- haastyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28When I lived in Saudi Arabia, if you were in the middle of one of those and didn't have long sleeves and pants man did it hurt. It would feel like your getting poked by like 1,000 needles every millisecond.
- danakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Bet that did wonders to the camera lens.
- kamikazecow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Funny how half the people are just walking around likes its nothing, and the rest are running for it, heh. Really cool video, i remeber when iraq first started and the news reporters were sent in with everyone, they would have reports on these.
- anareric, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22That blows.
- blake213, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I think it might have a lot to do with the camera and its inability to cope with the light change...I highly doubt it was completely pitch black to the naked eye. But I could be wrong I suppose.
- garg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I've been stuck in something similar when I was in Pakistan. After I got home and washed my hair it was all mud coming out. One of the craziest experiences ever. I had to wear my sun glasses while it was completely dark because all the sand was going into my eyes.
- LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12blake213: there's something terribly unnerving about the terms "naked eye" and "sandstorm" being in the same context...
- Nadinengland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8But did you see how big it was? Or are they usually that big?
- a99tandem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9That's just plain unreal. I lived in the deserts of west Texas (no not Midland, thats not west Texas- El Paso IS,) and we had sandstorms where the sky turned reddish brown.. but never did the place go dark!
- gotkarma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10This certainly gives more credibility to the insane special effects showing crazy sandstorms in Hidalgo, The Mummy etc.
- RichGC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Amazing how dark it gets, yet the light could still be clearly seen, I assume they have this so people can find there way to shelter through the storm.
- Powerdrift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You go to ebaumsstupidworld?
- ProfessorRiffs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Is your name Corey Hart by chance?
- eelozano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yeah, they come out....look at it...shrug...and continue with their day. Then the other people come out...look like death struck and panic.
Good video overall, dugg! - gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Thats a lot of physical sand that is in the air and the sand is not just at the surface area, its quite high if you view it from afar. I can see it easily during the area dark.
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yeah that surprised me the most
towards the end it was pitch black
visibility is probably only a few feet - SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The people who didn't go running for it were better equipped to stand in it, jacket, pants, face mask of some sort.
- frogpelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As many times as you look.
- Robomonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That was awesome!
- kamikazecow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7@bluenova Touche....
- darkein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Where is darudes sandstorm song when you need it!?!?!?!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was just like my Christmas in Saudi Arabia in '91. Some people get snow others get dust storms.
- pr0cty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2cue the techno
- aaron.dunlap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is freakin crazy!!
- supdegrave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2seems like none of the commenters so far have experienced a dust storm at burning man ... this looks oddly similar (swap the folks for more freakishly dressed, perhaps). it was amazing to watch several huge dust-devils roar through the city in rapid succession this year . :)
@blake213: i completely agree; i doubt that the scene was as dark to the naked eye as the camera shows. - MasT3r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0now i want a Hollywood version of this!
man it would be SO awesome - ig33k010011, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1HOW MANY TIMES ARE WE GOING TO SEE THIS ON DIGG AND EBAUMSWORLD?!?!?!
- mmmthmtskier, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Dupe de dupe: http://www.digg.com/general_sciences/Sandstorm_in_Iraq_
- nasalexportbeta, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2and when there was no meat, we ate fowl and when there was no fowl, we ate crawdad and when there was no crawdad to be found, we ate sand.
- bluenova, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5@kamikazecow, If you remember when Iraq first started that would mean you were around during the first world war when the British named it the 'state of Iraq' in 1920. Funny how the only Iraq known today is the one Americans are at war with.
- DaltonS, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4Incredibly old, but still good footage.
What is Digg?
