- threemagic, on 11/10/2008, -0/+5I just built a tee pee.. as far as I can tell, I have no carbon footprint.
- inactive, on 11/10/2008, -2/+7Green paint and some Mexicans... not on the list?
- manzplan, on 11/10/2008, -2/+6We are getting solar panels on our roof any day now.. can't wait. Hopefully before winter!
- TheMachine1, on 11/10/2008, -0/+4Yeah during the warm weather people forget that CFL heat your house up less to.
- zheisey, on 11/10/2008, -0/+4We need alot more money put toward solar R & D. If the cost were brought down, I think this would be the big step we need in lessening our eco footprint and becoming less dependent on non-renewable sources of energy.
- mogdor, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3Tip #9, be a turtle.
I like turtles. - MMATapout7, on 11/10/2008, -2/+5i have a 9th tip...haha
- quiggibub, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3Jesus Christ. Another green your home article with the same ***** suggestions in it. Buried for lack of originality.
- mellowgreen, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3Websites should not automatically talk to me.
- cLamm, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2yea I thought the solar panels was a bit out there..
but the unpluging the appliances, extra insulation and light bulb upgrades were good tips. - IareKEVLAR, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2FTA
"Create two wood structures in a convenient location and string a durable rope or non-metal wire across them. Viola! Instant clothes drying station."
Viola? Really? I used to play the viola. - jasdf, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2A crummy commercial? Son of a bitch!

- epadafunk, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1Anyone want to reduce their topsoil footprint or garbage footprint or water pollution footprint? Carbon should be the least of our concerns, but no matter how you look at it, people are gonna kill the species one way or another, or at least lower the population to cave man times.
- Whackly, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Surprising... buying and using skil tools factor in to the more pointless things on the list. this article isn't an attempt to sell tools to hippies at all.
- madcaow, on 11/10/2008, -1/+2good solar panel thing here. http://retouching.net.au/e4e.php
- SiXiam, on 11/10/2008, -1/+2Yeah, let's go solar invest 20k so I don't have to pay 10k worth of electricity.. Ok, yeah bury me, but this is fantasy land or a game of the rich and dumb...
- partrow, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1The word "green" in title begets a Bury.
- zheisey, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1Hello Jonathan...
- LordMaude, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1Turning off electrical appliances at the wall is a pain in the arse. How many people enjoy walking into their lounge/study, reaching behind their computer/TV Cabinet and flicking a switch (especially 5 or so times a day on the weekend) to watch TV?
Oh, and it's really great having to reprogram the time on 4 or 5 appliances too.
Somebody should invent a master kill-switch turned on & off by a universal remote and appliance manufacturers should design internal battery backups (much like the CMOS battery in computers) so you don't lose the time.
Then I'll switch-off my appliances. - Jo9100, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1The article only talks about using less electricity. However, electricity is not everything. For instance, motor transportation and industries account for much more greenhouse gases.

- inactive, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1[Now go] out to face the world again...wiser.
- amy31415, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1How about a simple fireplace (with insert) or wood-burning stove for god's sake? Have we completely lost any notion of simplicity? I have a traditional fireplace fitted with an insert and it's the *****. I even learned how to sweep the chimney myself. You can make good use of non-glossy junk-mail, newspaper, various packaging. It's also a great way to destroy documents you don't want falling into the wrong hands.
Burning wood (as long as you do it right) has a zero carbon footprint. We need a mix of old and new school tech. - tgc1, on 11/11/2008, -1/+2I think we need a "green" section on Digg. Every other day i'm seeing green this and that. I'm honestly getting tired of it. I love the environment, but for god sakes, I hate people breathing down my neck about having to go green on everything. Matter of fact, you could say i'm a little green around the gills with this nonsense.
In my opinion, it is up to industry to offer better choices for consumers. We can only buy what is out there. And if they develop products that are better and more environmentally friendly, then I think people will gravitate towards them. But you can't expect everyone to jump this green bandwagon ***** with no hope of a return other than feeling like a sucker who is paying more for the sake of some catchy cliche marketing term. Enough with the "green" *****. Get us some real solutions we can get behind and not for the sake of being green. Being green means nothing to people. We are not plants. We have no chlorophyll.
Ie. In order for people to care the products and solutions you offer must be:
a) Better than what is currently out there
b) More affordable
or
c) Both
To consumers that is all that matters. People can live with a battered conscience a lot easier than they can a strained pocket book. And these solutions, offered during an economic melt down isn't exactly the best timing. - tomarocco, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Those Green ***** need to be stopped.
- Whackly, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1You can already buy power strips that can be controlled by remote for this exact purpose. They aren't cheap but nothing worth having is so that's not really a deal breaker. On the other hand, having to redo the damned settings every time is the biggest pain in the ass ever. Also having to manage power differently for everything. I can't kill my cable box because the dvr won't work. I can't kill the uverse box because i want my phone and internet to work. So I could wire the 360, wii, reciever, etc to a seperate power strip and turn that off. If I did that I'd still have to redo all the settings on the TV each time. Not only that but I don't want to look at my power strip so I don't want to put it someplace convenient to get to.
- tomarocco, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Don't forget to clean all that equipment with benzene...it's easiest just to rinse it right down the storm drain at the curb. Don't forget to drain and change the compressor oil while you are there.
- Spoomeister, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1I'll go green when the government coughs up 700 billion dollars to bailout the environment.
- xxNIRVANAxx, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1I agree, but should security system have been in there for Figure 1 under unplugging home electronics?
- Spoomeister, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1...because you want to never need a nightlight in your house again?
- inactive, on 11/11/2008, -0/+0use the breaker box
- Spoomeister, on 11/11/2008, -1/+1And we'll keep posting them again until everyone does it! That's not a promise, it's a threat! ;)
- inactive, on 11/11/2008, -0/+025 gallons of green lead paint, applied by compressed air from a leaded gas powered 2 stroke air compressor would work.

http://www.homeinnovationideas.com - GeorgeTirebiter, on 11/11/2008, -0/+0I can't believe no one has suggested how to deal with the toxic greenhouse gasses that are emitted from residential bathroom vents every day. I suggest that the vents be routed through an incinerator to destroy any and all methane, etc. For that matter, perhaps all housing vents should receive the same treatment, as farts are not necessarily confined to the bathroom. Lessen your footprint, people!
- pooljoe, on 11/11/2008, -1/+1I'll move to where you are if your electricity bill doesn't top 10k in a lifetime. (I mean accumulatively not monthly)
