youtube.com — What happens if you ask a black child to choose a white or a black doll? "Which is the bad doll? Which doll is the nice doll?" This is goddamn disturbing...

- MidgardMurda, on 05/09/2008, -3/+21It's been burned into everyone's brain that White is clean/holy/pure and black is dirty/unholy/tainted...it's ***** up but true. I'm not surprised they think that way...
- mediaphile, on 05/09/2008, -4/+5This original started in the psyches of our late, late ancestors. Dark was a time when it was hard to see and the predators came. Light was what made the plants grow and where you were safe. It's sad that this simple fear of the unknown darkness has permeated through the cultures and come to manifest itself in the perception of race.
- dralezero, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1You are right. It is true.

- Rikm, on 05/09/2008, -9/+15I guarantee that if you did this study with Asian and white dolls and asked a bunch of Japanese kids those questions, the results would be positive towards the Asian doll.
It's not the ***** up world we live in, it's the ***** up country you live in.
America isn't a planet and to be American doesn't mean the same as to be a ***** sapien. Try expanding your world view a little.- TheNinjaJesus, on 05/09/2008, -6/+4lol, if you think ***** like this is limited to America then maybe YOU should expand your world just a little bit.
- Rikm, on 05/09/2008, -5/+8Check my comment history. I'm a white, western, male, who has chosen to leave the ***** of my native country to live in Asia.
Eastern/western, black/white/yellow, English/Chinese. It's going to be pretty hard for me to expand my world view more than I already have.
I never said that these problems are not limited to the US. What I did say was that not every society shows the same pattern of bias, and thus it is not a world or human nature issue, as implied by MidgardMurda when he wrote the ***** up *world* *we* live in, but one specific to certain societies, America being one of them, because that is the one shown in the video. - 8bitflu, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Alright everybody, let's all take time to review this asshat's comment history.

- WTFppl, on 05/09/2008, -5/+3What does it take to be American? Well I know for a fact, you can live in Brazil and still be American. I think it's silly we call ourselves "America" and call every place else on the same Americas Continents something else. Were do we get the ignorance to give our individual selves a title based off name of a large area of land, completely ignoring what our original title is and 'why' it is...
...I'm a Statesman of the "United States of America"!- Gir53457, on 05/09/2008, -3/+3I live my life as an American the same way everyone else does. the same way the English live as the English. The French as the French. Our only differences are here we come from. I love my country no matter what bureaucracy, government or ignorant bastard tries to do to it and I would never forsake my heritage. As far as I'm concerned the left and the right can go shove it, I'm trying to get by with what I got.
- Navicerts, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1"I think it's silly we call ourselves "America" and call every place else on the same Americas Continents something else."
People in other countries call us "Americans" - so don't act like it's a problem isolated to "United states citizens". - WTFppl, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Well. I don't know about your education, but I found out I'm to call myself a 'statesman', as this is "The United States"
- mediaphile, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8I've seen many examples of racism and stereotyping of black people in modern Japanese culture. Don't believe for a second that people from the United States are the only ones capable of racism.
- yuutokun, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Rikm, not sure if you've ever lived in Japan but its quite possible the opposite of what you said is true. I live here and there is quite a inferiority complex to westerners, particularly whites. So I could totally see it going similarily in Japan.
- TheNinjaJesus, on 05/09/2008, -6/+4lol, if you think ***** like this is limited to America then maybe YOU should expand your world just a little bit.

- apothekari, on 05/09/2008, -2/+23@ Mister freeze,Yes it is real and it is a relatively recent experiment, identical to one that was first done in the late fifty's early sixties and which was cited by former Supreme Court Justice many times in his pre- justice days as a civil rights attorney if I recall correctly.
These results are identical to the original experiment and are just as heartrending.- Kas70, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Wish I could give you more diggs for knowing your history.
- BlaenkDenum, on 05/09/2008, -4/+13It's even more saddening when you realize that the look on their faces looks like they feel they should be guilty about something
- masterm1nd, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2You may be on to something. Could the skin color and approval of the person asking them possibly have something to do with it?
- Kas70, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1It's childhood confusion when led to the realization that you look like the "bad" doll. There is no understanding of why or how.
- masterm1nd, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5Yeah, and if the adult asks 'which one is the "bad doll"', he just suggested that one is indeed bad. I'd like to see them do the 'study' without suggesting that one is bad.
- mediaphile, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Then what exactly do you ask or study?
- masterm1nd, on 05/09/2008, -2/+5You'd have to think of a way to find out the child's opinion without suggesting one is bad, good, better, or worse. I would also do half with a white questioner and half a black questioner. Maybe they could ask which one do you like and they'd either pick one or say both. Than you could ask which one they like more and why. Why they don't like the other one etcetera. It is not a valid study if the conclusion you're trying to draw is suggested in anyway. In a statistics class I found out that pollsters and survey makers (even the ones who do it for a living) have to revise their questions many many times before they are completely non-suggestive or as best as possible.
- UTKEngineer, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2masterm1ind, good post. It's a mix of begging the question and false dilemma. When you ask "Which doll is X?" you're setting the rules that one doll is X and one doll isn't X.
I also found it very curious that when asked which doll is bad/ugly/whatever, the kids hesitated and looked to the interviewer for some kind of signal. That tells me that, at least to some degree, the results are tainted.
Perhaps a better way to study this is to ask the child to tell you a story involving both dolls and then develop a metric to judge the activity of each doll in the story as good or bad. - masterm1nd, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1Good story idea.
- Logicexe, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1masterm1nd, I think the point of the experiment was to see what a child's reaction to that false dilemma would be. Planting the idea that one is bad and one is good is the whole point of the study. Also it's important to note that the first question was "which one is nicer" implying that they both could be nice.
Anyway, you have some very valid criticisms. I wonder if this study has been done in situations that the child could not actually see the interviewer, then tested to see whether a male or female voice would illicit a different response.
- masterm1nd, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2You may be on to something. Could the skin color and approval of the person asking them possibly have something to do with it?
- masterm1nd, on 05/09/2008, -5/+2Would it make you sad if they picked the black doll?
- Barackalypse, on 05/09/2008, -4/+0That's my litmus test for a liberal too.
- pingwax, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4It would make me sad anytime a child picked a doll as good or evil only because of its color. This is particularly sad when the doll they chose as "bad" reflects the child's own ethnicity as it would seem to reflect, consciously or otherwise, on the child's self esteem. That was the point of the video; I would have thought it was obvious.
- Navicerts, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3The results really would only make sense in aggregate. The child had to choose one of the dolls.
- masterm1nd, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1That was my point. Either one they picked would be sad...
- Logicexe, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1I would be slightly relieved if the children had chosen the black dolls. A kid that age would be used to being around their family who would of course share their color. It's plausible that that familiarity could translate into the child liking the black doll better and thinking that it's more nice because the white doll would seem strange and different from what the child is used to seeing. That bias could disappear easily as the child grows up and is exposed to more and more white people. It would be interesting to see this same experiment done in Africa where western culture doesn't exist.
Then again, it could just be a simple color preference and have absolutely nothing to do with race.
- holysocks, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8blame the music
- Kas70, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3The music when they first did this experiment 50 years ago was quite tame.
- Beaver1279, on 05/09/2008, -1/+0Chicken or egg? By the way African Americans are responsible for many other kinds of music than the rap I'm sure you are speaking of.
- Tayls, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2Yeah, that just ***** up my night. But it's really something to think about, at least.
- Tayls, on 05/09/2008, -7/+4On a side note, at least they got the answers right.
- GuitaristTom, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3I guess so... I dunno, if it is as depressing as you might think though. I mean, I'm sure this test would work just the same with a black piece of paper or a white piece of paper. I've always figured that humans, and I'm sure most creatures, associate white with things like light and happiness, and black with darkness and fear/ sadness.
- Kas70, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1You assume way too much and look at history (and a dictionary) not enough.
- mediaphile, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Uh, no, this is true. The association between the darkness and predators, and light with safety permeates all societies. The struggle between white people and black people is a relatively new one in the history of man when one considers how little time those two cultures have actually had contact with each other. Even in ancient African civilizations, darkness is associated with evil.
So, yeah, I think I covered your criticisms.

- Barackalypse, on 05/09/2008, -5/+1Lets see, we've got genocide in Africa, starvation in many countries, torture and political repression and your liberal ass is sad because some kids think black dolls are bad? Perhaps growing up in bad neighborhoods they've learned something based on who they see committing crimes and who they see trying to pick up the pieces. http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/race.htm
- UTKEngineer, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2This is something I've thought since I read about the first study, but have never seen it discussed at length. Everyone sees this study and assumes the kids identify the black doll as bad/ugly because THE MAN has been telling them that is so. But at that age, the kids have probably had VERY limited unsupervised interaction with white folk but have been exposed to other black people in their neighborhood extensively.
Is it possible that these kids associate black people as being mean because they're exposed to other black kids who are mean but their only exposure to white people are social workers and tv shows? - JimbobtheSalesm, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1UTKE: Watch the whole documentary. It's not just these little girls that associate White with nice. They interview high school aged Black girls as well and they talk about how they've always seen White as more beautiful. They've grown up feeling ugly and wrong for being the color they are.
Barackalypse: 1. You have the dumbest name ever.
2. Read your comment carefully and maybe you'll see why you're a racist bastard.

- purplelantern, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2The only thing sad is this misunderstanding get re-discovered every couple of years. This experiment has been performed all over the world including Africa and Asia. With kids with little or no exposure to outside culture or people of different race. The result has always been pretty uniform. It could be because kids simply prefer lighter and brighter colour, or it could just be the way the experiment was set up.
Don't jump to conclusion. - dt3k, on 05/09/2008, -2/+3Why does it make you sad? Kids are smarter than you think they are. Maybe they just know the facts, More likely to go to prison, more likely to get an STD, more likely to be born without a father figure, more likely to be convicted of a felony, more likely to be on food stamps and unemployment, more likely to be raised by grand-ma, more likely to grow up in poverty, more likely to be a victim of sexual abuse by a relative.
You people need to stop living in the dark.- Navicerts, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2The only thing you listed that would make one "bad" is more likely to go to prison (convicted of a felony is the same thing imo). Do the other things that are listed make a person "bad" in your view?
- dt3k, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2More likely to get an STD - yes, more likely to be born without a father - yes (not the kid directly, but the race of the parents directly), more likely to be a victim of sexual abuse by a relative (yes - same as before, it's the uncles man, the uncles) Chris Rock "your black uncle paid for you to go to college but he molested you too." - something like that. I'm sure i'll be called a racist simply for stating facts, why is it stated facts = racism?
- Navicerts, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2The only thing you listed that would make one "bad" is more likely to go to prison (convicted of a felony is the same thing imo). Do the other things that are listed make a person "bad" in your view?
- sny1120, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Do the same test in south africa and you will get reversed results
- jaewon223, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1where is the control in this experiment? did they ask white kids which doll was the "nice" doll? also they needed more than just two colors. they need like orange, blue, red. you can't make inferences here because only what seemed to be a small portion of the entire clip was shown.
i hope people realize this but from th comment sections it doesn't seem so- JimbobtheSalesm, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1You're an idiot. The experiment is about Race not color.
- MisterFreeze, on 05/09/2008, -4/+35God damn, is this for real?
- mandagrrl, on 05/09/2008, -36/+77Heartbreaking indeed.
All those children were beautiful in their own right. Just shows how truly effed up our education system is even at that VERY impressionable age.- Inthenameofmine, on 05/09/2008, -5/+64I really think it's more the media. I mean, how many times have you seen a white crack dealer being busted on TV? And what's about all this "I'm a rapping ***** and I'm rich bitch" nonsense?
- mandagrrl, on 05/09/2008, -2/+8I work in the ECE field and come in contact with the "educators" on a daily basis. You would be surprised at who/what is out there teaching our children. Especially in State and Federal run programs.
- Frnnkdlxx, on 05/09/2008, -2/+18I was talking to a white guy about how John Taylor Gatto exposed the purposeful degredation of our education system as well as Margaret Sangers relish for "exterminating all the blacks" and how in the early 1920's, before the great depression blacks were one of the fastest growing american subgroups with professionals in all forms of American society. Owners of businesses, scientists, inventors, 90% legitemacy rates, and all around incredible. but today, we are the total opposite, with a 90% illegitemacy rate. Hardly a mention of any of our current or prior successes and with all of america suffering from lack of historical insight.
ANYWAYS! let me get to the point, he began to tell me that hey, today his aunt is a public school teacher in a basically all black school and the teachers hardly even try to teach because as he told me she put it "it's worthless. These people are incapable of learning"
Take it or leave it. These are our teachers. I remember myyself, having to correct one of my teachers in high school on a number of occasions. That's when I realized that I didn't need to be in school anymore. Not only was it obviously stagnant, but these people are getting paid to not teach.- Kas70, on 05/09/2008, -2/+3I am from Utah but I and my children lived for a short time in the deep South. I'm not slamming all teachers in the South, however, my kids came home irritated that the teachers knew less than they did. Something to be said for going to the white schools...
- greenamp, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Blame the educators huh? You guys really don't know wtf you're talking about. You hear it and regurgitate without any facts or 1st hand experience.
The fact of the matter is, illiteracy and poor education starts at the home. If parents don't give a ***** what their kid does, what she watches, what she learns, what she eats, do you think an educator is going to be able to wave a magic wand and change the kid's lives?
The reason our education system is not successful is because it is designed to compliment good parenting and teaching at home. Our education system assumes children in its walls are being taught their numbers and alphabets to some degree before they start kindergarden. It assumes children are being helped after school and are being cared for. And this is the root of the failure.
My wife teaches 1st grade, and she has done so for about 10 years now in a school composed of nearly 100% poor, minority children. You would be completely shocked if you knew just how low many of her children are when they get to her. I'm talking kids who can barely even talk because they don't know how, kids who don't even know their names, kids who haven't even been potty trained, don't know how to brush their teeth, have no concept of numbers at all, and the list goes on.
Take what you will from my comment but know this: In her experience, less than 5% of her parents children ever show up for parent/teacher conferences, ever. These are parents who work 2 and sometimes 3 jobs, work night shifts, etc., but they still show up to conferences because they ***** care about their kids. And you know what? Out of those 5% whose parents actually care enough about them to show up and be informed on their child's progress, 100% are successful.
Take it how ever you want.
- tfletch, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1Compared to being shown white faces, both white and black people have increased activity in a brain area responding to threatening situations, when they are shown black faces.
http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn7355- Kas70, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2In some ways, I find that reasonable given the crime rate in certain areas and the amount of black faces shown on COPS etc. - not that I like it. That's fear and possible prejudice combined. This study is about a complete lack of esteem black children have in their blackness and the unique qualities they possess. There is an effect to being surrounded by definitions of beauty that don't resemble you and definitions of "bad" that do resemble you.
- dt3k, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1obviously you never watch Cops, I see white crackheads getting busted every episode.
- JimbobtheSalesm, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I think a better question is how many White people do you see on the news or on TV in general compared to Black? And (as you mentioned) when Black people are shown, how often is it a positive image?
- mandagrrl, on 05/09/2008, -2/+8I work in the ECE field and come in contact with the "educators" on a daily basis. You would be surprised at who/what is out there teaching our children. Especially in State and Federal run programs.
- manofaction, on 05/09/2008, -2/+56These kids are not old enough to be in our education system, unless you're talking about preschool. Don't blame the teachers for this one.
- mandagrrl, on 05/09/2008, -3/+3I WAS talking about preschool.. those years are pretty important when it comes to a child's development.
- greenamp, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1And parents have no responsibility in the matter do they?
- opmike, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Sorry, but I am not seeing how you are offloading any of this onto the educational system, let alone the pre-school system. Societal and cultural issues go beyond the damn school and media people. Those two are turning into scapegoat-of-the-month.
- mandagrrl, on 05/09/2008, -3/+3I WAS talking about preschool.. those years are pretty important when it comes to a child's development.
- mal1964, on 05/09/2008, -0/+11Was it effed up fifty years ago, When the test was first used? Its even sadder to see what some diggers think the problem comes from.
- Barackalypse, on 05/09/2008, -1/+0Africa, duh. I kid, I kid =)
- oldgal, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1It was worse 50 years ago - you probably would have gotten the same results from black adults.
- mal1964, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1Just shows how truly effed up our education system is even at that VERY impressionable age.
- mewho, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8The problem is not just one thing--it deeply permeates every aspect of our society. And it's not just a black or white thing. My mother (who's family is Hispanic) was told by her father not to marry the man who later became my father (he's also Hispanic) because he was too dark, and her children would "look Mexican". It's very internalized and it's very hard to unlearn.
- Kas70, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Some Asian and East Indian communities have the same "light" is better than "dark" issues. Very recently I knew a gorgeous Vietnamese girl who bleached her face, neck, arms and hands daily. I tried to talk to her about how some blacks used to do that in the "old days", but she didn't see the correlation...
- ramunenke, on 05/09/2008, -2/+5it is how children are taught. From real life to cartoons, these children have been taught dark is evil and white is pure and good. OK this is from the cartoons but even in real life, the children take cues from their parents and black people dont feel as threatened by the average white male as much as a black male. Then they go to school and learn history from the Eurocentric view and all other views are compartmentalized into months. In order to change this, there must be a complete overhaul of many of the things we love so that we may save the ones who come after.
- oo7akbnd, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2This is based on the kenneth and mamie clark study, which was a major factor in the Brown v. Board of Education decision.
Basically, this helped to show "separate but equal" wasn't really equal. Our society is in such a state that these outlooks and stereotypes permeate through our media, education, and even every day interactions.
We just keep breathing in the smog.- Kas70, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1Dugg for knowing your history too.
- jozb, on 05/09/2008, -0/+12You guys think this only happens in the US? Well take a look at the kind of ads they run in India, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWls3U7ZZ1E
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-9tcXpW1DE- Frost9999, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1There are ads for that kind of cream on the back of buses here in the UK.
- ElAssoWipo, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2Yes, they've been in school a whole three years and it made them racist. Has nothing to do with natural animosity towards physical differences. And they laugh at fat kids because they read too much fashion magazines.
- Strongo, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4The ed system? Really? Com'on you think I line kids up in my classroom to tell them they're not goodlooking or nice? What does this have to do with the ed system, please explain. Keep in mind these kids are like 3-4, which means they've been in the ed system 0-1 years.
- Robthefrog, on 05/09/2008, -2/+0Beautiful? Pedo-Alert.
- pixelwerx, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2This is the direct result of African-American culture being dictated by ignorance and greed.
Who are their heroes? Who are their role models? Professional athletes with multi-million dollar lifestyles telling poor kids they need to buy $100 shoes? Rappers who are quick to discuss their early days as drug dealers and convicted felons because it gives them "cred" and boosts their album sales? Why on Earth would anyone choose these people to look up to?
Their a plenty of black doctors, judges, engineers, architects, and professionals from all walks of life; successful black men and women with good educations who have lived admirable lives, but rather than encouraging black children to follow in their footsteps, "proud" blacks ridicule them for "trying to be white". This needs to change and only black people can change it.
Almost half of my extended family is black. Most are professionals with degrees, and all of them have careers. None of them receive government assistance, and none of them dress or act like gangsters. This is not a coincidence. - Nlewis4, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1this has nothing to do with the education system. hypothetically speaking, if a black child lives in a primarily black ghetto and is surrounded by black violence they see black as being bad.
- Gamer2k4, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Is it possible that white is just a more attractive color than brown? Is it possible that white is more representative of good than brown/black is? Think about it. Would you rather see white or brown snow? Would you rather wear white or brown? Do villians more often wear dark colors or light colors?
Why do we instantly assume that color preference (the dolls looked exactly the same, besides the color) has anything to do with racism? Isn't it more racist to assume that choices are based on race? Why wasn't there a follow up question, "Do you prefer the color white or brown?"
- Inthenameofmine, on 05/09/2008, -5/+64I really think it's more the media. I mean, how many times have you seen a white crack dealer being busted on TV? And what's about all this "I'm a rapping ***** and I'm rich bitch" nonsense?
- DanNZN, on 05/09/2008, -66/+327Hhmm, a test audience of three or four kids. That's good science.
- Spectre74, on 05/09/2008, -30/+62One is too many, regardless of the science behind it.
- DanNZN, on 05/09/2008, -8/+48All I am saying is that there could be a doll of the friggin devil at some kid would point that out as the nice one. Provocative. Now if a large group of kids reacted this way then yes, obviously there would be a problem.
- whiterice0, on 05/09/2008, -3/+5Pay no attention. You're right on. It was a sensationalist piece of garbage that was irresponsible. It's a serious issue that should be treated with some scientific soberness.
- lrdntwnd, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1There have been a few studies published recently that have shown this same thing... look it up.
- SuperMoses, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure they did a more extensive study and the simply just made this clip for TV purposes

- svetty, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3Welcome to digg.
- Spectre74, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Remain calm. It's a sentence. Melodramatic on purpose. Learn anything? If not, it doesn't apply to you. I want to ***** kiss you. Feel better? Everything under control? Ok. Let's talk about something else.
- skeletorcares, on 05/09/2008, -2/+4The test its self is flawed. Lets say that your scenario pans out. When asked, 'which doll is nice' everyone points to the black doll. Isn't that just as bad? It sure is. If you read the book Blink, it gives a non-soundbite quality explaination in one of the chapters.
- narcofiche, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Agreed. I'd like to see the same experiment done but with more babies and nationalities. I'd like to see what they pick then. These types of tests are filmed and aired because they're meant to make you feel bad. Even though this program makes you feel bad for the children, it still doesn't change the fact that the media itself is mostly to blame for perpetuating these negative stereotypes. The saddest thing is that people actually buy into it.
- skeletorcares, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1I'd like to note: I noticed this was a +5 diggs, now its a +3. That means there might be people racist against whites on digg. If you are.... stand up. Let's talk.
- SuperMoses, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1@skeletorcares, you have a ***** up way of seeing things. If people disagree with your false dilemma, it doesn't make them racist. I would point out that a true "color-blind" society would produce random results.. not all favouring one colored doll. You seem to think the results would be either all white or all black. I dugg you down for that fallacy. I also dugg your other comment down for committing another logical fallacy.
- skeletorcares, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1You have a fuct up way of reading things. 'Isn't that just as bad? It sure is.' Meaning polarity any way is just as wrong. Learn to read before you go spouting your dumbass comments off.
- DanNZN, on 05/09/2008, -8/+48All I am saying is that there could be a doll of the friggin devil at some kid would point that out as the nice one. Provocative. Now if a large group of kids reacted this way then yes, obviously there would be a problem.

- MisterFreeze, on 05/09/2008, -4/+35I agree that it's hardly a conclusive study but the results are disturbing enough to make you wonder what a broader sample would reveal.
- Samurai77, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2This test has been around for decades many many children have been tested like this, with invariably the same results. I'ts not the ed system, I don't even think its the parents, I don't know what it is or why. Sad though.
- CTK14A, on 05/09/2008, -2/+102It's not new research; the experiment is around 60 years old by now.
http://www.psychologymatters.org/clark.html- Mononuclear, on 05/09/2008, -0/+15There have been many recent repeats of this same experiment.
- zephyr42, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2With sadly, strikingly, similar results.
- xalif, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3I think the point is to see whether the perceptions have changed over the years. An experiment 60 years ago tells us nothing about what current perceptions are.
- Mononuclear, on 05/09/2008, -0/+15There have been many recent repeats of this same experiment.
- headzoo, on 05/09/2008, -1/+65The experiment has been repeated many, many times over the years. The results are always the same.
- pedo, on 05/09/2008, -3/+39hmmm, who said that was the entire test audience?
- evanbooth, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Thank you.
- Destillat, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2Exactly, through that reasoning, who said that the audience wasn't 100 kids, and that these kids were the only ones to respond like that
- Gunite, on 05/09/2008, -5/+11There are many potential flaws to this experiment - lighting conditions, race of questioner, demographic of children etc. And what do the results mean? That racism is pervasive? That Barbie advertising is effective?

To be honest with you, it's a societal lesson.
I have two gorgeous daughters. Once I was riding an escalator with one of them in a mall a couple of years ago and two good looking women where in front of me. They both saw her. One of them looked at me and the only thing she said was, "You're going to have to beat them off with a stick!"
Around five years old, my eldest started coming home and asking me why do we have dark skin. I told her that God makes everyone different. She then told me something that broke my heart. "Well I wish I was white and pretty like my friends." This conversation repeated itself a number of times. Mind you, these girls are beautiful. It's rare that people, upon meeting them for the first time, don't compliment them on their beauty. We try and remind them of this all the time.
However, when every t.v. show, every movie and every billboard shows a white face, it's only natural for one to want to mirror what they see. As my uncle once told me, "Who said life is fair?" So I don't let it bother me and teach my kids to be proud. I don't pity a short man, saying, "Man, must suck to be short. I feel so sorry for him." In the same way, white skin is seen as beautiful and that's just the way it is. No sense getting upset about it. Getting angry about it is not productive.- Modestexcuse, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3I admire your insight. I have two young children myself, and no matter their skin color, I constantly am helping to building their self esteem. No, not falsifying it, but building on the facts. There are many parents that I see who are not such a positive influence on their children.
Thanks for sharing :)

- Frnnkdlxx, on 05/09/2008, -21/+35Wtf... This pisses me off. The propoganda matrix is quite potent. If only they understood the history of the past 600 years, like most Americans do not.
Anyways, the parents didn't teach them that, just like the black child prodigy girl who was basically left to do or read whatever she wanted by her very soft spoken and open father. She was exposing white America's crimes and without any societal cues, simply based off of reading history, like I said. If only we could expose this:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZpKv9SDc_YQ
Maybe they'd better understand that in a way, each person is created equal. It is just that we are faster or slower than others in our ability to learn, adapt, etc.- anonydigg, on 05/09/2008, -3/+4I would really like to tell that to my black friends, but they would most likely ask for sources. What reputable sources could I provide them with? Otherwise they would just turn around and tell me to ***** off. (Tell me I'm ignorant and I don't know black history)
- svetty, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2Plus, you don't have any black friends.
- Frnnkdlxx, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2anony, i posted the vid, and on the right panel, i provided over 14 sources and articles. Review them all, I added statistics, from colonial up to the 1920's-1990's. google is your best friend. plus, tell your friends about dr. ivan van sertima. he should reduce their feelings of inferiority as well and then ease them into the fact that whites were the most populous slaves in America. Although more black slaves were killed during the middle passages, whites suffered the brunt of the labor.

- soumynona, on 05/09/2008, -3/+12White slavery was indentured servitude. many of these people signed contracts of indenture where a wealthy person would put up the money for a person's boat trip, which would be repaid over a contracted amount of years by unpaid labor. However, the owner of the contract would be required to provide room, food, and clothing to the servant, and generally some articles of clothing on completion of the contracted years. The indentured servant had rights, could own personal property (but not land) and the contract can be broken if the person for whom the servant works mistreats him/her. You can not compare that to the enslavement of African peoples.
- Kas70, on 05/09/2008, -3/+3Well said. You forgot to mention one glaring benefit white slaves had over black slaves. If they escaped, they could blend into society.
- Frnnkdlxx, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2i guess the irish didn't have accents that were easily recognizeable. i guess there was countryside not occupied by ruthless and angry natives. yes. you certainly have read facts about any particular subject in the past aside from hearsay and i commend your great mind.

- geoman2k, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4yea, the it wasn't just the slavery that was wrong, it was the fact that africans were concidered "less" than white people- less inteligent, less worthy of rights and freedoms, etc. i wouldn't compare indentured servatude (which i *did* in fact learn about in school, i don't know what school you went to) to being kidnapped from your home and family in africa, being bound on a slaveship and sold in a market. these are very different things.
- Frnnkdlxx, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2that's not true. there was a book that was produced in the late 1700's to early 1800's that was written on how to control your black slaves and how to maintain your elitism. look, race wasn't regarded then the way it is now. i know, it's difficult for you to comprehend. but, there were many blacks who attained high levels in society. there were black mayors of towns, YES, during colonial days, there were black generals, even in europe, there were black generals and leaders. even in ancient rome there was a black empreror (they called them dictators), even a black pope(not the conspiracy theory one of today). people respected inteligence. look at one of the first sea captains to ever come to the american shores(colombus did not) he was black, and he became one of the first from the old world, white or black, to make it to the interior to the west coast of the american continent.
READING IS FUNDAMENTAL! lol.- Frnnkdlxx, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1The f*ck is a holocaust?

- Frnnkdlxx, on 05/09/2008, -4/+1none of what any of you said is true. first off, free blacks didn't have to blend into society, ebcause they were more intelligent, successful and had plenty of workers and slaves to defend themselves in the early days. most ppl don't know that free blacks were here before the pilgrims landed and began purchasing slaves after the pilgrims recieved their first "orders of slaves". Also, indentured servants were much different than the slaves, who were mainly irish, and who were beaten, murdered, and were kidnapped or forced over into america because of their criminal background or simply because they were worthless "*****" as the word ***** is originally intended for the irish. my friends, i provided sources about the difference between indentured servitude and slavery to the right panel. please review it.
- Frnnkdlxx, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1who buried me? i want to debate you. because I happen to have the facts and articles and documents. i'm sick of americans running away from the truth. just like 9/11, we know it was carried out by members within our own government. stop pretending that the evidence isn't in! 2 planes can't knock down 3 buildings!
- whoreable, on 05/10/2008, -1/+9Actually the N word comes from the Spanish word negra, which means black. It has nothing to do with Irish people. And why are you talking about 9/11 in a race thread?
- Frnnkdlxx, on 05/10/2008, -2/+1No, it comes from Nagara. A term referring to the spanish moors which traveled up to england and transformed to *****, used to slander the irish, who were believed to have arab/moorish blood.

And then go wikitionary this: don't debate master. you may get spanked. as I just did you
- whoreable, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1Latin adjective word niger (pronounced "knee-ger" ), meaning "black" - From wiki
The latin language was using this word hundreds of years before the moors were around ( about 900 BC ). It is not up for debate. It is a fact. You are black. You should know this. - Frnnkdlxx, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1You're trippin' son. Yo yo yo. Check 'dis OOUTT. In England, it matters not where the words roots hail from, the fact that the general population called the Irish ***** as the derogatory term for the Spanish Moors who were "dark" or "black" but really arab, is simple to deduce. not only that, but hell, i don't care what wiki says. look at the term Human being. it originally means monster, inhuman, unnatural creature/beast. But today, it means ... us? lol. so words change from place to place. NEXT!
- whoreable, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1Human meant monster? I see you are going to keep making stuff up. It is pointless trying to talk sense into you.
- Frnnkdlxx, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1lol. you need to learn how to investigate. And it was the full term of "human being" meant "monster, beast". but thanks for shutting up.

- Frnnkdlxx, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Did I say that? please reread my statement. I said we are created equal in our infinite ability to learn anything. just as a dog can learn a "word" a monkey can learn a "pattern" any human can learn anything. how to ride a plane, how to work in the office, how to do anything. the difference is how quickly or slowly we adapt or learn.

I saw this a similar documentary a while back, it is truly something we need to pay attention though, most do not. As I am of a small group of people placed by realty companies to begin the gentrification process of this area, many residents do not appreciate my presents (understandably) I am starred at constantly, the target of remarks, and of verbal assault. It is sad and crucial to note that the most racist remarks come from the young ones here. "White piece of *****" etc. Racist mind sets are the result of ignorance and have a massive effect on our society. I hope some people catch this vid on digg who, like the majority on American's are completely clueless as to the full extent of race problems.

- rezist, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2It's NYC... there are many examples of race based tensions in this city. The fact that property owners continue to gentrify poor areas isn't racism... using discriminatory words is. The issue is more complex and deeply rooted than I think most realize. Do you think that the property owners and realty companies (many of which are Jewish in this area) use "pc" words to describe the 70% Haitian immigrant population that they are trying to push further east to increase rent here? I doubt it. Racism is characterized in many ways, it can be hidden but you can usually pick up on it based on subtleties such as screaming "White piece of *****" and throwing a rock at someone walking in the park with his GF. We clump everyone into groups instead of judging individuals! My main point is that as an adult I have a very diverse circle of friends and aquaintances and I owe it to the fact that as I grew up I saw that there was simply good people and bad people and color has nothing to do with it. For every idiot out there that is calling you names there is someone else out there who would like to extend there hand in friendship. I have faith in our younger generations!! - rezist, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1I appreciate your response. I too had a diverse group of friends and family growing up, and still do now. I am lucky enough to have experienced intimately many different races and the cultures that they keep. I have been in some pretty extreme circumstances living in NY state. As a young kid I was one of only a few white kids in my middle school, while moving to a suburban area for high school were most people were openly racist. Moving back to the city for college, then ultimately ending up in NYC for work/film school. There are many people who do not have the luxury of having a culturally diverse lifestyle, and some simply do not want one. These are the people who perpetuate and amplify the racial problems. These people exist in every color, and in any socio-economic class. The only way to break the chain is to step out of line and make a positive effort to understand people who are different from you.
- signalwarfare, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1"The fact that property owners continue to gentrify poor areas isn't racism... using discriminatory words is."
Judging by what you just said I think those guys throwing rocks at you had the right idea, but I'll try anyway to explain to you why gentrification is in fact racist. Gentrification is not ok, don't you understand that while you force them out of their homes and neighborhoods and enjoy your "new" crime-free neighborhood that nothing has actually changed for the people who used to live there? They just move to another low income neighborhood with the same crime and same problems. You actually say that property owners gentrifying poor areas is not racist, then go on to say that they don't use PC words to describe the current tenants, the reason for them not using those PC words is because they do not like the people who live on their property based on the color of their skin. In case you still don't get it, rich Jewish property owners are in essence evicting people from their property under the guise of gentrification because of the color of their skin. THAT IS RACISM.- rezist, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2you don't get me... that is my point, exactly what you typed. Listen i never said that gentrification wasn't racist... You don't think I know that my jewish landlord hates black people? Gentrification at this point in time in my area is based on race, gentrification in this area a 100 years ago was based on other factors. Brooklyn and many other cities have continued to evolve and come full circle many times over. You are simply skating the surface of a word game the needs to be exposed. Gentrification of this area is in practice to remove individuals who are paying lower rents than the market would allow. The group of people being displaced in this specific case is Haitian/Jamaican immigrants (largely) the reasons this group is unable to pay the higher rents are varied, many of which stem from racism in america. I believe that a portion of black americans and black immigrants here in america are faced with many disadvantages all of which need to be addressed. I have worked hard to improve race relations for the last 5 or so years of my life, and will continue to do so. I of course realize gentrification isn't ok, but we need to tackle the issues that have repeat themselves within all societies. Why are some areas high crime, why do the schools suck, why do kids die everyday, why are a disproportionate number of black males imprisoned, why is there an open war going on right now between the NYPD and gangs? These questions I assume we would both answer in similar fashions. Why bother asking children which race is prettier and ask male black teens why they have a high school dropout rate of 75 percent? If blacks attend the same schools as white children and are given the same educational opportunities as whites, why do they struggle so much? Why is the average US black's median household income $18,000 less than whites and $25,000 less than an Asians median household income?
Maybe the issue is black society? It is black society teaching their children these values.

- ZenMojo, on 05/09/2008, -7/+7Blacks don't attend the same schools as whites. They don't even live in the same neighborhoods. Ever heard of a term called "white flight?"
- nhavar, on 05/09/2008, -2/+0We are more than just "black" or "white", we are more than just categories. We are people of action and substance and need to look beyond superficialities and our genetic wiring to see the importance of this substance.
There's more to white flight than racism. For instance you might have a "white" neighborhood built in the 50's or 60's. In many cases the homes are owned by the original owners or close family of the original owners. As those people age and die, move into nursing homes, or move in with family they may sell a house at a lower price than market for quick liquidity. This may put the house within the price range of someone with lower income than the norm for the area. This may mean (but not always) that an African American family moves in looking for a house in their price range with good schools and low crime just like white people look when they move. As the area gentrifies and more houses are sold below market, those market conscious people start looking at how they can protect their investment. Meanwhile the new homeowners start recommending the area to their friends and family, further building the community toward diversity.
Another factor in this is that new people coming in at a lower economic level may not feel like they fit in. This causes them to avoid reaching out to neighbors and creates a self-segregation. I've seen this in my own neighborhood a couple of times. New neighbors taking over a long established household seem distant and offish. They refuse repeated attempts to be engaged and then neighbors are put off from making any further effort. That negative rapport remains as more new people enter the community, displacing friends and loved ones in the process. As that continues people feel less comfortable and look for ways to regain that sense of belonging. This may mean moving closer to family or friends who have since moved on. In turn this promotes the concept of "white flight". It's a natural progression of community and cyclical in nature.
Yes, blacks DO attend the same schools as whites. While it might be more unbalanced in some cities and neighborhoods than others, the school my children attend has representatives from 44 different countries attending. We live across the street from a South African family and caddy-corner to an African-American family and directly next door to a Vietnamese family and two houses down from a Saudi family on one side and a Mexican-American family on the other side. Then there are the Irish, Germans, Russians, Indians, Inuit, Scotts, Brits, and general white trash to talk with around here.- Robthefrog, on 05/09/2008, -1/+0I didn't read your bloat. - mewho, on 05/09/2008, -1/+6Basically, unless there is a language barrier, children of all races complete 1st being able to achieve the same things. After that, black and Hispanic children fall progressively behind for every year they attend school. For children home schooled or attending charter schools, this gap doesn't happen. http://www.naaha.com/homeschoolingbenefits.htm gives a simple breakdown of this study.
- leahcim, on 05/09/2008, -0/+17Yes, there are problems in the black community that cannot all be blamed on the white man. Some problems can, some can't, blame doesn't really solve the problem though.
From 1976 to 2005 --
* 86% of white victims were killed by whites
* 94% of black victims were killed by blacks
Homicide Type by Race, 1976-2005
Victims Offenders
White Black Other White Black Other
All homicides 50.9% 46.9% 2.1% 45.8% 52.2% 2.0%
Furthermore, 93% of the murders committed by blacks were males from ages 18-35, which constitute roughly 4% of the population. That equals out to half of all the murders in the United States since 1976 were commited by 4% of the population, and most of them were done to their own race.
The statistics page further showed that it was many times more likely that blacks would kill a white person than whites would kill a black person.
So we can "blame the media" for this, but that does not change anything. There are a myriad of reasons why these statistics are what they are, however they should not be ignored or blamed away, they should be dealt with, and preferably from within the community. - Alphabet, on 05/09/2008, -0/+13bobmyvilla, there's a book called freakonomics that addresses that question. It's damn interesting and you should read it. But basically, it comes down to bad school and bad neighborhood. White kids who go to the same bad school and live in the same bad neighborhood have the same drop out rates and low test score. The problem is that more blacks tend to live in such environments than whites. The second problem is that once you're in that environment, it's difficult to get out. For example, if you have bad test grades, it's unlikely you'll go to college and get a good paying job.
And so a cycle appears. Bad test grades, no good paying job, and so they're stuck there. They then marry, and then have kids. Their kids then follow the same path. And the kid's kids follow the same path. Repeat. - ghostoftomjoad, on 05/09/2008, -7/+2These are not sounds facts. In cases where kids think that their answer will be judged they look for nonverbal feedback to guide their choices. If the researchers asked the question and immediately looked at a particular doll, it could significantly effect the child's choice. Likewise, if the researcher smiles or gives the slightest of positive feedback after the child choice, it will effect future choices.
This is heartbreaking, but I'd like to see a full video demonstrating that the researchers weren't effecting the outcome.- o2bmoody, on 05/09/2008, -3/+3I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if these results are correct if they were found in a controlled environment ( with us living in a whitecentric, if not outright racist, society). But i found myself asking the same questions. How many kids did they ask these questions to and what percentage answered this way?... Not to mention the color of the questioner. What i mean is this: if a child is asked which doll is prettier by a white adult wouldn't they be more likely to say the white doll? Having said all of that I have a sneaking suspicion that this situation is exactly as it seems on the surface. I believe we're living in a world in which black children are picking up on the racist undertones of our society while, at the same time, our older, more jaded minds either intentionally or subconsciously ignore it.

I know, I want to deny it too - imagine how a kid grows up when that is the impression they have of their self, even if they stopped saying it out loud and thinking it consciously, that thought would always be their.
Heartbreaking. - JimbobtheSalesm, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1In this case the research was done by High School kids so I don't think they really thought about all that.
- o2bmoody, on 05/09/2008, -3/+3I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if these results are correct if they were found in a controlled environment ( with us living in a whitecentric, if not outright racist, society).
- siszam, on 05/09/2008, -32/+9That is such bull. My god children are black and they don't have skewed misconceptions like that at all. If those children really think that way then their parents are to blame.
- Menace1, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Hate to burst your bubble, but this is not a new test. And sadly we're still seeing the same answer from these kids. Check out the film Seperate but Equal, based on a true story in the 60's if I remember correctly and even in that film they ran that exact same test, same questions, same answers. For once it's not the parents, it's society. I could go on about the media and it's effects on racial perceptions in the masses but that would take quite a while to go over.
- agimat, on 05/09/2008, -4/+4Dugg down for your varying opinion.
/sarc - blackinthmiddle, on 05/09/2008, -0/+8You couldn't be more wrong. I have two beautiful black daughters who constantly get complimented on their beauty from my wife and I. Also, they're told how beautiful they are everywhere they go. And since we live in the suburbs of NY, it's mostly white people doing the complimenting. This still didn't stop my eldest daughter from coming home one day and telling us she wished she were white so that she were pretty!
I think Menace1 has it right. The media has an *incredibly* strong influence on everyone. It's the reason women continue to hack their bodies and get breast implants, tans, liposuction, botox, eye lid surgery you name it.
My good friend and I were just talking about this the other day. I'm sure you've heard of the movie that's out now called "21", where a bunch of MIT kids count cards and make a fortune doing so. Well did you know that in real life, all of the kids where Asian, sans one white girl? The fact that a decision was made to change the cast to an all white cast (except for one Asian) reinforces a powerful message. - Jexie, on 05/09/2008, -3/+3Oh ok, your single anecdote must mean all other evidence is wrong - fantastic logic there. Quit your day job I have a position for you in the philosophy dept.
- samoan27, on 05/09/2008, -28/+24It's called evolution, in all ancient societies lighter skin was seen as preferable be it Asian, African, or European. Darkness in facial features causes distrust and other negative feelings in humans, it's not racism it's wiring (the same results can be had if the dolls were placed in light and dim lighting).
- Mikhail101, on 05/09/2008, -10/+7yea thats true i remeber some time back people get repulsed by certain colours, like white spots on pink or yellow slime over a blue slime which mimic disease and sickness, its only a human self defense mechanism.
- pintomp3, on 05/09/2008, -10/+15no, that's the effects of colonialism. the british, french, and spanish "discovered" many places around the world and ruled for centuries. natives who were either lighter or mixed blood often had favorable positions under their colonial masters. another factor is that if you were dark from the sun, you probably were working in the field and lower on the social scale. what biological reasoning could there be behind distrusting darkness? your explanation makes no sense for the chinise and japanese, they are already very light. the almond eyes preference is a very recent trend.
- Rikm, on 05/09/2008, -0/+8In Chinese and Japanese societies paler skin is considered much more beautiful. Women here walk around in the summer in long sleeves even though its hot, and carry umbrellas around to shade themselves from the sun. Cosmetics shelves are lined with whitening creams, just like those in the US and UK are lined with tanning lotions etc.
Chinese and Japanese will openly talk down about other Asian populations such as Thai, Filipino, aboriginal etc., particularly in terms of "those people" having dark skin. This has nothing to do with colonialism (at least not western colonialism, remember while the Greeks, Romans, Vikings, British were having their way around Europe and then other parts of the world, the great Chinese Empires were doing their fair share of raeping and pillaging too.) - jozb, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Same thing in India too, paler skin is considered to be more beautiful. As you can see from these ads they run on indian television, many people are brainwashed into thinking white is better.

- ladygator, on 05/09/2008, -7/+7Agreed with you completely. It seems disconcerting because of all the racial stigma in our society and in our global past, but that has everything to do with the stupidity of our ancestors and more than likely nothing to do with these children's upbringings. I'm no certified anthropologist or psychologist, but I am at least taking anthropology courses and this is one of the first things we're taught in every class regarding race and culture and its evolutionary ties. In almost every society, with the exception of a rare few, light features seem to translate to purity and integrity whereas dark features seem to translate to deceit. It's just how the human mind interprets visual cues. I agree that it's horrible to see these children come to realize that they resemble the doll that they rejected, but give them a few years (when human instinct is shaped by experience and societal awareness) and I'm sure they'll be thinking differently.
- ladygator, on 05/09/2008, -1/+0Actually. Not agreed entirely. It's not apparent in every society. Damn. The nature versus "nurture" thing can go on forever.
- gryphon50, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1in cultures where you have a history of an invading white race, such as Central & South America (the Spanish over the natives), or India (the ancient Aryans over the native Dravidians), you have this notion that white is superior, but that is hardly "hard-wiring" or evolution. It's just a result of the white race invading and setting themselves up as social superiors.
- ladygator, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1True, colonialism had a major impact on society's perception of white "superiority", BUT, it is also regarded as an evolutionary trait in european and east asian societies as for these races (traditionally...and I'm talking when groups of our earliest ancestors migrated north and pigment naturally changed) viewed fairer features as advantageous for survival, and later spread both their ideology and genetics as they dispersed throughout the globe. That in-and-of-itself is an evolutionary example of natural racism seen early in our species past and it boils down to issues of natural selection, gene selection, and intrinsic perceptions of beauty. I've listed a few separate links amongst the comments but it's all pretty well documented. Each race has their own unique idea of what is considered beautiful (as it really is all about gene selection and predominately about a natural need for homogeneity in our early years on this planet), but this hard-wiring obviously varies from region to region and consequently, race to race. Considering that our earliest ancestors moved out of Africa (check the "out of Africa" anthropological theory), and populated the european and eastern terrain at an extremely rapid speed, the notion that light features were advantageous WAS a predominant mindset amongst our earliest ancestors. The invasions that you speak of obviously stripped the already established societies of their ideals for beauty and of superiority, but you are forgetting that even in these ancient societies (at least in Central American early tribe societies), some of their gods had white-skin (uncommon to the populace's skin color) and studies show that a large portion of their male and female sacrifices (those sent as gifts to the gods because of their perceived "beauty" and killed in honor), had lighter skin as well. I don't know anything about the Indian culture prior to colonialism so who knows if it's evidenced in that society as well. I highly doubt every class I've taken is wrong on the matter. It kind of always creates a social stigma and widespread feeling of disbelief in my classes as well- especially amongst those who don't even believe in evolution! -but it's something that I at least view as credible because it's so well documented in the anthropological texts and research. It's evolutionary mindsets altered and made corrupt by historical, societal events.
- ZenMojo, on 05/09/2008, -5/+6Thanks for providing such an enlightening load of ***** and nonsense for us to consider.
- ladygator, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1http://www.apa.org/science/psa/maddox.html
It goes beyond the slavery in the U.S. and though I'm not saying it's purely evolutionary now-a-days (because it sure as hell isn't beyond a certain age!), it's turned from an eastern european instinct that's spread worldwide (yes, still racist, but still an evolutionary mindset) to a social issue dealing more about economics than anything else. I'm just going by what I've been taught and whether or not it's *****, neither of us are really the wiser.

- kurejibitch, on 05/09/2008, -3/+5This is exactly the kind f ***** that gives socio-biology its intense controversy -- one that is, proven by this gentleman's fine, fine ignorant and baseless words -- necessary to the race of humans who will still use its development and its information as a way to breed and excuse blatant racism. Go read a goddamn book, and stop thinking that just because good characters are white coloured and bad characters are black coloured in video games means this translates to and excuses such deplorable behaviour.
- aschocobo, on 05/09/2008, -2/+8show me an ancient sub saharan african society that preferred light skin over dark
- chrgrose, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5Skin color is almost always a result of environment. White europeans probably whitened due to the the great climate difference from their african origin. Africans are black because light skin is much easier to damage by the sun. It is likely that medium tones are statistically the most attractive since facial features are clearer to distinguish and dark enough to appear natural and healthy (or whatever). Other sexual selection factors and even cultural idealism factors also are powerful drivers of such changes (probably in both directions white and dark).
Anyways, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and people who think "black is beautiful" or "white is beautiful" or any of that ***** as if it had logical necessity are only throwing in their share of idealistic corruption to the future of mankind. - ladygator, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2Yep. (e.g. http://evoandproud.blogspot.com/2006/12/skin-color ...
- aschocobo, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1that is a blog, and even then it leads to nothing.

- Aitese, on 05/09/2008, -4/+8What a total croc of utter *****! You wrote that out ACTUALLY believing it didn't you? Now go back and read of the multicolored rulers of Egypt...go back and read of the BLACK emperor that oversaw the Roman rule in Britain. The whole Dark skin, light skin thing began with BRITISH colonialism and Spanish backlash against their Moor conquerers. Read a book you moron.
- artBitch, on 05/09/2008, -1/+4That doesn't explain why people spend ridiculous amounts of money on tanning salons. Dark skin is sexy.
- corneliusJones, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3It's sexual selection. People are attracted to features that display some sort of advantage. In the past, being pale meant you did not work outside like a peasant. Instead you were able to stay inside with a better job. As for tanning now, it displays extra time and effort that one is able to expend at a tanning salon/ out in the sun. This leisure time indicator tells others you are doing pretty well in life.
- pablo0713, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1Or just some dumb bitch living off the income of an equally dumb male....
- MutatedNantuko, on 05/09/2008, -4/+38If it would have turned out differently people would have been equally disturbed. This whole test is a catch-22.
- Murdats, on 05/09/2008, -1/+5I think the point is the consistency (that is shown, but it is all cut up), if they showed varied results it would have no effect.
- dazparkour, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1Why are people digging you up?
They didn't screw with the results in the editing of the video - this is a very old experiment that has been repeated plenty of times showing the exact same results, no smoke and mirrors.

- Mikhail101, on 05/09/2008, -6/+5go back to WoW big idiot.
- dvsbastard, on 05/09/2008, -5/+74What could have the children possibly answered to prevent this from being "heartbreaking"?!
- Sieker, on 05/09/2008, -1/+36"Hmm... the pretty doll? let me see which one has the more symmetrical features... you don't have a tape measure and set of calipers handy, do ya?"
- DarkoKun, on 05/09/2008, -2/+17That would of been so cute!
- Aitese, on 05/09/2008, -3/+6I'm sure if I asked you to describe your ideal mate (I'm assuming you're a white male here...I may be wrong) most every white male I've ever spoken to starts to describe all the hottest white Hollywood starlets and mixing and matching their features together. Most of the black guys I know have always done the same...but with black female celebrities. Normality is having a bias towards your own...no one says thats racism, it's a natural fact of life. I'm more attracted to Beyonce than I am Scarlet Johansen...I'm still a guy though and I'm still attracted to Scarlet...just not as much.
- Numbski, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Y'know, I've always wondered why it is considered racist to be more attracted to your own skin color than another, or vice-versa. I know it's such a simplistic thing - but sheesh. It doesn't matter *that* much. Heck, I've seen a whole lot of ugly, "pretty" people - they have horrid personalities and attitudes, but they're dolled up just right, and lots of really pretty "ugly" people. The wonderful thing about this world - you can fix up appearances pretty well on just about anything. It's much harder to fix an attitude. Skin color - pfft. I have two words for you: Michael. Jackson. Skin color doesn't matter, for a ton of reasons.
- SkullPizza, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2either having a bias towards your own or just having more of an even split where some go one way and some go another.
- KireGoTI, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1I think they should prefer the doll that looks more like them. It's a sign of higher self esteem, yes?

Maybe try "Do you see a bad doll" "Do you like this doll, what about this one""

- zspeed78, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2You make a valid point.. there is no good way to answer the some of the negative questions.. I too have seen the a few versions of this in psych classes before.. wouldnt hurt to make a new one with some changes just to see..
