- Firemeboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+184Everybody who graduated from that school just threw their degrees in the trash can.
- zeldafan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+136""We would never create something like that to attract students," says Dr. Lorin Baumhover Chief of Staff for the Office of the Chancellor at Appalachian State. "It's horrible." Baumhover maintains the video was created as a kind of joke, to be shared with alumni and friends of the university. He says about a year ago, someone posted it on the Web, and they've been getting queries ever since. "I wish someone could put a stake through it," says Baumhover."
says a youtube user.
Make of it what you will, I think they're in denial. - Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -1/+79They must of been smoking POT POT POT when making that video.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+80I think they are awesome. They actually built a time machine and went back to the '80s just to make this film. It must have costed them millions.
- Jadinlee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+47Unfortunately, its no joke like they want you to believe. I actually didn't find this very funny at all because I've seen many more like it from tons of universities. Shows you how out of touch university administrators are with younger generations. Hey, they try and we gotta give 'em credit for that but... its a great example of how quality counts when it comes to marketing.
- jwjedi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+45"Even when it's Cold, Cold, Cold! Appalachian is Hot! Hot! Hot!"
Lyrical brilliance.
Eat your heart out John Lennon. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -11/+54Everybody's thinking it, but I'm gonna say it:
What the hell did you expect from a university from Appalachia?! - thomasthecat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+43Thank God they had the lyrics at the bottom of the screen, I was worried I wouldn't be able to sing along.
- atsidor, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43Worst song ever recorded?
I thought it was HOT HOT HOT! - climbon321, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38Here's Ithaca College's response to that

And keep in mind, we're most know for being a communications college. - bsdsolomon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36I went to ASU (just graduated), and I distinctly remember the school sending me a CD that had this on it.
- jmack, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38old news.. EVERYONE knows Appalachian is HOT HOT HOT
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35Awesome. I just applied.
- bashar129, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34So how does it feel to have your College's credibility go down the drain by a 2 minute video?
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+35I'm so HOT! HOT! HOT! So come and let me show you what I've got...
- meshgiath, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35i think I just threw up a little
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27appalachian state is hot hot hot.. but all the women in the video are not not not....
- jessssse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24i liked how as soon as the soul singer started singing, they showed a picture of a black guy.
- bugsy187, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24"This is basically a cheap viral marketing tactic - they made this video and allowed it to 'leak' on to the net as a 'OMG look how bad it is' meme.
Then they deny that it was the official video which redeems them because apart from the crappy video the actual photos were pretty decent and it looked like it had some good stuff
Now people who have never heard of the uni might consider it - as long as they make it clear that they 'didn't make the video'. I guess at least its an original expansion of the viral marketing concept, I reckon we'll see quite a few others of this type in the future.
It can only really be done by smaller companies and organisations of course, it obviously wouldn't work for any big established company with a history of decent adverts."
@ theoallardyce
Dude, no. You can't fake this level of incompetence. It's so bad because someone tried so hard to make it good. It's not intentionally a viral marketing campaign. Here's an intentionally bad viral marketing campaign, one done by a major company (Folgers):

Here's another one by Philips:

- gwenli, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20The flaming letters were the icing on the cake...
- paulwilde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Must be a music university.
- amk29j, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Funny you should say that. App State is known for it's pot usage in NC. Haha
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19MUST... ATTEND...APPALACHIAN... STATE....
- johnnyrotten, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19My mother, who worked at ASU and graduated from there, is spinning in her grave... er, or doing whatever cremated people do...
- Darkhacker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I bet this is where Tom Peters went to school. I hope I'm not the only one that thought of Tom Goes To The Mayor when watching this. I can totally see them doing a spoof like this.
- randersontt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Hideous! Are any of their faculty under 70 years old?
- gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Wow, NSFW ... very hot hot hot
- biometricks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12You're all wrong. It's pronounced HOT-HOT-HOT.
- ZigZags, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Anybody know if these jingle singers have an album and also where can I immediately pick one up? I'm going to be the new president of their fan club. This ranks right up there with the mentos commercials on the cheesemeter.
- matt428, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I already have 2 degrees, but somehow I now want more.... I want to "speak the language of a new year"
- TheCookieMaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10that is the proper pronunciation
- raindogmx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I'm caught between "Loyal alumni, we've got a lot!" and "Solid as a rock and proud as a peacock".
Too bad this wasn't out when I was looking for a university.
..."proud as a peacock" - DasPope, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13warn the ria im ripping this to my mp3 player!

- bongo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9*Ahem* "Solid as a rock, proud as a peacock, Appalachian is HOT HOT HOT". Sorry, this is definitely worse.
- johanm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8http://www.appstate.edu/
they have a not so ugly website though
I mean as far as college websites go, I've seen way worse - theoallardyce, on 10/12/2007, -15/+20This is basically a cheap viral marketing tactic - they made this video and allowed it to 'leak' on to the net as a 'OMG look how bad it is' meme.

It can only really be done by smaller companies and organisations of course, it obviously wouldn't work for any big established company with a history of decent adverts. - aplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I'm applying tomorrow.
- joannelj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7When in Rome, do as the Romans. In that area of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is pronounced ap-pa-latch-ian. I live in the town where the university is located, and everyone here pronounces it that way. Although it is a lame video, they aren't so stupid they would screw up their own name.
- Quickbreak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8You forgot the ™ symbol.
- thesparrowband, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i got embarrassed just watching
- glafira, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Thats some pretty ***** up ***** right there. Reminds me of Church camp.

No no you dont understand, the Folgers ad was bad in an ironic way - i.e the tag line was tollerate mornings in the same way that you would tollerate a cringe-making 70's musical number. The cheesiness was obviously intentional, although thats a very straight-forward set up in the advertising industry, every agency under the sun has used this idea by now.
This recruitment video was bad in an "ah we've all seen cheesy 80's company videos and this one goes on the pile of cheese" way but then it spins around on you because it turns out that the university denies that they ever made the video, so suddenly it becomes a complete non-story, there was no video, it was just a joke by some students, you no-longer cringe, but then that means the university might not be so bad after-all.
The catch is, it wasnt just a student prank, but the target audience isnt supposed to realise that - they are still on twist number 2, but at the same time will have had the name of the university etched into their minds for a few minutes - thats twist number 3 - Wilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Followup: NBC sues ASU for use of the phrase "Proud As A Peacock" :P
- jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Don't do that. ASU needs to retain as many students as possible. ;-)
