- dudley3d, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25Now THAT'S impressive!
- wdunay3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22Parallels has been doing this since the last major release (Build 3188, March 7, 2007) with their coherence feature. VMWare Fusion even has the same bug as Parallels. When you watch the video, you'll notice that when MS Outlook is minimized you see the windows turn into the Desktop Wallpaper in Windows for a sec. Same thing happens in Parallels.
In Parallels, if you move a around you can see an "after shadow" of the Windows desktop background.
I'm not saying it's not cool. Just VMWare is not the first to do it. - Mejogid, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22Save your money by spending more of it? Good to see a Windows fanboy's logic at work.

- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12VERY impressive!
i hope vmware plans to do this for linux as well! it looks seemless on mac - adude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9The competition between Parallels and VMware is making for amazing updates at amazing speeds... Parallels was the first to hit the market with Coherence, but looks like VMware has refined it more. It's great that neither one is dominant in the market.
- opieum, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Looks great. Looking forward to it. What's the status on 3D?
- le0pard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Yeah it is, I'm no mac fan by any means, but this is really cool none-the-less.
- OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9VMWare Fusion 4 Linux plz????? :(
- ApolloXLII, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10i think i just came a little. i want. now.
- stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8DirectX 8.1 is supported in the latest version, or so I hear.
I can't wait for this version to come out, looks awesome. Now I just hope they implement OpenGL in virtualized Linux. - nleck, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8WOW... looks like I'll be buying a mac
- santaliqueur, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8This is how Windows virtualization is done. I hope Parallels is taking notes.

Why do you dedicate so much time to attacking Apple products and everything related to Apple? Did an apple user turn you down when you asked him to the prom or something? - Mejogid, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7If we can get Open GL with propper driversin Linux guest with Unity I will perrsonally have VMWare's babies :). Anyone got information on a release date for the next beta?
It's amazing how far VMWare's come in a few short months - they're quickly becoming one of my favourite software manufactures and they're Linux support (guest and host) quite frankly blows that of Parallels out the water. - affanjam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6My jaw just dropped...
- opieum, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I am guessing overall VMware will be more stable. Considering that Parallels proxies ALL network traffic through its interface and basically borks my host network connection, I prefer the VMware way of doing things. They did not rush to get this out. It is obvious they are working on stabilty of code. Plus for the complainers VMware was 3 years ahead on 3D support. It is in all the desktop based products, it is just poorly documented is all. So yes while Parallels used Coherence first, Vmware had 3D support first. So while people are saying that VMware is late to the game, I say that is fine.
Sometimes being first is not always the best thing. Look at Sega. They came out with consoles first, They were good solid and great tech. Then they got beat by the competitors who came out later. This is just one example. The fact that VMware has a reputation for building stable products means more to me than getting the one that ships first. I prefer stability, 3D, and Unity all in that order. My Mac Book Pro crashes at least once a day while I am using Parallels. Given that Fusion is in Beta I see some crashes there too, BUT They are far and few between, And then it is only the app that fails not my whole system unlike Parallels, which can bring down my netework or kernel panic my system.
Also the hardware support is better. SMP, 64Bit support, USB support is far more advanced. Unity is icing on the cake for me. 3D also is a big deal if I can get some of my games running. - fooka, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7VirtualMessiahWare?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Wow, finally I can get some games and useful applications on my Mac. The best of both worlds.
- cleverboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Hope they take notes, but you have to note yourself that their Parellels coherence-mode started people talking about this methodology for merged desktops. VMWare has apparently raised the stakes however.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7if it works on linux ill cream mine too
- jivemasta, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5If I could afford a mac, I would totally switch because of this.
- EndangeredMassa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Will there be something like VMWare Fusion available for a Windows-based host system? I'm really just looking for better 3D support with windows-based host Virtual Machine solutions.
- mbabauer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Speed is sometimes important as well. I don't use Windows often enough to warrant heavy use. Since Parallels was first, thats who got my money. This gives me $80 worth of investment that I don't want to see wasted. If VMWare were out, and offered to switch me over for $39, which is the price of the Parallels 3.0 upgrade, then I would consider switching, but I am not about to shell out yet another $80 for something I use maybe once a week at best. As far as I can tell, they haven't even released a price yet.
- metamatt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3With Unity in Fusion, you can use Expose to select between all windows the way Expose is supposed to work, and you can bring one Windows window to the front without bringing them all to the front. I don't believe either of those things work in Parallel's way of doing it.
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Hmmmm...ok, I'll hold off on the Parallels 3.0 upgrade until I see more. ($10 discount offer ends this week :( )
- mccarron, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Well you do have a 30 day money back guarantee on it if you buy this week.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I wonder what Citrix thinks of this?
- longbow486, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3GOD DAMN i love Vmware (drools)
- lemz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Okay, my pants are blown away.
- brainphreak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2this is the most amazing transparent virtualization I have seen to date! Cant wait to get this baby on my laptop! Windows makes me madd...
- Vanden, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Windows apps show up in the dock with Parallels aswell.
- djgraphite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The minimize thing, I believe is a "bug" in windows due to the way the minimization and window updates are sent.
- Bartboy919, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Here is hoping that it will even support DirectX 9, so far they only have 8.1
- smartsingh24, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2correct me if i'm wrong, but won't parallels 3.0 have directx 9? the screencaps in the preview had quake 4 running
- whistlerpro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Parallels coherance didn't work for Linux, so I'm not sure if VMWare's unity will.
- ohnnyj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I didn't see any computer specs. What was this running on?
I have to admit that really like Parallels but you really do need quite a bit of RAM and CPU in order to run smoothly (while having multiple windows open in both OSes). - treed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yes.
- GruffPelt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Damn, I love competition!
- eliezerlp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@info...
Yes, shows the start menu and bottom taskbar. Does pretty much all this , albeit buggy at times.
EDIT: a few other ppl beat me to it I see... - CoppellStereo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i want a mac now so i can have a pc
- mal1964, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1that's way cool. a must have unless it disrupts the solitaire game.that's the only deal breaker
- djgraphite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@steevo from my understanding, Fusion is going to have better windows (z-ordering/expose, etc) in Unity. But, Parallels is going to have better integration of applications and shared files across the VM host border. This includes things like drag and drop, cross VM file/protocol handlers, etc. (like clicking on a link in Windows and it opening safari). However, I believe some of this relaxes the sandbox environment that is important to security.
Coherence is moving forward, but Unity just came out. Competition is good. I'll be sticking with Fusion, mostly because of stability and slightly because I trust VMware that they will protect my host from the guest. - halohunter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Why cant they do this for linux????? The Mac OSX core is not that different to linux.
- steevo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Parallels and VMware are not owned by the same company, VMware is owned by EMC and Parallels is owned by SWsoft
djgraphite beat me to the punch
I think the new Parallels version is supposed to have better integrated coherence, i hope it works the same way as unity does for intergration - djgraphite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What are you talking about?! VMware is owned by EMC. Parallels by SWSoft. hmm?
- VeritasAequitas, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4I use VMWare Fusion everyday at work and love it! on a side note there are a lot of people using parallels that I support and I also have parallels on my machine. Haven't loaded it in months. And I hate dealing with my clients parallels issues!
VMware FTW! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2that would be Tank! :)
- chefox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1In fact, I would not be surprised if clicking a docked Windows app when the machine wasn't started booted up the machine and opened the app.
