- AirRaven, on 10/10/2007, -1/+56At the very least he's led a life he can be proud of.
Optimistic to the end. :-
I feel so sorry for his wife and kids. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+55dang. i got a knot in my throat.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+50I like how he said that the brick walls that seem to stop us from what we are pursuing are really just there so that we can prove how badly we want it. They're there to keep the other people out. Smart guy.
- urbandistrict, on 10/10/2007, -0/+49I can not digg this story enough.
Thanks for posting. - RevJonathan, on 10/10/2007, -4/+42That was phenomenal. Very powerful stuff. God bless him for this, it will be moving for many digg visitors today.
- adamconduit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+31Anyone know where I can view the entire lecture?
The link here doesn't work: http://www.cs.brown.edu/events/talks/pausch.html - indraneel24, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28The lecture was on the 18th of September. Soo, it's two days old.
- JimXugle, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29I met this guy in August at CMU... he told my class that he was on the road to recovery and pretty much golden.
He gave a really awesome lecture too.
How old is this video? - MattB123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25"It's not about realizing your dreams but how you live your life."
That's good stuff. - CognitiveDiss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25Tear to my eye.... to be that positive in the face of death is something to admire. I only hope that on my deathbed I will have no regrets and have a loving family to carry on a positive legacy.
Kudos to this brave soul - mr1337, on 10/13/2007, -3/+28The other front page story didn't include a video. RTFA or GTFO!
- christoast, on 09/04/2008, -0/+23I love the brick wall metaphor, so true.
- zeptobyte, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23The brick walls aren't there to keep you out. They're there to give you a chance to show how much you want something.
That's awesome. Great lecture. - gnychis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22here for a non-streaming version:
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/front_im/pausch_9-18-07.wmv - sfanetti, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22Cancer is the down side to being a multicellular organism. It is unfortunate, but death is the only certainty in life.
- jsully, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21Be happy that they had the privilege of having such an awesome person for a father and husband. I'm sure that's what he would want. Time cut short is infinitely better than no time at all.
- Alpinesol, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Holy Crap! My computer graphics professor (Ken Perlin, who didn't show this tuesday (the 18th)) was in the video at 3 minutes 35 seconds. That's why he didn't come to lecture! Weird coincidence digg, weird...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Well at least he had one final goodbye.
- banq59, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18And taxes
- AforAlexander, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21Narrator: When people think you're dying, they really, really listen to you, instead of just...
Marla Singer: - instead of just waiting for their turn to speak?
I enjoyed the lecture, but this quote from Fight Club always comes to mind with things like these. - JorgeGT, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14thank god death comes just once...
- Edorey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16and you are a bit of a douche... its just a feeling I get
- civperc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Brilliant, and uplifting. Thank you for posting this. The world needs more people like Dr. Pausch.
- amycham, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I read about this in the Wall Street Journal today. Just the article had me tearing up...
- kilraaj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10The other digg'd article about this mentioned that he had recovered, then relapsed.
- NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11And what if I happen to think that believing there is NO god is your personal delusion?
It's a two-way street, folks. Atheists, generally those who know what they're talking about when they call themselves that, cannot prove there is no god, and they know and acknowledge they can't prove it, but they have made a decision that there is no god based on their observations. Christians, Muslims, Hindu, whatever theology you might pick, cannot prove there IS a god/gods. But based on their observations, they have decided to believe in one. People on either side of the fence who deliver their assertions as proven fact are both delusional, and are both antithetical to what they have turned into a cause. - gfair, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The only thing I hated about this was the end when he was being talked about by others talking about memorial scholarships and memorial bridges. Don't call it a memorial while the guy is still alive.
- TypeEE, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11This is not the first successful person I heard to allow their kids to paint their wall.
- ahpro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Poor guy! Good for him for not being negative about it.
- RioGangsta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7this was really moving
- Yondelldude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7He already seems like he's the "cool" professor in his department. 500 diggs for this story.
- vtcessnapilot, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11Don't know why this is being dugg down... its a link to the original at Carnegie Mellon
- adamconduit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Found it: mms://wms.andrew.cmu.edu/001/pausch.wmv
- Etheo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It feels as if he's not just being optimistic - more like self-actualized.
- maffiou, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Facing your own death is one thing, but I'd be gutted to leave my kids behind, not to see them grow up, not to be able to protect them, love them, just even know them...
I often wonder what sort of adult they will be one day, I'm in no hurry to find out but I want to be there then... - RevJonathan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6True, but this links to a video of it.
- jwmcevoy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Nice head wise ass.
- doronster195, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4One of my favorite quotes of all time.
- jpsilva, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4amazing lecture.....great insite of human mind and how easy it is to give up when finding a brick wall. True sucess comes only to does who really keep trying to go throw the brick wall.....
thks - OxygenJunkie88, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7That is one of the funniest comments I have ever read on Digg.
- phiend, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3" if you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of its self." Very smart man can't wait to see the entire lecture
- kahsoon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Thank you so much for this video! I'm going through really tough time recently and his piece of advice manage to motivate me.
- gfair, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The full lecture is available in 10 parts on Youtube, as well:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4HqdnjgkExY - Tsujigiri, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So many great lessons from a man who has known so many great people, and in turn became greater. The full lecture is long, but it so worth your time guys. You're guaranteed to glimpse a perspective you've never considered.
Link: mms://wms.andrew.cmu.edu/001/pausch.wmv - lsteve13l, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3i agree with azntiger1000. watch his whole speech. its worth every second. his last 2 headfakes were so sad.
- SeaMowse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Did you not see the very beginning of the video? He is dying of Pancreatic Cancer - the most deadly type of cancer. Everyone I've known (uncle included) who was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer died in a matter of a few months. I know of one person who died less than a month after being diagnosed.
- SeaMowse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Wow... that was a tear-jerker - but in a good sort of way. Very touching, to say the very least.
- cyberdillo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Very profound.....with a state like that, anything is possible. Could this sickness be turned around?
That would be wonderful for his family, friends and the rest of us. - dclowd9901, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2He says he's not in denial, but that's exactly what someone in denial would say.
I kid, of course. His words were incredibly inspirational, and I can only hope I have his strength when I am facing the end of my life. -
