- inactive, on 06/04/2008, -1/+36Since when does being aware of blogs and social networks make you tech savvy? You're tech savvy if you can write your own microassembler but you're just another douche if you blog and call yourself a techie.
- redhotkurt, on 06/04/2008, -0/+9Not always true. I'm a smoker, like drugs & junk food, and I'm a big advocate for green tech. Not all of us are your stereotypical "tree hugger" hippies. Not like it matters, but I grilled a steak last week that would've knocked your socks off, man.
- benologist, on 06/04/2008, -0/+9Since when does being aware of blogs and social networks make you anything at all?
- inactive, on 06/04/2008, -3/+12I would think the number would actually be higher, considering a definite propensity of environmentalists are young people...and thus would be tech savvy.
- TheRealDeuce, on 06/04/2008, -3/+10My biggest problem with the "green" movement, is that those people fool themselves and say it's for the good of the planet, and not the good of mankind. The planet will be fine, it's us who would be in trouble.
EDIT - Also, just because you own a computer doesn't mean you're tech savvy. - inactive, on 06/04/2008, -4/+10I figured they couldn't even read, or they'd clearly see the sun is causing our warming problems. Unless our cars are also warming Mars.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4Yeah, that really isn't anything new. Since the rise of myspace, blogging and online social chatter has become a common everyday function for everyone.
- icexe, on 06/05/2008, -0/+4Sorry folks, but having an account on MySpace and Facebook does not make you "tech savvy"
- ChuqAU, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3Interesting. I live in Tasmania, home of the world's first Green party. They have a significant (still minority) share of our parliament here. We have recently had issues with the government regarding a fibre optic cable linking us to the mainland which was suffering massive delays. We made some noise about it and the only politicians to react in a positive manner were the Greens.
Now I am fairly torn, as I'm not a fan of the Greens at all, but in the whole debacle they were the only ones to listen to us and to actually understand the issues.
Funny, as they are on our side now ... but when the cable was first proposed (it is an electrical cable as well) they were completely against it! - inactive, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3Interestingly enough, the full report mentions that a lot of these people are older, rather than younger... I would suggest that a lot of the younger crowd filling this survey out would be the "Green if it suits me..." crowd.
- DaDrake, on 06/04/2008, -1/+4Are these the same people who promote Mann's hockey stick graph in the IPCC 3rd report... despite it being close to (if not) scientific fraud?
- MindTrigger, on 06/04/2008, -1/+4Try as you will, you are not something other than your environment. You and your environment are one and the same because without your environment, you cannot live. We are no different from trees in this way, except that we are not rooted to the ground. Even in space we have to take an artificial "canned" version of our environment with us.
This is a huge mistake this culture has made in our view of ourselves and the planet, and one of the reasons we are in the mess we are in now. We are all linked in ways that boggle the mind. You don't have to understand all of the ways everything is linked if you just keep the main idea in mind. - wwnexc, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3Couldn't have said it better. Thank you.
- MindTrigger, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3Well, I consider myself to be a "green advocate" and I have been working in the tech industry for 15 years. I am making many changes in my own home that integrate my technology with a less wasteful and more responsible way of life. This includes using less energy, and even growing some of my own food.
People should not feel like they have to completely abandon technology to live more green. We also shouldn't make the mistake of believing that living a more responsible life is an 'all or nothing' change. Do what you can. Start small and plan for the future. Make changes to your lifestyle at a pace you are comfortable with. Hell, my main goal in life at this point is to build an off-grid home and all I can do about it for now is learn and plan. - S4MF1SHER, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3Tech savvy and self important.
- saranagati, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2out of curiosity what is the name of the open source medical software you're working on? I've kind of been thrust into the medical industry lately and am trying to look at all possibly solutions.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2"just. like. you."
that. was. gay. - damnfunny1, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2Wow what and who does these stats tech savvy plz
- BlockedUser, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2There's nothing i like better than recycling my tall cans and baggies.
- inactive, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2They get their powers from Earth's Yellow Sun
- jasdf, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2I'm pretty sure that "propensity" means absolutely nothing with the format that you used it in.
- inactive, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2Why can't we just build nuclear reactors like France so we don't have to read by a single LED at night?
- SparkyPine, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2Eco Zombies - "Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeen!"
- S4MF1SHER, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2Try Adblock.
- geoffg, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2"Green" = Religion.
- MindTrigger, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2Well, for starters, we wouldn't need as many nuclear plants if people conserved. I'm not talking about living in the stone age. We should advance our technology so that we use less power, and in the mean time we can, if we so choose, use less anyway. I am using a lot less power at my house, and it has not effected me one way or another. My electric bill this last month was 1/3 smaller the same month last year, and I still live basically the same. We are more aware of our usage though, and much less power is wasted.
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -2/+4By far the dumbest article about "green" submitted...oh wait no the one about "chicks talking to guys that drive fuel effecient cars" tops this. seriously, who the ***** believes this crap? Do you people submit this ***** in the false hope of building your nonexistent self esteem?
- MindTrigger, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2You are just feeding ludicrous stereotypes with this kind of rant. There are plenty of normal people out there who are making responsible, green decisions, without becoming complete hippy-dippy stiffs. This is more of that "all-or-nothing" ***** green mentality I spoke of in an early post.
As far as eating goes, obviously more people could eat better and we wouldn't have an epidemic of lard asses and health care issues in this country. I did decide to make some changes in that area of my life as well as going more green, and it has changed my life. Shall I preach on?
Also, 420. - Buelldozer, on 06/05/2008, -1/+3Define "tech savvy". I know more than a few people who claim to be "tech savvy" when in reality all they can do is manage to buy music online, usually from itunes, and get it onto their Ipod. They can send email, browse the web, and keep paper in their printer. Whoooptee *****. Here's a cookie.
They may be "tech savvy", at least in their own minds, but they cannot do anything productive or practical. All they know how to do is run some consumer-centric gidgets that someone else put a lot of time into making as easy to use as possible. - Y0tsuya, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2I remember the good old days when tech savvy means you know where the power button is and don't call the monitor a PC. Now you have to know blogging too? How am I ever going to catch up?
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -1/+3"Green advocates" aren't tech savvy, because people who are tech savvy know that the whole "green" movement is a bunch of ***** that accomplishes absolutely NOTHING.
- gotrootdude, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1
AMEN BROTHER! - inactive, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1You get your data from blogs? No wonder you're clueless.
If you think Humans could become extinct from anything short of a cataclysmic meteor strike, solar explosion, or plague, then you're just an idiot and I cant change your stupid. - EEdesigner, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1If "tech savvy" means understanding the N problems with "Global warming" models, where N is a large number, then they indeed are. However, most seem to have the F in science 101 mentality of Gore. Tech savvy, my butt.
- jayscot, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1Green=*****
- gotrootdude, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1Dude. Yeah, I eat healthy. I grow my own food in my forest garden. I grow my own medicines. I eat Gotu Kola, Indian memory herb, Moringa, Neem, Chaya to improve my intellegence. Black cumen, thistle and others to prevent cancer. Sweeten my food with Stevia, Lo han, Xylitol.
I also smoke, drink and am about to go drink a malt liquor and smoke salvia while working on open source medical software. Hell, I may even think about sex some time this week. Tomorrow, I'll wake up and drink eight cups of coffee and bounce around like a pinball.
Illegal drugs bad. Legal drugs rock. - ledbepplin, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1i'm an eco zombie and i'm getting a kick out of these replies.
- didgital, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1I think this article is so full of holes it's irrelevant. Besides, there are so many people that think that computers are more green than alternatives. If those people knew how much the environment suffers (in chemicals to process parts and in raw materials mined), they'd know better. Owning a bunch of gadgets is actually non-green.
- inactive, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1And take your 'epic fail' language back to World of Warcraft.
- BlueSkyfish, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1I like the environment. Hate the term "green" though.
- 24evita, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1Actually that must be a generalization as a good friend of the family who is 68 is more Tech savvy than most 30 year olds I know.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/04/2008, -1/+2Yet they're also stereotyped as being pot heads?
And I'm not pro-eating healthy people. I don't want to eat people, I'd rather eat beef or chicken. - cliffzdude, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1The linked to full report (pdf) shows the median age of the "green advocates" to be 47.9 ys...
Stats are stats, one can interpret them at will. One interpretation could be the older you get, the more confident you get. Think old man telling you to get the ***** off his lawn. I bet *that* guys is green, and is certain his friends truly ask him for (tech) advice. - MindTrigger, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1I agree (with what you were trying to say) and I will take it a step further. 'Tech savvy' is a ridiculous term to use when talking about the youths of western culture today anyway. They have grown up with tech, and they know no different. It is a natural part of their environment. Being 'tech savvy' implies they have made some sort of effort to be involved in tech. My high school aged child doesn't know of a time she couldn't take her cell phone or iPod with her anywhere she went, except when she was too young to be trusted with such expensive items. She looks at compact disks as artifacts of ages past.
- inactive, on 06/04/2008, -5/+6yeah and they're also ***** full of themselves and smell each other's farts.
- cgrado, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1I OWN A MAC! MAC R 73H PWNZROZ! SO I'M TECH SAVVY!
- ratexla, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1http://www.steve.gb.com/rants/environmentalism.htm ...
- ratexla, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I'm kind of annoyed when people show that attitude of "I can't do it all, so I will be CONSISTENT and not do ANYTHING!" Awesome excuse for being LAZY and not doing SOMETHING. Not. :p
That being said, it's also nice to always try and improve. & thanks for your efforts. :) - inactive, on 06/04/2008, -3/+4They're just incapable of analyzing simple math functions.
