1st Time in History, Killer Whales Filmed Hunting Dolphins!
environmentalgraffiti.com — A tour operator in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, unwittingly stumbled into the history books this weekend when he, his boat captain, and four tourists were in the right place at the right time to make the first recording ever of Orca whales hunting dolphins. [Photo]

Here is a video of orcas hunting a porpoise.
If they have been known to hunt porpoises, why is it such a shocker that they would hunt a dolphin?- davdev, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1And isn't an Orca technically a type of porpoise and not actually a whale?
- counterplex, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1I believe Orca's are what the rest of the world calls "Killer Whales" And yes, by "whale" they mean the mammal.
- davdev, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4I know an Orca is a Killer Whale, but the word whale is a misnomer since an Orca is a type of porpoise.
- counterplex, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1Just looked it up. You're right! I learned something today. Thanks!
- counterplex, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1I believe Orca's are what the rest of the world calls "Killer Whales" And yes, by "whale" they mean the mammal.
- kurtu5, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2There are two major types of cetaceans, toothed whales and baleen whales.
Orcas, porpoises, dolphins, narwals, pilot whales are toothed whales.

Some day it will be dumb luck that someone wasn't able to video whatever they are looking at.

- wontstoptalking, on 05/07/2008, -3/+34They can have the ocean, they can eat some fish. But when they go after dolphins, they have GONE TOO FAR!
- MoofTheStoof, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5(Choosing to ignore the sarcasm in order to talk about an interesting point.) Some pods do, some don't. Orca pods have "cultures" that differ from place to place around the world (Orcas are the only other mammal to live in every place on the planet like humans - including antartica) and not all will hunt other cetaceans. Still, it's not exactly cannibalism. More like humans eating other apes. Maybe not ideal, but it's food, if you don't mind killing your cousins.
- Pixelante, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0Killing cousins. Works for me.
- kurtu5, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Maybe like Neanderthals eating ***** Sapiens. Or is human intelligence related to ape intelligence the same as Orca intelligence to dolphin intelligence?
As far as I know Orcas and Dolphins are at similar cognitive levels and capability.

- CedEx, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1It appears people rank cute dolphins above cute baby seals, because Orca's consider baby seals to be a delicacy.
- TheGuruStud, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1well, dolphins think I'm sexy and get a boner, so I prefer them more :)
- kurtu5, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Any one got the video of a pod attacking, killing and eating a blue whale?
I saw this once, the blue whale kept trying to dive to escape, but the orcas kept preventing the blue from diving by blocking its pectoral fins from steering down. Meanwhile others bit at it and eventually bleed out and died. I think they worked at it for a couple of days.

- SteelChicken, on 05/07/2008, -17/+16Way cool.
Orcas and Dolphins are highly intelligent, and yet the kill each other for fun and profit. Tree hugger wankers like to think humans are the only meanies on this planet...not so.- DiggasWAttitude, on 05/07/2008, -8/+32As a tree hugging wanker, I want to be the first to say eat a dick. I'm not naive - I've spent my life traveling the world and I know humans are not the only 'meanies' on this planet. Just because I want to preserve something doesn't mean I think its all sunshine and lollipops. Sorry, probably took your comment too seriously. Its just that so many people take shots at environmentalists as being morons, out of touch with reality.
- SlimeyBooger, on 05/07/2008, -2/+3I think that means you can take the "wanker" out of your title now.
- kurtu5, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Yeah he was addressing those who are naive. So while you apparently suffer no cognitive dissonance, his critique of naive persons still stands.
For example, this is addressed to those wankers who rail against styrofoam and plastic bags. In the big ecological picture, these products are better for the environment than paper products.
Yes cute things get caught in bags and choke on them, but the impact of pulp paper far far outweighs the impact on ecosystems. Yes, plastic garbage in wilderness areas looks ugly, but has a tiny impact on those wildernesses. It simply bugs us. Yes, a sea of garbage in the pacific is ugly, but it actually creates nice habitats for many pelagic organisms.
Now if you wish to volunteer and say hey I am a "tree hugging wanker" who ascribes to the humans are evil and nature is good philosophy, then you are, well, a tree hugging wanker.
- kurtu5, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Yeah he was addressing those who are naive. So while you apparently suffer no cognitive dissonance, his critique of naive persons still stands.

- jp12380, on 05/07/2008, -1/+3Dolphin fat.
- jordansampson, on 05/07/2008, -2/+7Profit can be any number of things: Breeding advantage, food, social advancement to name but a few. But, now that you mention it the Orcas use the rouble. True story.
- dpazar2, on 05/07/2008, -0/+11ummm...the sand dollar of course...***** dolphins have been trying to take over for years, they have nice bounties on their heads.
- nbcaffeine, on 05/07/2008, -1/+7Dolphins are friendly and intelligent... on rye bread with some mayonaise
- jp12380, on 05/07/2008, -1/+3Dolphins are cruel to each other. They participate in infanticide.
- wafla, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Yep. So... let's kill them all and expunge them from the earth.
- 3tcp, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2They're smarter than the average animal but they're just animals, it's stupid to call them cruel
- kurtu5, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2"Cruel" is a behavior often associated with a side benefit.
Dolphins have behaviors that you wouldn't want to call cruel, because apparently this is simply survival. So when a human is cruel and benefits from it, is it not just another type of survival?
Some pods of dolphins are never cruel like other pods can be, as its part of their culture to survive in other ways. Do they call the other pods cruel?
You are not cruel like other persons can be. Do you call them cruel?
I posit no answer either way.
Think about it. - 3tcp, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2I don't need to think about it, cruel implies that something is morally bad. Regardless of perceived similarities to human behavior and whether or not you believe a behavior is necessary, dolphins don't have a conscience.
What kind of idiot feels the need to pass moral judgment on the natural world?
- kurtu5, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2"Cruel" is a behavior often associated with a side benefit.
- jp12380, on 05/07/2008, -1/+3Dolphins are cruel to each other. They participate in infanticide.
- shaka999, on 05/07/2008, -2/+3Your comment would have been more appropriate targeted at the PETA crowd. Most "Tree Huggers" I know are pretty comfortable with the idea of a food chain.
- axiomflash, on 05/07/2008, -5/+5Most PETA people are comfortable with the food chain too. I'm both a hunter and a member of PETA. omg blow your mind?
Most people hate PETA yet don't know any members or anything about it. Is it really that evil to want to reduce animal cruelty?- brstilson, on 05/07/2008, -1/+7If you're a hunter, why would you join one of the most anti-hunting organizations in the world?
http://www.peta.org/MC/factsheet_display.asp?ID=53
If you're going to split hairs over "sport hunting," then check out what the offical PETA site has to say about consuming animals for food:
"“Animals kill other animals for food, so why shouldn’t we?”
Most animals who kill for food could not survive if they didn’t, but that is not the case for humans. In fact, we would be better off if we didn’t eat meat. Many animals, including some of our closest primate relatives, are vegetarians. We should look to them, rather than to carnivores, as models of healthy eating."
source: http://www.peta.org/about/faq-veg.asp
Peta's official position is that humans shouldn't even eat meat regardless of whether or not you personally hunt. Your lack of extremism doesn't give them any credibility.- BabyWookie, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1I am a hunter and a PETA member, as well. There's no requirement to agree with ALL of their stances and actions. I am also somewhat of a gun enthusiast, but my first choice for prez was Dennis Kucinich.
- kurtu5, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Then where is the cutoff? So what if a caged chicken farmer is a member of PETA? Hell they will take your money.
It doesn't blow my mind that your are both a hunter and a member. You simply have zero clue as to what you are a member of. Peta is militant about meat. They humor you as long as you keep sending in donations.
- 3tcp, on 05/07/2008, -1/+5Yeah, I've also noticed that most peta members don't have a clue what peta really stands for except 'animalrs are nice awwwww' and 'that celebrity with the huge rack told me to send them some money'
A lot of peta members would feel shooting you in the face would be fair since you're doing the same thing to animals who have the same rights that you do- BabyWookie, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1I have personally noticed that most diggers' knowledge of PETA is limited to what they got from some Penn and Teller clips on YouTube.
- kurtu5, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Ok tell me what is not factual from Penn and Teller? They are simply the messengers, stop attacking messengers and get to attacking what you intimate are incorrect messages.
Please. I have heard the "your not educated" or "you need to read book X" therefore you are wrong, way to much. I want to hear why you think I am wrong.

- methos75, on 05/07/2008, -4/+5True environmentalists, as in those who think we need to halt all hunting and go veggie, are idiotic wankers. Should we perhaps curb hunting, sure, but remember that we as Humans are also part of the food chain now and in all areas we are now the dominant predator. In areas were hunting has been halted, the results have proven diastorous for the prey animal populations as over-breeding, genetic disorders, diease, etc go rampart through the populations and many animals suffer and die through starvation. In my experiance, it seems that many so called environmentalist at least in the non-professional arena, as in Digg users who fashion themselves as one, really have no clue as to how food cycles work, Prey-Predator ratios, what animals are prey for what, what animales inhabit what areas, etc and are just basically screaming save the animals based on its the cool Lib thing to do.
Point in example, I was culling coyotes in Colorado recently, and while driving through a small town was besieged by a young tree hugger female who yelled at me for murdering Foxes. Seriously, if you cannot tell the difference between a fox and a Coyote, your not an environmentalist, your an idiot. As to the Veggie thing, some animals just evolved to be eaten. Its not cruel, its not murder, its how Nature designed it. I once heard one Eco Nut Luddite preach that Animals would be better off and live better lives if all humans died out. News Flash idiot, If we don't kill them then something else would like a Rat-raptor or something. There have always been prey and there have always been predators. Last I looked Allosaurs were not Tree eaters, Smilodons didn't eat rocks, and Lions cannot survive off good intentions. IMO, better a Cow be shot and die quickly, than to be eaten alive by a Timber wolf. and remember, the eating of meat is directly related to the evolution of intelligence in both humans and animals, those who hunt and eat meat are vastly more intelligent than those who don't.- Oea420, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Thank you. It is very true, going from foragers and gatherers to hunters does vastly increase the intelligence of a species, for obvious reasons.
- nessajune21, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Orcas are dolphins.
They are actually categorized as a delphinid, and are the largest type of dolphin.
Perhaps this killing was just a type of intra-familial competition for food and territory, with the fat big brother obviously kicking the crap out of the little brother (great analogy, I know).
- DiggasWAttitude, on 05/07/2008, -8/+32As a tree hugging wanker, I want to be the first to say eat a dick. - thesio, on 05/07/2008, -5/+7This is cannibalism!! Killer whales aren't whales they're a species of dolphin.
- Ian89, on 05/07/2008, -2/+1Yeah, I was thinking the exact same thing. It also annoyed me that the article kept calling them "whales" (I know that's pompous, but still). It's fascinating nonetheless.
- afx1, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6a less-delicious species of dolphin you mean
- ChzPlz, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5If they're a different species, it's not cannibalism - it's just lunch.
- dollar0dot02, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0I agree with you that they are different species so it is no different than eagles hunting on other birds, king cobras feeding on other snakes, chimpanzees feeding on small monkeys but it opens up an interesting question - where do you draw the line?
Would tiger eating lion cub be considered cannibalism? They are separate species but can still produce a hybrid offspring?
or even more intriguing question:
Is ***** sapiens eating ***** neandertal considered cannibalism or just lunch?- kashk5, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure it was lunch back when the sapiens were munching on neanderthal bones
- kurtu5, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Probably never happened. Thals were like hummers and needed lots of gas. ***** are like civics and can hypermile during tough times. Thals just couldn't take the lean times and died of attrition. Hell homosapiens barely made it.
- davdev, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Most species will practice some sort of cannibalism. It is not uncommon for chimps to hunt and eat other chimps. Lions have been known to consume their dead in times of drought. Typically if an animal is in anyway a carnivore, there will be times where they consume members of the same species.
- kashk5, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure it was lunch back when the sapiens were munching on neanderthal bones

- brstilson, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3Actually Orcas are a species of porpoise.
- 3tcp, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1It's like chimps eating monkeys.... or humans eating monkeys which they do in some parts of the world
It isn't cannibalism but it's too close for comfort given the typical western meat diet of fish/birds/red meat. - asus2000, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Yes. Buried as incorrect. Orcas aren't whales..
- galvo, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4I watched a documentary recently of Orca's annihilating humpback (I think) whales. It was the first time an attack had been seen by people and researchers. It lasted hours and was very violent. Those Orca's are tactical, they hunt like wolves.
Props to huge dolphins killing smaller dolphins.- kurtu5, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1I saw a video of a blue whale attack. Apparently they kept at it for a few days before they killed it.
