Just having a pair of breasts increases your chances tenfold.*
*Only applies if you are a woman. - br0wnstar, on 02/19/2008, -2/+23You are giving me this raise! I deserve this raise! [plays air guitar] Yes! [kicks] Yes! Yes! Hiya! The least you can do is keep my salary consistent with inflation! Keeya-eyah! Yes! Why are you gonna give me this raise? Why? Because... I'm awesome! I am awesome!
...probably the best way. - XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, on 02/19/2008, -3/+22beat yourself silly in front of your boss and get corporate sponsorship
- meshman, on 02/19/2008, -0/+18Before you ask, ask yourself, why do you deserve a raise? Have as many answers to that question as possible. As a bonus, use all reasons that have boosted the company's revenue in some way. If you're a lazy ass then don't even bother.
- blitzer, on 02/19/2008, -1/+15Work your way into an important niche and then threaten to leave.
- Richandler, on 02/19/2008, -1/+14By ***** punch do you mean punch with your ***** or punch his *****.

- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -0/+11Recommend not working at Walmart.
Also recommend not shopping there, but first things first. - loquedesea, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9***** you.
- marx2k, on 02/19/2008, -1/+10hahahahahah no, seriously...
- kanimara, on 02/19/2008, -6/+15I agree with the No ultimatums. I said I had another job offer, and asked for $2000 (which was next to nothing) increase to match. At the time I was their best person, but I didn't give reasons why I deserved an extra $2000... Was purely using the other job offer. One manager said "I think we can do that! I just have to wait until my boss comes in", then the boss called my bluff and I left. It's a year later, that company is falling apart, and I am making double, so blessing in disguise!
- NoCt1, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7FTA: Get a new job.
- zephyr42, on 02/19/2008, -3/+10I don't see it made of iron at all....
- Birdoftruth, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7***** him. I hate people like that. My sister asked to go home from work yesterday because her eye was scratchy and pink, and the boss told her it looked like she poked herself in the eye just to go home and was denied. But thats just Disney's great employee relations for ya. Anyway props to you for your accomplishment.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -2/+8I think all those things are worth doing, it takes great preparation.
- bonkeykong, on 02/19/2008, -0/+6Do you expect a woman to "Get a Raise Like a Man"? The title of the article was sexist, my comment was a satire.
Stop being such a *****. - LiquidLeopard, on 02/19/2008, -1/+6notice the asterisk?
- crapmatic, on 02/19/2008, -5/+10Secure your negotiating position with ass pennies.

- bonkeykong, on 02/19/2008, -1/+6I agree, but look at the wording of the article title and description. It's just as sexist as my comment.
- h3smith, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4The best raises I have gotten are from switching jobs. 30% the first job switch and 40% the second. Staying "loyal" to a company will only screw you in the long run.
- ozid, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4whoops digg that down.

- Matt2k, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Because the person in charge of payroll is the person who hands out raises?? Do you even have a job?
- thunderer, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Something I heard yelled backstage after a show while working for a venue that hosted Disney on Ice...
"Either we resolve this in the next 5 minutes, or I'm calling our lawyers!"
Oh yeah, sounds like some *really* lovely working conditions. - adooga, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Nobody is going under your desk for any reason. You know this.
- purple8, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Sad but frequently true. Friends in the field have stayed loyal to their companies, and I've hopped every 2-3 years, with a few short term contract gigs in between. They've had a more stable life, fewer gaps in insurance and fewer "oh ***** my contract is ending" moments, but the money's been a lot better for me. I love my current company and won't switch anytime soon, but I don't regret a decade of hopping.
- onefix, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2I have to agree with not threatening to leave. I've seen too many times where people would do it, the company gives a counter offer and they take it...and within a year they are gone.
Why? Because it breaks an implied employer-employee trust.
Think of it the other way...if your boss brought you into the office and said "Your salary costs us to much, either work harder or we're going to replace you with someone who works cheaper", wouldn't you be hitting the road as soon as possible even after you were told that everything is OK now?
Telling an employer "pay me more or I'm gonna leave" is the quickest way to make sure your days are numbered, because they don't want it happening to them again.
On the other hand, merit based raises are available in most companies. Just figure out how to get them (good evaluations, getting certifications, etc)... - Zybergod, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2That's funny... jk
- NoCt1, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2No you dont.
- gr3yn3t, on 02/19/2008, -2/+4ITS OVER NINE THOUSAAAANNDD!
- MortalynFlux, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Create a high-level report of your accomplishments, i.e., how and how much you saved the company money, along with additional training/education/certifications you have received since you were hired.
I disgree with the article, though. The quickest way to get a substantial raise is to get another job, putting the aforementioned in your resume. - GorfTron, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3Just float jobs, if you are a computer professional out of college. No employer will go from $45,000 to $70,000 in a year or 2. Just quit.
- Matt2k, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2More simply, an ultimatum it's your way of bluntly stating "I have power over you", and that's the best way to generate resentment. Simply put, don't do it.
- NoCt1, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3What in the *****? - random guy yelling -Trailer Park Boys-
- adooga, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2The American Beauty way was also pretty, pretty good.
