- xcalibre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Digg is a place where you can find some of the web's most interesting/ informative article/pages. Ranging from interviews with physicians to cooking recipes that you get of Google. Some regulars here complain that its a technology-related website and it should only have submissions of that sort, I kind of agree. Now this post is in fact one of the most simple yet useful photoshop (techno. hint hint) tutorials that I have ever seen. I'm sure other people will find it useful too. You can keep your stupid digg.
I Digg. - quadvods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1410,000 photoshop layers
10 hours of work
Taking a photo of actual grass
1 click. - EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Or you could just make a "Cool Tutorial" Section that would be usefull to many, many people instead of brushing it off as non-digg worthy.
- sphacelate, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9concise and very useful... I DIGG IT
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8nothing wrong with using old photoshop.
photoshop 7 is my version of choice, i used cs or cs 2 recently, hated it. - stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well executed, but why not just throw some grass on your scanner? A-DUH.
- monkeycat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Some techniques are so simple and yet much more effective than the complicated ones. This is a good example of that.
- smash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Wow that's like Final Fantasy.
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I *just* got done working on a drawing in Photshop with a large amount of grass... this definitely would've helped.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I get the same feeling whenver I watch a friend of mine use Photoshop
It's amazing how powerful it is in the right hands - jaxun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3See, that was so NOT the kind of grass I was thinking of when I saw "grass" and "relaxing" in the description.
- Democritus2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5blue- i see the "no fun" group have seriously modded us down.
Perhaps they need something more then rendered "grass" - iKato, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Simple, nice, clean and concise tutorial. I digg it.
Photoshop's power never ceases to amaze me. - av4rice, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I understand that not everyone's upgraded to CS2 right away but 5.5?!
And why is he using the eliptical marquee of all tools to make the initial grass blade shape? And then he uses a distortion filter to make it curved?! That method offers very little control over the creation of the curve and doesn't let you change it afterwards. It's a no-brainer that the first step should utilize the pen tool which is made SPECIFICALLY for things like that (and yes, the pen tool is available even in old-ass 5.5)
Lastly, this guy needs to learn the difference between their and there. - hayseed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5There won't come a time when every tutorial will reach the homepage because only the ones that digg users find interesting enough will rise to the top.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From what I can tell, the way he uses it: "It is just a matter of doing the same now, duplicating changing shape and size slightly , flipping them, erasing here and there", is correct.
- fmin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why is it that people always claim things non digg-worthy? Digg is about all sorts of various topics, and obviously if people digg a link then the people have spoken. What they should really do for digg is create RSS feeds for different categories, or better yet allow you to customize your own RSS feed to only display new entries in the categories you are interested in.
Oh, and the tutorial is pretty cool, but should explain a bit more... - sixlocal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One of the great things about PS is that there are different ways of doing things. He managed to make perfectly fine grass without the pen tool... great.
Cutting out the shape with ellipses is just fine - also, it is just as fast, if not faster. What's your problem? - retral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are TONS of tutorials here...

That's why, in my previous comment, I expressed dislike of tutorials on the front page... there are tens of thousands of tutorials out there, readily available, anyways... hope you enjoy them. - Areku, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I'll never use the grass brushes again... wow...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like tutorials. I probably would have never found most of the stuff popping up on Digg otherwise. And the comments are great too, people like to post their favorite version of a tutorial, so each Digg article is close to all you need. Works out pretty good really.
To be honest, I think it's a good idea to search Digg just as much as searching google, because Digg's rating system and comments will let you know how good the link is and the comments give you extra info. Better results than Google, in other words. - stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's because the Photoshop UI continues to suck.
The late '90s called: They want their floating windows back.
Yeah, mod it down because you can't handle the truth. Why don't you cut holes out of your newspaper and then lay it down on some other newspaper and try to read it. Yes, that's why floating windows suck: Why on earth would you want to see all the ***** on your desktop THROUGH the app that you're using? And Adobe half-assedly admits as much by finally putting a big grey window in the background, but then when you move it, it leaves all the palettes and other crap BEHIND.
This company never learns. - Sibertank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When I first saw the title I could have swore it said "glass".
- furto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the grass in the image looks alot like the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion grass.. thats just what i think anyway..
..ok now u can bury me - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Above in step one I have 2 layers : a Background layer and a layer containing a simple blade of grass. I achived this simple shape by creating a sphere then using the Elliptical Marquee Tool to cut out a nice curved shape. I then experimented with the Filter/Distort/Wave Filter to get it to this shape, it was then coloured green. "
Where the ***** do you see there or their in that paragraph? - devoinregress, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Although weed is fun and good it's not that big of a deal.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Photoshop tutorials are always a +digg from me!
- devoinregress, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2what works better is going outside and taking a photo then putting it in Photoshop.
- arkanoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Still prefer 3d renders
- sheriffbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Definitely dig it.. There may be better ways to do this, but this one is descriptive enough so that most people should be able to get it.
and also everyone has to understand the inevitability of Digg evolving into a website that brings on more then just Tech articles. - evilxhwnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@thewebguy
On Mac, Photoshop CS is faster then 7 - Areku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Also, this dude is a fantasy artist, if you check out his website. Fantasy worlds don't need lawnmowers, I guess.
- Areku, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Uh, none of the tools needed for this tut are exactly MISSING from CS/CS2, you know.
- Takteek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Great tutorial but someone needs to upgrade it to CS or CS2. I'm sure some of that work could be avoided.
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Now he needs to create a lawnmower and mow his grass.
- monkzero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Huge Photoshop nerd, I love this Tut, great stuff. Always great to find new ways to fool people.
- Xiata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Right... and GIMPs or any other Macrodobe interface is any better.
While floating windows suck, there are very few other choices. Dockable/floating windows are not that much better and when you are working on an image that is larger than 6MP with at least 50 large and sylized layers, anything that moves on the window pane causes immediate trouble when you are drawing. Having the floating windows, I can place them outside of the drawing area and still have plenty of area to work with. In fact-- floating windows are very useful on my widescreen laptop because while the drawing is contained within the photoshop window, the floating windows are outside of the photoshop pane preventing any accidentally triggered rerendering of my drawings.
My point is: They work for me, and likely a lot of other people. If you got a problem with it, find a different drawing application. - inactive, on 12/22/2007, -0/+0Perfect for my site! http://peterkao.com
Thanks for finding the tutorial :) - jdonner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old article, already posted on many sites when my son wasn't born yet (a few years old).
But hey, 12 year old grow up and when they're 17 they sudddenly start to digg old material...bummmmmmer - fireflydigi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish it had a PSD I could fiddle around with.
- CubiX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1dude, things that people can do with PS
- solusdotipse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If thats photo-realistic I would fire the photographer.
Decent tutorial though... - whoutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You sure showed me.
- pixelmixer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0we just need a tutorial explaining how to "realistically" CUT the grass
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I don't have a camera... *sigh*
- webspy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1we could make a diggphotoshoptutorials.com
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1If you're implying the fact that the grass looks really long.. it's like that because he probably didn't want to spend hours upon hours creating enough small things of gras to cover such a large area..
- gwax, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6also pretty
- Xopl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Keep off the grass!
http://www.xopl.com/blog/2005/01/17/keepoffthegrass.html
Really! - aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Looks like someones virtual lawn needs to be cut!!!!!
Good read. -
