- garionw, on 03/05/2009, -3/+30"She recently ordered all ads removed from Yahoo Mail in countries where most users connect using low-bandwidth connections. She’s open to removing or reducing ads from wherever it’s determined that they detract or get in the way of the user experience, she said."
Whoa, thats a little crazy, but a great idea none-the-less. Although text ads (like gmail, probably would have been sufficiant) - triPzZz, on 03/04/2009, -5/+31I can't figure out why the ***** this is an article on 'MACworld'. Boggles the mind.
- zeth006, on 03/05/2009, -3/+17Most people are going to initially assume that an employee publicly stating that a competitor's product is better than her own company's comparable offering is really bad PR--especially if that employee is a CEO. Such a statement only leads to embarrassment in the form of stock market plunges and loss of customer confidence in the product or even worse, the company itself.
But a closer look at the context of the comment might actually force most of us to think again.
Alan Mulally as himself was once quoted as having referred to the Lexus (which he owns) as one of the finest cars ever made. This was said on the day the former Boeing executive was to be formally named the CEO of Ford. Many Ford employees didn’t take too kindly to his comment.
Does this mean that Mulally is constantly in bed with different businesses with little care for his company’s outlook? Not necessarily. I’d say it shows that he’s not carrying any hyper-patriot emotional baggage with him that too many UAW workers carry with them when they accuse Americans like myself of being “unpatriotic” for driving a foreign import. Rather than whining about the evil imports made in hell, Mulally likely from his experiences with the Lexus knows a good quality car when he drives one. Couple that with his experience worked at Boeing for a few decades and I’d say Mulally’s positioned to steer his company away from the pending financial difficulties in due time.
I think in the same way this shows that the CEO of Yahoo! is concerned about reviving its core businesses. I remember back in the day when Yahoo! once had a larger portion of the search market. When conducting research papers, I’d turn to www.yahoo.com and www.dogpile.com and a variety of online encyclopedia for my research. This of course, was during the dot com boom before many of these websites disappeared into insignificance. Yahoo survived the following bubble bust but it hasn’t since offered anything revolutionary. It hasn’t led the market trends through the introduction of new products. It’s been more of a follower and a poor one at that. Google as we all know has all but trumped it.
With Jerry Yang out of the picture, it’s a matter of selling off unproductive businesses and snapping up ailing companies so that Yahoo! can get access to new patents and know-how for developing new products later down the road. I wouldn’t count Yahoo! out of the picture just yet. Even though the company’s profits are tanking, it’s still a major player. Only question is whether it can reestablish its own identity and start cranking out new products. Perhaps a look into the past at other success stories might help. I for one, while not being a fanboy, enjoy seeing underdog successes. Google was one such, but now it’s become a bit too big for its own good. If there’s one success story I’d like to see, it’s Yahoo! being a comeback kid by bringing out new products to us consumers. It’s nice that many still use Yahoo! for checking stocks, but let’s see if they can do more. - JupiterSSJ4, on 03/05/2009, -0/+9yahoo had maps way before google even thought of it

- JoeCool1986, on 03/05/2009, -1/+6Google has... always been thinking.
- westyvw, on 03/05/2009, -0/+5I am not a fan of Yahoo, but competition has forced them to provide MUCH better terms of service for their API then Google has. If you are a business that wants to minimize risk and cost, developing to Yahoo's map is much more attractive.
That said, you would be better off with Open Layers and Open Street Map anyways, but you knew that right? - MScrip, on 03/05/2009, -0/+5Bird's Eye is awesome. I'll find something on a Google Map...then check Live's Bird's Eye view to get an idea of the area.
I can't tell you how many times I've looked at a Bird's Eye map to see what's near a hotel I will be staying at.
Satellite imaging is neat... but doesn't really tell you anything. All roofs look the same from space! - Hilyin, on 03/05/2009, -0/+4This guy is right sadly, and I hate Microsoft.
- donotclickjim, on 03/05/2009, -0/+4Excellent comment zeth006. I wouldn't say Yahoo! "hasn't offered anything revolutionary". I could be mistaken but I think they were one of the first to take online maps to a more interactive level (mapquest being one of the first if not the first). Also, again I could be mistaken, but didn't Yahoo! come out with Yahoo personal pages before igoogle? I think Bartz is speaking truth. Yahoo! is a great innovator much like MS but when it comes to the glitz, glamer, and ease of use Google is more like Mac. I'm betting that's why this article was posted on macworld!
- cactus476, on 03/05/2009, -2/+6For image maps, I actually prefer Yahoo's or MS's; they both have a better image quality and MS has Birds Eye View. But as far as actual maps and directions go, I'll stick with Google.
- Scott2, on 03/05/2009, -0/+4Finally someone I can respect is running Yahoo . . .
- sexybobo, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3I like Google weather.

- eviljolly, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3The only time I ever used Yahoo maps was on my cell phone because it was already bookmarked. I admit, their mobile version was pretty easy to use. It would remember your recent locations and let you pick from a drop down. Saves a lot of time if you're not a qwerty. At the time (about 2 years ago) I actually liked it better than Google's version.
I just use the full Google Maps application now though. - bobdigi, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3I hate it when the uninformed still use MapQuest to get their maps. Google/Microsoft/Yahoo Maps are so much better than MapQuest.
- aychseven, on 03/05/2009, -2/+5so by that logic, do you think publications should not report stories that seem outside of the scope of their title? do you also have problems with the NY Times reports on stories outside of NY?
- roxgod666, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3There goes the last female CEO we will ever see.
- rakeshishere, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3Is it same with Google Search,Gmail and the rest ?? Then i too agree
- douglasr007, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3wow
RTFA, john - bizchris, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3I'm agreeing with her, but to give credit where it's due, http://weather.yahoo.com beats the pants off of http://weather.google.com.
- johnkeils, on 03/05/2009, -0/+3This isnt a surprise....why would he use crappy software? He IS a normal human being after all...im sure he also uses Mozilla's built in google search
just like a normal, regular, everyday person - Rivetgeek, on 03/05/2009, -1/+4Streetview known prostitution points ftw

On digg, why? - Nimsim, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2I need to ass right now.
- brundlefly76, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2I agree with you 100%.
I like Google Maps better too, but I would not make that public knowledge if I were CEO of the company - that's irresponsible to shareholders and devastating to the team which works on Yahoo! Maps (If I were the marketing director for Yahoo! Maps I would hand her my resignation personally, giver her a piece of my mind and make *that* public knowledge).
I'm sure every CEO has a personal preference for some competing product, doesn't mean making it public is responsible.
Now, if she wanted to send that message down to the Yahoo! Maps team internally, that's fine. That's part of her job. - mypetridish, on 03/05/2009, -1/+3what's a Time Capsule? nah, seriously, i've heard of it but never bothered to check it out. must be something fancy from apple that people don't really need
- RichardedHarris, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2edit: I just saw this same comment up top. Man i feel like an asshat.
- warragul, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2Oh, yes. The Yahoo maps "satellite" pictures of my area are 5 years old. Compared with Google's which are only 2 years old at most.
- RichardedHarris, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2Google maps is the best
true that
DOUBLE TRUE! - Drealoth, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2The wall of shame is such a bad idea. It's demoralising, and will cause smart people to leave the company, or have the top talent shift out of these "shameful" products that need them the most. If they're interested in fixing a perceived quality gap, they should pull the product and work on it until it's better, or eliminate the product altogether.
- zmigliozzi, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2I have to agree with the Yahoo CEO as well.
- aychseven, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2word. yahoo maps is garbage, especially for my use here in Tokyo. i still can't properly geo-tag photos on flickr because of its lack of detail.
- venomoushealer, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2Because most news is liberal and its easier to find? Maybe?
- jack2454, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2"People who read this also read" wtf
- Drahkar, on 03/05/2009, -1/+3I used to prefer Mapquest, but then I started running into situations where Mapquest didn't have a road in their system and Google Maps did. So I just stopped using Mapquest.
- venomoushealer, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2Rumor has it that it's some sort of backup device, given a fancy name so that the common folk can understand. Because back up is confusing. But I could be wrong.
- waleedo, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2Nice. Me and the CEO have something in common.
- Sucka27, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1False.
- yukonblack, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1not sure why this got dugg down.
Those CEOs on Wall Street walked away with 'bonuses' during a time of recession. Only when the press got word of it did they stop. - ultrafez, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1They'd have to use a bicycle to get down those alleys - I'd rather not have 8 cameras strapped to my head, thank you very much.
- Drealoth, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1neFarious5: Ford owns Lincoln, Mercury and a fair sized chunk of Aston Martin (8% or so). There is much overlap.
