- Hillsfar, on 09/03/2008, -7/+19According to our trusted anonymous Republican sources, Sarah Palin has more experience with electric scooters and other vibrating electric toys than Barack Obama, who has none.
- InJectaH, on 09/03/2008, -0/+12lool, it's funny how politics somehow manage to fit into every topic
- lnxfi, on 09/03/2008, -0/+11Pics please. Now.
- Colecoman1982, on 09/03/2008, -0/+11The primary reason DIY electric car conversions aren't economical is that advanced battery tech is too expensive and lead acid batteries only last ~500-800 recharge cycles (as per wikipedia). These new batteries only last 100-500 cycles (as per Powergenix's website) compared to 200-800 for Ni-Cd and Li-Ion (also, as per Powergenix's site). These things are useless for electric vehicles since, if you use them on a regular basis, you'll be spending a huge amount of money replacing he batteries every year.
- DanielleJM, on 09/03/2008, -1/+10I could use one of these :)
- Dronez, on 09/03/2008, -0/+8How about an electric motorcycle? They're only a little bit bigger, but they're more comfortable and can carry more batteries. :(
- Lari, on 09/03/2008, -0/+8I recently bought a scooter for my commutes with the city and nearby areas. I looked at electrics, but they top off at about 30/35 mph and are way more expensive than the alternative.
My 2-stroke 50cc - Genuine Roughhouse 50 - might put out a bit more particulate matter (I do burn synthetic vegetable-based oil), but it can go up to 50mph and gets about 90mpg. All of this for about 1/3 less sticker price. - InJectaH, on 09/03/2008, -2/+10I'm gonna ride my scooter everywhere, 2 coats in the winter time.
100mpg is worth it - LogicBomB, on 09/03/2008, -2/+9They need to start making scooters look less gay. A few them already exist, which is good, but I don't see why scooters need to look so emasculating and effeminate.
- iansanderson, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5this is awesome, now make an electric car (again) already!!
- thcobbs, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5I've been looking for a practical all-electric vehicle for a while. I've seen a lot of the Golden Eagle Motorcycles in direct competition to the Vectrix, but neither has gotten to a decent price point.
Hopefully this will accomplish it. - slightlyoffbeat, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5How much do you think something like this would sell for?
- mattjameson, on 09/03/2008, -1/+5I think many people could, there is a serious market gap for light, affordable, and green trasportation.... duh.
- dha07030, on 09/03/2008, -1/+5Still more expensive than a fat chick.
- InJectaH, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4Get a 150cc scooter for 700$ they hit 55-60mph
- altgeeky1, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4There is an electric motorcycle... it's $10k (which isn't too bad). Problem really is with bikes you need GOOD batteries (low weight, big charge) and your range is crippled to 30-60 miles.
Which is fine for commutes, but not so fine for a leisure cruise through the mountains. :-)
There are some electric bikes also. I'm looking at the cheap $350 one on Amazon, for this spring. I drive scenic backroads to work and while the ride would be easy, there's exactly 3 INCHES of road past the white line marker.... drivers on 122 don't much like bikes and are ignorant of the law, to the point of hostility. A faster bike is safer in this respect... if the boost gets your peddling to 30mph you're less likely to get run off. - shenmueguru, on 09/03/2008, -1/+5it better be freaking somewhat fast. I hate going slow
- Jwoey, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3I don't want to have to get a motorcycle license, but thanks for the tip.
Also, don't forget the cost of delivery. It may be about 700 to buy, but then another $200 to deliver. That's 80% more than I said I was willing to pay. - thcobbs, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3Unfortunately, I did some more digging... all the scooters they currently have are limited to 20mph per US regulations... Unless they alter their automotive group, we'll still only get a top speed of 20MPH.
DAMN IT! - wunksta, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2yah, i wish they would bring back the old school vespa designs. or just make nice electric motorcycle variants.
- tendonut, on 09/03/2008, -1/+3That won't matter. The typical American will not see the irony of the situation. I get it all the time from friends who all have muscle cars or 8-cylinder monstrosities, and I am cruising around in my Mazda3. I drive 35 miles round trip to work every day and I do not feel the gas pinch that much. They drive 5 miles and bitch about their $100 fill-ups. But I'm just an loser to them, so what do I know.
- pap232323, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2what will we talk about after the election
- tendonut, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Are you serious? The dollar menu has more items on it then the place had on their entire menu like 20 years ago. I can get two double cheeseburgers, fries, a drink, and a parfait for $5 now.
- nesagwa, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Eh. The only difference between an electric scooter and an electric motorcycle would be riding style and body shape honestly.
Theyd have the same electric engine and battery.
Not really that hard but Im sure the company making these electrics do the same as the hundreds of other scooter manufacturers and license out a scooter model and just modify it slightly to fit their needs rather than design it from scratch. - frequentFlyer, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2they need to make scooters look like my ZX-10R. then I'd buy one.
- InJectaH, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2scooters are lighter, less moving parts etc.
don't have a mechanical explanation though ;) - morepowerr, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Because big automakers would buy it up and make it disappear. this way they have a chance of getting it on the after market.
- theBOZman, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2I'm building one. 60+mph. There are a bunch of plans online.
http://www.rqriley.com/chopper-et.htm - wunksta, on 09/03/2008, -1/+3they are rechargable i read.
- phyr3x, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Sounds like a good deal. If they can come under $1000 and they are made really solid (i.e. no maintenance, as all electric cars are much more sturdy than their smelly, oily counterparts), then cheapskate college students like myself might buy one.
- dha07030, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Work 15 mins later? Also read Lari's post.
- 2Bnor2B, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2I am waiting for a Venture One motorcycle. (It's an electric and hybrid version of the Carver for the US)
If you are going green, do it in style. Check out Venture Vehicles.
http://www.flytheroad.com/ - inactive, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Unfortunately, the Veloteq scooters are made in China. Chinese scooters are junk. If you want a good quality scooter, try vespa. They're Italian, and are built to last.
- Fracture98, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1Bah. Whippersnapper. I remember when it was a "whole meal and change for a dollar". A Big Mac, fries, apple pie, and a drink for 99 cents.
- ToKnow, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1If they still make a lot of noise, then no thanks.
- Branyers, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1NOTHING is no maintenance. It will still need periodic lubrication, tires, drive belts, etc. And at or below $1000, it would be ALL Chinese and unsafe to ride on the road...that is, if you could keep it running long enough.
- Branyers, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1Older than dirt.
- slapthemonkey, on 09/04/2008, -0/+1People are really concerned. It is a nice feeling
- Branyers, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1Exactly. Most Americans are too ***** fat to ride a scooter.
- Branyers, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1You mean the average American weighs as much as or more than the scooter itself?
- Branyers, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1Just because the company is American based doesn't mean the parts aren't coming from China. Chinese metals are more porous than Swiss cheese and have about the same strength.
It's dangerous enough riding on two wheels. I don't need something that is going to fall apart on me too. I'd gladly pick one up and pay the asking price if they were manufactured here or in Japan or Germany. - inactive, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1PowerGenix is headquartered in San Diego, CA. - Buy American, people!
Even if you don't live in America, or not an American, you know, with the exception of some of the cars, American made products are FAR superior to Chinese knock-offs. We'll give the best quality car award to The Germans. - fixyourthinking, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1Actually you can melt money to your heart's content. You can't mark it up intentionally or deface money - magicians getting you to sign a coin for a magic trick will be convicted before a "melter" would.
- Rudegar, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1that's mopeds not scooters
- Rudegar, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1fat == ½ the batt time
- altgeeky1, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1Fat people usually drive SUVs. Cheetos and Twinkees are keeping us dependent on foreign oil!
- vbullinger, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1Proof of what iansanderson is saying: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-254849659 ...
- vbullinger, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1Go ahead and try to make one of those. See how long you live ;)
- altgeeky1, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1The biggest gain is giving up your car. If you can only limit your driving, you MAY get a reduced insurance rate for driving fewer miles... at this level it's a wash (or pretty close).
I'm looking at the iZip to pedal-assist my way to work. I can budget one for the spring, and may jump if the prices really drop or the batteries get better.
I haven't yet discovered why the iZip battery "mountain" bikes are cheaper than their "street" pedal bikes. The street bikes are more refined looking, but the mountain ones seem just as capable. - MikeFallopian, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1No, you got it. It's actually mechanically (much) easier to go electric. The weight of cars and the expected range (hundreds of miles per charge / fill-up) will be the biggest sticking point until batteries with higher energy density are manufactured.
