1st Time in History, Killer Whales Filmed Hunting Dolphins!

environmentalgraffiti.com — A tour operator in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, unwittingly stumbled into the history books this weekend when he, his boat captain, and four tourists were in the right place at the right time to make the first recording ever of Orca whales hunting dolphins. [Photo]

      If they have been known to hunt porpoises, why is it such a shocker that they would hunt a dolphin?

Orca pods have "cultures" that differ from place to place around the world (Orcas are the only other mammal to live in every place on the planet like humans - including antartica) and not all will hunt other cetaceans. Still, it's not exactly cannibalism. More like humans eating other apes. Maybe not ideal, but it's food, if you don't mind killing your cousins.

      I saw this once, the blue whale kept trying to dive to escape, but the orcas kept preventing the blue from diving by blocking its pectoral fins from steering down. Meanwhile others bit at it and eventually bleed out and died. I think they worked at it for a couple of days.

          For example, this is addressed to those wankers who rail against styrofoam and plastic bags. In the big ecological picture, these products are better for the environment than paper products.

          Yes cute things get caught in bags and choke on them, but the impact of pulp paper far far outweighs the impact on ecosystems. Yes, plastic garbage in wilderness areas looks ugly, but has a tiny impact on those wildernesses. It simply bugs us. Yes, a sea of garbage in the pacific is ugly, but it actually creates nice habitats for many pelagic organisms.

          Now if you wish to volunteer and say hey I am a "tree hugging wanker" who ascribes to the humans are evil and nature is good philosophy, then you are, well, a tree hugging wanker.

            Some pods of dolphins are never cruel like other pods can be, as its part of their culture to survive in other ways. Do they call the other pods cruel?

            You are not cruel like other persons can be. Do you call them cruel?

          Peta's official position is that humans shouldn't even eat meat regardless of whether or not you personally hunt. Your lack of extremism doesn't give them any credibility.

Should we perhaps curb hunting, sure, but remember that we as Humans are also part of the food chain now and in all areas we are now the dominant predator. In areas were hunting has been halted, the results have proven diastorous for the prey animal populations as over-breeding, genetic disorders, diease, etc go rampart through the populations and many animals suffer and die through starvation. In my experiance, it seems that many so called environmentalist at least in the non-professional arena, as in Digg users who fashion themselves as one, really have no clue as to how food cycles work, Prey-Predator ratios, what animals are prey for what, what animales inhabit what areas, etc and are just basically screaming save the animals based on its the cool Lib thing to do.

      Point in example, I was culling coyotes in Colorado recently, and while driving through a small town was besieged by a young tree hugger female who yelled at me for murdering Foxes. Seriously, if you cannot tell the difference between a fox and a Coyote, your not an environmentalist, your an idiot. As to the Veggie thing, some animals just evolved to be eaten. Its not cruel, its not murder, its how Nature designed it. I once heard one Eco Nut Luddite preach that Animals would be better off and live better lives if all humans died out. News Flash idiot, If we don't kill them then something else would like a Rat-raptor or something. There have always been prey and there have always been predators. Last I looked Allosaurs were not Tree eaters, Smilodons didn't eat rocks, and Lions cannot survive off good intentions. IMO, better a Cow be shot and die quickly, than to be eaten alive by a Timber wolf. and remember, the eating of meat is directly related to the evolution of intelligence in both humans and animals, those who hunt and eat meat are vastly more intelligent than those who don't.

      They are actually categorized as a delphinid, and are the largest type of dolphin.
      Perhaps this killing was just a type of intra-familial competition for food and territory, with the fat big brother obviously kicking the crap out of the little brother (great analogy, I know).

Lions have been known to consume their dead in times of drought. Typically if an animal is in anyway a carnivore, there will be times where they consume members of the same species.

  • galvo, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4I watched a documentary recently of Orca's annihilating humpback (I think) whales. It was the first time an attack had been seen by people and researchers. It lasted hours and was very violent. Those Orca's are tactical, they hunt like wolves.

    Props to huge dolphins killing smaller dolphins.
