- kiiwii, on 08/09/2008, -6/+74Really? I wonder why this hasn't been covered in the news already!
- duckyinc, on 08/09/2008, -8/+69No surprise after 20k fireworks yesterday
- sodariot, on 08/09/2008, -11/+66Beijing - BEST opening ceremony in history.
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -23/+66I still don't know why the athletes apologized for wearing face masks. Who cares if they're offended?
- TheJimid, on 08/08/2008, -0/+35They already tried that....
- wonderchemist, on 08/08/2008, -7/+33Rice, still worth more than the US dollar!
- Iztikeit, on 08/09/2008, -1/+26It's offensive to have disdain for breathing in toxic air?
People suffer because of that stuff. How can anyone defend that? - inactive, on 08/09/2008, -2/+24sigh really? Just figuring that out?
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -13/+35Oh the weather! I thought it was just the amount of steroids that were being passed out.
- skunkman62, on 08/09/2008, -6/+27just a reminder to the hip and cool iphone users...you are part of the problem.
- Orion1004, on 08/08/2008, -7/+28Maybe this will help drive home the importance of emissions control and managing the planet's carbon footprint.
- snafflepaffle, on 08/09/2008, -5/+24Assuming you are an American, you have no leg to stand on for any of those three points.
- Fanboy88, on 08/09/2008, -3/+19IMHO, I thought the opening ceremonies were spectacular, the best ever. I think it will be a long time before that gets topped.
- DeLtAIjK, on 08/09/2008, -3/+191. Bush is killing the planet and doesn't care
2. Bush is mistreating the Constitution (and therefore, the people) and doesn't care
3. We are hogging world resources and most of us don't care
Oops. - OswaldKenobi, on 08/09/2008, -3/+17Pollution aside, China would have to go a long way to present a worse Olympics than Atlanta, which has the title of worst Olympics ever, did.
- hartley, on 08/09/2008, -1/+15No no no. The Chinese government has said themselves that this is not smog, its "mist".
- jeffness, on 08/09/2008, -21/+33I am most certainly a proud american, but let me just say that we (the US) are more responsible for Beijing's smog than they are. Our economy is the cause of their pollution as we consume so much stuff.
So, by technicality, the US is responsible for the 3 most polluted olympic games. Don't hold it against China because they were willing to manufacture stuff for us. - IEatBrains, on 08/09/2008, -2/+14What? If they didn't, another producer would be willing to take up the cup to meet demand.
- fpaudon, on 08/09/2008, -3/+13America uses more resources than China, even though its population is 25% that of China. nice.
- jpop, on 08/09/2008, -1/+11Also drives home the fact that no matter how much you scrimp and conserve and work to reduce the carbon footprint, China will totally crush all your gains and then some...
- UMDWei, on 08/09/2008, -6/+15I'm surprised Wired would post something inaccurate just to get hits. Numerous commentaries have said while the air is not ideal there, the "gray" look is more from humidity than from pollutants.
Another jogger said that jogging 10 miles in Beijing didn't hurt him at all, unlike jogging in Los Angeles. - ZeeZee2k, on 08/09/2008, -0/+9Maybe they were joking, have you thought about that?
- philhatesyou, on 08/09/2008, -2/+10"I'm surprised Wired would post something inaccurate just to get hits."
Please tell me this is sarcasm, especially after the article about the scientific method being obsolete. - CAisBacK, on 08/09/2008, -1/+8***** why does it always has to be about China?
- IEatBrains, on 08/09/2008, -1/+8WHY SO SERIOUS?!
- dannyboy3020, on 08/09/2008, -1/+8Do you understand jokes?
- kingUssop, on 08/09/2008, -1/+7Wow, how many times is the media going to run the same story with no new information?
- DNABeast, on 08/10/2008, -1/+7I wonder how much of that pollution was created in the interest of shipping cheaper products to us. Turn out that you're part of the problem.
- fuzzmeister, on 08/09/2008, -2/+8This is now 2 days old, it'd be nice to see a current story.
- stuma9000, on 08/09/2008, -0/+6Yes, China is where the world has outsourced it's pollution to. Wolferz above shows a lack of understanding of world politics. If China didn't produce goods at the cheapest possible rate, with little environmental and labour controls, then the US and the rest of the world would buy from which ever third-world nation did.
- Osirus1156, on 08/09/2008, -0/+6Actually its not from there. See the mountains around China keep the winds from removing the pollution as fast as it would without them, it recycles the pollution back into China instead.
- mrminty, on 08/10/2008, -2/+7That really didn't make any sense...
- ChromaVita, on 08/09/2008, -2/+7It'd be interesting to see which countries use up the most resources per capita. They do use resources, but they also have so many people. I'd wager that the US uses a lot more resources per capita than China or pretty much any other country. If they have a fifth of the world's population, shouldn't they be able to have more resources?
- wolferz, on 08/09/2008, -2/+7If orded to shoot a man or lose my job and I shoot the person, who's fault is it that he got shot? Mine. I could have been fired, or even shot myself, and perhaps he would have just been shot by some one else... but at least then it wouldn't have been my fault.
China made the decision to ignore pollution issues till they were so far out of hand that years of working on the issue has not yielded a solution, not the US. Yes the US could have gone elsewhere, and by not doing so they encouraged the practice, but China could have chosen to be more careful to begin with. The fault still lies entirely with China.
I get sick and tired of people thinking some how, some way, the person who chose a specific course of action is not responsible for that course of action. It's ALWAYS the fault of the person who committed the action, cause he always has the choice not to. - Iztikeit, on 08/10/2008, -0/+5You can be the biggest hypocrite in the entire world and still be correct.
- Epik, on 08/10/2008, -2/+7Nobody asked for an apology. But it was an embarrassing ordeal on behalf of the Americans so the USOC probably asked them to do it. Because the international community as a whole agrees that it was extremely disrespectful and in poor taste.
I'm sorry you guys are such idiots but it's not about wearing masks. It's the fact that they decided to put them on not on the plane -- which is hours of recycled air -- but right when they arrived at the largest airport in the world and knew the media and Chinese fans would be waiting for them. - ieee, on 08/10/2008, -0/+5A better analogy is if some slobs who kept their house in poor conditions invited people over for a party, found out they couldn't clean it up and got offended when people had problems with their mess.
- OswaldKenobi, on 08/10/2008, -0/+4That was horrible, but not the total fault of the host city. Athletes being disqualified because they couldn't get to the events due to traffic problems in the city is completely Atlanta's fault. When the president of the Olympic committee publicly chastises a city, it's pretty friggin bad.
- Fanboy88, on 08/09/2008, -3/+7I surprised people are not whining about the drugged up athletes.
There is air pollution in Beijing. There is also serious air pollution in LA, Fresno, Cairo, Delhi, Calcutta, and Mexico City.
This is old news. - Amorn, on 08/09/2008, -4/+83-2-1 Everybody let's disses china! woo hoo! the new baddie of the 21st century! Let's put them in COD5!
Seriously, I'm so sick of people going on and on and one about Tibet. Killing the planet and doesn't care? give me a break, the same could be said about just about any major industrial countries like N.America, Russia etc. Hogging world resources? Really? who's the biggest user of oil? Not china that's who. - DiggRage, on 08/09/2008, -1/+5This is why America should have laws preventing companies from importing products from anywhere in the world that does not follow pollution standards. This would be an example of the government regulating business to allow free market capitalism to work without the damage that unregulated capitalism can cause. A win-win for democracy and capitalism, humanity, and the world in general.
- duckyinc, on 08/09/2008, -1/+5When you have to say it, it means we don't really care.
- siglesias, on 08/10/2008, -0/+4that was munich (the latter)
- djm19, on 08/10/2008, -1/+5Beijing is a lot more polluted than los angeles
- DifferentAngle, on 08/09/2008, -3/+7your comment embodies digg
- TheJimid, on 08/08/2008, -4/+8animal farts?
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -2/+5Don't lie China about your air quality.
- boester, on 08/10/2008, -0/+3AP tests are out of 6 now?
- inactive, on 08/10/2008, -2/+5I think... that was sarcasm.
