- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -6/+149I like what Jon Stewart said. Something along the lines of "Wars - a way for Americans to learn geography."
- fuxxx, on 08/14/2008, -8/+72Haha congratulations for being ignorant!
- FuzzyCat, on 08/14/2008, -4/+53What? Look at half the town names in the USA - they simply copied the names from other countries (mostly the UK). Sometimes they change them a little by adding 'New' in front of it... Want some examples?
New York == York
Liverpool (PA) == Liverpool
Birmingham (AL)== Birmingham
seriously the list goes on forever, even large areas of the States - New England, New Hampshire...
Don;t get me wrong I'm not bitching about the copying, I'm bitching about anyone thinking it's odd, different or new.
- goblindegook, on 08/14/2008, -1/+44That was Ambrose Bierce. The quote is "War is God's way of teaching Americans geography."
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -3/+35I wish Russia would've attacked Georgia, USA instead. Maybe they would've hit Soulja boy.
- igyigyigy, on 08/14/2008, -1/+33Why is that guy John using the same name as the other John I know?
- envyme, on 08/14/2008, -6/+34Moron.
- windmarble, on 08/14/2008, -14/+41I live in Georgia, USA. And when I heard that Georgia was fighting with Russia, I thought to myself, Why isn't Russia invading other states?
- diabulos, on 08/14/2008, -5/+32Actually the country was reffered by the anglosaxons as Georgia since the late middle ages and the state was only named in 1732, so the STATE has the same name as the country not the other way around, lets not be US centric here!
- str1fe, on 08/14/2008, -0/+20I live in Georgia USA as well, and immediately assumed it was Georgia the country. That I live in Georgia is one of the main reasons i actually remember that Georgia is a country in the first place - I bet if there was a separate country named Oregon, most Americans that knew about it would actually be from that state.
- HallenbeckJoe, on 08/14/2008, -1/+21but they says theres tanks...

New Hampshire == Hampshire
etc. - polalion, on 08/14/2008, -0/+19It's Deutschland.
- TheOther1, on 08/14/2008, -1/+19As a resident of GA, I am begging you to STFU
- jwolcott, on 08/14/2008, -2/+19"gotta be honest, when these stories started popping up on digg, i thought usa was at war with russia"
"did too but only cause I didn't know there was another place called Georgia other than in the US. That and I know nothing about politics and geography."
You guys are American, right?
P.S. Don't feel bad, your President didn't know about Georgia (the country) before he became President either. - 2oonhed, on 08/14/2008, -0/+16because the other states just are not as sassy
- gmiley, on 08/14/2008, -6/+21You do realize it was mostly people that originally came from those places that named the ones here in the US after them. So you can basically blame your own countrymen for it. So if you want to make fun of them, then just realize that most of the locations here: the ones that are French in origin were more than likely named by people fresh from France, the ones of English origin were named by people form England, and so on and so forth.
- TheOther1, on 08/14/2008, -1/+16But he's not hip and relevant like Stewart so it doesn't count until Jon says it!
/s - skywake, on 08/14/2008, -0/+14In Australia we have New South Wales so its not just an American thing.
- airwalke, on 08/14/2008, -1/+15When I was in grade school, my teacher was doing a geography lesson when she asked the class to name a country in Europe or Asia. I got called on, so I told her "Georgia". She laughed and disagreed saying that it was a state. I had to point it out to her on a map. Look who's laughing now.
God Bless the USA... - Elephant789, on 08/14/2008, -4/+17American by any chance?
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -8/+19 More like, The English are unoriginal. RTFA next time.
- GalacticRerun, on 08/14/2008, -0/+10I hope you don't wonder what the original south Wales is like. It's underwhelming.
- Rudegar, on 08/14/2008, -0/+10maybe Georgia were on their minds?
- ell0bo, on 08/14/2008, -0/+9I grew up in Lebanon, PA. When I was 6 there was the major unrest in Lebanon the country (granted we don't pronounce our town like the country). I was out somewhere with my mom and heard about bombings and killings in Lebanon and started to throw a tantrum because I wanted to go home to check on my dog. So, figuring this guy is from Georgia, I'll say if he's 16 it's a plausible story.
- str1fe, on 08/14/2008, -0/+9Dugg for "they ain't gonna burn 'lanta"
- str1fe, on 08/14/2008, -1/+9As a resident of Georgia the US State, I immediately realized "Oh, it's probably Georgia the country next to Russia, not the state that I live in." It doesn't make sense for a country to declare war on just one state in a country.
- FuzzyCat, on 08/14/2008, -1/+9I doubt that very much. York in England existed before the Roman Empire.
- dafragsta, on 08/14/2008, -0/+7Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
Leave the west behind
Moscow girls make me sing and shout
And Georgia's always on my ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-mind - Elephant789, on 08/14/2008, -3/+10To be honest, I never knew there was a place named Georgia in the USA, really! But everyone knows of the country. The world doesn't revolve around you Americans you know? (DIG DOWN NOW). It seems like your are trying to defend your lack of geographical knowledge. I know I will be dugg down because the majority of the people here are from the USA and might be offended by my comment.
- TheCatsPants, on 08/14/2008, -1/+8Same in the UK, we have place-names here named by the peoples who came into the country, and guess what, they are foreign names because (*shock*) the people moving into the UK didn't speak english. As for re-using town names, it's perfectly normal for people who may never see home again start calling the new landscapes they see after the places they miss or are reminded of from home.
- justok, on 08/14/2008, -4/+11what's his religion got to do with it?
- F16Freek, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6...people out there in our nation don't have maps, and, uh, I believe that our education like such as South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and...I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., err, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our...
- CosmicJustice, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6The country Georgia is (arguably) named for St. George. Knights returning from the Crusades told the story of St. George "The Dragon Slayer" and George became a popular name in England leading eventually to an English king(s) named George. Georgia (the US state) is named for an English King George. It's all tied together.
- TheOther1, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6Or TI, Whitney, Michael Vick, Cynthia McKinney, Kriss Kross, or, if we are lucky, the entire Atlanta Hawks!
- tama00, on 08/14/2008, -5/+11Exhibit A: windmarble
A male from Georgia who failed geography in high school. - webkami, on 08/14/2008, -2/+8You know who else is doing it?
McCain - dungar, on 08/14/2008, -2/+8Why is Beirut in the USA as well as in Lebanon?
Why is Cairo in the USA as well as in Egypt?
But the most zealously copied must be Jerusalem. There are multiple instances of Jerusalem in the USA:
# Jerusalem OH
# Jerusalem AR
# Jerusalem RI
# Jerusalem GA
# Jerusalem NC
# Jerusalem VT
# Jerusalem MI
# Jerusalem TN
# Jerusalem UT
# Jerusalem MD
# Jerusalem AL
Not to mention a host of ancient old world cities!
Why? - Brodels, on 08/14/2008, -1/+7Interesting article, also I never knew that the –ia suffix meant 'state of'. Language is awesome.
- plingboot, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6Not quite. Read the article. Georgia the state derived it's name from King George of England. Georgia the country from the saint.
Other place names in the US, Paris, New York, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Birmingham, etc. etc. etc. derived their names from the original city that I assume the settlers where from... but Georgia state isn't a copy of the country. - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -1/+6Read the article , putz.
- GoatMonkey2112, on 08/14/2008, -0/+5I live in Georgia also, but I immediately knew it was the country. However, the second thing I thought of was Red Dawn.
- Cubeforce, on 08/14/2008, -0/+5That's a lot of Cantons for Colbert to insult.
- 11oops, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4But why does Paris, France have the same name as Paris Hilton?
- psevium, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4@str1fe: This just in! Boston declares war on Asia
- ghuytro, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4There's no way this is a true story... is it?
Don't most people know of Georgia because that's where Stalin was born? - deinosmos, on 08/14/2008, -1/+5Actually that was Ambrose Bierce but that's all right, he predates pepsi.
- yohan, on 08/14/2008, -3/+6Are we truncating sarcasm to just "s" now? Is that what's hip and relevant?
- cadmiumpaint, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3very interesting. its always nice to see stuff thats educational and worthwhile make it to the front page.
also kudos for www.slate.com.....a great daily site that you should check out frequently if you like being informed. - Zipko, on 08/14/2008, -2/+5sure, next you're going to try telling me Lancaster and Chester were taken from England too.
