- avg_bear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think this is a pretty old program on discovery. The elevators are mulit-level, and move unconventionally if I remember. It's really more of a city rather than a building. Think of it like Zion in The Matrix.
- alecks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I for one welcome our new japanese constructing megalords.
- test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is very old news, they had the special on TV like a year or two ago. Cool idea but it will be a long time before it can be done. and by that time the computers will rule the world and we will be slaves..
- DeVS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was actually an hour long special about this on the discovery channel. They talked about what it would take to build something like this and this is something that would have to wait a looooong time to be built due to construction limitations of modern equipment and materials.
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1isnt like there's an earthquake every 5 minutes in japan?
- tada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love the concept of building up instead of out. Check out http://www.arcosanti.org/ if you are interested in this concept. Arcosanti is located in Arizona and is well worth a visit because all cities well have to resort to this kind of architecture in the future.
- cappslock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is just another channel for government subsidised Japanese contruction industry to use up as much money as possible. There are already enough ugly, useless buildings in Japan.
- forezt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I fell in love with this concept after I first watched the hour long special on Discovery. Imagine a world where instead of cities in the traditional sense, we would have a bunch of buildings around a few of these. Social problems aside, imagine what it could do for the environment and our open spaces. And also imagine if these buildings acted as bases for space elvators.
Another thing to think about is puting these structures on other planets. On Mars, with 1/10th of our gravity and less powerful winds, these might prove the be the cheapest, highest capacity colonial structures possible. So even if the idea doesn't quite pan out down here on Earth, it'd still be useful to hold on to for future reference.
Most people don't realize what an old idea this actually is - it was first presented by Frank Llyod Wright in the early to mid 20th century as "Mile High City". And in the 1920s movie "Metropolis", the main skyscraper of the city was a mega-skyscraper. Only now is it coming close to being possible.
So before you dismiss the Sky City as "stupid", think about what it could mean for cities, society, the world, and even beyond. - KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I work in a building with just 28 floors, but each of those floors is more than twice the size in area of an average tall building. Therefore the population per floor is at least double that of a regular tall building. It is already a pain getting up and down on the lifts. Most days we stop at nearly every floor. It is an endless source of frustration and anger. Imagine the frustration that would accompany a building 200 stories high. Not to mention the hassle of a fire evacuation."
Didn't you see the article on elevator hacking? You just prees and hold both the floor you want and the door close button and itll skip the other floors. - jhd121, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is probably the stupidest idea ever. The first natural disaster, terrorist attack or fire would kill 35,000 people. I hope no one got grant money for this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let's not forget, this is Tokyo. There isn't anywhere to go but up since Japan has given up is imperialistic aspirations.
- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No thanks. 1.) I'd never live in a large city. 2.) I detest heights. and 3.) It's a nice target for terrorists.
- retr0spectiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This is probably the stupidest idea ever. The first natural disaster, terrorist attack or fire would kill 35,000 people. I hope no one got grant money for this."
Did you watch the program or even RTFA? All new buildings have that risk. The bigger the building = more security. Its an effing Sky-City! And sorry to get your hopes down, its already payed for, and its coming. - chr1snv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ROFL, it looks like some thing out of a anime movie :P the japanese must be really bored, you know someone already tryed to make a mech, and a super strength suit?
- Kindred420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does Lando Calrissian work there also?
lol, good digg - CXI162, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"that would house, employ and entertain hundreds of people."
Wow, surely not hundreds! Check your math. - kevinduvall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how the hell does this save space?
- Exi7wound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When the BlockWars start in Megacity One, don't come looking for my Lawgiver- I'll be riding into the Broken Earth on my Lawmaster.
- lucky2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is such old news. It has been around for a long time. Oh no wait, that was the jetsons.
- procyon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd friggin live there...I'd never have to deal with freakin traffic again.
- martz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0forezt:
"And also imagine if these buildings acted as bases for space elvators."
That would only really work for places near the equator, so parts of africa and south america. Unless you build a floating one of these, but then there would be too many stability problems. Though I suppose if you set the tower/legs far enough apart, you could overcome that.
/still cool though - nevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how many people is it supposed to accommodate? it said that it could house 35,000 but then said that the monorails could transport 100,000 people. are they planning on having people from outside sources come there to work? and it doesnt seem like they should make something that big for just 35000 people. I mean, a stadium? i guess i could see it in japan. people from outside sources would have to commute in. and the elevators should probably stop at every section and then have smaller elevators to get up the floors at each section.
actually, this is a cool idea, i wonder how it will work out. - bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0all I say is..if you bought the land, you bought the space above it too...so why not keep building up until they say stop. cant' get more economical than that...
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so cool. It looks like something straight out of a Final Fantasy game
- asplodzor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"hundreds of people"
Um... somehow I was under the impression that modern day skyscrapers accommodated _thousands_ of people
But that's just me... - alittlemelty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i saw a show about this a few months ago. very very cool. you have to wonder about terrorist attacks with such a tempting target as this, though.
- darrk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i saw the show on this almost a year ago and it was amazing!
- Jon2x4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The sky...Brillant!!!
- jamiejamez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"that would house, employ and entertain hundreds of people."
"Wow, surely not hundreds! Check your math."
Nope he's right, only hundreds, the rest will just be outsourced bitter slaves to the machine. - Registered99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, It also reminds me of Final Fantasy 7...
- chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0forezt: You forgot to think about the Big Brother aspect.
- meyerj88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too close for comfort IMO. I like having my space, but thats just me. I live in rural USA so I'm spoiled with wide open spaces. However, this may be a good solution for Japan or some large cities. It certaintly won't be a reality in the USA for a long, long, long time.
- darcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0check out the size scale pic, Eiffel tower looks like a toothpick compared to this thing.
- hms2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, after reading the 1st 30+ comments, amazing, i had to create an account just to say this to you people. here i am, a regular US citizen of ethenicity, born and raised in NY, english was my 1st language, i've had my share of racism gorwing up, and i am shocked at how many Bigots there are. You are all bashing on Japan's goal to build a structure that can help support their own citizen, You who are not even from their Lands, know nothing of their strifes, You all dare to pass judgment on their ideas like you are better then them? Who in the hell gave you the rights to think you are better then them?
you complain about how their history was not a very bright one, ok... that has absolutely nothing to do with what they are doing here. And if you are going to ***** about their pass, lets have a little look at OUR PAST AND PRESENT, remember WWII? yes, we all know about Pearl Harbor, it was only the biggest 3hour waste of my life... hahaha, anyways, yes their old gov. started ***** with us and we defended ourselves, thats normal, but what about when we dropped some of those A-BOMBS on their NON MILITARY INNOCENT WOMEN & CHILDREN FILLED Cities? Oh yeah... japan's history was pretty messed up, but then again, so was EVERYONE Else's, but the only 1 that was more trigger happy then all of them, was Ours, then either Russia or Germany followed by all the waring countries in Africa. But NOOOO we don't give a ***** about their past, because they're not becoming the world's NEW NUMBER 1 technogically advanced Country. Thats right you high horsed fossils, we're not as Great as we once were, and why? Lets see... after the War, and demilitarism of Japan, they focused their efforts on creating a better country, one that doesn't involve Killing/Bullying Weaker countries. They created the best Cars, Computers, Gaming Systems (PS3 anyone?) and just about everything else (oh yes... and much more attractive women, unlike the chubby ones you see all over the place stuffing their pork bellyed faces in Mcdonalds)
You complain, It's just gonna be the number 1 target for terrorists, well, lets see what makes a terrorist, you send your armies into someone else's country, you kill their peoples, put up your OWN TYPE OF GOVERNMENT and leave right away, expecting them to follow your rules just cuz u say so, you spit on their beliefs and give them WMD's.... so you have a large faction of down troddent, fully armed men, who has no jobs or means to support their families, and no reason to live.... then you send in your armies and fleets to wipe out their militia to STEAL the only thing worth any capitol (OIL ANYONE?) and expect them to take that lying down? (does anyone else think we didn't wipe out the Nazi's during that war? instead maybe we became them?)
ok i'd love to comment more... but it's dinner time, heh... i was seriously baffled when i heard in the announcment during my freshman year about how we could have RE-ELECTED President crotch hair.... er Bush into power again... and after reading your comments... im not as surprised anymore, me living in the east coast, i often forget that not the rest of the country are as open minded about other races, as we are, more of the country that elected that retard were retards themselves living in the middle and south... ya wanna know how come some countries like europe and now the US seems to decline from greatness and countries like Japan seem to keep getting more and more advanced? it's a few factors... Harsh Living conditions, Dark pasts which makes their new generations learn and avoid making the same mistakes, and the fact that there's no inbreeding... yeah... that 1 is a biggie, you see when your genetic ID are TOO similar, your babies come out retarted, look at the past european country leaders, and out president... *gasp* you just noticed!! - Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember seeing this on TV a couple years back, it's really awesome.
- DrMerle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I'm pretty sure digg wasn't intended for people to scour the internet for tech and then post them. It's supposed to be news related information, not links to websites."
It does seem like a lot of people want to use it that way, so they probably should add a forum. Then people could vote if something was opinion or news, and send the less "important" things to the forum if they weren't posted there in the first place... - jhd121, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0retr0spectiv: Did you know the Titanic was considered unsinkable?
And yes, I RTFA, which I assume means Read The Flash Article. It was pretty.
And it's true, the Japanese have never been total dicks to the rest of the world... wait a minute. - drbyatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if one more person says terroists im going to f***ing kill someone.
"keep people afraid then have them controlled" - snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old news. Not a bad idea. Your description was screwed up, it says "hundreds of people" not "hundreds of thousands of people".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I...totally...made this digg awhile ago...

"Then You have them controlled" - MrSlippers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cant beleive I'm the first to mention that this is a real life Arcology from Sim City 2000.
- Tengoku2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This seems like something out of a Japanese cartoon and being of a young generation I think it looks awesome. I would love to own some property in a sky city someday. Maybe not a place to retire, but certainly to live the best of modern life.
It really looks like the wave of the future for already established cities; New York, Tokyo, Moscow, Paris. - kyote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0woohoo! Future time is here!
- ascheier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's a good chance I'd move to a place that had this sort of architecture.
- b04155, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0alecks: what, do you think you're on fark or something
- tjkrz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm pretty sure digg wasn't intended for people to scour the internet for tech and then post them. It's supposed to be news related information, not links to websites.
- jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"you have to wonder about terrorist attacks with such a tempting target as this, though."
Probably not much risk. The Japanese aren't total dicks to the rest of the world the way Americans are. - KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0press*
