- PacoDEmu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37The quality its pretty mediocre, they seem to be having some bandwidth issues, and it still seems more feasible to download the episodes via torrent (here in the US). But kudos to the BBC for offering these up in such a medium.

Not just a car show, THE car show - AlmostEvil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27The quality is pretty mediocre because the BBC doesn't allow non-UK people to access the high quality streams. The BBC multicasts their high-quality streams to most UK ISP's.
So, only people in the UK get access to the good quality. It'll only work for you if you access the BBC site via a proxy in the UK (that happens to be on one of the ISP's who multicast the streams) plus access the stream itself from a proxy in the UK. - EBots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Top Gear is one of the finest shows the BBC produces. I'm not that much of a petrol-head but this is one of the few shows that I watch religiously.
- gaznet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Glad to see my TV Licence money is being put to good use.
- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18It's a car show.
Idiot. - sjetha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13@randomnut You failed to realise that most American TV programs that are on websites can't be accessed at all from outside the US. At least the BBC is thinking that it has fans in the rest of the world, and offering them something.
- TyrionEagle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13See that's what happens on a TV station without adverts. No corporate pressure to say nice things or the ad revenues disappear!
And that's why I'm more than happy to pay my TV license. - skoles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I was estatic when I heard they brought TopGear to The Discovery Channel. Only later were my hopes dashed when I noticed they hacked together episodes and removed ALL of the jabs at Americans and our cars. That was truely the funnier part of the show what with the digs against the French, German and US automakers.
silicon caa....carbi.....ugh.. - Wolfman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12That is entirely freakin awesome, being in the states, now I wont have to feel so bad about it being the only show I still torrent.
- AlmostEvil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12As an addendum, if you have a friend in the UK ask them to download the high quality stream using VLC. Since you can download WMV streams with VLC. (not sure on Real, although there is a pay program that can do that)
- terrablebyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"See that's what happens on a TV station without adverts. No corporate pressure to say nice things or the ad revenues disappear!"
I totally agree.
In Britain, there is outcry almost after every episode, because of it's 'insulting' content.
What really makes me lol is that the BBC effectively replies to these criticisms with a 'STFU' :D
Top Gear really is a great program, one of my favourites, glad to see its available online. - vibez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I love the way the BBC have embraced on-line distribution of its tv/radio shows. They set an example for everyone else to follow. I just wished the quality would be a little bettter
- drunkenoaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@xavihax0r
I'm interested in your language use there-- are you really in London? Are you American?
You're in London and you're paying for the BBC with "tax dollars". Hmm. I'm in Manchester, UK and I pay towards the BBC's function in pounds by paying a licence fee.
And why should the BBC give content to the rest of the world for free? It's bloody good of them, imho. - beezn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13YAY for England, I love this show and I live in indiana. here we have to watch the lame ass shows on spike if we want to watch a car show
- deanlowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Each episode is a full hour and the show runs 2 seasons per year without reruns.
- riklomas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10In the UK, most of the TV we have run for 6-10 shows per series. This season of Top Gear *did* run for 8 shows (the gap in shows was for the World Cup):
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0163503/episodes#year-2006 - netburnr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Props to BBC for leading the industry in showing their shows on the web.
However, the complaints about quality and speed need to be addressed. Being a person that lives in the US, the only way I've been able to watch this show has been through torrents, and will continue to be the way I download them.
FinalGear.com has all the episodes back for a few years, go check em out and help seed the torrents so everyone can download quickly. I personally seed the newest episode for at least a week to help get the swarm going. - joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8There was a US verison. They redid all the talky bits between features and only picked features for American audiences. Suffice to say it was butchered.
There was also a proper series, completely remade, with American presenters, a few years ago. The Stig went over to America and did the track testing as well. That was *****.
Then the Discovery channel was meant to be airing the unaltered episodes. Maybe for the current series. But that hasn't happened yet.
Just think about how much money American networks have spent trying to remake British shows and failing miserably. - jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Word to that. Maybe better file formats, too. Xvid .avi comes to mind.
- randomnut, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13AlmostEvil: Good thats the way it should be. We pay a licence fee to the BBC so its only right that we get a decent stream of it. Those who dont pay for it, tough.

News, downloads, and forums dedicated to Top Gear and Fifth Gear. - lysdexia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12England?
There was me thinking that the BBC was a British organisation that reprsents Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England in equal measure. - jasoncart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@xavihax0r
Little bit more complicated than that - the BBC don't completely own the rights to all the programmes - sometime the production companies own them, and there are other parties involved, like the muscians that play the soundtracks etc etc.
Also, like everyone else - I pay my licence fee in pounds. Sure your in the UK? I think not. - Harvey_Mushman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6My mistake. I believe "series" in the UK = "season" in the US .
- M2Ys4U, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The BBC is funded in whole by UK license fee payers, it's only right that we get what we pay for in high quality.
- Madcowz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Finally we are standing up to the lame ass namby pamby I want to complain society we have. If ya don't like don't watch it.
For the rest of us. Jeremy you're the man!

BBC backs 'provocative' Top Gear
Jeremy Clarkson
BBC governors rejected a complaint about Jeremy Clarkson's Nazi salute
Viewers who are offended by jokes on motoring show Top Gear must accept such remarks will remain "an integral part of the programme", the BBC has said.
The corporation has issued a statement on its complaints website after receiving 500 objections in six months.
"Provocative comments" by hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May must not be taken seriously, it said.
The BBC said the audience should be "familiar enough" with Top Gear's tone to be able to cope with the jibes.
Sarcasm was part of Top Gear's appeal, the statement stressed, and members of the public and participants were never immune "from the team's acerbic comments and observations".
Were the presenters' comments and pranks carried out with any degree of seriousness... we would of course take issue with them
BBC statement
Last month, BBC governors rejected one viewer's objection to a Nazi salute by Clarkson on an edition broadcast last November.
They did admit there had been "a real potential to offend" but said most viewers would have known Clarkson often used "the most exaggerated stereotypes to support or defend his opinions".
They would not have taken his comments seriously for that reason, the governors added.
A BBC spokeswoman said there had also been "a number of calls" about a report on caravans broadcast on 16 July from "viewers who were taking issue with various aspects" of the feature.
The statement on the complaints website said Top Gear's format would not be changed.
But it reassured viewers that the corporation would continue to monitor the tone of the show.
"Were the presenters' comments and pranks carried out with any degree of seriousness, rather than being clearly tongue-in-cheek or adopting the deliberate overstatement that is the programme's trademark, we would of course take issue with them," it added. - STKD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Aka "PLZ SEED!!!" ?
- netburnr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No....only "clips" were available, not the entire show.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not to mention the fact that on the BBC, programmes have no intermissions at all which means it is a full 60 minutes of programming each episode. Which is great :)
- OneAMCoffee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They always make fun of the Big Three but the show really is too funny. Lucky bit**es get paid to drive super cars!
- JamesShiell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You'll find that while the BBC is based here in London it also has regional groups across the entire UK such as BBC Scotland and those chaps who make Doctor Who, BBC Wales.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Top Gear fans, it'll be coming back on October 8th, and the good news is it is running until Christmas, which implies it'll be a much longer series this time around!
- DefectiveHW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3a number of bbc departments have moved away from london. i believe the childrens stuff is now all based in Manchester or someware up north
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You must be pissed. Your sentence made no ***** sense.
- jasoncart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@behemoth
"pretty much everyone who works in it lives in north or west London"
By the end of the charter period more than half of BBC public service staff will be outside London. - netburnr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ PJB
WTF is "Proper TV", is that like a TV that drinks tea with it's pinky finger in the air.
//hehe - lostboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I happen to live in Bristol where the majority of the BBC wildlife unit is based for instance. I find this statement a bit erroneous.
- the_d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can play/rip these with VLC.

- surfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The reason the US get to see it is the British government give the BBC extra funds/resources to help with its world service obligations. If these funds weren't provided then the BBC would probably have the block the British website (bbc.co.uk) to international viewers and send them to the not-so-good BBC World website instead.
Reason they do it is to cater for expats and provide other means for people to access information internationally. - MKREdit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Although they make fun of the big three no car company is off limits for them. If BMW, Jag or Mercedes make a dog they get ripped for it as well. Jeremy even ownes an american car, given the problems he's had with it (Ford GT) it may be his last. Its a funny show but when it comes to the cars they always shoot straight from the hip. Unlike Car and Driver Telivision, Motorweek and alike.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1October the 8th? Seriously? That'll only be a two month break.
Well, I know I'll be settling down in front of the TV with some snacks that night ;)
Hooray for Britain :)
//edit : Did you mean back on proper TV or over in the US? - Boofster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is one of the best shows in the world. It will make you laugh and it has some really nice cars and a whole lot of power slides.
The BBC is great to give us that but you can download all the torrents of the shows in almost HD quality from FinalGear.com
Every episode going back a few years is worth downloading as the supercars are really timeless machines and this is probably the closest anyone of us will ever get to feeling what it's like to drive one. - rogermoore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*Britain*
- jimlovett, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Oh not it's not. this is just the iplayer, if it's more than a week old it's toast.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree. I'm in England so I can watch it when it's aired, however by broadcasting it on their website to, say, America I think it takes a little guilt from the shoulders of those who 'torrent' it and rightly so.
- trev0006, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Amazing find, thank you. http://www.dpccars.com/ http://www.discountpartcenter.com/
- rogermoore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To avoid editorial "weighting" of bbc.co.uk/news, I load all the RSS feeds in tabs, then flick through each tab. That seems to give a pretty unbiased world news round up.
