http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_%26_Eve - MiddleOfNowhere, on 01/25/2008, -0/+28While this is excellent CGI, this is not "How Evolution Happens", but a presentation of evolution's results. This will do very little to convince anyone believing that we were all planted here by some *cough* intelligent designer. Carl Sagan's classic "Samurai" clip may be about *artificial* selection, but it is probably a more convincing explanation of how certain attributes (in this case, an odd marking) allow one variation of a species to survive where others are killed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVSJNhUhV-4 . Just saying. :)
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -0/+24Chuck Norris is an evangeligal christian, jokes about him are no longer funny
- ToadLeg, on 01/25/2008, -4/+26I can't wait to see what happens in the sequel!
- jopjop, on 01/25/2008, -1/+21Interesting, though annoying that the monkey just appears rather randomly in a tree. That won't do much to make the creationists shut up.
- Demitaka, on 01/25/2008, -3/+23Where are the theatans?
- ElGanyan, on 01/25/2008, -4/+21No, because sadly this video is mislabeled. Interesting? Yes. An explanation of how evolution works? Not in the least. I am of the impression that this originally was probably accompanied by a voice over explanation (though still, it does not show "how evolution works" just the various stages of fish/amphibian/reptilian/mammal stages over millions of years, there was also an enormous jump from large carnivorous dinosaur to primate? Wtf was that all about?). Buried as lame (especially for looping that goddamn 300 song over and over).
- aussieNickuss, on 01/25/2008, -11/+28I thought this is how evolution happened.... http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=26wERYBu4mM .
BTW.....no comments, 59 diggs....front page?! - Anthet, on 01/25/2008, -2/+17Dugg for NiN (and awesome evolution cgi).
- tristanbethe, on 01/25/2008, -5/+18I thought this to be the extended Fat Boy Slim videoclip...
- Cojawfee, on 01/25/2008, -1/+14It's not hard to make dirt. You just grind up some rocks. That is your best against science?
- piesforyou, on 01/25/2008, -2/+15hell doesn't exist!!
:P - Halsfield, on 01/25/2008, -3/+16The full television episode is excellent if you'd like to see a fish>early invert timeline in decent CGI. It does have a strange human-ancestors vs insect ancestors storyline with constant back and forth power struggles through the millions of years of evolution. Definitely entertaining to watch though.
- raid517, on 01/25/2008, -1/+13Why do these idiots keep repeating that evolution is just a theory? All you demonstrate is that you have no conception of what a scientific theory is.
Gravity is just a theory too - as is electrical conductance - yet you are still sitting here fixed to your seat writing garbage on the internet on your PC. - cryptomystic, on 01/25/2008, -1/+12you're an idiot, read a book.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -0/+11Define missing link because there really is no such thing. All species are in transition. Everytime one of this gaps is filled, Creationist ask for more to fill the two new gaps that has formed. There is NO difference betwen macro and micro evolution despite your attempts to claim otherwise. It is only a matter of scale. This hypothesis was thrown out by science in the 1930s.
Now please provide a mechanism on what prevents "micro" changes from becoming "macro".
We have a lot of evidence. We have fossils that plot the evolution of Whales back to land mammals and horses down to small little creatures. The evidence is clear cut. It is dishonest and biased Creationist who refuse to accept the evidence that is widely available. There is no faith needed since evidence is available and multiple scientific facts support evolution ranging from geological to genetics.
Please read up on the definition of THEORY since nothing is higher than a theory(a law is not higher).
Please cite these so called studies that discredit evolution. - TritonX, on 01/25/2008, -1/+12ID is only considered a theory by those pushing it. In other words, it's utter ***** that is worth nothing.
- howie, on 01/25/2008, -1/+12Evolution is a scientific theory, not a tentative explanation. Evolution is supported by huge amounts of facts. It also makes useful predictions and has actual practical applications.
Intelligent Design is religion. It has no explanations, no nothing. All ID is, is an appeal to ignorance.
http://notjustatheory.com/
Evolution is a real explanation. ID is the lack of an explanation. - ToadLeg, on 01/25/2008, -4/+15The Creationist argument against that is that there is a difference between micro-evolution and macro-evolution - as if scientists need to actually collect data on species for millions of years for evolution to be credible. Something tells me that even after that, Creationists would still find some reason not to believe scientific evidence, so it's really a pointless discussion.
- howie, on 01/25/2008, -1/+12Theories aren't proven or unproven. They are supported by evidence or not. Evolution, as a scienticic theory, is supported by massive amounts of evidence:
http://notjustatheory.com/
In science, facts are what support theories. Theories explain facts.
Evolution is NOT speculation at all. It is a very solid scientific explanation which has withstood more than a hundred years of scrutiny. - Scynet, on 01/25/2008, -0/+11I'm just going to have to hijack a bit because, while the video was well done, it was absolutely NOT "how evolution happens". As stated below, it shows the different RESULTS of the evolution of some branch of species, but it doesn't show HOW it happens. Species don't morph their limbs to grow extra legs or whatnot like that, it all happens through the cycle of generations and how some traits survive natural selection better than others.
I'm not burying it because it was kind of cool, but don't bother arguing one way or the other over this video, it's inaccurate to begin with. - whiteguysamurai, on 01/25/2008, -0/+10Footage came from "Before the Dinosaurs" from the discovery channel.
*plug* http://shopping.discovery.com/product-59634.html - mahler, on 01/25/2008, -1/+11I'll tell you why evolution is proven.
- DNA mutations have been measured
- Natural selection is all around you
These factors don't prove that men decended from apes, but since we share alot of DNA similarities, it is very likely. And with carbon dating being relatively reliable: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiocarbon_dating we can check if the number of mutations needed to make the transition is plausable. - inactive, on 01/25/2008, -1/+10Evolution is a theory and a fact. A fact is a single data point and doesn't explain much. It is a fact that genetic changes occur in organisms due to natural selection-fact. A scientific theory is a well substantiated and supported framework to explain the multiple facts. Please go look up the definition of theory next time before sounding like an idiot.
Your argument that "fish can will itself to grow legs" show your ignorance about evolution. Natural selection selects for traits that are beneficial for the survival of the organism. It does not "will itself" to do anything. Please educate yourself in evolution before sounding like an idiot.
Why should I believe in an all powerful magic man in the sky controlling our destinies with no ounce of evidence?
Go take your made up Zeus God and shove it.
PS: Grind up some rocks. That makes dirt. - TritonX, on 01/25/2008, -0/+8One could argue, and the other could laugh.
- Spikeli27, on 01/25/2008, -3/+11that is some cool animation
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -2/+10We do.
- tuzziel, on 01/25/2008, -1/+9Dog or cat breeding is fine example of alteration of species, very present, spanning centuries not millions of years.
Creationist's rant: Breeding has nothing to do with evolution!! Oh, wait.. - LazyLiberal, on 01/25/2008, -0/+8It was clips from a show that was on the Science Channel about evolution up to man, I think it was 2hrs long
- piesforyou, on 01/25/2008, -2/+9Every argument with a christian is pointless because when you strip it down to the barest essentials, their arguments are entirely based on faith. You cannot argue with faith.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -1/+8Really? Please edumacate me please oh Creationist who has never once shown a basic understanding of evolution.
- pintomp3, on 01/25/2008, -1/+8haha, your source of logic is your 5 year old. i recommend a science book instead.
- JoeVet, on 01/25/2008, -0/+7The time frame is wrong (6000years) and they didn't show man at the very beginning and they forgot to show the flood that killed the dinosaurs. /s
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -2/+9i screwed up with the colors there. i hope it's not completely unreadable.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -1/+8@Esstee:
Nice try. Evolution does not deal with the beginning of life(abiogenesis) or origin(cosmology).
Can't you at least figure out which field of science you are attacking? - inactive, on 01/25/2008, -1/+7Sure. The mammals that were small enough to burrow and hide from the dinosaurs were adept at surviving in their "timeframe," so to speak. Natural selection favors all sorts of different traits at any given time.
- ThndrShk2k, on 01/25/2008, -0/+6Well, since they are fundies they will take the video at literal face value, and interpret that evolution happens that quickly, and those creatures that evolved live that long, randomly changing like a goddamn pokemon.
The video itself is just fancy play showing the process of evolution simplified into CGI action for science nerds who understand the principles of it. - inactive, on 01/25/2008, -2/+8Evolution is happening all the time, it just happens very, VERY slowly. Like the big hand on a clock, just cuz you can't see it move does not mean its motionless.
- eviltandem, on 01/25/2008, -0/+6I nominate you for most empty posts! You can post over and over without ever actually saying anything of substance! You win!
- ThndrShk2k, on 01/25/2008, -0/+6But if hell doesn't exist, then what will break loose? A black hole!? AGGH!!!
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -1/+7Really? What is YOUR definition of "something totally new" because that is a classic Creationist tactic of never defining this changes so that when changes are shown, they just move the goalpost.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -0/+6Evolution is a part of science. It is the basis for modern biology and genetics.
- ApokalypseNow, on 01/25/2008, -0/+6Linking species? You mean Transitional Fossils? there are plenty of examples out there if you are of a mind to search, but there is no such thing as a "transitional species" as all species are constantly in transition from one form to another, although this process can be accelerated by certain events as described by Stephen J Gould's theory of Punctuated Equilibrium.
If you want some good example of so-called "transitional fossils" look up Archaeopteryx, Hyracotherium, and Ambulocetus. - TritonX, on 01/25/2008, -0/+6You mean re-education. Like in those films where they put you in a dark room for months for your own good, then they repeat the same ***** again and again until you are a zombie and repeat that *****.
- imakecomments, on 01/25/2008, -0/+6Could one? Go on then. Show us your massive amount of evidence for Creation.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -1/+7Really? Please start the discussion. I'm all game.
- imakecomments, on 01/25/2008, -0/+6@animalwheeler who said: "Remember it is still a THEORY for a reason."
umm... Learn something: http://www.notjustatheory.com/ - archiesteel, on 01/25/2008, -0/+6The period at which the leg buds developed was characterized by large wetlands, swamps and marshes. Having stronger appendages than fins was very useful to navigate these wet-yet-encumbered environments.
- Sukino, on 01/25/2008, -0/+6It didn't show the great extinctions. For example, there were old world monkeys and apes out of nowhere and dinosaurs gone.
- ambrosious, on 01/25/2008, -1/+7I don't think the goal of the video was to provide any proof or evidence for evolution, just to show sweet animations of what certain evolutionary pathways might have looked like. But yeah, the monkeys were pretty random.
