How to decide if a fan is friend-worthy on Digg
surferess.blogspot.com — The wonderful thing about Digg is that when you wake up in the morning you get a bunch of friend requests. I generally get around 30-50 per day, depending on what I did the day before. Obviously, you can ’t make everybody who asks a mutual friend. Some people are simply not friend-worthy yet.

- alapoet, on 06/10/2008, -20/+14Excellent advice! Very true.
- polychrome, on 06/10/2008, -2/+4How I wish I had read such great advice before I dove into Digg.
- manzplan, on 06/10/2008, -5/+45I am worthy.. but have deleted some who sent shout after shout and NEVER dugg one thing.
- leerayIG88, on 06/10/2008, -6/+2I disabled my shout because people just spam it.
10 years from now, I will have more friends than anyone here. My new life goal. - centran, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2That is the key right there... you can delete them.
I just add friends and if I don't like what they are shouting then they get axed.
- leerayIG88, on 06/10/2008, -6/+2I disabled my shout because people just spam it.
- v666, on 06/10/2008, -15/+9just forwarded it, I think the shout was good
- MacBookForMe, on 06/10/2008, -23/+18Surferess, you did a great job here, which is very well worth promoting! Thanks!
- Surferess, on 06/10/2008, -6/+3Thanks MacBook! I'd personally shout that thank you to you, but I used up all my darn shouts.
- NinjaJoey, on 06/10/2008, -2/+4This blog was created for the sole intention of writing this article? LAME
- inthedoghouse, on 06/10/2008, -18/+9This is a great article... Thanks for Digging it so that I could find it...Digg is great isn't it?
- MrHairy2005, on 06/10/2008, -20/+10Liked it, it definitely helped a beginner like me!
- RicardoWilliams, on 06/10/2008, -19/+6The title alone is worthy of recognition in the archives of the Jedi order.
- MrHairy2005, on 06/10/2008, -21/+6Liked it, it definitely helped a beginner like me!
- nobodaddy, on 06/10/2008, -18/+14Great advice, thanks for sharing. I appreciate that you believe it's best to friend experienced Digg users (1000 + Diggs), but I wonder if there isn't some value in friending folks who are less experienced? Everybody has got to to start somewhere!
- Michiko280, on 06/10/2008, -2/+10I agree... in fact the newer Digg users may be more likely to have a mutually beneficial relationship with you. They may not be inundated with shouts as many experienced diggers are.
- yellowcakewalk, on 06/10/2008, -21/+15Great job, Surfress. Thanks! It WOULD be a good idea for beginners to read this, as so many come on and the first thing they do is friend every single person they can find and other such mistakes.
- sungoddess808, on 06/10/2008, -4/+7It's nice to agree with you on something, Yellowcakewalk! I'm still a newbie and Surfress has offered outstanding advise. =)
- stephhicks68, on 06/10/2008, -18/+11I am learning quite a bit about Digg etiquette! Thank you for such an excellent article. I will Digg it in hopes that it rises quickly and more people learn the proper "ropes!"
- maing, on 06/10/2008, -13/+10interesting read but i disagree with tip #1,i'm from Italy and i have no problems speaking with US friends
- life38, on 06/10/2008, -13/+7One of the few areas not mentioned is how to let people know your away.
I was off line for two days with almost no access and had 43 pages to go thorough. What is folks advice?
The other question is how to do you get rid of fans who are not mutual friends?- drachemorder, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5I wish Digg would add that functionality. I get a lot of people who friend me who I'm pretty sure aren't interested in the sort of stuff I digg --- or are downright hostile, for that matter. I'd really like the option to block those people from friending me.
- Surferess, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5If you set your shouts to only receive shouts from friends, you are golden. Fan shouts do not come through to you, and you don't show up in their share window.
- granolajoe, on 06/10/2008, -13/+15I really appreciate this post. I try to be very selective when I add people to my list of friends, and I always look at the quality of their posts and the level of their activity. However, I think I've gotten careless here and there and added people who I really could get rid of. I can't stand users that love to shout repeatedly and reap the benefits of digs from people like myself, but who never bother to read their shouts and reciprocate.
- Michiko280, on 06/10/2008, -2/+8I completely agree
- RUTHDFW, on 06/10/2008, -12/+5Does Digg limit you to 100 shouts per "digg" I have over 200 friends but notice my shouts are always 100.
- scotq, on 06/10/2008, -13/+3This helps a bunch...
- greytfriend, on 06/10/2008, -11/+11A few comments. Most importantly, find people who have mutual interests with you. People are a lot more likely to digg, comment and shout your stuff if they enjoy it and you're more likely to be able to become real friends.
On people from foreign countries, I couldn't disagree more. I've seen such a wide variety of diggers from every location, for the 18 year old kid only interested in games to scientists and business execs, that making assumptions without looking at their profile would be a waste. Also, I'm up late at night a lot and enjoy having people to be awake with.
I couldn't agree more about multiple shouts. I always try to make sure, even when I'm shouting for a friend, to check who as already dugg the article so that I don't annoy or overwhelm my friends. It can be an effort, but I think it's worth it. Especially if you are someone who shouts a lot.
And comments - check their comments! Humor, rudeness, political views, all show in comments. - lucy22, on 06/10/2008, -15/+6Every digger should read this. Good article.
- nymphetamine, on 06/10/2008, -2/+42Zombie comments agree!
- ColonelTribune, on 06/10/2008, -16/+2Wow. Great first post on your blog, Surferess. And perfect Digg-bait!
Good job. - bicyclethief, on 06/10/2008, -10/+13Why do you hate Malaysians?
- Surferess, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7I love Malaysians. I just don't need any 17 year old boy friends from the other side of the world. I have a 17 year old son and have enough trouble talking to him. My point is find someone with similar values and interests.
By my bury recorder here, I see that some of my Malaysian fans (that were not mutual friended) were here and have tried to bury the story and all the comments. That must have taken some time. Gotta love the initiative there.- bicyclethief, on 06/10/2008, -2/+4Everyone needs 17 year old Malaysian boys in their life.
- Surferess, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7I love Malaysians. I just don't need any 17 year old boy friends from the other side of the world. I have a 17 year old son and have enough trouble talking to him. My point is find someone with similar values and interests.

- jcm267, on 06/10/2008, -16/+43You're mutual friends with people like yellowcakewalk, tynos, americangoy, and globalistshill and YOU are submitting blog posts about how to decide if someone is friend-worthy on digg? Buried as inaccurate. I'm sure that after I'm done reading your blog I'll want to bury it again.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall...who's the dumbest troll of all?
(Herkimer...but you are certainly trying your best. Don't sweat it.) - Herkimer56, on 06/11/2008, -2/+9Observant, keep posting that link. It confirms for everyone that you're a complete and total *****.
Brappie, being called stupid by someone who thinks that the government is out to kill him with moth hormones means absolutely nothing. It just goes to show who the real idiot is.
The problem that you two have with me and with jcm267 is that neither one of you is bright enough or knowledgeable enough to maintain a debate for ten seconds with either one of us. We, along with many others, have been bitch slapping you both around for months which is why you've both regressed to this childish name calling and idiotic comments. That's why both of you are on my ignore list and will remain there. You never add anything of interest or of value to any thread where you post.
Now begone, trolls. You're boring me. - BrapAllgood, on 06/11/2008, -8/+3Herk, you calling us trolls is the funniest part.
I have NEVER said the government was trying to kill me with moth hormones. YOU keep making that ***** up. People who lie to feel better about themselves are pretty stupid in my book, yes. You are a prime example of this, having lied about me more times than I can possibly count.
As for debate...you don't know how. Step off your little soapbox and join us 'human trash' on the ground if you wanna learn how. We can start with the simplicity of Newtonian physics and how buildings don't collapse into their own footprints like magic. Maybe then we can try the harder sciences.
I'm not holding my breath in anticipation. - Observant1, on 06/11/2008, -7/+2right on cue with the name calling, nice one herkimer, when people look to youre profile they can decide for themselves whats really what. I'm bright enough to know there is no such thing as a debate with you, to you it's all about you baiting others and name calling.
good job of ignoring youre doing there, ROFL. - jcm267, on 06/11/2008, -1/+8Quote from BrapAllgood:

- Hell, I recommend reading that entire thread. It's one of the most hilarious Brappie threads.
Now here are the articles that BrapAllgood has dugg that are related to this moth conspiracy theory:
http://digg.com/environment/State_defends_moth_spr ...
http://digg.com/environment/Moth_spraying_contract ...
http://digg.com/environment/Report_says_apple_moth ...

http://digg.com/environment/Moth_spraying_suspende ...
http://digg.com/health/State_report_says_apple_mot ...
http://digg.com/health/Checkmate_Killing_us_softly ...
From the last submission (which BrapAllgood submitted to digg) that I listed:
quote
In the mindset of the elite any crackpot, criminal and psychopathic idea is fair game to contemplate and apply in their Machiavellian worldview, including exposing civilians to biological and chemical weapons, as can be demonstrated countless times in U.S. history (see Humans Used as Guinea Pigs By US Government and Military). Recently Salon.com exposed an Army-run bioweapons exercise in Dead or Alive? in which the Army tried to cover-up the fact that they were using a live bacteria, bacillus subtilis, on unwitting civilians.
So, is it out of the question to ponder if this spraying campaign could have a more sinister agenda to it? After all, the American eugenics movement was funded by major American foundations, foundations that today are major supporters of population control programs. Can we rule out this possibility? ("Here is a good summary of an evil "whitewashed" out of our history books Eugenics and the Nazis -- the California connection)
...
So,this brings us back to that unsavory third hypothesis. Could the LBAM spray program just be a cover for some sinister eugenics or depopulation program? After all, why is the spraying slatted to happen in heavily populated urban areas? Cities to be sprayed this summer are San Francisco, Oakland, Emeryville, San Leandro, Tiberon, and other heavily-populated Bay Area communities -- communities that one would not in any stretch of the imagination be called agricultural lands (though one might call them unfriendly to our global overlords). Since these moths have a mobility range of 20 to 40 yards it is a patently absurd notion that they have to spray urban communities to protect agricultural crops.
/quote
So he admitted that he believes that the government is trying to kill him with moth pheromones in one thread, dugg a ton of stories about this, and submitted a story about this that includes several paragraphs (more than what I quoted) seriously pondering if the government is using the moth spray as part of "some sinister eugenics or depopulation program".
Brappie is delusional. He has apparently forgotten all about about something that he was obsessing with a few months ago. - BrapAllgood, on 06/11/2008, -8/+2"Quote from BrapAllgood:

You are a lying little *****. I *never* said that. I am so sick of your *****, child. Get a ***** life.
I am concerned about the effects that Checkmate may have on health, yes. The goddamn plane takes off from the airport here. YOUR only interest is in deriding me (and my wife) in the subject. You don't live here. We do. When you are willing to bring your pathetic little self out here and inhale some Checkmate, THEN you might have an opinion worthy of note.
Until then, QUIT THE LYING, punk.
"Brappie is delusional. He has apparently forgotten all about about something that he was obsessing with a few months ago. "
If I am delusional, then why has the spraying been halted here? Why did a judge ORDER it be halted? Is he delusional too? No, you are the delusional one. - BrapAllgood, on 06/12/2008, -9/+1I did a term search through ALL of my comments and those words came from YOU, not me. I do believe that libel is illegal.

I eagerly await your apology. - BrapAllgood, on 06/12/2008, -8/+1HERK SAID THAT. I quoted Herk in response. You are a liar. I await nothing from you, though. I'd be happy enough if you could learn some reading comprehension.
Herk:
"Let's see, the government is trying to kill you with chemtrails, the state of California is trying to kill you with moth pheromones and now the doctors are trying to kill you by treating your ***** dick.
Paranoia. Google it, Brappie. And I'm talking about the mental condition, not the game." - jcm267, on 06/12/2008, -1/+6Well, you moron, it was clear in my post that in that part of what you were saying you were quoting someone. The key part of that quotation was your response to it. I included your quotation of what Herkimer said because your response was a defense of that position.
You are almost forty years old and you have the logic and comprehension abilities of a baboon. I'm still awaiting your apology, Brappie. - BrapAllgood, on 06/12/2008, -8/+1You are intellectually dishonest. You attributed the quote to me. If you keep lying, I will report you and see what Digg thinks of your antics.
I have nothing to apologize for, but you sure have a hell of a lot. - jcm267, on 06/12/2008, -1/+5I did not attribute that quote to you, you dunce.

- TheMachine1, on 06/10/2008, -1/+5Reminds me why I left Slashdot because a few moderators controlled the choice of stories and blocked most all my comments. But Digg essentially has defacto moderators when a small number of users with a large number of friends get most the stories to the front page.
- jcm267, on 06/10/2008, -8/+45I was right. You take digg way too seriously, Surferess.

1. You say you're female, that's the majority of your friend requests.
2. You have 229 fans- people don't have to ask to be your fans, so if you were getting 30-50 a day your account would be less than a week old. You joined Digg 4/17/07.
So you're a liar, and thus probably not a female but a buttscratcher living in his mom's basement trying to get a front page article on digg. How sad is that?- Sulzer, on 06/10/2008, -3/+15I'm gonna pistol whip the next person who says shenanigans!!

- vault, on 06/10/2008, -2/+34Digg shouldn't let people add 900 friends in the span of two days. There is no real legitimate reason for doing that other than shoutspamming to hell and back...I would say people like that account for 90% of the friend requests I get.
- jcm267, on 06/10/2008, -1/+16I only friend people based on their comments and submissions. I never check on friend requests. I get too many every day to bother.
- vault, on 06/10/2008, -0/+18I still scan through the list to see join date...sometimes there are non-spammers without 900 friends who joined in 2006 or 2007 I get requests from.
Gets rarer and rarer, though. - GhostyBoy, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2I used to just add everybody, but now I just have like 500 friends, of which maybe thirty are people I talk to or shout to. I think I will just start deleting people who I never talk to.

- abarysh2, on 06/10/2008, -8/+3My digging is inversely correlated to the amount of work I have at my job... so even though I'm relatively new, this month I predict it will go up exponentially.
- KMye, on 06/10/2008, -4/+38Damn it, when I read articles like this on how to manage or attract good digg friends, or how to properly promote articles through shout-spamming, I just want to cry a little.
When I read 10+ identical "Great article, thanks!" waste-of-space comments like those at the top here, I want to vomit a little. It used to be a digg represented that sentiment, and when you had a big group of comments like those all within a short amount of time, someone was trying to spam with puppet accounts. These days, I think they're probably real people, all trying eagerly to join the circle jerk. What tools.- captainanndor, on 06/10/2008, -0/+11Agreed. The comment spam above was very disorienting. Very "This doesn't sound like Digg commenters at all. Where am I??"
Also her article is making Digg sound very much like a job. I know Digg isn't perfect, since it's basically just a fancy mob mentality, but I don't like the idea that people take it so seriously as to turn it into such blatant social engineering.- shortyjacobs, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2Yeah, sometimes you have to scroll farther down to get to the meat of the cynicism, douchebaggery, and diggchan spam.
- captainanndor, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3It kind of read like a combination of a forum for middle aged soccer moms and an ebay feedback page.
At least the cynicism and douchebaggery are grounded somewhere in reality. Sometimes near the very edge of reality, but reality nonetheless. The horn-tooting and ass-kissing up there were like falling into the Twilight Zone.

- Flipperbw, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2digg is kinda a circle jerk..
- koosh, on 06/10/2008, -1/+0Can I be your friend?
- captainanndor, on 06/10/2008, -0/+11Agreed. The comment spam above was very disorienting. Very "This doesn't sound like Digg commenters at all. Where am I??"
- ender7074, on 06/10/2008, -9/+20OMG I'm like so excited that I have a Digg friend.... Get a life.
- foltaggio, on 07/11/2008, -1/+2Where can I download one, preferably a Linux version?
- pakruse, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3http://packages.ubuntu.com/glife

- zyl0x, on 06/10/2008, -3/+19Yeah just think about it. If you didn't have so many friends, this useless article would've never made the front page.
- winnestow, on 06/10/2008, -8/+1they only belong as a friend if they digg huffingtonpost.com submissions
- brainsplit, on 06/10/2008, -9/+2Fap
- poidh, on 06/10/2008, -5/+16So, you have "friends" on Digg, but none in real life. Sounds great. Wish I was you.
- DucoNihilum, on 06/10/2008, -3/+21Wait, you guys actually get friend requests? I only get request from spammers.
- Zachariah, on 06/10/2008, -2/+4I don't even get those!
- Wartz, on 06/10/2008, -4/+6Same, many of those early replies sound like a circle jerk fest of "friends" adding comments just to get this blogtrash to the front page
- bacon_skoda, on 06/10/2008, -2/+4now you are getting the point of digg.com
- WallnutBoy, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4About a year ago, when I'd be told I have a fan, I'd go "ooo someone likes me?" only to find it some spamming prat who wants to 'share' their stuff by shouting it down my mouth...
Nowadays? I don't bother looking up the Fans list.. All my Friends are actual RL friends of mine, only two of them active... =/
- chdodd2012, on 06/10/2008, -4/+5I don't have this problem. :(
*slice* *slice* - XBunnyRacer, on 06/10/2008, -5/+22Good Science this person needs to get a life! Who sits there and analyzes the inner dynamic of Digg? Who CARES if some crap you found online gets to the front page.. What does that get you?
- bacon_skoda, on 06/10/2008, -2/+4Cartmen: "Hi, I would like to cash in my 1,000,000 diggs now"
...
Cartmen: "WHAT?!?!" - thedogfatherx, on 06/10/2008, -1/+6No *****. Who cares. I kind of gave up submitting stories. This stie is full of duplicates the people who submit then know full well it is a duplicate but do it anyways. If you don't have a ton of friends who will "digg" your submission then it won't see the light of day.
I like the concept of digg but like everything else the users ruine it becuase they need to feel popular and special. Sad really.
- bacon_skoda, on 06/10/2008, -2/+4Cartmen: "Hi, I would like to cash in my 1,000,000 diggs now"
- mustafya, on 06/10/2008, -4/+19It is fairly obvious your "friends" are the only reason this drivel made front page.
- mark076h, on 06/10/2008, -7/+3it's a good article that's why it got to the front page, and looking at this, she had more people other than her friends digg it, http://socialblade.com/digg/diggfpdata.php?user=Su ...
- darkfus, on 06/10/2008, -3/+7I don't know about anyone else, but I haven't the time for such a process. But its nice to know that someone cares that much.
- bacon_skoda, on 06/10/2008, -2/+2This guy does the caring for all of us.
- freezerburn666, on 06/10/2008, -7/+4i have no fwends :(
- Gioleb, on 06/10/2008, -6/+1I have a 100% popularity ratio.
Take that, Kevin! - jonmlm, on 06/10/2008, -3/+8is that really the wonderful thing about digg? i always thought that was the annoying thing about digg
- poploserdigg, on 06/10/2008, -2/+2(Digg + Obama) x iphone = the next great way for losers to pretend they are cool.
- BobMysterioso, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3Make sure to Divide by Ron Paul!
- poploserdigg, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2Ron Paul is sooo 2007, just like "rick roll'd" videos and "the last time digg'ers saved up enough pizza delivery tips to pay for sex"
- BobMysterioso, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3Make sure to Divide by Ron Paul!

- ConfusedCartman, on 06/10/2008, -6/+34Wow, it's amazing how much I don't care about this article. Buried.
- jo42, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1Yeah, really, who gives a soggy rectal expulsion about DiggIdiots, DiggTards and DiggMorons.
- ElJif, on 06/10/2008, -2/+12Wait, you can have "friends" on this thing?!
- raublekick, on 06/10/2008, -3/+1I get an average of about 0 requests per day. Thank god...
- poploserdigg, on 06/10/2008, -2/+4wait, this was serious?
- chr00t, on 06/10/2008, -2/+5Who the ***** cares???!!!! You obviously have no life.
