- mongo22, on 01/07/2009, -0/+22Thanks, this is my kinda list. Another reason I love Mashable.
- Buzzbean, on 01/07/2009, -2/+21Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.
- OwdenBowden, on 01/07/2009, -1/+15This would be really great if I could only read.
- tehShane, on 01/07/2009, -0/+10They forgot to mention;
https://www.bookdepository.co.uk/
Great prices and free shipping worldwide. What's not to love?
Still, it's a pretty handy list that they've compiled. - Vectorkov, on 01/07/2009, -0/+9No thanks. Reading books off a computer monitor just doesn't work for me.
- EtherGnat, on 01/07/2009, -0/+8Allot.... You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
- warriorscot, on 01/07/2009, -0/+7Allot of young people read more than the previous generation. I'm only barely in my twenties and I've read more books in the last 10 years than either of my parents in their whole life. And most of my friends also read allot and have fewer prejudices against certain types of books than older people generally do. I would say books as a medium are in better shape now than they were 10 years ago.
- marc-ee, on 01/07/2009, -0/+7Oh lookie here Amazon is at the top of the list!!! Never heard of that site....
- tehShane, on 01/07/2009, -1/+78 Ball says 'Better luck next time'.
- rsbryswrrl, on 01/07/2009, -0/+6Wow - my OCD started kicking in when I saw Shelfari. ...must...begin...organizing...books...in...alphabetical...order...and...listing...them
- m1ck, on 01/07/2009, -0/+6Also worth checking out http://listmania.us/
- monkey20three, on 01/07/2009, -0/+6I also like "Book lovers never go to bed alone".
- LargeTrout, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5I buy from these people a lot. I highly recommend them. (And no, I don't work for them).
- SuperVepr308, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5Glad to hear it, warrior. Well done.
- dsendecki, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5I love mashable, as well. Yet at the same time, it seems that portions of this list end up giving short shrift to the independent and small press. I think that's a huge oversight — check out http://www.spdbooks.org and http://www.smallpressexchange.com — one is a great place to pick up new titles and support small presses, whereas the other's a community focusing on the same thing...
- user24, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5They left out http://www.thingsinbooks.com !
- esus4, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5Abebooks FTR
This is the site where small booksellers worldwide put their books up. It has everything from a copy of Ulysses for $65,000 to the Cliff Notes for a $1.00.
http://www.abebooks.com - rsbryswrrl, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Oh you're not alone at all! I actually have my own quirky Dewey decimal system of sorts to categorize all my cd's, cassette tapes and albums (yes I still have such outdated technology LOL). It starts with a rating of how much I like the artist/band, then goes from there to genre and alphabetical listing. Typing all this makes me realize how much of a weirdo I really am...
- Zulu1001, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Readitswapit and Bookmooch get a vote from us. Both have their problems but have saved us a load of money on buying books.
Matt @ http://www.dailylego.com - wantguru, on 01/07/2009, -2/+6worth reading! thanks for the post!
- SuperVepr308, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Outstanding. My wife bought me King's new book of short stories and I guess I am rediscovering fiction after years of non-fiction only. I also picked up Desperation and The Regulators yesterday to get back in the groove. Books are truly a person's best friend. I hope the medium doesn't die (younger people these days kind of worry me).
- Buzzbean, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4One of my favorite sites. What out of print or collectible book you want? They can probably find it for you.
- foucaultsvac, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Total sarcasm?
- SAEJO, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4I just finished the book I was reading last night and was getting ready to research some new books. Perfect timing!
- rsbryswrrl, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Wanna hear something funny? Big brother watching my computer at work gave me an "Access Denied" on pseudopod.org for ""Adult/Mature Content;Violence/Hate/Racism".
- rsbryswrrl, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Wow - that's a really cool idea. I bought some secondhand travel guidebooks from the thrift store and found airline and attraction ticket stubs inside. I thought it was neat that the book had been on a journey to a faraway place...
- uptown, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Add CoverBoom to that list: http://www.coverboom.com
- jbbuena, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3I like the idea behind BookCrossing.com! :-o
- johnnick, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Another great source is the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America - http://www.abaa.org
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3You have that problem too? I have a mild form of OCD, I obsessively collect and alphabetilize my books. I have over a 1000 books now, I spend hours redoing them every month, especially when I'm under a lot of stress or sometimes because I'm just being obsessive. I spent 3 days cataloging my books on librarything. Good to know I'm not the only one whose OCD manifests in obsessive collecting and organizing.
- Wolfsoap, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3If you like book cover design this is a goodie:
http://covers.fwis.com/ - inajeep, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Yes therefore we should ignore it and never speak of it again. Damn old articles cluttering up the internet. I mean if you didn't see it when it first was published, no one should ever get to read it again. While we are at it, let's burn the history books too, it's old news.
Excuse me, I must go a wring my socks out as they are just dripping with sarcasm. - ultraJesus, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3I love books. I've been reading so much since I canceled my TV subscription in favour of watching shows I like on the internet. Currently partway through a book about how musicians affected the 1960's counter culture, and another about the rivalry between Henry Hudson and Samuel de Champlain as they searched for the northwest passage.
Learning is fun. - Vosem, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3I really like Shelfari. Online bookshelf, but nicely done imo.
- AnimaStomp, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2I like whatshouldireadnext.com it seems pretty solid from the suggestions so far.
- rokklobster, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Don't forget, "When I get a little money, I buy books. And if there is any left over, I buy food."
- rokklobster, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2You're not alone... when I'm stressed I organize my iTunes or my Gmail contacts. It's very soothing.
- herrshuster, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2@rsbrswrrl
and it doesn't give you that for digg? interesting.
/s - Ilia, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Another site is http://slapastory.com and http://fictionthis.com, a friend of mine is developing fictionthis while I am in charge of slapastory.com. Both an interesting take on writing and reading short stories.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2oh my god... my family! :D
I have about thirteen hundred books in my collection, although they are all digital so its a bit easier to organize. :P
I also have quite a few hardcovers and a few paperbacks, but I'm not sure how many. I've loaned too many of them out to friends and family, some I've lost in moves, others I'm just not sure where they are. But I keep them in order. Alphabetically by size, genre and then by whether they're paperback or hardcover. I think to anyone else they aren't organized at all, but it seems to work in my head just fine for some reason. - berserc, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Isn't there any way they could have squeezed more ads into this site.
- Octophetus, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2I always use Alibris.
- rand21althor, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Wow, the link for Project Gutenberg on that site doesn't work. Someone left out a suffix.
- Mutton, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2I used Shelfari for awhile, but I switched to livingsocial because it has better integration with Facebook: http://livingsocial.com/
- analogtyler, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2This is the internet. Welcome
- koenigje, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2It does for me at work!
- estee0703, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2and not one site about people who like to ***** books
- richehh, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2"Books are the best friends one can have"
No, friends are. Dugg. - mariathepirate, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Oh, dear.
- LucasVB, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Needs more bookchan.
