Amazon tribe enlists Google in battle with illegal loggers -
independent.co.uk — The tribe – whose first contact with the modern world was less than 40 years ago – are replacing their bows and arrows with hi-tech gadgets in their battle for survival. They have already begun using satnav on their traditional trails through the trees. And Google Earth has just agreed to provide high-resolution satellite images of their forest hom

- diggzilla, on 04/15/2008, -9/+14It's amazing how Google is using it's technology to make the world a better place. I wish more tech companies would do that (Microsoft, Apple...)
- joebrook, on 04/15/2008, -12/+2Apple maybe. Microsoft, don't think so. Beside that, if M$ would do it they will get the wrong continent.
- Auzy, on 04/15/2008, -2/+8Apple? Mate, you got no idea.
Bill gates as mentioned does try to help people as mentioned, and he'll probably go down with only average savings in the bank account. (Well, not average, but small for silicon valley)
Steve Jobs is a millionaire too, but the only thing you ever hear of him is him jeering at people who want to speak to him, or acting agro. I don't think steve jobs is a nice guy in real life (I may be wrong). Bill Gates, I'd happily go out for beers with. And judging by his leaving video (or whatever that video was), he certainly seems pretty cool actually.- Elranzer, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Steve Jobs is a BILLIONAIRE, yet has no charities to his name. Just food for thought.
- Auzy, on 04/15/2008, -2/+8Apple? Mate, you got no idea.
- DrDragun, on 04/15/2008, -1/+13Perhaps not using their technology, but you have heard of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, right?
- geek22, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2I think he is referring to company wise not person wise. "...using it's technology..."
- ArchangelZLT, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1You got a point, but it's not the right one here.
- punkcat, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1so the gadgets, software and computers they make aren't the backbone that allows the use of Google?
not to mention the grants they give out as mentioned above. - ePuck, on 04/15/2008, -1/+2Making the world a better place by tracking your footsteps, one step at a time.
- GiggleStick, on 04/15/2008, -0/+4Yeah, just wait till they start targeting them with ads.
"Looking for Brazil Nuts?"
"Get Jungle Fever on DVD!"
- GiggleStick, on 04/15/2008, -0/+4Yeah, just wait till they start targeting them with ads.
- fkr3, on 04/15/2008, -1/+12Wow. Google buys the satelite imagery, Bill Gates and his wife are two of the most charitable people in the world, their foundation does more than every other charity combined.
Steve Jobs is about the only billionaire who´s never heard of philanthropy.- Elranzer, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1But his company makes shiny and elitist products. Isn't that charitable enough?
- tombkilla, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Microsoft has been helping people for a lot longer than google, google is just everyones best friend right now.
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/ ... - talonstriker, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1I don't have any sources, but I'm willing to bet that these companies do so, but don't get nearly as much attention (definitely MS, they have an initiative in DC to help poor people get tech knowledge). Google does so because of its "good guy" image.
- joebrook, on 04/15/2008, -12/+2Apple maybe. Microsoft, don't think so. Beside that, if M$ would do it they will get the wrong continent.
- sr5878, on 04/15/2008, -4/+4googlezon?
- smacksaw, on 04/15/2008, -1/+4Ok, I am now aware of their plight. Who do I complain to/boycott/etc?
- slvrbullet87, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1People in brazil who need the land for food?
- SniperXPX, on 04/15/2008, -5/+3This is why Google's the best.
- Austin7687, on 04/15/2008, -3/+1That's pretty awesome. Their struggle with adapting would make a good novel.
- LonesomeFighter, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3novel? ***** that. i'd rather see a movie
- leapius, on 04/15/2008, -0/+21Was I the one who completely misread that title in a technological sense? Jeees I need to get off my PC.
- tombkilla, on 04/15/2008, -0/+0nope, and with google apps competing against the amazon services I though this had to be uber nerd. I guess thats a twofer
- kalagmail, on 04/15/2008, -4/+1Google is as always being philanthropist. Others should follow suit.
- surKaz, on 04/15/2008, -1/+32Child: it's going to rain soon.
Father: Yet there is no cloud in the sky. You, my son, have developed the ability passed down by our ancestors-
Child: Oh, I just googled the weather in our area. Says clouds moving in, winds of about 20 mph... you know..
Father: :| - Bersy, on 04/15/2008, -2/+9So wait, what? Amazon.com has teamed up with Google to battle keyloggers? :P
- carlosauresrex, on 04/15/2008, -0/+4that's the same thing i read at first glance.
- lpferris, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2No, I think they're battling illegal bloggers.
- rrc7cz, on 04/15/2008, -1/+12Did anyone else read that as Amazon.com getting help from Google in tracking down illegally installed logging software? Man, I've been on the net too long...
- indigohat, on 04/21/2008, -0/+0Hah.. I was thinking amazon must have a tribe.net page and gets google's help with illegal loggers... as in some sort of offshoot of bloggers. Even after opening the article, I was COMPLETELY confused to be reading something about villagers and a forest.
- TheNico, on 04/15/2008, -2/+18Say what you want about M$ being evil, but Bill Gates is one of the biggest philanthropists there is.
Sorry for using such a big word on Digg.- noin, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Agreed but irrelevant, there was no mention of MS in the article.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1It's okay to use big words, just don't pontificate.
- bonedead, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1Apology accepted.
- UrbanVoyeur, on 04/15/2008, -0/+5This is why the One Laptop Per Child initiative is so important. if a random brush with technology can inspire a local leader and give him new tools to prevent ecological disaster, we can't begin to measure the impact millions of laptops will have on the underdeveloped world.
(And yes, FTR, I know OLPC was NOT involved in this story) - cerejota, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Where is Amazon in all this?
- Dadamantastic, on 04/15/2008, -0/+5Euthanize the savages. That jungle is a blemish on America's industrialized Earth. Show them Christianity and indoctrinate them. If they don't want to be saved then screw it.
- noahhoward, on 04/15/2008, -0/+12Somehow I think I would prefer the use of bows and arrows to stop logging. Perhaps that should have teamed up with Smith and Wesson for their upgrade instead?
- Steinr, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1google FTWorld, enough said.
- agimat, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1So now the enemies of this tribe now know the name of the person who has a solar powered google laptop in his possession and that he has been reporting their activities. Everyone else now also knows that there are people who would pay $50k (probably doubled by now) for his head.
How much web traffic was that worth?- wolferz, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1All strategies have risks... their strategy is to fight politically instead of using prehistoric tech to fight 21st century big business. That means they hve to get the word out and build strength in numbers. It also means that they have to expose themselves to possible further attack.
- jp12380, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3Who read that as illegal blogger?
- MozzieTS, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2shift happens, man
- liuite, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1they need ninjas!
