- afex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19i'm guessing that syndication isn't exactly the goal of most web comics...i mean, they can't swear, they have to watch who they make fun of, and 90% of the sunday paper's audience doesn't understand what a headshot is.
- dukeofurl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Let me be the first to say in jest:
http://www.dieselsweeties.com/shirts/yousoldout/ - deadzebra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The big deal isn't the syndication per se, but the terms of which he was able to secure. He maintains his copyright, most merchandising rights, ability to produce comics online without any sort of oversight or censorship, etc. In most cases a syndication deal means you are owned, but not this time.
It's a new kind of approach for the syndication business which hopefully points to good things for independent creators in the future. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Which is why penny arcade is such a flop.
What's that? They're so huge, they run one of the biggest gaming conferences in the country?
Bit more than you can say for any offline comic, eh? - WeeklyGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Seriously, this is CRA-ZAY
Does anyone else know of a comic on the web who has made the transition to syndicates? - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Are they going to have to tone it down at all? I haven't read it in a while, but last I recall, it was a little racier than Peanuts. Huge step though.. that's awesome.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You may not like it, but millions of people obviously love it.
Otherwise strips like PA and Dilbert would have died years ago.
Believe it or not, there are people in the world other than yourself, and they happen to find things funny that you don't.
And, *****, anything's funnier than half the ***** in the paper anyway. Cathy? Family Circus? The last 10 years of Garfield? You think PA is bad... - modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6DS is the cats ass. I'm glad we get to have more DS. I'm not sure it will translate well to a mainstream audience, but all the same it should be good.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7They hardly invented it. In fact, it's really a tribute to the days of 8-bit, 1mhz computing.
e.g., Habitat. A 1986 Commodore 64 online service.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habitat_%28video_game%29
Or Maniac Mansion, for that matter. - Sushiman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There is a huge write-up in the news section that explains everything.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Kevin and Kell did, back in the day. Space Moose should have.
- RegalBegal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6PBF!
- Straudlater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Agreed. The Perry Bible Fellowship = best. Although, I think some publications (including Maxim) already run it.
- MasterGrief, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hey, whats wrong with Ctrl-Alt-Delete? I love that comic!
Seriously, what don't you like about it? - BevansDesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I sure hope that people won't look at this in the paper and think that ALL webcomics are pixelly like that.
But anyway, I hope this works out and makes papers consider webcomics more seriously, because there are tons of great webcomics, and printcomics are so horribly lame. Lame art, lame characters, lame jokes. It's like they pick the ones that evoke the least amount of emotion in the reader. You say "I am going to read this comic", then you do, then you say "I have read this comic" and go sort your stamps. - V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Scott Kurtz of PVP tried to go the paper syndicated route a while ago announcing that the world of old-school comics in syndication was dead and offering PVP for free to any paper that wanted it. Only like one small paper picked up PVP to my knowledge and shortly dropped it.
- rinkjustice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Diesel Sweeties - what a fun comic. It's got a special place in my heart because I was allowed to publish the comic in my website hardcoreLinux.com (which has since been taken over and now a viagara advertisment). Good times.
- chix0r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6 this is good news.
DS is the only webcomic I can skip viewing for a whole year and then magically return to it and still find it hilarious, no corny story lines, just geeky jokes, it's perfect. - rockintom99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Aparently, PvP was syndicated too. I've yet to see it in a newspaper, though.
- Chestnut3499, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Man, this has me psyched! I've been reading this comic for a year or so and I freakin' love it. Good luck to them!
- mdweaver7485, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I abosolutely love DS, will the usage policy remain the same? I've bought shirts and the comic is part of my daily life.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, but those programs had to do it, since they were on such limited hardware. In this case, it's now a stylistic choice.
- vaaaska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yay for rstevens!
- spankybumbum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Just a minor clarification, Space Moose originated in print, not on the web. Although it was never syndicated as far as I know.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Moose
I have been offended on more than one occasion by a Space Moose comic:
http://www.hackcanada.com/canadian/zines/spacemoose/take_back.gif - SgtCrispy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Awesome! Too bad I'll never see a paper running the strip around here.
Great news though. - jccalhoun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, and those asking if any other web comic has gone on to be in newspapers, PvP tried to give away his strip to newspapers for free basically as advertizing. I'm not sure if that ever went anywhere or not
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why do the women look so butch?
- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://pbfcomics.com/
Best comic ever... - lemieuxster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.dieselsweeties.com/archive.php?s=1557 this one mentions digg.
- WeeklyGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think it did. Plus, he was just giving away the rights, he wasn't signed on by a big syndicate.
- codethumper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's because of of them is male! The character on the right is "Metal Steve."
- Lardquake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like Gary Larson is not a geek.
- khafra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm astounded they made it, instead of some bland mass-appeal attempt like Sluggy or Sinfest. Not that I don't still read Sluggy...
- phoofy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@ merreborn
While it's true that DS didn't "invent" the 8-bit pixelated look, back then, things like Habitat or Maniac Mansion didn't really have a choice about looking pixelated. ;-) - AXNJAXN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Torpor is my hero.
- Sushiman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I don't think anyone commenting so far has read the article... It answers all the questions asked.
- jccalhoun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Good for him. I used to be a dedicated reader. I quit reading about the time he moved away from the 4 panel layout. However, I've still got the first collection he did, a bunch of hist shirts and stuff from the clango club. Time to hit up ebay! (just kidding)
- gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2There is no article perse, its just a link to the homepage.
- kdbarto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What about the Devils Panties? Great Web Comic, should be in the Papers. Never will be. Jen does a great job and should have a wider audience.
- jrobbfed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'll take Dinosaur Comics over this anyday.
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"I don't know why they don't take Penny Arcade or Ctrl-Alt-Del instead of this stupid comic."
See the comment immediately above yours. I don't read PA, but CAD does tend to throw in the profanity here and there. More importantly, both of these are gamer-oriented comics, and the newspapers are primarily interested in serving the mainstream. If it weren't for those two problems, I'd be all about seeing Sluggy in the paper. Its combination of humor and quality storytelling is truly unique.
Edit: Ok, this one has the profanity as well (http://www.dieselsweeties.com/archive.php?s=8). I expect they'll censor it. - frekir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If I remember correctly Little-Gamers ran in a Danish newspaper.
- jferraro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree. I do not enjoy this comic. It reminds me of janeane garofalo's dull 90's humor. Very Dated.
- AgentofId, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Penny-Arcade is published in EGM every month :)
- JrGhoull, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i've never even heard of this thing...and isnt penny arcade like THE top or one of the top most successful comics on line?
- porkstacker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Sorry, what I meant to say (better mention it now, since I’ve been unlawfully dugg down for unintentionally making errors in context) was that the illustrator of Diesel Sweeties employed the original pixelated look for a comic strip. Before Diesel Sweeties I hadn’t seen it done before. And yes, although I have been using computers since 1978 it could be possible that I missed out on the Commodore craze since I was using my Atari 800 instead at the time.
- maxxgrimmm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0NICE !! Been reading this on and off for a couple of years.. Kudos and much success in the future
- Zerocool82, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Not really funny. It's ok. But I like Sinfest.net
- GhostToon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I don't really get the jokes or like the comic but as an aspiring cartoonist my self this news is good.
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5I can tell you why not Ctrl-Alt-Del.
Not only is it crap, but they'd have to talk to him to set things up. -
