- jstohler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+88Not surprising. An equal number of people don't know who the president is.
- TonyBuzzan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+52^ The same 13% would probably actually find that funny.
- Habemus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4313% don't speak English and answered "¿Qué?" which the volunteer intern pollster-dude checked off his list as "never heard of it."
- catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32The ironic thing is most of those 13% probably don't sit on the computer all day and walk around listing to their ipods or drive hummers. They probably live in a rural area and don't consume nearly as much energy as most of us.
- GenericUser2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20This 13% percent just coincidentally happens to be in charge of the US government, it would seem.
- catenary3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19So you're saying that 87% of Americans know about global warming.
That sounds good to me.
Where's the problem? - amercer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17"13 pct of Americans not heard of global warming"? And some others don't write good and stuff.
- chucali, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13That same 13% watched Epic Movie this past weekend
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10global what?
- imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Upon further review, sources found that the entire 13% of those Americans were under the age of 7 and have therefore not taken the science class that teaches about it.
- raabco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"I agree. The 13% are probably either the poor or hard working farmers and those who live in rural areas who don't much care about global warming and are interested in just getting by."
I would think that, of anyone, the farmers would be most concerned about global warming, since it will likely affect their source of income before anyone else. It also sounds like you'd be very surprised to learn how modern farms are run these days. Not only do they enjoy indoor plumbing, but they've also recently been able to update to color TVs! - Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@rcbuse:
EVERYTHING'S made in China these days, man. - haiduz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8global who?
ROFLOMGLOL@ricebergers - Firehed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+795% of them don't give a *****.
So... I think we're 83% screwed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Never underestimate the stupidity of the masses: some are just naturally dumb while others intentionally have their head up their ass.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Flaccid or erect? Uh...just asking is all.
- goodoldharris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6uttles:
"lol, al-Reuters, the same fine journalistic institution that photoshopped pictures during the Israel-Iran (Hizbollah) skirmish this past summer. Yeah they're credible."
Reuters is a huge organization that runs thousands of stories a day, and you think a mistake once in a while means it has no credibility? Reuters, and news organizations like it, do have systems in place to ensure the accuracy of what they report. Are those systems perfect and foolproof? No. But they're still pretty good, and they're certainly better than 95% of blogs - which have no system in place at all.
But If you have sources that provide more accurate information than professional news organizations, I'd be very interested to know them and I'm sure many others would too. Could you enlighten us? - 350Zed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@homerj14
It's called Statistics... for example, there's a 99.999% you're a complete idiot for not understanding how a poll works. - Raian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Another point to note: 60% of male adult Americans can't see their penises without the aid of a reflective surface.
- Habemus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dugg down. Spam.
- Riceman13, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12"even though their country is the world's top source of greenhouse gases"
What the douchebag DOESN'T tell you is that we have the toughest environmental laws in the world... we pollute more then anyone else due to the vast amount of industry.
What the douchebag also doesn't tell you is 25% of LA smog doesn't come from LA... it comes from China.
Before criticizing, a little research helps... - anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Need a reflective surface? Ha, how sad is that!
I use my webcam. - jimmyhellstar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6accually that's a pretty good number... it means 87% do. Everyone should know that globe warming has been happening for thousands of years now... tell your friends!
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"We need a way to slow global warming by reducing carbon dioxide emissions but the people's hands are tied by the people in power leaving them no alternatives."
BS. You can choose to drive a Humvee or you can choose to drive a Prius. You can choose to upgrade your appliances to newer more energy efficient ones. You can choose to better insulate your house if it is poorly insulated. You can choose to put solar panels on your roof. There's plenty you can do without govt. intervention or mandates. - zachninme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@illegalcortex
E would represent the number of people in the country who actually do research themselves instead of sitting in front of the TV believing everything they hear. - wintermd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8What the douchebag also doesn't tell you is the so called environmentalists, shut down any new Nuke power, so in their place we have coal power.
Good job guys, you sure messed up the environment. - anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Simply put:
Pollution = Makes atmosphere thicker = World warms up = Global warming - Gadren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The sad thing is that the 87% who have heard of global warming need to be divided up into people who think that it's not happening, that humans can't possibly be responsible, that it's a global conspiracy, or a good thing because it brings about the Second Coming:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/24/AR2007012401807.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"13 pct of Americans not heard of global warming"
And the other 87 % denies its existence. - JimMessenger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The author wrote good enough to get a job at Reuters. If you don't like it complain to them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2for it to mean anything they should see what percentage of people in the rest of the world know about it.
- bimmerboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...and the same 13% believe Canadians live in igloos.
Those saying China polluting US is bloody nonsense!!! China's MASSIVE export of machinery and electronics, clothing, textiles, base metals, plastics and rubber to the US for your consumption combined with export from US to China of tones and tones of rubbish, trash, toxic materials and electronics shows that US is indirectly contributing more to global warming outside of its own country. That would make the US the largest polluters and the largest energy and resource hogs on Earth. If countries in the Western world weren't so frivolous in consuming, the world would not be in the state it is in now. China produces and supply mainly to the Western world and the pollution rise comes with demand. Stop blaming others especially China without looking at the larger picture. It's a shame that the 87% that do know about global warming don't see it in that way. - Saint3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This just in, 13% of all Digg users will believe any statistic which makes the front page.
- SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In the United States, 13% of the population considered themselves very lucky. Not exposed to blatant fear-mongering propaganda from the environmental crowd is priceless.
- mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're right about Kyoto and China. But humans put out 150 times more CO2 than volcanoes do. In 2005 humans burned enough fossil fuels to add 26 billion tons of CO2 to the atmosphere, which currently contains 2800 billion tons of CO2, up from 2100 billion tons 150 years ago. This is adding to the current natural warming cycle making it more extreme. The 70s were the end of a cooling trend, partly natural and partly caused by sulphate aerosols produced by burning high sulfur coal. The aerosols are opaque to visible light Sun, and blocked sunlight coming to the Earth. International treaties mostly ended the sulphate aerosols by requiring scrubbers in power plant smokestacks.
The Chinese are now burning high sulfur coal, though there are factions within China which are moving to abate this. China's production of CO2 will surpass that of the US sometime in 2009. By 2050, the world will be burning enough fossil fuels to add 43 billion tons of CO2 to the atmosphere. - argoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wish I was in that lucky 13%.
- llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12I'm sorry, but who cares. It's not like informing the 13% is going to make a difference. If 100% of the people knew about and we did nothing about it doesn't change the fact that we are not doing anything about it. We need a way to slow global warming by reducing carbon dioxide emissions but the people's hands are tied by the people in power leaving them no alternatives. It is the responsibility of the of the 1% of people running the country to find a better way and believe me they know about global warming already, they just choose to do nothing about it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+14"An equal number of people don't know who the president is."
And that tells you to not take these polls at face value. Seriously, people just joke around or give you sarcastic remarks. - roomaustin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder if any of those 13 % are children.
- drouk1556, on 10/12/2007, -0/+213% of Americans need to buy a goddamn newspaper once in a while.
- willpost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From a 1993 report:
Out of 191 million adults in the US, as many as 44 million (23%) cannot read a newspaper or fill out a job application. Another 50 million (26%) more cannot read or comprehend above the eighth grade level. According to education experts it requires ninth grade competence to understand the instructions for an antidote on a bottle of corrosive kitchen lye. - charlesfrith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Are they sentient?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I agree. The 13% are probably either the poor or hard working farmers and those who live in rural areas who don't much care about global warming and are interested in just getting by.
- dicerandom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When I hear figures like this I have to wonder how the poll was conducted. Was it, for instance, one of those annoying people at malls who walk up and ask you questions? Because I generally give them some sort of curt response which will guarantee them leaving me alone. Example:
Annoying pollster: "Excuse me sir, have you heard of global warming?"
Me: "No." *walks away*
My favorite is telling the "Are you registered to vote?" people that I'm a convicted felon :D - aylons, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It may be, but at least some of these 13% vote. And I have a clue about for who.
- quine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And this just in... a percentage of the % Percent Department of Redundancy would like to thank the masses for their campaign contributions...
- zachninme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its funny how many people are shooting down others who bring up the truth that Global Warming is either not happening, or it is just a natural cycle.
They continue to shoot them down by saying CO2 does this, that, then the other thing, and voila! Global Warming.
And although they are correct, the forgot the most important thing -- the CO2
CO2 levels have gone way, way down, and have been steadily decreasing even before we could think of "Global Warming" (thus proving it isn't just people trying to stop it).
And, on top of that, most cities' average temperature has gone down, not up.
There are some exceptions, major growth places admittedly have gone up in both temp & CO2, such as New York, Beijing, etc., but if all the sudden you throw 10,000 times more people into a city, somethings bound to happen.
So the little warming that is happening is there, but it is not anywhere near "Global".
If you actually do any research from primary sources, not news casts/articles in the news, and always look at graphs like they are trying to trick you, you will actually learn something.
To add: before, some scientists thought that the gene pool was declining, because all the "bad" people had excessive children, and people who probably couldn't survive on their own (say, mentally retarded) were getting the chance to live.
Because these scientists got their work widely published and not examined, people saw this, and one man, you may know him as Hitler, tried to counter it by killing what he felt were the weak ones, Jews and Gypsies among the millions.
I'm done. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I'm sure a lot more than 13% of Americans don't know anything about other countries. Ask them to find Iraq on a map. "Eye-rack? Duh..."
- Kourgin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2who in the what now?
- djvchris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OCD? Are you the kind of guy that freaks out when people come close to touching his computer monitor or any portion of a CD other than the rim?
