VW Golf GTI W12 650 Concept (With Video!)
autoblog.com — At the Worthersee 2007 meet for VW enthusiasts, Volkswagon pulled the wraps off the GTI W12 650 concept. A 6.0L biturbo 12 cylinder sits behind the front seats, dishing 650 horses to the rear wheels. Top speed is said to be over 200 mph, and it goes from 0-62 in 3.7 seconds. Video of its public debut is included.

- domokunt, on 10/11/2007, -15/+3...bears as much resemblance to a golf as a saturn 5 rocket though. I though the R36 was insane.
- ejsv, on 10/21/2007, -13/+12Looks Awesome!!!
- acex23, on 10/11/2007, -18/+8Good luck going over a speedbump in that.
- corevette, on 10/11/2007, -17/+1just because you added "(with Video!)" doesn't mean you should put it in the technology section, i mean, there is a video section for digg
- kutateli, on 10/11/2007, -21/+4worst rims ever.
- Ajjah, on 10/11/2007, -29/+3But... it's still a GOLF!
- ChromaVita, on 10/11/2007, -16/+1I agree with Kutateli.
They should spin... - DiggChainey, on 10/11/2007, -13/+3That is cool, I'd much rather have the minibus with solar panels.
Video Here http://xoinks.com/mov/view_video.php?viewkey=256d98d3873024aeb0cc - computergod, on 10/11/2007, -15/+1The Hyabusa one from yesterday was cooler. It had video too. Not video of some guy speaking in a language I can't understand for the vast majority of the video, then finally getting to see it not move. Don't know why they left a big hole in the front if it has side ports for the radiator either, not to mention the rims.
I want video of this thing running, not some guy I don't understand talking about it. - p0und, on 10/21/2007, -10/+28queue everyone complaining about a big engine, gas guzzling car....
oh wait, its not made by gm or ford so its ok. - panique, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2meh. rear wheel drive

Maybe that is because he was speaking German?
Though even for me as a native speaker it was hard to understand him. - frizzipazzi, on 10/21/2007, -6/+4Looks A LOT like the Renault clio V6 (3000cc V6 255 bhp)

- jesse9300, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1PRETTY SWEET. VERY AGGRESSIVE STYLING. 650 HORSES IS SERIOUS STUFF. LOVE IT. I LOVE THE WIDE WHEEL BASE CALLING FOR FENDER FLAIRS. I BET THIS THING HAULS ASS. ARE THEY SERIOUSLY GOING TO PUT INTO PRODUCTION?? IF THE R32 OF LAST MODEL WAS $32K THEN WHAT WOULD THIS RUN YOU?
ALL IN ALL, I BET THE ENGINEERS AND DESIGNERS ARE VERY PROUD OF THIS ONE.
- Bleezy, on 10/21/2007, -5/+7Dang, I want one!
- skyshock21, on 10/21/2007, -9/+28Oh SNAP! We just Unpimped your Auto!
- unfinite, on 10/21/2007, -22/+2Yeah, it's really ugly. Rims are way too big and those side scoops are hideous.
- darkciti, on 10/21/2007, -5/+22@skyshock
I love all these wannabe's that think they can better engineer their cars than the manufacturers (or the professional tuners). Learn before just "bolting crap on".
Here's a tip: Putting a 40 pound rear wing on the trunk of your Civic _will not make your car faster_. Your car is front wheel drive, so you don't have to worry about keeping your rear wheels on the ground. Even if your Civic was rear wheel drive, it doesn't have enough power to spin the wheels, so a rear wing will do nothing but add more weight to your car and _make it slower_ (and make your trunk heavier to open).
Also adding a catback exhaust to your little car _might_ give you a few more horsepower, but it will also make it _impossible_ for you to pick up my daughter discretely. I will know when your car is anywhere near my neighborhood, never-the-less my home.
Im in ur carz, hearin ur dumb modz, keepin you from my girlz. - unfinite, on 10/21/2007, -9/+48Do people actually like the design of this concept then?
Yes [Digg up]
No [Digg down] - jhnewt, on 10/21/2007, -3/+2@darkciti
Although I generally agree with your comment, you clearly don't know what a spoiler is for.
- RidgeWalker76, on 10/21/2007, -2/+24I dugg it, but I don't know why people get all excited about concept vehicles that will never make it to the marketplace. It exists, someone will own it. The owner will probably rarely drive it, and just display as apart of a large collection of awesome but rarely driven super vehicles.

- vsaint, on 10/11/2007, -13/+5I'm tired of seeing all these overpowered cars that will never make it into production. How about instead of brute forcing their way to achieve speed, the manufacturers start making lighter, better handling cars.

- soccerboi00, on 10/11/2007, -13/+4I guarantee you that once up in the higher gears, this car would win. The Corvette is designed for a better 0-60 time, while Volkswagens are designed for better performance in the higher gears. My 96 Golf is faster than cars with a faster 0-60 time once you get up to around 60mph.
- Slovenian6474, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Which one is in production?

- bucky8396, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0this car would only appeal to people who are in watercooled VWs that is all there is a video but nothing crazy its just an advertisement on volkswagen.de
- MoofTheStoof, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7Maybe I've been watching too much Voyager and DS9, recently, but it looks a lot like a Starfleet shuttle to me.

- Wolfie351, on 10/21/2007, -5/+43Why do I always get nervous when someone is speaking German on stage in front of a cheering crowd?
- eamonchaney, on 10/11/2007, -19/+6Wow!! Man that car is sweet. I would drive the $hit out of that car, that is until it breaks......
Don't dig me down for hating on VW, I am just speaking from experience.- cyclox, on 10/11/2007, -12/+2I agree. VWs are awesome and this car is amazing, but they do fall apart pretty quick. Even with that said, I have owned my share of VWs and would take this car in a heartbeat.
- 13B1303, on 10/11/2007, -12/+3I have 2 dubs, I love em, but I will admit that if you are not willing and able to do the wrenching yourself they are terrible to keep together.
- gab00n, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17I drive a VW and have never had any trouble, maybe you just suck at driving?
- soccerboi00, on 10/11/2007, -6/+9Same here, my Volkswagen has had almost no problems. Tough as hell too, I've hit a curb at 15mph and I drove away from it and never had to go to a repair shop, but my dad hit a curb in an Oldsmobile Alero at 7-8mph and the wheel was so bent you couldn't even drive it.
- 13B1303, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I got in my VW after typing my previous post... the automatic seatbelt went bananas and my battery will probably be dead in the morning. It has nothing to do with driving, it has to do with good German beer. Check the reliability ratings MKIII and MKIV are... not so good. My Beetle is almost indestructible, it's failings come in when I try to push 2 and 3 times the original power through the drivetrain and expect it to hold together.
- jesse9300, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@13B1303
first of all, you own a beetle, thats not gay. and secondly, of course your car will fall apart if you try to push 2 to 3 times the power the drive train is engineered to handle. this concept however i am certain has been designed to perform under 650 hp at the wheels. you dont think they considered beefing up the drive train, suspension, coolant systems, etc.
im sure you have had your fair share problems with your entry level beetle, but thats bc it is an entry level beetle. you get what you pay for. - eamonchaney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1First off I have a turbo bug and I love it. The thing moves through traffic like a hot knife through butter. It is the most comfortable car I have ever owned. It really needs help in the cup holder area, but I have ways to work around that.
But if it's not the aluminum head cracking for no reason(X1), or the mass airflow sensor dying every 6 months(X3), or the fuel pump going out(X1), or the gas take cover release mechanism seizing(X1), or the inter-cooler springing a leak(X1), one of the random little air hoses coming loose and taking all my power until I dig in there and find that one hose behind the block that I couldn't quite see...... And right now, after I just spent over $1600 to fix the inter-cooler(which took over a month at the dealership), now the ***** immobilizer won't let me start my goddamn car!!!!!! I can't afford to take it back to the damn shop!!!
/end rant
I love my bug, but it has problems.
- cyclox, on 10/11/2007, -12/+2I agree. VWs are awesome and this car is amazing, but they do fall apart pretty quick. Even with that said, I have owned my share of VWs and would take this car in a heartbeat.
- darkamster07, on 10/21/2007, -2/+5Let me just say: that is one hot looking car, I would love to own one. This is actually the first time in a while when I thought the concept actually looked good, hope they don't ***** it up.
- enorganik, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Looks amazing. The GTI has proved itself of late but this is a bit much.
- p0und, on 10/21/2007, -2/+2i think it looks like some kind of futuristic moon buggy
- 13B1303, on 10/21/2007, -5/+2It's no 900hp awd Dahlback golf but I do like it. http://www.rsportscars.com/eng/cars/golf_dahlback.asp
- jesse9300, on 10/21/2007, -1/+1well that is insane
- pencilneck, on 10/21/2007, -1/+20I can only hope that Top Gear is allowed to review that car.
- Buttsexatron, on 10/11/2007, -32/+3My girlfriend says that this car looks like a cute little gay midget, with associated short man's syndrome and something to prove!
I agree. It's lame, but I'm sure the VW crowd here will bury this remark shortly in an effort to hide their circle jerk mentality that VW cars rule. Like I care.- PlasticLack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I think you have to calm down with all the psychoanalysis for a second.
- agarc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12You're getting buried because of your rude, offensive comments that contribute nothing to this thread. Nobody cares what you or your bigoted girlfriend have to say.

As a previous owner, it's awesome to see what can be done with this version of the Golf. The MKVI should be even better. - mouthster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20I think your "girlfriend" (a.k.a hairy palm) talks too much.
- 87ex, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Your name is buttsexatron... stop making rude comments that simply bash people and add nothing to the digg, and go take it in the butt like your name implies.

- emanresu1978, on 10/21/2007, -5/+4If someone is interested in a car similar to this that you can actually buy, then they should check out a VW R32 Twin Turbo. The VW R32 TT is actually faster than this car. It will cost you around $50,000-60,000.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXAgnhJKbQY
http://hpamotorsports.com/products_turbo_twin.htm
http://www.freedman.net/hpa.html- weiran, on 10/21/2007, -2/+6It's not faster, it's slightly faster to 0-60 because it has AWD and is much lighter. The W12 would absolutely hammer a V6 once the cars are moving (e.g. most situations).
- nycmac247, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2
call me when it's electric - noeljohnhoward, on 10/21/2007, -3/+3VW is really going crazy with their R32's, the RGTI and now this! its ridiculous mannnnnn.

- Bardak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10what are you talking about It's one of the best looking hatchbacks
- aluminumpork, on 10/21/2007, -2/+3There is just something so incredibly awesome about a 650hp Golf. SO MUCH POWER, SUCH A LITTLE PACKAGE. Unfortunately, I doubt anything more than the crazy ass body styling will make it to production, if anything. There'll probably be some GTi trim with similar styling and a 2.0T. Boo... Hisss....
On the gas consumption front, c'mon... it's a concept, there's only ONE of these. There's no way in hell this will be going into production. VDubbers really are green :-D

- masterd1253, on 10/21/2007, -3/+1is it me or do the additional pictures look like they were taken in gran turismo?
- michaelb1, on 10/21/2007, -2/+4Makes my new GTi with its turbo 4cyl look puny.
- xmlionheart, on 10/21/2007, -6/+1Am I the only one who can clearly see how ugly this thing is? It's totally impractical given how low it hovers, and looks like a snug compact was raped by a 1997 Mustang.
- aluminumpork, on 10/21/2007, -1/+4It's not -nearly- as low as a lot of VWs I know of. A person who could afford this (if even put into production) is not going to care about practicality. They'll have their Cayenne to fall back on or their Touareg.
- TheGuruStud, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1pretty sad. New GTR will do 0-60 in what - 3.8 secs and that's with 475-500 BHP TT V6. When will these morons learn, v10s and 12s suck ass.
- saggygrandma, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1fan of the turbo lag are we?
- weiran, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1You obviously don't know about cars and engines. The V6 TT is not faster, it's slightly faster to 0-60 because it has AWD and is much lighter. The W12 would absolutely hammer a V6 once the cars are moving (e.g. most situations).
- TheTankengine, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2It doesn't have a v10 or 12, its a W12.
Its a concept car, give it some slack. No need to be a big douchenozzle about it.
- Crunchbox, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0Dude wtf?? 650hp w12 and an auto. transmission? Why not make it a 6speed manual, save 2 grand and sell it to gen. pop.
- ijustam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1It's most likely a form of DSG, which is superior to a conventional manual in regards to speed, which is what you want in a race car.
- weiran, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2It's definatly DSG, VW probably don't have a manual box that can handle that kind of power, but their DSG boxes are very strong.
- Aliarse, on 10/21/2007, -5/+1Looks like a Polo with a body kit, not a Golf.
- iMoth, on 10/21/2007, -3/+8volkswagen for life.

- nimicohgr, on 10/21/2007, -6/+1The Golf has officially been bumped off the top 5 gayest cars to #6.
- osbjmg, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1Hmm, understeer anyone? Who wants that much weight up front?
- McGrude, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4It's a mid engine, not front.
- prammy, on 10/21/2007, -2/+1The sexiness of the Golf + the sexiness of the Renault 5 Turbo. Sweet.
- Vo0Ds, on 10/21/2007, -1/+3HARDON.
- algo, on 10/21/2007, -4/+1sexy yes, practical no.
i hope they never release it or anything like it because at the end of the day it's just a Golf and people shouldn't spend that much on a Golf.
0 to 200 in 5 Gallons ftw though.. - poison101, on 10/21/2007, -5/+0i dont think its that good, id prefer the new Honda Civic type R, its waay more futuristic than the old honda civic, the new Golf is just an old golf that found its way into a crappy pimp my ride garage.
- Hades32, on 10/21/2007, -4/+1Is it so hard to spell Wörthersee(or at least Woerthersee) and Volkswagen?
- cyzum, on 10/21/2007, -6/+3Wow, I wonder if the window regulators will stay in place while it's cruising at 200mph. Oh even better, maybe they won't actually need the coilpack replaced. OOOOh even better, when its blasting off and hitting 0-60 in 3.2 seconds, if the oil pump will explode and need to be replaced. Maybe this one will come with BBC wheels that don't rust a week after you buy the car, or Recaro racing seats where the hip bolsters don't break. Could you imagine if the brake lights switch on this one actually works!? Wow!
VW = Garbage. Worst car purchase I ever made was a 2002 VW GTI 337. - jkostantos, on 10/21/2007, -3/+1typical VW marketing.. never show the inside of the car.. find me one commercial where VW exposes whats inside.
- nicc, on 10/21/2007, -1/+2other than the "unpimp" commercials, every VW commercial I've ever seen shows the interior.
- darkcrimson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I don't get this comment?
VW has a "dash stroker" following because the interiors are so nice. Basically the rule of thumb with VW is: yes, sometimes stuff breaks mechanically but since it looks better than most $50k cars by other manufacturers inside its worth forking over the $100/hour repair bill.
- DCesque, on 10/21/2007, -2/+1I'd hit it.
- nicc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1one thing Ive noticed from everyone that seems to have had issues with their recent (say last 10 years or so) VWs is that they are almost always the Mexican made models, instead of the German made models.
I'm not knocking Mexico by any means, but obviously there is something different in the manufacturing process between the two. - ateoto, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"This is a pure show car, so don't go running to your VW dealer waving around a fistful of cash. He won't be able to help you."
I'm relieved, otherwise my bank account would have been sad. - zmigliozzi, on 10/21/2007, -0/+2V-Dub representing Deutschland.
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I'd just like to take apart that motor to see how it's designed. I believe it's actually a double-V configuration rather than a W, so it's basically like two V style engines connected together at the same crank shaft.
