- jkoski, on 05/29/2008, -1/+36After reading your profile, I'm guessing you own a LOT of stock in oil companies.
- aliengoods, on 05/29/2008, -5/+39Chill the ***** out. It's just an electric car.
- Mr.Gone, on 05/29/2008, -1/+30Screw that! I'm gettin me $20,000 in pudding WOO!
- inactive, on 05/29/2008, -7/+33That car definitely will be popular.especially for the short commuters. Good little grocery getter for the urban dweller.
- i70CuDa, on 05/29/2008, -0/+23Considering that you could buy an i4 Honda, datsun and the like in the 80's/90's that got 50mpg, I just see them as a scam
- skav, on 05/29/2008, -1/+23[citation needed]
- mark076h, on 05/29/2008, -1/+21it's not the price or the mileage, just think of how many chicks you can get with that thing, girls will be all over you!
- inactive, on 05/29/2008, -6/+26What if it runs out of electricity on the motorway? If you have a NORMAL car some kind soul will lend you enough petrol (Gas to you Americans...) so they won't get trapped there all day, who's gonna offer to let you plug your car into their wall socket for half and hour giving you about 5 minutes juice? ....
- Mr.Gone, on 05/29/2008, -6/+24Holy $#!+ I have $20,000?!
Where did that come from! - MacEnvy, on 05/29/2008, -1/+18I can honestly say that if you come to America and run out of gas on the freeway, it's extremely unlikely that someone is going to pull over and "lend you some gas". You're going to have to call AAA, just like with this car.
I suspect they'll be able to make mobile recharging units that will give you like 10 miles worth of charge so you can get somewhere for help, too. - chrisOrbit, on 05/29/2008, -3/+19http://www.greenvehicles.com/
/cursing the blog spam - elTito, on 05/29/2008, -2/+17How often? Where does that information come from?
A123 Lithium cells have been cycled over 8,000 times with no significant loss in performance or capacity. Assuming one full cycle a day (unlikely) that's over 20 years of service life.
I think you're talking out of your ass. - SoopaflySAM, on 05/29/2008, -9/+24I dont care what people think... I love Hybrids
- inactive, on 05/29/2008, -2/+16Does it come with a "less hideous" option?
- zyl0x, on 05/29/2008, -4/+15Why no airbags? It would be pretty stupid to drive on the freeway without them.
- DeadFox1, on 05/29/2008, -0/+11hey "thebike45" - did you just copy Thomas C Gray's comments from that website? or are you him and those are your original ideas?
Either way- BURIED. - gutistg, on 05/29/2008, -0/+11It's tiny. Push.
- rblancarte, on 05/29/2008, -1/+11Real men go grean, and win the Tour de France 7 times - so the answer to your question is NEITHER.
- inactive, on 05/29/2008, -6/+16
It is not very expensive. - rblancarte, on 05/29/2008, -1/+11Real men can't spell either
- 1980Tim, on 05/29/2008, -4/+14No AC? Yeah that is going to be great when its 105 and I'm sitting in traffic.
- inactive, on 05/29/2008, -3/+13If one is in the market for a new car anyway, why not purchase one that is more efficient?
- stinkipete, on 05/29/2008, -1/+10it's not very pretty.
- FearFactory, on 05/29/2008, -2/+11Looks like the Suburbans, Escalades, and Excavators have some competition in the grocery-go-getter catagory.
- PhattyPhattMatt, on 05/29/2008, -2/+11Was I the only one that read-
"a low center of gravity to maintain balance (but surprisingly has no airbags)"
WTF?!-High on saving the planet, Low and saving the occupants! no thanks... you can have your eco friendly tricycle... - drmangrum, on 05/29/2008, -1/+10For some it was.
- asskicker32, on 05/29/2008, -0/+9so... Uh... Dont do that? Worst case is that you get towed to ANY place where you can charge your car. Remember, you can charge at any 240V outlet.
- Scottievm, on 05/29/2008, -5/+14I think I owned one of these bad boys when I was five years old. Though it could only do 5mph...
- rockandrollmark, on 05/29/2008, -4/+13Not only did I bury you here, I went though your other posts and buried you.
- mrgreen4242, on 05/29/2008, -0/+9The Prius only gets about 45 mpg int he real world. While that's GOOD, even at $4/gallon a cheap economy car is a better buy.
A base model Focus gets 30mpg and costs about $13,000. That leaves $12,000 to buy gas with, @$4/gal that's 3000 gallons, and at 30mpg we're talking 90,000 miles, which is likely all I'll put on a car before replacing it, meaning a Prius would just break even over its lifetime, not counting additional interest on a car loan or fluctuations in gas prices (up or down).
An EV that costs $20,000 and $.02 per mile, though, would break even with a 30mpg, $13,000 car after about 60k miles, or 3 years (for me) not even taking into account any maintenance on the gas car (oil changes, etc) that EVs just don't need. - rockandrollmark, on 05/29/2008, -0/+9By the looks of the language, this guy posted wrote the first post in the comments section of the article. My guess is that he's one of these new-age marketing guys that scours the web for relevant stories so he can flame the boards hoping to spread his propaganda.
I also did a quick google search on the name Thomas C Gray, the name he posted under on the other site... Apearently, Mr. Gray is a registered sex offender in Florida.
Good job in choosing a name! - eengineer, on 05/29/2008, -1/+9Good point. The electric car idea is great, but we need to address the problems of roadside assistance and "refueling".
- mywhitenoise, on 05/29/2008, -2/+10Why in the hell would you spend that much money, or even ANY money, on porn?
- TomFrost, on 05/29/2008, -1/+8Dude, are you honestly suggesting that the carbon emissions produced in the process of making ONE electric car is greater than the carbon emissions produced by making a modern gas-powered car and driving it for 5-10 years?! Even if you get a USED car and drive it for five years, you're still multiplying the emissions released in making this electric car many times over. Yes, factory emissions are bad, but you're off your rocker if you think it's not a startling improvement over what the current standard is.
- Yareking, on 05/29/2008, -6/+13everything was fin until i saw the rear.. OMFG ITS UGLY
- smoger, on 05/29/2008, -0/+7FWD + snow tires does just fine unless you're living in the backwoods somewhere.. or if you MUST have AWD, there's plenty of cars with it on the market.
my dad bought an SUV for the same reason as you, and now he's kicking himself in the ass.. he said he used the 4wd one time last year. - thescimitar, on 05/29/2008, -3/+10Hyperbole much? Many consumers out there, myself included, would happily consider something eco-friendly in spite of its lackluster looks. Not everyone in this country is so shallow as to make their purchasing decisions solely upon appearance.
The second part of your statement is simply wrong. The EV1 was extremely popular, but not particularly available, and eventually discontinued in SPITE of growing demand. - cledford, on 05/29/2008, -1/+8Here's a video of it in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_q3D0qp0So
- TomFrost, on 05/29/2008, -0/+7A BTU is a unit of heat, not toxic or greenhouse emissions. Heat production isn't destroying our environment. When you can prove greenhouse gas emissions from the production of a car this small is greater than that released from a 1994 Geo Metro over the course of five years, I'll listen. Until then, it's just not adding up.
- RationalCenter, on 05/29/2008, -0/+7This is urban myth. The Prius has been on the road for five years, and so far not one has had to have a battery replaced except for those damaged in accidents. This includes a fleet in Canada where many have upwards of 300,000 miles on them. It's phony rationalization for those that don't want to give up their gas cars.
- SoopaflySAM, on 05/29/2008, -2/+8Save up 5 thousand more and get yourself a Prius instead
- eengineer, on 05/29/2008, -2/+8Sure, cause those cars won't be built anyway?
At some point you need to introduce new cars to the system, you cant just have everyone go out and buy used cars.
Terrible argument. - xstarsprinklesx, on 05/29/2008, -0/+6So, with electric (and hybrid) cars.. what's the offset with the amount of fuel needed to power the electricity used to charge up the car before driving it? This is a serious question, it's something I've wondered for a while.
- mrgreen4242, on 05/29/2008, -0/+6The gas to run a 30mpg gas car costs about $0.13 per mile. The electricity needed to run this car for a mile is about $0.02. Not a direct comparison of how much fuel is expended, but does give you an idea of the overall efficiency of the whole system used to power each one.
- locorooster, on 05/29/2008, -0/+6Article title needs an asterisk:
An Electric Car You Can Buy Today For $20K**
** that offers little protection against your non-green suv driving friends running you over while talking on their cell phones.
I am ready to buy any plug in vehicle that resembles a car that will NOT perform like a motorcycle in a crash. Not a big car, not an suv, just a car, a honda accord, a toyota corolla, a vw jetta, a prius or beeetle. Not a three wheeled contraption. I don't want to take it to a conversion shop either. I am lazy. I want some sort of warranty. I will pay more, I will yield horsepower, other interior creature comforts. Give me a people container / transporter that is safe and electric and driveable and maintainable and I, Joe American Consumer will buy it. I will even buy some solar panels to charge it. Please. Someone. Make this car for me. - drmangrum, on 05/29/2008, -0/+6They got swamp ass with a side of nut butter. Now ask yourself if people in their 50's-70's would want to go without AC again.
- subliminalurge, on 05/29/2008, -0/+6No.
There's nothing magical about electric motors that dictates that "ugly" must be a top design criteria for any vehicle that utilizes them.
If people want these things to become mainstream, they need to start designing them with at least a little bit of visual appeal. - directive0, on 05/29/2008, -0/+6If his trolling has made you want to gouge your eyes out or incites even the smallest bit of rage in you, then I regret to inform you that he is a very successful troll.
