- invader, on 10/11/2007, -0/+28You may be surprised, but the entire video showcases two fonts (with one small exception: the word "fight" was in "Wyld Stallyns")
The serif font was Modern No. 20
The sans-serif font was predominantly Helvetica Neue Black Condensed (I haven't worked on it since early April, so I can't remember if I used any other weights -- I would bet that I squeezed in some Medium somewhere)
The philosophy is that the usage has as much influence on how the font looks as the font face itself. If I had used many random fonts, it would probably end up looking unprofessional and tacky. Something I admire about experienced print designers is how they can transform the look of a font with context. - invader, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26Apparently ping pong isn't one of them...
http://brian.shaler.name/images/blog/pingpongmiss.jpg - tominator1983, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22Very nice.
- nicksoni, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20This is another cool dynamic typography video by a guy named Jarratt Moody, except with dialog from Pulp Fiction.
http://www.jarrattmoody.com/intonation.html - greenamp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Good technical use of Flash, but rather mediocre use of typography. Nothing even appeared to be kerned. It was more about running text across the screen than it was an exploration into the shapes and moods of letterforms, ie: http://www.motionographermedia.com/jarrattmoody/intonation.mov
Of course, since I am giving an honest critique, I'll get dugg down. - invader, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10@nymphetamine
I can't take a break. I've got more stuff almost ready for release!
@tmedesign
Wow. - 08501337, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Chords
G, C, D, Em - Dycacian, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9He is a man of many talents. :D
- nymphetamine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8brian, you should consider taking a break. you're spoiling us.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7"Very nice."
I agree... but those little comment bubble popups at the bottom of the player are ***** ANNOYING. - tmedesign, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7i love you invader.
- invader, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I dugg greenamp up because I agree with him on more points than I disagree. His mediocrity stab may invite the "elitist" tag, but I do agree that there are parts where the kerning was a little sloppy and borderline amateurish. It's funny how everyone who dislikes this video cites the same example to show something better. Personally, I know of three that I think are excellent and I provided them with my video. I settled for 4th place in Digg's API contest, so I think I can settle for 4th again here -- but only because it was so fun to make.
There's a saying that goes something effect of "The more educated one is about music, the less music one will consider to be music." I thought of this reading the above rants. Someone took a typography class in college and now there's only one video worthy of the title "typography" - invader, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Jarratt didn't invent the genre of kinetic typography. His was great and helped motivate me to create a kinetic typography video. However, I didn't get around to starting until I saw this music video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=WXxouXt5dz4
There are a lot of other examples out there. Whether or not you deem them "original" next to Jarrat's video, they're fun to watch and fun to make. - endrest, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Brian is a thoughtful person... I saw a piece he did using ActionScript and had a question regarding how the alpha recognizes the skew of an object. He replied back to my email promptly and professionally. Indeed, I was impressed for that fact alone, on top of the fact that he completely answered my question.
- oathy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Oh man, dynamic typography on digg. bookmarking this thread to hopefully get some new ones to look at. I love the way this style of animation looks, especially because I'm a bit of a Typography addict.

The Hush Sound's, Lion's Roar and the Pulp Fiction ones are already linked, so I won't link them again. There are also some nice ones on Google Video found by searching for 'Dynamic Typography' or 'Motion Typography' but I'll let you find them for yourself. - invader, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Back-up in case you have trouble viewing the Viddler version: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-869363134854875595
- endrest, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Stuff like that doesn't take that long because it's (probably) one timeline with a bunch of animated text (probably plain text, too, with Flash 8's new Filters for nifty drop shadow, etc.) and an occasional graphic for added zing.
But, 'how long' is a relative time span. How long depends on how long you will take to learn the application. I'm just saying, some people could make this faster, depending on ActionScript usage, or slower, if done with traditional frame-by-frame technique. There are benefits to both ways. Also, using AS kinda demands a slight knowledge of math and/or data structures.
Also, during the creative process, many directions may be explored, but abandoned later for being off-target for whatever reason using time.
I'm thinking that Brian did it in 50-100 hours.....and that's because I know he's knowledgeable with AS, which helps immensely. I bet he did it over the course of a month or longer, with work-etc dominating life and all, allowing the project to brew on the back-burner. Without AS when possible? Double the time. I could be wrong and he could be faster or slower, but that's my disclaimer. - 08501337, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7You'd be surprised how many songs use a variation of those 4 chords.
- quepol, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6brian -- you should consider listing all the fonts you used! very cool.
- octoquake, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4i love acoustic covers of this song, and this is no exception.
but i did find this way of presenting the lyrics much too rapid for this calm song.
although the technique used is well done, the song choice is not - invader, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Direct link to the video: http://viddler.com/brianshaler/videos/2/
- yowhat2002, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Actually, he uses a capo fourth fret, and plays C, F, G, Am if you see the actual video of him doing it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_o0Xi2kd0k - greenamp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@ Rochester: "It's like saying a painting is bad because it didn't contain an element of abstraction."
Proper kerning is not an "element" of typography in that it can be applied or not applied. Kerning is an absolute. It must be done and it must be done well.
Typography is the single most difficult to master aspect of graphic design, yet it is the most over looked and skipped through. A great design with ***** type will be a ***** design, but a ***** design with beautiful type will be a decent design. - NinjaBoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The whole song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-8nkkOA_AM - BlondeJakeBlond, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3How do you do something like that? How long does it take?
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Beautiful
- iamthenoise, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2just a heads up for all the guitar nerds out there:
That last chord is actually an E Major (on outkast's version). Sounds much more appealing and natural on an emotional level with the e minor though (as leonard cohen says "the minor fall the Major lift"). Also, Andre 3K said that this was the first song he'd ever written on guitar....not bad! my first song sounded like a monkey throwing feces at the strings - anonymoz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Amen. The world of motion graphics is huge. This is not a particularly interesting example...
- TheKingInYellow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2that looks nice. i'd love to see it made with after effects rather than flash but...good job nonetheless!
- invader, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"Mom and dad" and "killing me" are definitely my favorite parts, as well. As for the rest, I suppose it depends on your taste. Randomness = Eye-candy. And many people like eye-candy.
- alabut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's so simple, yet still well-done. What a great demonstration of how a little art direction can go a long
way, compared to simply sharpening the knife and trying to use ever
more complex tools. - shaunmadams, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4@GawtMilk
He's using this trendy new-fangled literary technique called, "sarcasm."
Here's a better explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcasm - minusxthexbear, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1you don't by chance have an mp3 you could send me of this do you?
- BlondeJakeBlond, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Thanks. Very informative!
- MonkeyNews, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Its not bad. It started of a bit poorly as the font and animations of the words seemed random. But there were a few nice bits, like "mom and dad" and "killing me"
- nemobushido, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Check out Obadiah's cover of Radiohead's Idioteque. Good stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/v/El3ivyKx2oo - zzz@tkz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Quite sexy, I love that song too, I show the video of him playing it to my friends all the time, and they're always surprised.
- kappuru, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I go to the same school as the person that made that (The intonation vid)
and you are 100% correct. This piece was fairly mediocre. - anagoge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What?
- albertthree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Bravo! As a long time flash developer, I thought that was really impressive and creative.
- CaseyUCF, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2pretty kickass man. i'm sure you'll be snatched up and paid some big $$ real fast with skills like that.
- lmushl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1...but not all the lyrics were right...

This is pure lazyness. Come up with your own songs people!!!!
