16 Tips For Getting Good Sleep
huffingtonpost.com — There's a lot of advice out there about getting good sleep -- it's VERY important. We quickly adjust to being sleep-deprived, and don't notice that we aren't functioning at a normal level, but lack of sleep really affects us. If you're feeling blue or listless, try going to sleep thirty minutes earlier for a week. It can really help.

- xtinamo, on 05/17/2008, -1/+8I've found that poppy tea works better than just smoking alone. The wake up is quite pleasant as well.
- dominikkom, on 05/17/2008, -2/+9Depending on where your getting your poppy seeds/pods and how their harvested you could be ingesting morphine, codeine, and papaverine

- R1b4z01d, on 05/17/2008, -0/+11Some strains make you stoned and some make you very awake and aware. Its more of a head high. Sativa VS Indica
- mal1964, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2"Sativa VS Indica" I had no clue about this, And probably never would've, Thank You! :-)
- unclemeat, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2The problem with these strains is that they contain very high levels of THC and very low levels of CBD (doesn't get as much credit as THC seems to, not sure why: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabidiol). This is bad, because CBD is an anti-psychotic and the incline in use of sativa strains with low CBD levels (especially skunk here in the UK) are the reason more people develop schizophrenia from heavy use than they used to. That's not to say that you'll develop schizophrenia from casual use of sativa strains. You probably wont. About 2.5% of heavy skunk users develop schizophrenia. Take that as you will.
Oh man, why do I know all this *****.
- fanclerks, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Depends on the strain. Some strains will give you energy, some will drain you.
- clearwaterlab, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1That's why it's called "Chronic." Get it?

Weed keeps me up worse then caffeine. - taosk8r, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I smoke pot all the time when I have my usual 'onset' morning insomnia.. No dice on that.. Takes OTC sleepy pills, and Valerian.. - aydoubleyou, on 05/17/2008, -1/+7Smoking weed has never helped me sleep, in fact it keeps me up. It stimulates the mind and afterwards I cant stop thinking about random crap all night.
- michael43, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3My job has random drug testing so I quit smoking pot years ago, but I got my share of it when I was younger. I have to agree with you, pot would make me think of all sorts of stuff, once I figured out how to travel faster then the speed of light, but unfortunately, the short term memory loss got me and I can't remember just exactly how that was going to work....:)
- cannonball, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2funniest thing i have read all day. thank you.

- orph3us, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1I don't know how people can fall asleep after getting stoned. I just feel like playing video games or well, even with the downer types, I just end up getting depressed, but not sleepy. Probably have some problems, but ya, I prefer keeping a consistent schedule and never compromising. I have had BAD sleep problems. Staying awake til 7 am for a week before I'm able to get back on schedule by pushing it back throughout the day. I now consider sleep the most important part of my day :) Never go to bed after 2, no matter the peer pressure! Of course you can make exceptions, but only after you have developed an iron clad sleep schedule for a few months.
- xJORDANx, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Amen!
- ReignInMud, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2I'm kind of surprised by the amount of people unable to sleep after smoking a bowl. I feel it's kinda waste to sleep on a bowl but I find it very possible to sleep. I just relax, and start thinking about certain things, and within 5-10 minutes, I'm out like a light.
- Lewiji, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1I tried that, but when I woke up I couldn't scrape the porcelain out of my teeth
- StickWST, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2It will put you to sleep, but not a healthy one, It makes it MUCH more difficuly to reach REM. I say purposely overdose on diphenhydramine.
- vadelect, on 05/18/2008, -0/+3It's always bloody weed isn't it? The answer to sodding everything. Never a good word for wine, beer or the 3 litre bottle of Lambrini given to you for free at the kebab shop because they feel sorry you [as they watch you eat the large meat special alone (at a picnic table curiously built indoors) and humour you as you attempt to speak the Turkish taught to you by a mate which you thought meant "thank you, this was delicious" but turns out to mean something about his sister]. When was the last time you heard someone say "Best tip: Drink a bottle and a half of cheap Merlot, eat half a ton of reduced price stilton, watch Street Cops or some such other derivative and then use a cat as a pillow". Oh sure, you'll say it, but suddenly *you're* the pariah, *you're* the one with problem, *you're* the one arguing with the tramp who won't take the Lambrini away which you left in an alleyway behind your house when your housemates wanted to put the takeaway pizza in the fridge. I'm getting another drink.

- fuzed, on 05/17/2008, -6/+18I would somewhat agree, but when I do that, I wake up super groggy the next morning.
- jcorn1, on 05/17/2008, -3/+62I have seen the effects of sleep deprivation when it comes to school. Losing even 1/2 hour of sleep can really mess up a student's school performance. At one college I know, kids were selling ADD drugs to other kids who wanted to stay awake during exam week. It worked, too.
- richardhammond, on 05/17/2008, -0/+8As somebody who has ADD, those drugs saved my life. The problem now for me is I can't have a normal sleep schedule. I want to go to bed at 4 am and wake up at 1 pm. Don't know why but thats what my body likes to do. So during the week I get no sleep at all and on the weekends I am a zombie.
- unpolloloco, on 05/17/2008, -0/+9I do that and i'm not on ADD drugs!
- rohan1234, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6me too
- Chronoped, on 05/18/2008, -0/+4hey let's go fishing!
I don't like washing dishes!
look, a squirrel!
- Enasni1212, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Sounds like your circadian rhythm is messed up. I don't know what your schedule is right now, but I find the best solution is to stay awake until you're tired (4 AM in your case), but set your alarm for whenever you'd like to be waking up. So, stay up until 4 AM, and sleep until 9 or 10 or whatever. You'll go through a few days of being extremely tired, which sucks, but once you adjust, you'll start falling asleep earlier and waking up earlier.
- BryanJK, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1that always works, but then your body just wants to keep going even after the bedtime you set for yourself
it's a matter of self discipline

- rubenz, on 05/17/2008, -1/+5It didn't quite work out for this young lady:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bflYjF90t7c - Harboggles, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Yeah I know that's true. I have 50 MG vyvanse legally and I have a lot of offers from people to use it i can easily make 5-7$ a pill, and during finals week I could in theory charge 15$ a pill...but that would be illegal and I don't want to be known on campus as a prescription pill dealer haha
- goomba323, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4During finals week my buddy makes 100$'s on perscription pills. His girlfriend went as far as faking ADD when she went to see the doctor (twitching, not paying attention, saying she has a hard time concentrating in class) and she got a perscription. The pills are a joke though, they really have the same effects as coke. I get all sweaty and my heart beats and i can't stop talking, but my essays are usually fantastic. :-)
- fanclerks, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2That was regular practice at my college. Almost everyone was using some form of speed during finals week to study. I never took em, but I knew plenty of people who did.
- biggiantmat, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1I'm taking my exams at the moment, but I'm just sticking to good old fashioned Pro Plus (Caffeine pills). they're pretty good, but 5 or 6 at once will really ***** you up. I had the shakes for ages, and i was startled by everything :) Quite funny really.
-Oh, and yeah, a big fat joint sends me straight to sleep :) crazy dreams though.- dangodango, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Some good tips here (comments) on how to not get a good nights sleep

- Whadabala, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1Or you could sell them caffine pills for $15 a pop.
- RikkiTikki, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4at one college? at every college. My roommate was an adderrall dealer
- Enasni1212, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Yeah, Adderall is the most used from my experience. It's legal speed. I know several people who take Adderall whenever they need to study or write a paper. I'm tempted to do the same, but I already have enough trouble concentrating, and I don't want to become dependent on the stuff.

- ACwriter, on 05/17/2008, -4/+15One has to understand why milk works or why it doesn't to get the most benefit. Milk and banana with L-Tryptophan is more likely to cross the blood brain barrier. Your diet throughout the day can also limit effects, with competing amino acids. Drinking Green Tea and such in the day helps. Melatonin works great IF you're deficient in it...with few side effects. Also when a cow is milked and processing affects the levels...I'm curious about melatonin enhanced milk myself.
- Wilsontristan, on 05/17/2008, -3/+12Wait, what?
- frozzenst, on 05/17/2008, -2/+7Wow, for the last week, I've got as much sleep as I normally do for one single night. The article did make me read it. Cheers, mate
- cor315, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1This article made you read this article? wtf?
- frozzenst, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1You can see how adequate I was after getting no sleep
- Qong, on 05/17/2008, -5/+4I agree, sleep is very important. I can't say for sure if those tips are helpful, I've never really had a problem with getting to sleep, the problem was more not having enough time to sleep, which no tips can help.
But for people that have enough time to sleep and are having trouble getting there, I would suggest you try anything that you possibly can. The difference between being fully rested and only partially rested is huge. Not getting enough rest will burden you throughout your day. Though I can't say for sure whether it is completely negative, I can think of several great ideas that came to me while I was very tired, running on very little sleep. - kraft123, on 05/17/2008, -14/+8Sleep is very important indeed! I sleep 4-5 hours per night from years!
- BrendanSheehan, on 05/17/2008, -1/+10You need more than that.
- staffell, on 05/17/2008, -1/+29They missed out having a healthy diet.

- mal1964, on 05/17/2008, -0/+8You do pass out and it seems like a solid night sleep but alcohol consumed within an hour of bedtime appears to disrupt the second half of the sleep period. The subject may sleep fitfully during the second half of sleep, awakening from dreams and returning to sleep with difficulty. With continued consumption just before bedtime, alcohol's sleep-inducing effect may decrease, while its disruptive effects continue or increase. This sleep disruption may lead to daytime fatigue and sleepiness.

- Wilsontristan, on 05/17/2008, -2/+132"Slather yourself in body lotion"? That doesn't really sound comfortable to me. Sticking to the sheets and such...

- AlwaysAwake, on 05/17/2008, -7/+25The causes of sleep deprivation can be many, and varied. Sleep apnea needs medical attention, treatment, and is much more common than most people realize. But, far and away the biggest single cause I have observed within myself, and others with whom I have shared about this problem, is addiction to the Thinker/Feeler/Self. Bedtime is NOT the time to review my life, and "figure out what is going on, and what to do about it". That kind of activity in the mind, often called racing thoughts, is a symptom of Thinker/Feeler/Self Addiction. So, if I pay complete, non-judgmental attention to my mind, with no intention to stop it, I see that when I lay down after a day of trying to "get ahead" in the stream of ruthlessly efficient activities we accuse of being "life", that is precisely what my conditioned mind wants to do. Figure "it" all out, adding more stress, to what has already been an impossibly stressful day of "struggling" and/or "enduring".in wasteful mental activities of the futile "pursuit of happiness". Something we have been conditioned to "do" since early childhood. It is only in clearly observing that conditioned mind; the train of thought/feelings, always moving mentally from the past, into the present, and then the future; the structure of it; the falseness of it. that it effortlessly withers away. Then both waking hours, and sleeping hours are no problem. "Happiness" is not a project; an ambition; something or someone to "become" in the future. "Happiness" is being Now, choicelessly aware; "happy" for no reason at all.
- Typhoon2009, on 05/17/2008, -1/+10Does wanking fall under the 'feeler' category?
- derek20cali, on 05/17/2008, -1/+3You sound like you've been smoking too much.
- AzzidReign, on 05/17/2008, -3/+2Sleep apnea isn't the problem for most people. Most people don't live a healthy lifestyle is what causes it. Not exercising, being overweight, not having a clean environment, HAVING A TV AND COMPUTER IN THE ROOM, etc. That is what is causing this so called medical condition of "sleep apnea". People need to get their lives in order.
- orph3us, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1you sound like me... and i think both derek and azzid have great points. I don't know if you smoke, but cut back if you are having problems sleeping. Second, not everything in life is a philosophy, as you say and I have learned as well :D ... Living healthy and letting go, (control is the goal of any thinker/feeler i think) is the key. Do exercise, get sun, get rid of the tv/computer in your room... Done em all, and they seem to help. Also, I find it amazing that so many of us have the same kinds of problems, we are all so alike. And yet we are all so withdrawn that we never see each other! We should start a support group, call it diggers anonymous :D

- nascentia, on 05/17/2008, -1/+27This usually ends with me getting LESS sleep...I love to read, and keep doing the "One more chapter, THEN I'll sleep" bit. And next thing I know, the sun is up and I've finished the book.
- BrendanSheehan, on 05/17/2008, -0/+7I can't say I've ever had that trouble, usually a few chapters makes me sleepy in bed.
- fuzed, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3My point is more about the TV being off. I spent years falling asleep to the TV being on and I got the worst sleep of my life. Reading is just something to keep you occupied.
- thedragon4453, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2God, I have that same problem. I usually have to put down the book an hour or more before bed. I can remember being up till 3am one day when I had to be up for work at 6. Finished the book, though :)

- TexasMd91, on 05/18/2008, -0/+3What is this so called 'book' you speak of?
- pax85, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Yeah, only works with books, you don't wanna read anyway :).
Reading a book back in school time, always made me tired. A fell asleep after 10-15min, just because I hate reading books for school (not school books :D).
- nascentia, on 05/17/2008, -1/+27This usually ends with me getting LESS sleep...I love to read, and keep doing the "One more chapter, THEN I'll sleep" bit. And next thing I know, the sun is up and I've finished the book.

- Typhoon2009, on 05/17/2008, -0/+17Get to bed earlier. Chances are you're staying up later than you have to. I know I've been staying up late this past week for no real reason. Going to bed at 12AM when you have to get up at 630AM isn't good... because then you hit the snooze button a few times and before you know it it's 7AM and you still haven't showered.
- grimward, on 05/17/2008, -0/+16I can personally attest to the fact that chilling your bedroom makes you more sleepy. As my computer is located near my bedroom, I open up the windows an hour before bed, that way I gradually get more and more chilly until I reach a threshhold where I get sleepy. Works like a charm :)
- vidalsasoon, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Keep your nose clean too.

- gravityboard, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2There have been several articles about better sleep habits on digg in the last 2 months that I've tried and these tips can REALLY make a difference. After about a week I tend to forget some of the smaller details but those make the biggest difference... like drinking a glass of water right before bed (but don't eat!) rejuvenates your cells and another glass when you wake up helps get your body processes going. Plus most people aren't properly hydrated so the consistency is very healthy.

- joot2112, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4The technique I use lately is to go through the alphabet and think of things in a category, such as "animals" or "food". Apple Banana Carrot Donut ... I try to vividly imagine each thing with as much detail as possible... what does it look/sound/smell/taste like? Sometimes I start at the end of the alphabet and go backwards. If my mind wanders, I steer it back to the letter where I left off. I usually fall asleep before M (from either direction). Best of luck to all insomniacs.

- RMoore08, on 05/17/2008, -1/+249. Slather yourself with body lotion. This feels good and also, if you're having trouble sleeping because you're hot, it cools you down.
