digg promotion algorithm updated
digg.com — digg now takes several factors into consideration when promoting stories (other than just total number of diggs): story source (is it a blog repost, or the original story), user history, traffic levels of the category the story falls under, and user reports. This should help us eliminate some off-topic content and SPAM. The only change you might notice is that stories will no longer be promoted at 15 diggs. Some will be promoted with less, others with more. digg on.
- 285 diggs
- digg it
- SIN2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Thank you mr digg master :)
- jrsims, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm curious - what tools and technologies do the Digg people use to build digg.com?
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3LAMP: Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP.
And a bunch of geniuses, of course.
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3LAMP: Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP.
- mattjb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Interesting, sounds like a good plan. Good work, guys!
- idunnopoetry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2thanks for the great site!
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thanks, Digg people. I hope to see some great stuff here soon!
- dtang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2jrsims, looks like they use a very simple template, some sort of blogging ultility that is modified so that users can rate posts, and simple javascript.
- cdrom600, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"... Digg on." Reminds me of the Aerosmith song "Dream On".
- 1gunit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2wile this may seem like a great i dea on the serface i thought digg was all about leting the diggers decide what made it to the front page but now i if i submit 2 storys lets call them sory A and story B (lame i know) story A gets 20 diggs and story B gets 10 is it right that story B makes it to the front page 1st (i watched this happen last night) because the administator decided that he/she did not like the soruce or that cause the user was new they didnt have enough rep i mean this is the start of a bad slope ware this site could be come more like slash dot and i dont think anyone likes that idea whats in the next up date? if you dig a story it wont mater casue you dont have the rep and only the top ten diggers voice matters.hey i could be way wrong but i dont think this is a good idea sure its not cencership but its not that far from it say the admins dont like the website www.randomwebname.com he/she can set it so a news item thats on that page never makes it to the front page or if it dose its gona take 50diggs ok end of my long ass rant
- raj3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yeah the thing about if its linked through a blog is in my opinion a bad idea, i agree with gunit on this one, some of these changes kind of overcomplicate things, did anyone see last night what happened with all of darkhacks stories, chaos.
- SparqMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think what's more important is the way that new stories are listed. In the sections they're ranked by diggs, not by newness, so new stories don't really float to the top.
- lorderunion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2could you guys post the algorithm or something? this seems shady and against the whole idea of "digging" stories alltogether.
- 1gunit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2yea and if you look righ now at dark hack storys that are on the front page they have all been dugg by darkhaxard(member sence (m/s) March 16, 2005)darkcrow(m/s March 15, 2005)MercenariesX(m/sMarch 08, 2005)oujisama(m/sMarch 08, 2005) and if you look at there profile as i just did you see they all just LOVE dark hacks storys but no bedy elces at least not as i could see all i did was a quick look though
- ChacoNazi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0thats kinda weird; about your long ass rant, long but very helpful
- 1gunit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yea dont get me wrong i love digg but there some isssues that need to be resoved if its ever gona beat out slash dot and lets face it that is the goal of the site owners and alot of the users for that matter
- jefflundberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone else feel that a few more categories should be added? They become meaningless if they're too ambiguous.
- 1gunit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0oh hell yeah ther need to be more i mean ther a apple a linux but wares the Microsoft category ok i know not tomay people like M$ but the do make a lot of digg worthy news plus i think there should be a "other" catigory alot of time i find myself puting storys in the liks srction cause i can tsee them going in any other section
- ik0n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11gunit - See that button that says "check spelling"? Use it! Also, proof read your posts for grammatical errors before submitting them. Doing so will add some credibility to what you're trying to say and might encourage people like myself to actually have the desire/patience/etc to read your comment.
- Johnsillyhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hate people like you
- hikb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0me too
- acr2001, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1sorry 1gunit but you're wrong. by doing this, they eliminate idiots who skew things and cause crap to make it to the front page. this way, there is a ladder system, and people can still climb the ladder to have a voice.
- ryan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thank you. No more crap getting dugg up every 5 seconds.
Amazing how much fewer posts are dugg after this update. - 1gunit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0more like amazing how many of darkhack's have made it to the front page
- ryan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow 3 posts in a row from darkhack...
- 1gunit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yea how is dark hack having 10 out of 15 storys on the home page making it so "eliminate idiots who skew things and cause crap to make it to the front page. this way, there is a ladder system, and people can still climb the ladder to have a voice" i sent a bug report to the admins about this hell darkhack has only been a memeber sence March 02, 2005 and has had a 100 storys on the home page with a submitted stories to homepage of 53 % thats just unbeliveable somthing tels me hes did some some stupid hack
- ik0n, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Hopefully you proof read your "bug report" so they'll actually read it! :-P Seriously man...
- andru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is actually pretty horrible. Shouldn't it be up to the users to decide which stories get promoted? Also, blogs can both link to other stories AND CREATE ORIGINAL CONTENT. What if a blog posts a commentary or article on something original? How does this "algorithm" tell the difference? The original premise of digg was to give the voice to the users. Now you are slowly taking it away?
- ryan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0After some thought, this is a terrible idea. Just because a story has a eye-catching title where people would be attracted to click the link does me that it is a good story. I may have a story titled "MAC MINI FROM APPLE!!!!" and thousands of people will click the link to see what it means, but that doesn't mean the story is good. I could just link to Apple Store...
- quickness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ok ok, before this gets out of hand... you should know a few things about the new algorithm. First, stories are still promoted by users and this will never change. Digging is how stories are promoted as the algorithm is based on diggs. So what changed? The main change was the way we deal with spammers/off-topic content. For example: If a user is constantly digging or submitting stories that are considered off-topic or SPAM (by users via the digg report feature), then digg requires that their future posts receive a higher number of diggs to be promoted. As you can see with the DarkHack promotion problem, we are working on ironing out a few of the details..
As you know, we differ from other tech news sites in that the users pick the homepage content – this will never change. With the influx of new users, comes new spammers – we're just adapting our system ensure you always receive the most relevant, fresh, user dug tech content available. - andru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But again, if you are leaving it up to the user, then the users will take care of the spam by reporting it - correct? The algorithm that changes the amount of diggs needed depending on category, link type, or user takes away from the foundation of what many of us believe the site was founded on. With more spammers will come more people to report that spam and get rid of it if it truly doesn't belong here. It seems the new algorithm takes AWAY from the power of digg users, rather than enhancing it.
- raj3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0once again 1gunit strikes gold, great catch, i knew something was up with darkhack, ive been here way longer than him (daily user) and dont have nearly as many homepages, unless hes making a full time job of using digg.com something is wrong. please do something about this its really getting out of hand, the front page stories have been really terrible lately, almost all of them crappy stuff from darkhack.
- Luke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is great news because it will make digg even better! It's always good to try new ideas to keep the content fresh....
- cassiopeianld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1huh what algorithm there is NO algorithm to be seen, so how about it Kevin: what is the mathematics behind digg?
- shwetaa79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is digg going to open source its application to allow other to use this platform worldwide.
- hikb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my comments
