- adayahead, on 07/22/2008, -0/+7Fantastic Article! We've been composting for several years, but our list of what goes in and pretty small, compared to this. Makes me want to go through the house and find everything compostable. Of course, then I would have to get out the shovel, turn the pile, water it (whoops, how does this intersect with drought conditions?), and keep on working it. Of course, it will help in the fall when I dryscape my front yard.

- brainnovate, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3I like to burn my bills first, then I take the ashes and put them in. That way you get twice the satisfaction!
- whereisian, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2What an idiotic post and poor advice. How many different ways can you say paper? The only mildly relevant thing in the article was "You can compost anything of organic origin" - and that is not true when talking about your backyard compost heap.
Composting tampons? Dairy? Rats and raccoons would be swarming in minutes. Vacuum cleaner waste? Not if you want to grow your food in it.
Here is better advice - fruit and vegetable matter only, with a short list of exceptions, at least if you plan to grow your own food in the compost you make.
If you really want to learn, start here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compost and follow some of the reference links. - kdfrawg, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I liked this post! I learned some things that I can take to the bank. Or at least the compost bin. :)

I read somewhere that throwing ashes into a comost won't break them down any further. The fire has already broken them down as far as they will. - inactive, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1first poster saying that? you really think we're stupid, don't ya digga?
- Obelia, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Rat cleanings? No thanks. This is a good list if you want to attract rodents, with all the dairy and dried blood. Shoes are no good to compost either, because they're usually made of far more than just leather.
And as for used masking tape and vacuum cleaner contents, these are usually contaminated with all sorts of crap you don't want in it. I usually use masking tape when painting, I'm sure a lot of people do. - nneader007, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1"Fireplace and campfire ashes"
I can see where this could go....up in smoke
