- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -4/+77I knew she had a cushy tech job before I clicked the article. And she lives in Seattle... how stereotypical.
Our local newspapers have been flooded with stories like this over the last 10 years. Some Microsoft or Amazon worker leaving their nice job to start a non-profit or do something else "meaningful". OF COURSE, I do applaud that, but It's pretty easy to quit your job and "give up everything" when you already have money.
"In the end, I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter what you’re doing. As long as you are doing something that expresses your passion"
Like Teachers, or Firefighters? People that actually enjoy what they do (usually) and don't have the inflated ego of a yuppie tech kid to tell the world about the sacrifices they make in the pursuit of happiness. - AlanFang, on 08/21/2008, -5/+77Wait so blog spam on digg will allow me to quit my day job? Buried.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -0/+43I live everyday as if it's my last.
I owe the bank a million dollars and the cops are looking for me. - dizavin, on 08/21/2008, -0/+41a crucial point of this article was left out: Tina's high paying job and the money she made from it was the only thing that made her "jump" possible.
- Rikkochet, on 08/21/2008, -1/+38Thank god someone said it.
The secret to happiness, apparently, is to build up a lot of capital with a high paying job and then manage those funds appropriately and tell other people they should do the same.
Not everyone pulls in 6 figures with apparently no family to support.
This article is rubbish. - SneakyNinja, on 08/21/2008, -1/+37Let me sum up the article for all of us regular people here. She's had a well paying job and saved up enough money to quit working for 2 years. Now she's telling us how great it is to live out her dream. However, she hasn't actually done anything to generate a stable income by following her dreams. She's just made so much money she saved it up and then stopped working.
While I totally applaud the idea of finding a way to live off of doing what you love, I feel a little patronized. Kudos to her for being successful enough to do what she's doing, but not everyone has that luxury. - chuckDontSurf, on 08/21/2008, -5/+38Great, more blogspam from Tina. Hey Tina, how's the breakup going? I'm eagerly awaiting her next article, "How I became homeless after quitting my day job."
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -2/+31EARN $50,000/WK WORKING PART TIME FROM HOME! QUIT YOUR JOB AND BE YOUR OWN BOSS! 555-1234
- fascistpig, on 08/21/2008, -3/+22Dude, you do realize this bitch made a ***** of money before she stopped working to fulfill her dream of sitting in front of a computer all day tweaking her Wordpress templates while drinking cocktails for breakfast? Do yourself a favor, go find work and feed yourself and your family before you find yourself destitute.
- Antimatt, on 08/21/2008, -2/+19To sum up... Save money from your job. Quit your job and live off savings.
- username7410, on 08/21/2008, -0/+17Wow, thank you! This area is full of people who got rich quickly and made so much money they actually got bored with it, ***** you! The fact is 95% of people don't have the luxury of "following their passion" they have to eat and pay rent. People work jobs or careers they don't like because that's what you do to survive! These life bloggers always fail to mention how working hard at a job you're not passionate about is a valuable life lesson in itself.
- drexl, on 08/21/2008, -1/+17Hey Tina....see my shovel? Buried!
- mardraum, on 08/21/2008, -6/+21hey Tina, you are an inspiration to the world and your blog may as well be the parousia. I do find that not washing my vagina and letting the scent become overpowering has been a blessing and an opportunity, your writings have changed my life for the better. I'm a new person thanks to you.
***** off. - datastorageguy, on 08/21/2008, -3/+18+ Get a bunch of people to Digg your web site
+ Get a bunch of people to post useless and inane comments on said article on Digg. - ha$$le, on 08/21/2008, -0/+12ha$$le's New and Improved Life Plan:
1. Get a job paying alot of money, so much that you have too much to spend and accidentally save enough to take and extended LOA from work.
2. Write some worthless drivel bragging about how much money I saved accidentally.
3. Post "blog" to digg.
Thanks, Tina! - mardraum, on 08/21/2008, -4/+16it's the comment spam that makes it so annoying.
- Elranzer, on 08/21/2008, -2/+13Blogging is not a real job.
Hey Tina, I'm using AdBlock while looking at your blog. Is that ok? - Import98, on 08/21/2008, -1/+12Buried as spam. I could care less about people quitting their jobs to "blog" full time. I do not blog, I do not care about any strangers life enough to read their blog, so in essence I find people being able to make money off blogging ridiculous.
She'll have a 9-5 again in a couple of years, I guarantee it. - Frost9999, on 08/21/2008, -2/+13Do you work for this woman or are you really always this cheesy?
- slantyeyed, on 08/21/2008, -0/+10wow, so i've learned get rich FIRST, then invest and have that money pay your bills, THEN you can quit your job and pursue your dreams, OK! Hey look at me! I'm so rich that I don't have to work anymore.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -5/+15“I spend fulltime pursuing my passions.”
does not pay the bills... - SphinxatUF1, on 08/21/2008, -1/+11If everyone "followed their heart" we would all be surfers, professional fishermen, actors, professional game players, writers, and artists. Meanwhile, no one would be a garbage man, plumber, cafeteria worker, short order cook, assembly line worker, waitress, mall worker, etc. and the economy would tank even more than it already has. The whole "find what you love and do it for a living" line is bull. Everybody's gotta pay the bills, but there are only a few professional skateboarding jobs out there.
Find something you're good at (or get educated and become good at something), that people will pay you to do, that won't cause you to die a little on the inside every time you go to work, and that provides enough money, benefits, and time off to let you "pursue your passions" on your nights and weekends.
America needs to cowboy up and quit complaining that we have to work for a living (just like pretty much everyone everywhere else other than the super-rich), and either do without or go to frickin' work. If we all just shut off our tv's and didn't read drivel like this article, we wouldn't even know about these rich people that flaunt their care-free lives in our faces all the time, and we'd all be a lot happier with what we've got. - ChileanGoD, on 08/21/2008, -1/+11Apply for a night job.
- chuckDontSurf, on 08/21/2008, -0/+10FTA: "Ever since I learned about the concept of financial independence five years ago from Robert Kiyosaki,"
You really don't need to read any further than that. - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -3/+13Quit your job to start a full time blog? Some people do make it doing this but i'm still amazed at how this can last cause blogs get real lame real quick and most of those blogs are bout creating your own blog or secret of attraction but how many pseudo religious blogmasters can people subscribe to and why the need for so much of the same regurgitated inspirational articles do we need a day? Seems like you can sum up creating your own reality in a few articles the rest are just more regurgitated examples found on other blogs or common tasks with the law of attraction spin on it. Seems to me like those you too can get rich on internet business from ebay commercials in the middle of the night.
- analbumcover96, on 08/21/2008, -1/+10"I believed (and still believe) that when we are doing that which we are completely passionate about, money will come."
ummm no money doesnt grow on the trees i planted last year so no you are incorrect - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -1/+10SPARE US THE ***** TINA!
- chuckDontSurf, on 08/21/2008, -1/+10It wouldn't be as annoying if the comments weren't so obvious.
- Bersy, on 08/21/2008, -0/+8Robert Kiyosaki - ha.. a person I know (or thought I knew) became brainwashed by this guy's books and Primerica.. they spew this financial independence crap, and in reality it's just them making money off you. This guy regularly lies about his life to make it sound like he is successful - "I just bought a house!" - his mom bought it for him. "I have to go to a business meeting" - he has to go speak at some recruitment seminar. "I have many friends" - meaning contacts in Primerica. "I'm going to be a millionaire within about 2 years" - 2 years later, he's actually in debt. To top it all off, during one of the several occasions I confronted him on the matter, he confessed to being brainwashed by them, and added that he doesn't care - After all, he is helping people gain financial freedom and that is reward enough!
- benologist, on 08/21/2008, -2/+10If your heart is telling you you should be a full time blogger it's time for a transplant.
- lars972, on 08/21/2008, -0/+8So she quit a high paying job to blog...hmmm. She is independently wealthy and CLEARY has no kids.
She's one in a million....blogging doesn't buy my kids Top Ramen! - fascistpig, on 08/21/2008, -2/+9"Ever since I learned about the concept of financial independence five years ago from Robert Kiyosaki, the seed of a dream had been planted."
Her ***** hero is the guy who wrote "Rich Dad, Poor Dad." LAME! - amc1709, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7Dude,
You posted this on the wrong site. You want http://www.dearabby.com/ - username7410, on 08/21/2008, -0/+71. Get filthy rich at high paying Job
2. Quit said Job
3. Live Dream while blogging about it
... pretty much sums up most life bloggers advice, although they never mention step 1. - Tyrghast, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7"money cannot buy you happiness"
and that's where the author of the article goes wrong.
Drugs make you happy and can be purchased. - cawfee, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7I work 50 hours a week. I also laugh at people that quit their day jobs and think viewers / readers will swarm in droves to read their blog drivel, making them rich off the ads nobody clicks in the process. Since when has delusion and lack of common sense become so widespread and commonly accepted?
- plarp, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7great advert! read my blog cause it's my new job! but really i don't have a job! ps. read my blog, and click on the links! cause this is my job! ps this isn't my job! o wait it pays my way! click the links!
- Jhorra, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6This is great and all, but throw in a few kids, and the equation becomes much more complicated.
- yellowgoose, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6I honestly don't know why this site is so popular. Is it because Tina is a good self-promoter?
I think her site is one of the most trite, generic, sappy, and overrated self-help blogs.
Bug-buh-buh-buried! - MarsSentinel, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6Kind of like the man who goes to the unemployment counseling office and discovers he really wants to be an unemployment counselor. Circular carp.
- Elranzer, on 08/21/2008, -1/+7If her goal was to harvest massive ad revenues by submitting her site to Digg, she's in for massive phail. Most of us (all of us?) use AdBlock here.
- thereisnostate, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6You don't get something for nothing. Get a real skill and you will get paid what the market determines.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -3/+8I stopped reading it when he mentioned that he used to earn a lot of money before quiting his day job. If I have a lot of money I would quit my day job to and pursue my passions. Who wouldn't? This guy is an elitist.
- winmywii, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5Not true. The digg user base is becoming less technical by the day. You can tell by the stories that are becoming popular. Before you know it the average digg user will be the equivalent of the average aol user.
- leif77, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5"Its simple... kill the batman."
"If its so simple, why havent you done it?"
"IF YOURE GOOD AT SOMETHING... NEVER DO IT FOR FREE." - chuckDontSurf, on 08/21/2008, -2/+7Win.
- diggerpleez, on 08/21/2008, -1/+5Joanna: So you're gonna quit?
Peter Gibbons: Nuh-uh. Not really. Uh... I'm just gonna stop going.
Joanna: When did you decide all that?
Peter Gibbons: About an hour ago.
Joanna: Oh, really? About an hour ago... so you're gonna get another job?
Peter Gibbons: I don't think I'd like another job.
Joanna: Well, what are you going to do about money and bills and...
Peter Gibbons: You know, I've never really liked paying bills. I don't think I'm gonna do that, either. - OasisR123, on 08/21/2008, -1/+5"..Peru and South America..".
....ok, I would like to go to California and U.S. or maybe London and England - ScotchInBox, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4I'm sick of the human Habitrail job I have too but becoming a blogger and contributing to all the same old noise sounds like a nice recipe for failure. Maybe if she started a web company that actually provides some useful function and value, but yet another blog - please. If you have the nads (and funds) to do what she did you had better have a very clear plan and vision as to what you're going to do - not "follow your passion and the money will come" - that's just plain foolish.
- bubba9999, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4Quitting to go live your dreams is easy. Affording to live after quitting is the tricky part.
