    I challenge you to find ONE professionally published book with extra space between sentences. It's just not done by anyone with any typographical sense.

This means that every character used the same amount of space regardless of its size. In order to make spacing look correct on these old machines you had to put two spaces after a period as the period used the same amount of space as say an M. There's no ***** need for it anymore. double spacing = obsolete k thx.

When writing with a pen on paper (perhaps you've forgotten), there is no defined space after the period. There definitely is a space, but whether it translates into 1 or two spacebars is another question.

    The rules we worked with were simple.

    When using a typewriter you insert two spaces after a full stop.
    When using a word processor only insert one. The font and kerning system should do the rest for you.

    I suppose there might be an argument for using two spaces with a non-proportional font, like courier. But probably not
