- bbbad, on 10/12/2007, -5/+129Why not use Blender it's free and rivals professional 3d software
http://www.blender.org/cms/Home.2.0.html - joshman5k, on 10/12/2007, -12/+84@R313453
Because pirating software that you intend to make money off of is the lowest of low. - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+50THIS IS A 15-DAY FULLY-FUNCTIONAL BETA VERSION.
AFTER THIS PERIOD, YOU MUST REGISTER TO CONTINUE USING THE SOFTWARE ABSOLUTELY FREE OF CHARGE.
CB Model Pro beta version is distributed as a self-installing
executable. - sanman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+49but does it blend?
- digitalsin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38So they can pretend they have a large product line
- chuckd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36Blender, the 'vi' of 3D modelers... I have a love, hate, love relationship with it.
- uberdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31why don't they have any screenshots of the interface?
- rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Registration is free and easy, The time limit is now removed. I have a interest in 3d modeling as a hobby, It is nice to try new apps at no cost.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+36Meh. Blender 3D is better.
- illegal_op, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Blender looks daunting but is rather easy once you get the hang of it. I made this about 2 and a half years ago and it only took me about an hour.

it's not great but I really don't have an artistic ability. - scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Why the hell did they call it "pro"?
- Duositex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27And this release has a very similar type of sculpting. Check it out at:
http://www.blender.org
New website likely coming today as well as Blender 2.43 (new version) - hadak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25holy web1.0 batman!
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30Stop talking nonsense if you don't know what you're talking about. Neither Blender nor Lightwave contain organic modelling systems. It's dissappointing to read comment after comment talking without even understanding the context of the software itself.
This is a "modeling program", it is not a full 3d rendering package (like those are). It's not *supposed* to be. This is closer to what Nendo was, or how Rhino3d lept in on the nurb modelling front.
There was a cool program out years ago called Organica: http://freespace.virgin.net/r.jennings/organica.htm On little reading (I'm waiting for the download) this seems to be more like that, but much better, and more advanced. Sadly, I'm not sure what happened to Impulse or Organica. I've always felt there's been a place for a "digital organic sculpting" program. There was one on the Mac over a decade ago, but the name escapes me. I loved toying with that as well. - flipmeat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Ah. Blender is FREE as in beer. It has its very own dev team, mad skillz of the big-house VFX people are, AFAIK, not involved.
Blender is quite deep for a free program. A short movie has been made with Blender, take a look. Good quality stuff. - pinesol101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Why do teenage girls in school stuff their bra? So that they look more appealing.
- TheSaladMan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Blender's an all in one tool, this specialises in modelling.
- samadam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18It is obligatory that i inform you that blender can now do multilevel displacement painting. Just like this.
http://graphicall.org (pick up a cvs build from there) - digitalsin, on 10/12/2007, -12/+29does blender still have that really great, simple to use UI?
Oh, and is my really heavy sarcasm noticeable? - unruled, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Im with ya, blender is great :)
- Snarfy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"Blender, the 'vi' of 3D modelers..."
I've wanted/needed to get into 3D modeling a bit. Now I know which program to use :) - Legato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10maybe im missing something but this just looks like a poor man's zbrush... not saying there isn't anything to improve upon it (there is - the gui) but how is this the "next best thing..."?
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@15thpd Blender isn't designed to be easy to learn - it's designed to be fast to use. Its focus is on productivity and workflow.
To the "organic modeling"/zbrush crowd: the current release of Blender sports a new sculpt tool which is quite capable. - hadak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9as a former automotive designer, i can tell you that Catia V5 is *the* app to know in the automotive industry. very good app, and easy to use.
- khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@15thPD
You only call it unintuitive because you fail to realize that it's interface is laid out so that your hands never leave the mouse and the left side of the keyboard. Once you get that down, with about two days of memrization, and you can do all kinds of stuff. - Kyderdog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I really like Sketch up, its free too.. Its more Architectural based.
http://www.sketchup.com/ - pinesol101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Unlike CB model pro, Blender works in Linux.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8If you want to get a job in the industry, you MUST learn the big commercial apps. This is why pirating applications these applications for learning purposes is generally accepted. 3DS and Maya, Zbrush (for texturing) etc., wouldn't be the standard today if people couldn't learn how to use them BEFORE applying for a job. The same goes for Photoshop, and Premier, or Pro Tools, etc.
Anyway, If you're into these "sculpting" apps, here's a new one that seems to be getting a lot of attention recently:
http://www.mudbox3d.com/whatismudbox.html
But like I said, learn the industry standard apps first! - Duositex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@lengau - lucasfilm and pixar are a dutch guy named Ton Roosendaal?
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@crash... awww ain't that cute. You didn't learn anything about Blender in your studies, so that automatically makes it crap. That reasoning is hard to beat. NOT.
- kyriakos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I agree with cleverboy.. this software is similar to ZBrush. Its purpose is not to replace lightwave/3dstudio/cinema4d and the likes but to complement them by producing organic 3d models that can later be incorporated in scenes made in other software.
p.s. at the download rate of 1kb/s i get from that site i think the beta will expire before i try it lol - Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Uh, actually blender3d (the upcoming version thats also in beta and downloadable) does support completely freeform professional mesh sculpting like this program does, except it supports all other types of modelling too.
And even out of beta it will stay free. - polyGone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8dugg you down by accident......good question though......
- SirNoobius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8THEY DO??? 8O
- 15thPD, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13I've been using 3d modelling programs since '98, including, but not limited to all the big names. Houdini, Maya, Cinema 4d, 3d Studio Max, Rhino, Wings3D, etc. I tried Blender about a week ago, and the learning curve was incredible even for me, and I use Houdini on a daily basis. Blender sports the most unintuitive interface I have ever seen in any program. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody.
- ojk007, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Maybe not but this is pretty good, just tried it. Very easy to use. Sure its not a fully professional program, but this lets us who cant use the pro's tools have a crack at 3d modellin'
- brokekneck, on 10/12/2007, -13/+19 I'll give it a try.... Probably doesn't come close to Lightwave 3d though.
- evalf, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I don't know much about 3D modelling, but the company making this app, Dassault Systèmes, is no newcommer to 3D modelling: this is the company that makes CATIA, the industry standard CAD software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catia). This seems to me as a good hint about the potential quality of this app.
- blastquake, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Yes, but if you notice only for Intel or G5 processors. No love for the G4.
- marshallh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Anim8or is free, a single EXE, less than 2mb.
Exports to 3DS and popular formats.
http://anim8or.com - kris33, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Windows version:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/kxs1hc - SlashNot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8you guys are missing the point. this isnt a replacement for blender or maya.
Its for people who just want to mess with 3d and not learn everything about nurbs and all that BS - Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Thats the thing about blender3d. Its workflow oriented instead of buttons and dialogs oriented. Its designed to be flown like a first person shooter - all the hotkeys are by your left hand, which sits at WASD, and the right is for mousing. THey're working on rebindable keys, but if you get used to the blender way, even though its DIFFERENT, it turns out to be a better workflow, in that you can work on the model itself without options and dialogs and things getting in your way. Watching an expert doing some box modelling in blender is amazing, the object just seems to 'grow' as he works on it - without having to pause to adjust settings or edit something in a dialog or anything like that.
If you want to go even more workflow oriented, go with WINGS 3D!... but that one is just incredible. Mainly because like the 3d modeller that this Digg is about, its totaly specific. Designed 100% for only extrusion modelling, wings 3d is crazy focused on that. - nayr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's just different; after you learn it, you model extremely efficiently. After i used blender, Maya/lightwave seemed lax in comparison. Plus, it's open-source, so you can add in all sorts of things (like the POV-ray build.)
- kris33, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7OS X version:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/ulhu6w
Windows on it way - dhollidator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Dear sanman,
I am hereby awarding you "Best Will It Blend Comment Ever". - monosyth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7sanman, i'm surprised you got away with that comment, however, in this instance, i think it is appropriate.
- maong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5this really isnt the same kind of program as something like 3ds max, maya, or lightwave.... It's more akin to Zbrush or Mudbox.... meaning that you can't really create models capable of being animated here since it is generating it's own mesh without thought to things like edgeloops. I will say that it looks like a nice, easy, free alternative to those latter two programs I mentioned. Definitely will be useful for creating normal maps and doing a bit of detailing on models you import from other programs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4what file formats does it export to?
- PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6i'm a Blender user and Crash is right. As mush as i like Blender its the over hype thats killing it Blender is not the Best 3D tool "yet" at the rate that it is being developed it will be pretty soon. Please dont over hype blender....but as for what it is.. It is very powerful.
