caused by diverting half the supply into biofuels...
- mrtrevin, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2It's still a sweet ass boat.
- stargatesteve, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2I'm currently connected to digg, and my compy is run by wind/solar power...
- skidooer, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2The carbon absorbed as the plant grows is equal to the carbon it will release when burned. Hence no carbon was added to the atmosphere and thus it is considered carbon neutral.
- nosliwm, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Strange but true, they had a collision off the coast of Guatemala with a small fishing boat on what I think was an earlier attempt and killed a guy.
http://www.powerandmotoryacht.com/boat-design/eart ... - konspence, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1A sweet ass-boat you mean?
- konspence, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Do you care to elaborate?
That's a large claim with nothing but an opinion backing it. - nydwarf, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1I heard this boat runs on Dolphins...
- konspence, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Biodiesel is made from plants. Sure, it emits carbon dioxide when it's burned, but an equal amount was absorbed by the plants that make it.
Biodiesel from animal tallow is, however, a contributer to carbon dioxide, because animals create carbon dioxide as well as the fuel. - redscofield, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Just don't go by Somalia... those pirates can be a bitch!!!
- konspence, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Both of which do not interfere with the food cycle.
Soybeans are still used for food when their oil is extracted, and canola is similar (or not even food-based). - mkrfctr, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1EDIT: ah, I guess earthrace.com vs earthrace.net matters, funny why, they were updating the .com up until a few months ago... oh well, earthrace.net it is... time to read up :-)
- HayString, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1It's kinda like the turtle and the hare.
