- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39I'm sure that 95% of people out there wouldn't even know how to load styles into photoshop much less use them to generate a standards compliant, search engine optimized site.
- nahdan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30if you think that a couple of shiny button presets is the embodiment of your design skills, then you've got bigger things to worry about than someone giving away layer styles.
- sickswaystop, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31can't really complain about free layers, thanks man!
- Nocturnal, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Oh please, just stop. You're a douche. Stop with this I'm a holier than thou designer and it takes SKILL to design a website. Give me a break and everyone else. Get off your high horse you douche.
- arcooke, on 11/01/2007, -24/+42Am I the only one getting incredibly tired of this "Web 2.0" trend? Every website looks the same, every logo has the word "beta" next to it (which really irritates me). What ever happened to originality? With all the technology we have, and the flexibility we have with web programming, there's no excuse for this. Don't get me wrong, these layer styles are very nice.. but come on already....
If I see another shiny plastic looking button, I'm going to puke. - strictnein, on 11/01/2007, -1/+16Well then get off a site that is decidedly "Web 2.0".
You're probably one of those people that, like the poster, thinks that "Web 2.0" is all about how a site looks.
Here's some of the main parts:
User generated content
Sharing of content
Standards compliant web pages
Social
Users (typically) exert some control over the website (see Digg and HD-DVD)
Minor parts:
tagging
RSS
It is not:
Shiny buttons
"Beta"
Adsense - iaglu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Al Gore made it up.
- succubuskiller, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17The best part of the "2.0" hype is putting Beta on everything. Beta now simply translates to, "Hey, it doesn't matter how many bugs or things wrong with the app, we are in Beta and it is ok".
But it also makes for getting good PR. You announce your product, then you announce a second time that you are exiting Beta.. 2 for 1 deal. Yarrrrrr. - sandig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11From the same guy:
http://www.dezinerfolio.com/2007/03/14/ultimate-web-20-gradients-free-download/ - roket21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7or they just stay in beta forever
Like Google. - vare2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Agreed. Web 2.0 or not, one appreciates a good layer when one sees one.
- element21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Lots of people will appreciate these - I for one find them a great time saver. rather than having to do the same layer style effects over and over individually on my crap computer. like jer2eydevil88 said if they don't know how to load the styles its not really devaluing anyones skill trade... its not like layer styles are difficult skills to master anyway
- Beaver6813, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yea, its good for people who just design the odd thing when they have to, not for full-time designers (they would make their own stuff if they were any good).
- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5no, you're just a stingy person and a ***** designer. helping others and sharing tips/resources/techniques doesn't devalue one's skills, it just shows that you're a generous person willing to help others and contribute to the online community. that is what makes the internet so great.
these are simple resources that will help other designers create their own original deisgns. if you think that applying these layer styles will automatically generate a good looking design then you're clearly not very experienced with graphic design. graphic designers have always shared resources and design techniques and tips with each other. that's why there are so many sites out there for designers to share photoshop brushes, styles, tutorials, and other resources. the open source community is also based on this idea of sharing and mutual learning.
your petty attitude is really quite sad. developing and improving your skills by learning from one another is the best way to grow as a designer. thinking that not helping or sharing with others makes your skills more valuable and holding a hording mentality towards artistic skills is simply pathetic. if that's the kind of person you are, you probably don't contribute anything to the graphic design community, and you will never be respected by the community. frankly, if you're that petty, you probably don't have very strong talents or skills to begin with. those who've established themselves as strong designers or good artists usually aren't afraid of helping others. - smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4people have always given away resources for web development/web design for free. some people just like to share their talents and help others. the open source community is based on the same attitude. i don't see how this is an indicator that web 2.0 is in decline. it's a set of trends and technologies which have become widely adopted because much of it is very useful and has changed the face of web applications and online services. it's not likely that we'll go back to pre-web 2.0 trends and just ditch rich and responsive interfaces and social web applications.
- GerryBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, no I'm not getting tired of the Web 2.0 look. What's wrong with clear, effective design?
Like anything, you're got leaders and copyists. That's why it's so ubiquitous at the moment, because a lot of people LIKE this style of web design and want to emulate it. - erietta, on 04/15/2008, -1/+3Love it...but does anyone know of the origin of the "web 2.0" glassy style?
- badmephisto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3To use the Styles,
download the file
open Photoshop, go to Edit> Preset Manager > select Styles from drop-down, and click Load. navigate to file. Click done
Then go to Window > Styles
this should open up a pane with all your styles. Now create a rectangle or something in new layer, and just click the style that you want to apply - psyjoniz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Nocturnal is right. it takes real talent to do anything worthwhile on the net. not just graphic design skillz, motion2.

http://www.gazeboentertainment.com - lilSears, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm still wondering what web 2.0 is.
- SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I don't know what everyone is complaining about. As long as it's easy to read, and gets me from page A to B, i'm good.

- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2if you're not a web developer, then just don't click on links that are aimed at web developers. we don't give a ***** that you don't give a ***** about web 2.0

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I wonder if people know things besides gloss contribute to web 2.0
- derkles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Web 2.0 is so duplo.
- briankealer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Does this work in CS3? Can't seem to import the ASL.
- NoNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3motion2, you're talking *****, quit attempting to justify your dribbling ranting unless you can give everyone here evidence of a current, original design done by yourself which doesn't have any web 2.0 elements whatsoever (gradients, rounded edges, colours, layout etc). It must also be a business or commercial site (not some student type showcase website where it's no holds barred on design anyway) and fully standards compliant. Also, it must not suck whatsoever.
No?
Well then shut up. - hobogeek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Is it just me or is the glassy look really starting to get tiresome?
- psyjoniz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5i'm going to guess mac..?
