- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+87I don't know what kind of tires you're buying, or how you drive on them, but if you're only getting 20K mi for a set of tires, something is very wrong.
- jbert, on 10/12/2007, -2/+62No more tire swing.
- soapboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+58@ClassicJBC
It's just you, tires normally give that much on jagged edges such as those in the pic. It probably is more of a danger in pneumatic tires, since the increased pressure can lead to a blowout. - bannus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+55Do these tires get covered up or do they stay exposed like in the pics?
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -9/+60@redfan: You do know that big boy bike tires use an air-filled tube, just like car tires do, right?
Or has mommy not bought you a big boy bike yet? - Dycacian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+49I have known about these things for years. And yes they would cover the sides. When testing, people do odd things. They are just emphasizing the wheel construction. Leaving the sides off would be bad for numerous reasons in production. Air drag, lack of protection, etc...
- Dmarzio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44They would only have to cover the outer portion with flexible rubber, and it would look normal. I'm all for this idea...
- hifiDesign, on 10/12/2007, -12/+43A while back is right... Close to a year I think (could be wrong). 10 points awarded to the "diggers have short memories" camp.
- sokz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+40Watch out, the cool guy is here, drifting and AUTOCROSS! Because everyone with a car should do it.
- bflfab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30These pics have been around for almost two years.
Michelin press release

Evidently they suffer from extremely loud road noise and are going to have trouble meeting EPA noise standards. Their use in construction though is likely to proceed.
Wiki has more
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tweel - Ansible, on 10/12/2007, -14/+41Sweet, now instead of new tires every 20000 miles, we can buy new tires and wheels too!
- colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31I'm not even going to bother proving you wrong.
- stubbyperson77, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28no more letting air out of tires :(
- ThrasherC, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25If you've got soft performance tires then 20,000 is not unusual. The 50,000 mile tires ride and perform like crap, but damned if you don't get your money's worth.
- xcheats, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Ummm. If you use your everyday car for drifting and autocross theres another problem.
- xaryss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I have seen this before a while back, but it's good that they are still working on it.
- ClassicJBC, on 10/12/2007, -12/+30Is it just me, or is the tire giving a bit much hitting that bump? It seems that a jagged bump at the wrong speed could do some damage.
- xmetal, on 10/12/2007, -10/+28@sokz
actually, autoX teaches an incredible amount of car control skill and this country would be better off if all drivers needed at least a small amount of that kind of training before getting their license. Everyone with a car SHOULD do it. With the amount of death caused by unbelievably poor drivers, it wouldn't hurt. - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23... and eventually those new users will learn how to use the search feature before posting. (fingers crossed)

- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17I fear the day I see Michelin condoms
- 0crabby0, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15So where do the LED's go?
- xenoputtss, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14@merreborn
"big boy bike tires" do use an airfilled tube.
Car tires do not, the tire itself creates a seal with the rim, makeing an air tight channel which all your air goes into. - LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11that was terrible.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Bega - It's easy to fix that, search EVERY time you submit for this exact reasoning.
- dhakbar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I believe the main issue with these new tires is the amount of noise they create. Unlike a traditional tire, the holes cause air to be moved at pretty high speeds, and they can be quite noisy.
I've never seen or heard them, though; I could be entirely wrong. - Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -2/+11*spoke*en of...haha
- sinurgy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Actually most performance tires don't last very long at all. I had Michelin Pilot Sports and I barely made it 20k miles. In fact performance tires don't come rated in miles like the "normal" tires do. You can't buy a 50,000 mile performance tire, instead they are in the "tire life may vary" category. It's the price you pay for performance and often looks. To some people it's worth it, to others it's not.
- colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8original tyres were solid rubber, and they rode like utter *****.
- afex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11because your post was a pretty transparent 'i have an audi' billboard
- Modulo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Mirag3 - call me crazy, and I know I'm going out on a limb here, but when it comes to who to believe about the safety and durability of a kind of tire, I think maybe I'm going to take the results of Michelin's rigorous, extensive and legally required testing over your opinion after looking at four still pictures. Nothing personal.
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@theanticrust
Its hard to disagree with your statement as cars today are pretty dadgum safe. However I believe that the point in xmetal's comment "this country would be better off if all drivers needed at least a small amount of that kind of training before getting their license" is all about the driver.
I have been behind the wheel in three accidents. Two were completly unavoidable as I had no where to go and I was hit from behind. The third was when I was clipped by semi truck. The force in which the two vehicles (mine being a very small 4 door car) colided was quite impressive and I swear that if I had not known how to pull my car out of a spin doing ~60mph I would more then likely be dead (along with a little luck of course...still not certain how I missed that van cause damn it was close...I just did what I knew would bring the car to a stop aside from hitting a rather solid object) .
I can also think of one other time when a truck lost control and hit a car in front of me as we were doing about 50mph (i admit I was going a bit over) and there was no way in hell I was going to stop in time. I was forced to put my car into a control drift off to the side in the breakdown lane. Even if I could have stopped in time, the car behind me just barely managed to miss the wreck and would have surely struck me. You have no idea how thankful I was that I used to slide my car around after that.
Drivers Ed was a freakin joke when I took it. Yeah yeah, I saw those stupid videos on what to do when your in an extreame situation, but do you really think about that when your in them? Sure you saw the video on how to drive on ice, but if you never done it then you have no idea. Its extreamly easy once you have done it a few times but the first couple of times when your car starts to slide, I pretty much promise you that you are not thinking about what you saw on some stupid video. Sure you saw the video on when your car is put into a spin too. But can you really pull your car out of one and bring it to a safe stop?
I am not saying I am an expert, because quite frankly I suck in comparison to my friends that compete doing these things. However, if everyone learned the basics on how to pull their cars out of spins, how to properly work and use the emergency break, and basically how to handle their cars in an extreame situation, I will bet large sums of money that the accident rate will go down.
Its not the cars worry me. Its the drivers. - khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Those tires, going in excess of 55MPH, will create a noise well above the pitch of human hearing (around 42KHz compared to a human's average 16-20KHz range) and in the city won't sound any worse than those nice sci-fi cars in Judge Dredd. They'd CERTAINLY sound better than half of the super-pissed-off weedeater 4-bangers rolling thru the damned cities.
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yes good think she can't key your paint all up either!
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1012000 miles for a set of tires is the kind of stuff nightmares are made of.
- Yashu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think these are great. We need to be using less petrolium based rubber...
They will offer a smoother ride, and cost less to retread rather then buying entire new tires.
The part about how spike strips will not work on them makes me wonder if law enforcement will lobby to have them banned. It is ***** crazy how far people will go to ruin something because of "safety". Think speed bumps/humps that ruin perfectly good road.
Anyway I like the idea... litterally "reinventing the wheel". - saralk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I somehow don't see this becoming pervasive globally. It's construction seems extremely complicated. And so the tire will be very expensive, plus if the technology has been patented, then Michelen will hold a monopoly on them, and that'll probably keep prices up for a while
- JoshuaGross, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@saralk
You have no idea how they're constructed or how expensive it is. And as all new technologies, the first prototypes will cost a fortune and as they become popular it'll become cheaper.
There's nothing wrong with innovation. - Bega, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10heh, when's the last time you searched for a story that you had no knowledge of?
- sinurgy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"I don't know what kind of tires you're buying, or how you drive on them, but if you're only getting 20K mi for a set of tires, something is very wrong."
Wow +47 diggs on that comment, maybe the digg nation needs a little auto education! :-) - KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm sure law enforcement would come up with a way to disable the tires, in fact I bet Michelin is working with authorities to solve that problem anyway.
Personally I'd much rather have an annoying speed bump on my road than some jackass doing 100 mph down the road who ends up killing my kid. There's nothing wrong with using speed bumps for safety. They are typically put in low speed areas anyway so you should be going slow over them to begin with. - ModernGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@RevEng: Rev Engine? I imagine you drive a cheap civic with a body kit on it that makes you bottom out on anything but an interstate. The idea of a speed bump is that they force you to slow down to almost a complete stop and reaccelerate so that it will be safe for pedestrians in the area. If you could go 30 over the speed bumps, you'd go 50 between them. A speed limit is not a speed minimum, especially in a parking lot.
- MikeEnIke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@ Xen
That was relevant how ^? - Ricter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Probably ALOT better than the stock RE92s it comes with, but then again 4 round slabs of stone probably would too.
- Obsidian743, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4As far as I can tell, there's nothing stopping them from covering up the outsides to look (and sound) more like normal tires.
- 4U55l3NlNJ4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Old news appearing on wallstreets blog... nice spam work... big ups on getting all those diggs, just goes to show that the people in the world are getting more stupid as technology advances... http://digg.com/users/Wallstreet/submitted way to go spammer (and you only digg stuff you've posted too, you are a real giver, thanks for the contributions... great spam work)...
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15And I need to go to the grocery store tonight. Isn't that great?
- ArcusOfSV, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They get filled with snow and ice and ride like the Fred Flintstone mobile...
