A New Hat For The Eiffel Tower [PICS]
serero.com — David Serero, principal of Serero Architects, said in a telephone interview that his firm's proposal was merely a spontaneous design it had submitted to the Eiffel Tower management group in view of the tower's approaching 120th anniversary and, he said, was neither a response to a design competition nor solicited by the tower's management.

I hate that crap making good Duggs bad with greasemonky commenter helper or whatever. show the link if it is so old!!

But seriously, digg's search is terrible.

Interesting article though, and this one has much more images than the last. - yojiffyskippy, on 03/31/2008, -4/+4Who cares how old it is? For people (like me) that haven't seen it before, it doesn't matter if it's a week old or 20 weeks old. If you're not smart enough to ignore it because you can tell from the caption that you've already read it then you're an idiot. Move on and quit whining.
- KennMac, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1I always see this argument when someone claims 'old' on an article. It really goes both ways. YOU were the one that missed the original submission. Those of us who have seen it, are stuck with duplicate popular articles, which also degrades the content of the site.
Digg creators make you jump through a lot of hoops before submitting an article for this very reason. Surely, when the submitter of this article created the submission, he was notified that there are other similar articles relating to the same subject. The submitter of course ignored this and claimed it to be unique.- supermanred, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1So? Get a life. Don't digg it, read it OR ***** spend 10 minutes commenting on it if YOU ALREADY DID. When I see some commenting about how they have already read this article before, all I am reading is "I HAVE NO LIFE"

- OwdenBowden, on 03/31/2008, -7/+2WHO GIVE A ***** ABOUT THE FRENCH.
Frankly - they are the root cause of just about every conflict the world has ever seen. And if it were not for the united states (constantly having to bail them out) France would be called GERMANY. The only thing good to come out of France was the French Resistance and that was started by an American.
I have a great idea for the 120th anniversary - pull the ***** down and put up a starbucks.- ibeandy, on 03/31/2008, -1/+2It's prpbably worth pointing out Frances involvement in the American war of independence here
- OwdenBowden, on 03/31/2008, -2/+1Like always - the French got involved in the American Revolutionary war of Independence for their own benefit. And their benefit was a weaker England which in turn means a stronger France. don't fool yourself. America has paid the French back for their help a billion fold - Enough is enough.
It is also worth pointing out that the Nuclear reactors being build in Islamic and other country's that should not have access to this technology (which will eventually lead to the death of millions of innocent lives after terroist attacks) were provided by the French.
NUKE FRANCE- supermanred, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1If I knew you in real life, I would lend you a few history books. But since I don't, please keep spewing your pseudo-history it is very entertaining to read, kind of like going to the freak show.
- ibeandy, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Any number of these arguements could be applied to any number of 1st world countries. And as for your nuclear reactor/terrorist paranoia spiel, well if you really believe this then theres no point in me bothering talking to you.
- OwdenBowden, on 03/31/2008, -2/+1Pseudo-history? Are you kidding me? It is 100% fact. And as for your history books - when were they published? Who published them? What was the writers political affiliation when they were writing the text? You see - Not everything you read today is TRUE. We have a lot of people that like to put their own touches on things and then pass them off to people like you Supermanred - who eat it up and ask for more. They are doing it with Inteligent Design and others. So next time know more about the books your reading before swearing upon them - I bet you will find that you have been hoodwinked.
- ibeandy, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Conflating ID with this sort of thing only makes you look more paranoid I'm afraid.
- OwdenBowden, on 03/31/2008, -2/+1Like always - the French got involved in the American Revolutionary war of Independence for their own benefit. Greetinx Ste! - TempestStorm, on 03/31/2008, -4/+53/fail
- Craftybadger, on 03/31/2008, -4/+93That looks ridiculous.
- Aokitsune, on 03/31/2008, -1/+6Agreed. Leave it the hell alone (at least the Eiffel Tower Management aren't actually looking for design proposals to change it)
- joe57spike, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4Many people thought the original tower looked ridiculous when it was first built in the 1880s, calling it an eyesore.
- Ndiggnation, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1"A scar on the face of paris" it was apparently said. Again quoted by Bezu Fache in the DaVinci Code when speaking of the Louvre Pyramid.

- bightchee, on 03/31/2008, -3/+6I don't believe it will ever happen. Safe and fast egress isn't possible. They can fill up the top but in an emergency they could never get that larger number of people down fast enough.
- XenonBG, on 03/31/2008, -0/+7Even now they can't get down large number of people in a short time. It takes anywhere between 15 and, say, 45 minutes, to get down by lifts. I don't know how long it takes using stairs.
- RoboRay, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4It only takes a few seconds if you jump.
- brianara3, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Note to self... bring parachute on next Eiffel tower visit.
- palehorse864, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1You guys are missing the point. Build slides into the curved legs of the towers and add inflatable slides at the bottom. Emergencies are now the most fun you've ever had in your life!

- loquax, on 03/31/2008, -2/+2Looks like the phallic symbol needs a circumcision. Leave it alone. These types of "improvements" on icons just cause more problems than what they are worth.
- weeeezzll, on 03/31/2008, -3/+2O RLY!? Care to cite some examples?
- loquax, on 03/31/2008, -1/+2One from my hometown. Vulcan statue was built back in the 1930s. Around 1970 they sought to "improve" the statue, and ended up causing more structural damage to the thing by filling the statue with concrete to provide more stability. Another one, from London, was the dismantling of the original London Bridge (which now resides in Arizona). While some may disagree with me, I think the I.M. Pei Pyramid is out place at the Louvre.(I'll admit tha I have not been there so I cannot claim this as my definite opinion). There are a few more that I am sure others will chime in with.
I am not against having additions to buildings, etc, but eventually certain things become culturally art and become culturally iconic and shouldn't (I feel0 be tampered with. We need some things that are unchanged and lasting.
On a more practical side, nobody knows if this new structure will cause damage to the underlaying structure. These large metal erections (yes, he he he) have a life of their own and move and interact with the environment in ways that are very unpredictable. The aforementioned Vulcan Statue in Birmingham experienced severe enough damage to make it a public hazard. I view this kind of thing like putting a supposedly "safe" plastic laminate on the Declaration of Independence. It is just too risky.

FTFY - tugger, on 03/31/2008, -2/+1The tower is hardly a work of art. More like an oversized electricity pylon.
In engineering terms, the tower is a terrible piece of design, and significant additional support has already been added to reduce swaying at the top. Adding this proposed monstrocity simply adds more structural problems.

- weeeezzll, on 03/31/2008, -3/+1The Eiffel Tower is not particularly beautiful. It was designed to be the tallest tower in the world, not the most beautiful. Built almost 120 years ago, it still ranks 14 on the list of tallest structures in the world.
- joe57spike, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2I disagree. Although it wasn't necessarily designed for good looks In my opinion it is beautiful. Have you ever visited it? The nightly light show is spectacular.

- fullstop102, on 03/31/2008, -3/+2Is it just me or from the images do it not look like they just want to turn it upside down. then people can visit the top floor easily (cos its at the bottom) and people that want the view have a lot of space at the top!

- celerityfm, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1The article makes it seem like this will only be temporary for the 120th anniversary- that afterward it could be removed. "In celebration of the 120th birthday of the tower, the Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel decided to restructure the public reception and access areas of the tower. The proposal of SERERO Architects aims to create a temporary horizontal extension of the third floor of the tower in order to increase the quality of the access of the public as well as experiencing the fantastic 360 degrees sight of Paris...The structure will be temporarily bolted to the slab without requiring any modification of the existing structure. "
