Underwater In Photoshop (Great Video Tutorial)
metacafe.com — This is a sped-up demo of how to create an underwater scene using Photoshop without the aid of any images from the net.
- 1419 diggs
- digg it
- anitab83, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2This is pretty cool, although I think my photoshop skills are lacking to a point where I couldn't even do this ;-)
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17I'd rather find clip art of a real ocean. The final result was mediocre, imho.
- gxcdesign, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7No writeup and what's with these songs they always pick? Guy must play too much Guitar Hero 2
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23This tutorial is extremely worthless. You can't follow anything of what the guy is doing in the video because it's way too fast, and even if it was slower, it's often difficult to see what tools and options he's picking and using anyway. Whoever did this wasted their time to make this video and should've written an illustrated text tutorial instead.
But of course this is bound to get hundreds of diggs. People on this site tend to digg any photoshop tutorials, no matter how ***** they are. Reminds me of the previously front-paged link to a "tutorial" about removing objects from a photograph, which amounted to nothing more than extremely basic tips for how to use the Clone Stamp tool ( http://digg.com/design/Photoshop_Removing_Powerlines ). - digitalunltd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13It would have been nice if he included a write up but to a person who is experienced with PS it is useful as is. I actually prefer looking at this then reading or hearing a step by step - as its much faster.
He creates 4 layers.
# Bottom layer is simply a gradient (blue/dark blue)
# 2nd layer is filter>clouds then set mode to overlay, then adjust opacity, erase as needed.
# 3rd layer is filter>clouds then filter>ripple then edit>distort>perspective then set layer mode to color burn then adjust opacity. Then create a selection and inverse it. Then feather the selection. Then hit delete.
# 4th layer is a selection, then invert it, then feather it, then do a white gradient, then set layer mode to color burn? then adjust opacity and erase as needed.
Note: Fore those who are saying this video is worthless: I wrote this step by step from memory after watching the video once and with out opening photoshop, it might not be perfect but it should be close. I understand most people wouldn't be able to do this/ enjoy this tutorial but do realize for some people this is a good tutorial. It is presented at the perfect speed (not to slow) and with out annoying/slow commentary. But yeah the music sucked. - ozziedog, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Crap tutorial that makes noobes think it takes seconds to do everything. Thanks. I do this for a living and the last thing I need is someone thinking it takes no time to do it (even if it does). If you need a tutorial to tell you how to do something like that, then you should not be doing Photoshop.
- digitalunltd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8ozziedog, I completly disagree.
"Crap tutorial that makes noobes think it takes seconds to do everything. Thanks. I do this for a living and the last thing I need is someone thinking it takes no time to do it (even if it does)."
Stop whining, if some one thinks PS/graphic design is easy let them try... But dont bitch.
"If you need a tutorial to tell you how to do something like that, then you should not be doing Photoshop."
Thats complete BS, I found this tutorial insightful in a number of ways. I guess that means Im a moron. But I guess we can't all be as 1337 as you ozzidog. - ChippyLasticko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1On the contrary, ilyag, if you had an average working knowledge of Photoshop, you would see exactly what he's doing in the video.
I'm an amateur Photoshop user, and I had no trouble understanding the steps he took. (well whoppie for me, right? Anyway ...) - Midnightbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everybody's a beginner sometime, so even if you think the Clone Tool is a basic thing, it's probably news to somebody. Also, even though I've been using Photoshop professionally for years, it's nice to see how somebody else does things; it gives me insight on new, potentially better, ways to do the same old things.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17I'd rather find clip art of a real ocean. The final result was mediocre, imho.
- will-rom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Not much of a tutorial if you ask me. More of a hey look what I can do in fast forward.
- xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Even if it isn't a conventional tutorial I still learned a lot from it. I also find it pleasant to watch really talented people do something with such ease in their field.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3webtech really loves them photoshops.
- datsclark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Why did these video tutorials become popular? They are mostly useless without a writeup.
- planckstudios, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Agreed - burried as Lame. Horribly small resolution and no written documentation at that speed is useless.
- nhassan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i agree. i think people would like it to know how to do that, other than just sit there and watch someone do it
- planckstudios, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It is not a tutorial - a tutorial is educational - this is a piece of *****.
- heavyal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Everyone starts somewhere, and the vast majority of people are more comfortable following visual directions than they are written ones - take the adoption of Linux, most of the problem lies in the fact that much of what makes it really powerful is only available via the command line and various scripting tools, point and click is more now an option than it ever was but for serious work the command line is still king. The same is true for these PS tutorials. Certainly there are those of us who would prefer a line by line explanation but then again someone with a good eye for detail can also easily follow what this person has done and duplicate it just as quickly.
It's all a matter of different peoples approach to the subject.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7that was a total waste of time. He says nothing and all the text is too small to even see what's going on.
lame.- tonyhartfield, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I've been using photoshop for a couple of years so it was pretty easy to see what he was doing, it would be nice if a normal tutorial was available for beginners though
- Llanowar, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Honestly... Photoshop tutorials on digg should become a criminal offence...
- strangehold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd probably spend more time slowing the video down just so I'd know exactly what's going on than actually making the image.
- funkydude101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I understood what he was doing and I like seeing it sped up although the crappy lack of resolution might be a pain in the ass because I have to guess what filter he's using.
I like sped up photoshop 'tutorials' like this. I doubt I'll ever use an underwater scene though. - kjartan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Primus!
- cmscott, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Recently, they were 22nd on a list of Worst Bands of All Time by Blender Magazine.
Now I can see why.
- cmscott, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Recently, they were 22nd on a list of Worst Bands of All Time by Blender Magazine.
- adamsucks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What's the point of making a low quality, fast motion tutorial? Yeah, for those of us very familiar with Photoshop it's easy to see what he's doing.. but for people just learning it's virtually useless.
I do really like the effect created in this video, but for being a tutorial as the title says.. it's junk. - Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Dugg for primus
- neckfire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yECH! Looks bad.
- ampersand2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are plenty of other tutorials out there that have been around for a while that look much better than this.
It's really not that hard...and in my opinion, underwater scenes are a lot more fun to do with 3D Max...they also look better. - loffeecover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2300+ diggs and at the frontpage...
Ouch, that hurts! Somebody got an aspirin? - loffeecover, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11.www.fortunecity.com/victorian/impressionist/784/Ericsland/Vatten/Nude/0022.jpg

Not too bad, hey?
And no: she's not my girlfriend ;-) - gnalakalaciath5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7i'm pretty sure this is the tut the guy used to made the video.
http://www.andreibilan.blogspot.com/2006/09/alien-water.html- manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now you should submit _that_ to Digg! Very cool!
- spigumus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Buried as lame. The guy didn't even credit the tutorial he used. I don't know what bothers me more. The Metacafe people commenting praising him being a Photoshop god, or the Metacafe people believing that Photoshop is a magical piece of software that makes instant designs.
http://www.andreibilan.blogspot.com/2006/08/all-my-photoshop-tutorials.html are the rest of them.
- halfgook, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1final result was horrible.
i could do a better job. - Bioshock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Haha, love that song. That's pretty much the only good thing about this video, not deserving of front page. Its decent work, though, but I've seen better. (I suck at Photoshop, so good job for being better than me!)
- ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It'b be helpful if there were written instructions to go along... It's more of a show off at this point...
Final product: http://www.jzencovich.com/files/pswater.png - MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I followed this tutorial as part of a class activity a few months back, and I added a sunken ship. I think it turned out pretty nice.

Can you tell me what does this mean? You had a class where the teacher introduced to you this tutorial or what?
- andreibilan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I followed this tutorial as part of a class activity a few months back, and I added a sunken ship. I think it turned out pretty nice."
- paulyknapp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0You guys suck....I mean, I got all of that....and I'm part retarded.
It makes me want to go play with photoshop.....sexually of course.- kingace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lemme get this straight, they suck, and you want to have sex with a computer program. Interesting logic. But then again, you're part retarded.
- animefx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow! Thanks a lot for explaining the process, that Primus song REALLY helped me understand each and every step you went through at 3x speed.
No video is needed for sarcasm. - klepto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1OK! this is lame.
Buried as such - Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is pretty terrible. Such poor methods should not be encouraged.
- reticular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.reticular.info/domains/damonzucconi/alpha/wp-content/photos/das_glow/dg_f-1_pre.jpg
;) - andreibilan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ross, it's not very nice taking credit for someone else's creation; this tutorial it's not your creation, it is mine and you found it on my blog (www.andreibilan.blogspot.com).
Thank you for copying, this means that I am really good.
I expect you to give me full credit for the tutorial.- Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No you're not. Your methods are amature at best.
- sunnex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that's incredbile..but i need alot of photshop experience, which i don't have, to be a that level
- timxpx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...love how so many people blasted this video.
a lot of people, especially people who are familiar with photoshops tools and interface, don't need their hand held through talk-throughs and written tutorials.
