- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -1/+49You know... I get a lot of laughs from that "erotic-service" section...
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -2/+46If Craiglist were to switch to "clean only" as suggested, wouldn't someone else just pop up to fill the erotic-services hole?
- gobbleplex, on 09/09/2008, -2/+44'Everything is anonymous and anything goes...'
And the problem is? - RC212V, on 09/09/2008, -2/+33Who cares. If you don't want to see ads for hookers then don't click on the link to erotic services. Simple no? And personally prostitution shouldn't even be banned in the first place. If someone wants to pay for sex and someone wants to take money for sex, what is the problem? People who don't want to do so are not impacted whatsoever.
As for scammers on craigslist, use common sense and you won't have a problem. I also find that a lot of times stuff gets flagged anyway.
Seems like some people always need something to moan about. How convenient that someone promoting a competing site had so much to say about eeevvvilll craigslist. - Icyfenix, on 09/09/2008, -1/+31We NEED places like craigslist. Places that are like the wild west, where anything goes. Uncensored places on the internet that you can rant at or buy a hot pink nuclear sub. Its the ultimate forum and with fewer and fewer people knowing about usenet you've got to keep some public spaces.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -3/+33I can't believe no one has jumped on my "pop up to fill the erotic services hole" double entendre. When did you diggers become so mature? ;)
- an0nymous, on 09/09/2008, -1/+24I heard you were looking for me?
- kellfinder, on 09/08/2008, -0/+22I have a fight to pick with "anonymous".
- PuterPrsn, on 09/09/2008, -1/+19Caveat emptor - do your homework and you don't have a problem. If it's too good to be true, it probably is. And anyone who hires a hooker (or anyone else, for that matter) via the internet and doesn't arrange to meet in a public place first is just stupid.
- Patricia1, on 09/09/2008, -0/+15How would I ever find a roommate?
- an0nymous, on 09/09/2008, -0/+14I like the wild west of Craigslist. Freedom comes at a price, but it's a cheap one.
- charlietuna, on 09/09/2008, -0/+14What?
''In the past year, police in Canada have busted a Toronto high-end hooker who lured johns through Craigslist''
Lured? Biased writing to be sure. CL is victim of its own success, but beyond that I think (real) miscreants can be caught with some effort. - lankyvaulter, on 09/09/2008, -0/+11unfortunately if craigslist starts trying to filter things, they create a duty to filter the site. thus once they start filtering, if anything happens, they have opened themselves to being sued. thats a no brainer.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -1/+12anything doesn't go, because they let the users vote to get things removed
why does this broad hate democracy? - rezonq3, on 09/09/2008, -0/+10It's about time someone said that.
Interesting skills to have like knowing when someone is scamming you, or how to approach a transaction that will not put you in harms way, or how to ignore what is not of interest to you.
Why are people so hopelessly attached to the lifestyle of no personal responsibility and imposing their babysitter ways of living on the world? - OfficialJoe, on 09/09/2008, -2/+12"Flugpo" sounds like something those two girls did with that one cup...
- RC212V, on 09/09/2008, -0/+9This is true, but a lot of that is because it is illegal. If it were legal it could be regulated and you could probably put a large dent in the forced sex trade. By creating a situation where women who are basically sex slaves are also breaking the law you make it difficult or impossible for them to seek help to get out of the situation.
- moxley, on 09/09/2008, -1/+9***** THIS.
Craig's list is AWESOME exactly because it doesn't censor things and is free.
I have news for this senationalistic author of the London tabliod ***** fearmongering celebrity obsessed press:
Stupid people can be picked up with all of the free chat applications. Stupid people can be picked up and murdered with email. are you going to censor that?
There is no protection for the naive other than for them to educate themselves and be careful.
Sort of like how your parents and schools (at least mine did, I was born in the 70s) told you not to talk to to strangers, not to get in a car with a stranger.
Girls, if you are looking for a quick lay on craig's list, be careful.
Guys, if you are looking for a quick lay on craig's list (or answering an escort ad) be careful, it could be bait for you to get robbed. Get references...Know your surroundings - don't be a vicitim.
And lay the ***** off of Craig's list ignorant idiots - it is free and it is awesome how it is. - amishjim, on 09/09/2008, -0/+8..."Law-enforcement officials in Canada agree that Craigslist is not the problem; "It's the people using it who are,""...... No *****.
- pistboy, on 09/09/2008, -1/+9What we really need is full blown censorship.
Seriously people!?!?! Why is it Craigslist's responsibility to censor ads? A rule of thumb is that if something doesn't feel to be 100% legitimate... it probably isn't. Sure, things would be safer if the "erotic services" section were removed. Wouldn't you get the same effect by simply not going to that section? If you are stumbling around where you feel you shouldn't be, you probably shouldn't be there. Don't be too surprised when something bad happens when you don't listen to your instincts.
Bottom line... censorship is bad. Craigslist shouldn't change all. Just don't be silly when you peruse the classified ads. Use some sort of judgement and skepticism. - krets, on 09/09/2008, -1/+9Yep, exactly. That section is better for a good laugh than XKCD.
- TheSpook, on 09/09/2008, -0/+7It would be nice to make an even tiny attempt to thwart automated scripts. Beyond that, I agree, I like that it's open.
- zip000, on 09/09/2008, -0/+6I look on there every couple of months just for a laugh. The ratio of guy pics to girl pics is humorous - most girls don't post pictures (unless they are really advertisements for escort services or something) but most guys do post pictures....of their junk.
Who wants to see that? I guess some people do, but it just seems silly to me. - WiretapStudios, on 09/09/2008, -0/+6How about don't meet random strangers from the internet?
Also, do you know that guys number? I have some annoying neighbors. - EndouOuto, on 09/09/2008, -3/+9More rubbish from a nanny state newspaper.
- BXRWXR, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5Yeah, but what fun would that be?
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5ha, too funny. seems like another craigslist crime story every week
- kellfinder, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5Ha! That was fast!
- kellfinder, on 09/08/2008, -0/+5Very true. I think taking away the anonymous factor does help. It is not a guarantee of safety, but it is a step in the right direction at least.
- moheybee, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5Too bad he didnn't have a great idea for the name.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5Fast? 18 hrs is fast?
- hellsing47, on 09/09/2008, -2/+7The majority of Craiglist's traffic more than likely comes from random sex solicitations.
- TheSpook, on 09/09/2008, -1/+6Craigslist is moldy. I often wonder why they don't have a captcha and/or e-mail verifications for posts. I would also like to see an indicator next to the listing to illustrate how other users flagged it. So if people flag it as spam, it would show a little icon next to the listing that denotes "This posting may be an advertisement. Other users have reported it as spam."
I don't necessarily have a problem with SPAM in itself as long as a human posts it - I like that Craigslist is open (necessary evil). What I do not like is the automated script postings. - AmyVernon, on 09/08/2008, -1/+5I'm sure, but then people who used Craigslist would be able to avoid those adverts. Of course, that wouldn't prevent scammers from using it.
- saltydawkins, on 09/09/2008, -1/+5"Law-enforcement officials in Canada agree that Craigslist is not the problem; "It's the people using it who are," Cpl. Robertson said." One tiny little sentence that puts the ownership where it should be and it's totally buried deep in the reactionary drivel. Buried for being whiny.
- AngelaQ, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4If two users report a post as spam or illegal, it automatically comes down. There's no need to put a flag on the listing.
So in some categories anything goes and everything stays up forever, but in other categories, it's like a war zone. The only stuff that manages to stay up is the spam and the illegal stuff. - kellfinder, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4Depends on what you are doing during those 18 hours as to whether it goes fast or slow!
- AngelaQ, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4There are legal erotic services (like phone sex) and illegal erotic services (prostitution). The problem with erotic services on craigslist is that while having a general rule against advertising illegal goods or services and a specific rule against prostitution, they put all the erotic services in one category and encourage the prostitutes to pull down all the legal services.
- thall, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4FTA: "The 30 million free ads posted on local Craigslist sites every month have become so popular that the site is rivalling newspapers in the classifieds game."
...Uh, this is an article from one of those rivaled newspapers....
"But not if this keeps up."
...wishful thinking. This is just the newspaper business playing the FUD game... - phogasmic, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3I hate when stupid people get scammed, because the first thing they want to do is add more rules. Most scams can be avoided by following one simple rule "If it seems to good to be true, then it probably is."
- darny, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3Rule No. 1 about Usenet...
- wynja, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3IT'S NOT A ***** CRIME TO SELL SOMETHING THAT IS PERFECTLY LEGAL TO GIVE AWAY FOR FREE!!!!!
- roho76, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3Where there is a will there's a way. It's not perfect on Craigslist, but everybody's happy and if your not then don't use it. It's a "free society zone" so to speak. And I'm not bombarded with advertisements trying to sell me ***** I don't want.
- NinjaBoy, on 09/09/2008, -2/+5I LOVE the idea of a site that improves upon craigslist. (Just like facebook did with myspace) How ever it seems to be only showing me NY posts. And I live in the middle of the country (Missouri) so sadly the site isnt very useful to me. One of the main things i like about craigs list is that when i go to it i know all the posts i see are for ***** in my area.
Edit: I found how to search for my town and the funny thing is. Both posts were spam lol - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3Why would you ban erotic services?
If people want to look for sex to pay for then that's their prerogative.
Why don't you just let them live? They don't need permission, they make their own decisions. - gcopenhaver, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3There's a big difference between Craigslist and the "wild west".
Craigslist allows for complete anonymity between two users, if the person who submitted the ad wants it. (I know that craigslist has the power to help track people down, but they don't just do that for any user that asks.)
The wild west was before the internet, so people dealt with each other face-to-face, and many had guns. Though people may not necessarily know your name, someone will likely remember your face if they witnessed you doing something bad.
With that said, I don't see any reason to regulate Craigslist. Craigslist is all about free trade, and any regulation that any government imposes or that Craigslist does on it's own will only decrease trading, making the site less useful. There will be a downward spiral until it [hopefully] comes back into a balance, but the site will likely have less users, with less people being able to trade what they want to trade on the site, and Craigslist will make less money.
If you get scammed (a trade that wasn't what you agreed on) on Craigslist, just like in real life, then take legal action, but not against Craigslist. Take legal action against the person that scammed you, if you think it's worth it.
Be smart, and you likely won't get scammed in the first place. - moxley, on 09/09/2008, -1/+3You win the "shortest post that calls it like it is" award for today!
- moxley, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2Escorts are awesome.
- EndouOuto, on 09/09/2008, -1/+3Don't tell me what to do.
- jjmckay, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2Well said. striketheroot.com ftw!
