- jay314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These are all great in terms of graphic design, and great if you want flashy intros and animation and quirky navigation. This type of site is good for one-visit product sites or graphic design portfolios, but there is no way one of these would be a weekly visit for me.
There are a few common rules that make people ignore websites: You have to disable your popup blocker to see content. You have to download a plugin you don't have. You have to search for the "disable audio" button.
The graphic designer in me loves sites like these, but for the most part they are TERRIBLE web design. - Dracos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Posts like this make me want to anti-digg.
This is not showing off web design, its showing off *graphic design*. Of the 8 sites I went to, 3 had splash pages (bad web design), 1 had graphics for text (bad web design), 7 had flash (bad web design), 2 had flash menus (worse web design).
The one site I went to that didn't exhibit any of this validates (as XHTML 1.1, no less), and the only thing wrong there is some semantics with the header tags.
There should be a tax for putting unnecessary flash on a site. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not so much great web design as much as great graphic design in my opinion. But very cool looking stuff.
- Xopl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok, let me just say that all of these designers can create something prettier than I ever could. With that out of the way...
These are some of the worst web sites I've ever seen. They throw usability and accessibility to the wind. They aren't even that fresh of designs. There are hundreds of websites out there that are both prettier and easier to use. Real professionals can make a website that is stunning while still being accessible and usable. I will reiterate what several other people have said: csszengarden has hundreds of gorgeous designs, most of which are designed around the principles of standards compliance, accessibility, and usability. - fintan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Creme is more classy you douche
- saichele, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1flash is like crack - immediate 'bang' that's quick to wear off. I thought some of the design concepts were gorgeous and well-executed, but not necessarily in the context of the web (who actually wants to take the time to read these sites?!) - and, to be honest, I'm pretty tired of the whole 'look how we can use flash to animate the loading of the site.. oooh. aaaah. ' or the stereotypical clinky/click sounds of the mouse-over menu items... or the choice of either 'hipper than thou' or 'more serene than thou' music. nuff said.
- seitanguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I guess its some good FLASH design. Every single site I clicked on had flash. http://www.csszengarden.com has better designs done entirely in XHTML and CSS. All code validates, and NO CLOSED PLUG-INS.
- Heilemann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shouldn't that have been cream and not creme?... Sounds... Ugh!
- DumbDigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0newezra nice site!
- skidooer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Every example I visited looked okay, but the usability was terrible. There is more to web design than looking good.
- BushCheney08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds like more than a few of you have never hung around an art school before. This sort of thing is generally all you get out of those students.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is what happens when designers have only impressing each other in mind rather than usability and the end user. All but a couple of these examples are beautiful yet inneffective.
Good design doesn't put form over function. - a99tandem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why such a suggestive name????????????
- samKreuzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great websites!
- hao2lian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about appreciating these sites for something besides "no Flash, validate, blind people with half-ears and green thighs must be able to view"? How about for the artistic ability? It's not that hard to conceded that, hey, some of these websites are pretty.
- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oooo.....purdy...
- Mongoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice.
- jay314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Notice how they're categorized and searchable by color scheme? That's pretty clever.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sorry its good FLASH not good web design. No.
- marbant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1at least there should have been a small note that 95% of the sites originated at http://screenspire.com
... - osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0huh... just one thing: never ever ever ever ever make a site that loads up music without asking!
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the "Rumours About Angels" site... positively evil
- GhettoCash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice designs. It gives you more ideas, but it doesn't say much of how they have done the thing.
- detrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow... just wow. Some...no, all of these designs are amazing.
- planticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great link, I digg it.
- quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Like BeatYouWithShoe said, these aren't good websites, they are more like good art projects. If Digg looked like one of these sites, with Flash and plugins and animations -- I'd never come back.
- selfdisplaced, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'd have to say that most of these are horrible. very hard to use, some load slowly, and are just an eyesore. and navigation is pretty bad as well...for example, the Andy Titus one, is horrible to navigate once you are at one of the companies. Funky Animals, didn't even load. Puppy Lab looks like a LiveJournal. I'm sorry I just don't see any of these as really being great site designs or even insparational, i wouldn't want my site to look anything like these.
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nothing really special on their list. no digg.
- gatorsrule21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like http://www.cssimport.com the best
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i would say that these sites are ok, but they certainly aren't the best the web has to offer.
- ernesthoffmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0another list
http://ehoffmann.blogsome.com/2005/11/07/cool-flash-sites/ - tagawa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This site reminds me of cssreboot.com. These sites are a great source of inspiration not for website design as a whole, but for finding that elusive font or the perfect colour combination. Having said that, content and usability should come first, without a doubt. Look at digg.
- step, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0please, simply enjoy them as good photoshop layouts. There are some pretty good websites, very nice layouts, good use of colors and illustration, at least.
Now, if you're looking for usability, web standards, etc, any website found at www.alistapart.com or www.csszengarden.com does the job.
whats the prejudice with flash? Can't you folks enjoy a good flash site, like www.comcastic.com? yes, its suposed to be entertainment, not contend driven ( despite all the xml being used in it more and more) - treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is it with all these listed sites being predominantly flash?
- humfy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lots to be found here as well, for anyone int'rested:
http://www.boese.net/temporaer/linx/ - andellmoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@a99tandem
suggestive titles are more fun - tduncn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used to do this kind of stuff until I started to pay attention to what people really think about it. Flash is too gimmicky, context and useability is king, even if the site looks like crap. The more flashy it is, the more distracting it is, and you all of a sudden have ADD and dont care what button you push next, just as long as you try them all out real quick to see what pops up next. Someone hit the nail on the head though when they said these peole try to impress other flash deisngers more than anyone else. Why? Who knows, probably because they are the only ones who can appreciate the time and work that goes into it and recognize technical ability, and even pick up a new idea or two for thier own site.
- mathias5150, on 02/25/2009, -0/+0Good designs. What do you think of the designs on this site: http://start.siteowner.biz
- gus_welter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't see what was so great or inspiring about a lot of those sites, I'm sorry to say. Where's my undigg button!? :)
- eemerh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice site newezra. I like how you give the option of the non-flash site as well.
- blueangel5383, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dream come true... *drool*
- MikeZila, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A lot of these are just Flash. That's not exactly "web" design.
- ChrisW75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm. Most of the sites on the first page, I gave up on. I was interested to find out what the sites were about, but ultimately it was difficult to find out about the company that the site was for.
Didn't like them, low usability index. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0accessiblity ftw. Overdesigned, LOOK MOM I CAN USE CSS, whats with these portal sites showcasing these css flash, small text *****? Content is king. What's with these port sites? There are about 500 having the same thing. People need to learn that the webdesign isn't everything. Web Development is where its at! All the web guys can agree with me. If you can manage huge databases for people to access and manipulate and still look pretty, thats webdesign. That's interior design.
- newezra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I digg it. Especially since my site's in the list - http://www.newezra.com.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0world 2.0 won't have flash, it will be a much better world
(jeez, for the first time i had a 'no mispellings found ;)' )
p.s.
it's nice, it tells you that there are no mispellings found, but if you try to check spelling and the box has the word 'mispellings' on it, it won't validate - wildjohn999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Bleah! Flash makes my eyes (and ears) hurt. Do it in CSS and html and I will be impressed.
As one poster said http://www.csszengarden.com is a great site to see real web development. - catchermag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Flashterbation. Horrible.
