- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17I have Javascript disabled, and AJAX stops working... why? :(
What's the J in AJAX mean anyway? - wicked9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14the creator is 16 years old, back off and give him props
- EPhibian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Shoutbox + AJAX = AOL Chatroom
- phytar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I find it interesting that he re-wrote it from using the Prototype Javascript library to using jQuery:
http://jquery.com/blog/2006/08/17/yshout-real-time-chat-with-jquery/
He stated that the reason for this switch was "the file size coupled with the method chaining" together with the "intuitive syntax" of jQuery. Very cool. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I hope you're being sarcastic.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Same here: http://xperiment.programming-designs.com/ys/
- metalrock76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I made a YShout example page since the one on the site is down. http://testing.metal4rock.net/ys/
- duck1123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't see why everybody is digging him down. Sure, not having javascript kinda kills the whole AJAX idea, but shouldn't the goal be to support graceful degradation? Look at GMail. GMail is arguably one of the poster children for AJAX applications, and they offer a completely non-javascript version of their site.
I'm not saying that YShout isn't cool and all. I just don't think that phatmonkey deserved to be dugg down for his comment. - evolseven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3what method would you suggest then? with ajax you pretty much have to do some type of polling.. maybe every second is a bit too much.. but your going to have to poll the server.
- N3LDAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Yarnage
Flex uses Flash.
Flash sucks. - Yarnage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3He could use Flex which can push the data to your web browser. Checking every second is very dumb
- infernoboyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had to turn YShout due to server resources being extremely high.
- madh4tter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3oh man this is amazing! Great job with this!
- saucer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Very nice, rolled it out and voila, slick as can be.
Thanks for this.
:) - rainblood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I like it. Nice work. :)
- Darkhacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Are you implying that 16 year olds are some how worse at programming?
- jonashwing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4this is WAY slick
- N3LDAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And use what?
Refreshing frames?
Yeck, major bandwidth costs - nimrod1250, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Loooove it! It looks awesome and works amazingly. The Admin CP is very well designed. Very very very good!
- modcam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1totally insecure, my friend hacked yshout in 5 minutes, and got my password.
- N3LDAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1True, but what would you suggest?
I'm writing something similar and using 3 second polling works, but does seem to tax the server excessively - Zero1Infinity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Good job
- Killeroid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I added some css and themed YShout here : http://killeroid.com/ys/
I just basically embedded into a theme and then did some rude hacks to the css file - Eggdrop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't work??
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: jsonencode() in /home/eggdrop/public_html/chat/index.php on line 25 - k4st, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I do like this a lot, especially since it's jQuery, there is a ridiculous amount of js for what needs to be done, especially since it's jquery.
- cenarta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i don't know about you guys but that was a lot of fun
- merm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this is a really cool little app, but when I threw it up on my page it crashed my server when I had about 40 visitors using it. I'd say it is resource intensive.
- coyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It looks great U_U.
- N3LDAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's no excuse for poor programming
- hottuna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The demo on the site brought a server down. lol ... no more demo I guess
- eimmot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This shoutbox requires cookies, for those who go by the exception list in Firefox.
- quisxt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Most of the comments I've seem so far have been constructive and positive. I'd don't really see why his age matters. No matter how old (or young) he is, I'm sure he's interested in improving his software, and hearing back from his users. Why else would he submit this to Digg :)
- paltalk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11. It seems to me a "Free ad". I was blocked because I told it as demo. Interestingly everyone was routed from DIGG.
2. It has little difference from WALL, demo of SAJAX, a opensource ajax framework
http://www.modernmethod.com/sajax/sajax-0.12/php/example_wall.php - aguero1198, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I added Yshout here: http://www.teccen.edu.pe/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=65
- seattle98104, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4it stopped working after a minute, couldn't add text after about a minute on firefox 1.5.0.6 windows xp
- quisxt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Text longer than one line seems to change the size of the demo version of the shoutbox, which is a little visually jarring. It looks like it has a lot of potential, but still not quite there yet, IMO
- illego, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Nice, I'm going to try to integrate it into my site :D.
- Yarnage, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4He just wants to be on Digg's front page. This is the third time he has posted his OWN tool. Previously he had some pretty huge exploits (including XSS attacks and even the ability to enter PHP code).
This web app (if you can even call it that since it's so freakin simple) just plain sucks and it's boring. - datafirminc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4This looks pretty darn close to Google Talk. Very slick and clean!
- xrab, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1..as the digger take down yet ANOTHER site =P
Very sleek shoutbox - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3V3! - See I shouted it
- Undefined, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1the site only mentions that its compatible with php4. does anyone know if it works with php5?
- joshfraz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1it might be neat to have a shoutbox inside the comments section on digg
- GeekyGibbon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Um..I dont want to put the guy who did this, I woudlnt know how to, but I dont really get it. I mean, havnt there been chat rooms embedded in webpages for ever? Whats so revolutionary and cool? Someone fill me in.
- Dakusan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3i find the send a packet ever second to check for refreshes approach very inefficient and retarded. No wonder his server crashed the first time around...
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Yeah the submitter totally forgot to put AMAZING in the headline!
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1The only sites I've seen with shoutboxes tend to be low-traffic sites that are run as a hobby and nothing more. So based on that, I think an auto-refreshing shoutbox is fairly pointless. On higher traffic sites it'd give me a headache - if I wanted a chatroom, I'd go to a chatroom. I don't want a chatroom on a page I'm trying to read.
I'm not putting this down, anyone that releases their work for free gets a thumbsup in my opinion, I just don't think it's going to be much more use than an ordinary un-web2.0ajax shoutbox. - digitalme, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Shiny as a monkey's a-on second thought, it's just plain shiny!
- bfirsh, on 02/13/2009, -17/+10It would be far nicer if this could fall back to a static form if javascript were not enabled. Loads of people have it disabled!

What is Digg?
