- spyres, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Heaven forbid someone has to actually copy/paste/understand a bit of html.
- genetic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6so is wordpress.
http://wordpress.org/development/2006/03/widgets-plugin/ - thejerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It has been out for movable type a long time now.... well before wordpress. http://www.majordojo.com/projects/SidebarManager/
- casiotone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I'm sorry I must have forgotten the world revolves around you
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>yeah but you gotta think: not all blogs are tech blogs, ergo not all the people writing useful blogs are technically inclined.
True, but you do not need to be technically inclined to do this sort of thing in a blog in the first place. Most sidebar type "widgets" that existed before involved a) install plugin, b) activate plugin, c) copy and paste a bit of code from the plugin's readme into your theme. This isn't a matter of technical competence, it's a matter of reading instructions.
>so, really i do not see the relationship between technical ability and having something of value to say.
People who are incapable of learning have nothing of value to say. - hexodus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah but you gotta think: not all blogs are tech blogs, ergo not all the people writing useful blogs are technically inclined. so, really i do not see the relationship between technical ability and having something of value to say.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3can anyone say WORDPRESS?
http://photomatt.net/2006/03/29/wordpress-widgets/ - jreid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1anyone know if this is for movable type also?
- sammmy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Guy over at http://www.mipsscan.com/2006/03/bling_for_your_.html talked about this yesterday.
Looks like interesting stuff but mostly eye candy. I wonder when some truly useful widgets might be made available. - nacs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The Typo weblog system has had widgets forever now...:
http://www.typosphere.org/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2They still lack an Add to Any button for RSS feeds: http://www.addtoany.com/
- etx313, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Who gives a *****! Yay!
- j0hnnyb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's possible to cut and paste HTML for tools like this. It's also possible to hand-code a blog in Textpad.
Widgets will make tools like this easier to use, just as blogging software made blogging easier. - loac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Booyaa! I use Typepad every day for my Weblog!
- V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1gee, I wonder how long b2evolution will probably take to add widgets... zzzz....
- habenneas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Meh.
- thejerm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1obviously 6A came up with the idea first http://www.majordojo.com/projects/SidebarManager/
- abdulmueid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wordpress has been testing their Widgets plugin for over a month to fish out bugs and made it public recently WITH an API and documentation for developers. So yes, on the wordpress platform we can expect to see some creativity.
- parsnip3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0How about a widget that allows for pagination? In the year 2006, it is hard to believe that unlike virtually all other blog solutions out there, Typepad offers no way to place a simple next button at the bottom of the screen. Surely this is more important than having ClubMom seamlessly integrate into a blog.
- thejerm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Obviously wordpress was trying to keep up with movable type http://www.majordojo.com/projects/SidebarManager/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Wow, imagine the possibilities of thousands upon thousands of bloggers being able to use this widget to update their thousands of blogs that you don't read. How exciting!
- vigorus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Sounds like a useful feature. I'll have to check it out. Geez, they couldn't come up with a more original name than "widgets"? Their marketing folks should be more creative.
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Obviously this is to keep up with wordpress...
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Umm.. I suppose this will be useful for people who don't know ***** about html and such, but frankly, anybody who is incapable of figuring it out and who actually needs this sort of widget thing is highly unlikely to have anything to say that I really will want to read. This will only lead to more useless and cluttered blogs out there, not to mention abandoned blogs. It's just that now, these non-functional blogs will be chock full of crap in the sidebar.
Good job, fellas! - patrickloggins, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Cool. (Damn, I wish they were Y!WE widgets though :P
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Blogs about blogs get the ***** out of here!
