- Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30I hate to sound so negative... but what the f*ck is the point of these huge top(#) lists? The top 500 fonts on the web must be EVERY font ever used on the web, it's absolutely pointless. The whole point of a top anything list is to LIMIT the number and see what the MOST popular items are.
- drpeppper, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28Why is lifehacker submitted instead of the actualy site where the fonts are? This is really retarded linkjacking.
- MadNuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Please stop using the word fetish in a non-sexual context...it weirds me out :-/
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24More free fonts kids can use for signatures! Yippee! I'll download these, and next time I enter a Photoshop challenge where the goal is to parody the Disney title as best as possible, I know I'll be ready.
How about something usable? There is nothing better than a list of free Helvetica clones. - crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Site got indirectly dugg to death. Looks like most of these are from http://www.dafont.com anyway.
- BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18as retarded as saying linkjacking?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I recommend http://www.fontleech.com/
It isn't updated anymore but the archives have some great links to free fonts. ahem. free QUALITY fonts. - punterfpc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Comic Sans is my font of choice! HA!
I cry when I see designs using that font... - gr3yn3t, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I prefer to stick to Courier, Papyrus & Copperplate Gothic for all of my designs..
< /sarcasm > - skrapek, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Find me a website that's giving away great fonts like Helvetica and Garamond 3 for free and then I'll read your blog spam.
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I PREFER MS SANS SERIF.
- drpeppper, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8no, not quite.
- twatwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Seriously, who is going to look at 500 fonts... then ask yourself who cares about the top 500.
Top 10 or 20 I could see, but 500? Com'on now... - op12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Who said it was non-sexual? :)
- tozmervo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4*cough*torrent*cough*
- davidlow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Not true. The important thing about any "Top 500" list is the order of the entries so you can see the best one at the top and then read down as far as you like. However, this list doesn't do that either! They're don't seem to be sorted at all.
There's no around it. I'm gonna have to agree with you about this list. - Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -2/+5Did it go "vroom!" when you installed it?
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2uh...i want to see the fonts now...not in a couple of days
in a couple of days I'll forget about the site, even if bookmarked :(. - DSSurge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2fast way to extract these bitches:
unzip to a folder, use search (ctrl + F on windows) and search for ".ttf" in the folder you unzipped to, drag and drop or cut and paste to your system font folder. - Ashex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Sometimes it's better to post it on a blog first and link it from there, especially when your site can take the digg traffic and the linked one can't. It helps keep the linked site alive.
- eqrunner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2great little program to keep track of all your fonts before installing them. Great for keeping system load to a minimum
http://digg.com/design/Free_Font_Manager_for_all_your_new_500_fonts - freedompower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd like a list of the top used font on the web. This list is the most dowloaded fonts from free fonts sites, but if a crawler could get statistics about most used fonts on the web used in CSSs, it would be interesting.
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wouldn't you like a nice regular serif with two long descenders and a sans serif T junction?
- haxored, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I, for one, am downright sick of all these free fonts which are just clear rip-offs of corporate logotypes. If I am looking for a font, I need an easy to read, nice looking font that will look just as good on the web as it will on print. I most certainly do NOT need 300-400 display fonts that are only good for headlines and for copying some trademarked brand.
There are surprisingly few high quality, free fonts available online, and it's for one simple reason: Making a truly great font is a LOT of work. Not many people would just give that away.
The bottom line: If you want good fonts, go here: www.fonts.com - emanueljones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ Jaxal
That's because Arial is a cheap Helvetica clone - read this: http://www.ms-studio.com/articles.html
It's too bad that good sans-serif fonts like Frutiger, Avenir or Univers aren't web-standard. - spiffyfitz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm going to start a site against Papyrus. Users can log in and upload shots of Papyrus in the wild. I seriously see it 2 - 3 times a day. I abhor it.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The only thing this list is good for, is telling you want fonts NOT to use.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would prefer that designers focus on the three or four that are actually readable for any amount of time.
- panguin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1don't you mean,
"/sarcsm"? - rholloway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1*****, man
- eqrunner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1great little program to keep track of all your fonts before installing them. Great for keeping system load to a minimum
http://digg.com/design/Free_Font_Manager_for_all_your_new_500_fonts - xxXECUTERxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1how do i install this?
- CourtesyFlush, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1My fav for far out fonts is still the scriptorium.
- cvp1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Yeah, thanks Lifehacker. Now can you get back to the productivity stuff instead of these useless posts that waste time?
- eqrunner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1screw that. You can get 1001 free fonts here http://www.1001freefonts.com/
and they include all 500 fonts listed at the above site
digg the 1001 story. its only been around for 245 days

- LocoMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not sure if I'm responding to a troll or to a joke that went over my head, but for those that actually wonder where that came from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Made-up_words_in_The_Simpsons#Our_new_._._._Overlords - hollismb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So true. If you read something somewhere, just link to it. Don't try to take credit for it by putting it on your lame ass blog.
- Auto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is lame, I hate when Digg users link to their blog that has a short paragraph of text and then a link... You could have just said "Top 500 fonts of the web" and linked directly to Fonts 500.
If Digg is an experiment in true democracy, I'm worried. - ownage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Great find. The server that is hosting the 500Fonts site is really taking the digg effect hard.
- kushiel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Either you only use Lynx, or you are oblivious to the extension .jpg. On occasion, you need a font that isn't one of the standard serif or sans-serif for design purposes.
Although I do agree that when people use non-standard fonts for the text itself it pisses me off. - iresh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0See amazing collection of free fonts and free dingbats. With over 8,000 freeware fonts http://www.urbanfonts.com/
- ajcates, on 01/20/2009, -3/+2to say only 500 different fonts have been used on the web is just dumb
- jeffbarnett513, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They all have serifs. That is so web 1.0. To be trendy they must look simple to the point of boredom and always delete the last vowel of the word.
/sarcasm - M0b1u5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How dumb is this? There are a tiny subset of fonts which can be rendered by every browser on every platform, but beyond that, you're a complete idiot to use anything which requires a download. That's like saying "Sorry you can't come into my store unless you are wearing a jacket. Oh, and we sell those jackets too, BTW!"
Proliferation of fonts is a mindless exercise by fools with little brain.
There are already fine fonts for the web; try using THEM instead! - jonashwing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@satanael
exactly my thoughts. - swaters, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0If, like me, you once subscribed to U&LC magazine or have large typography posters on your wall, then a posting like this is a real treat. And fetish IS the correct word. Also, anyone who uses Courier, Papyrus or any MS font should be cast in lead and and kerned!
- pvaras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I never knew 500 hundred fonts even existed. The sheer number of available typefaces boggles the mind.
- Tolzmaniac, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1font fetish... lol
- mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2uhh anyone that does any kind of web dev or graphics.
Subtle differences in fonts can make all the difference. -
