- noahhoward, on 12/17/2007, -0/+25I think it's funny that they point out how it "allows you to cross the Mur river from one shore to another." as if that wasn't the primary purpose of a bridge anyway.
- Oshi, on 12/17/2007, -2/+21Absolutely incredible.
- Bhima, on 12/17/2007, -2/+13You have no idea how hard it is to take a decent picture of this. It looks far more interesting at night but the way they light it from the bank makes it impossible to put the Murinsle in between the light and camera. Worse! The pedestrian bridge (in the first picture) moves gently when people cross it and when many people cross it moves far too much to make a long exposure. So you have to cover the lights and shoot late at night in the middle of the week
Oh and on the blog this photo originates in a commenter sounded like they thought this was in the middle of nowhere, it’s not, it’s in the middle of the city. - inactive, on 12/17/2007, -0/+7Europe.
- alv22, on 12/17/2007, -0/+4Correction: Art capital of Europe, not just Austria!
To not make this a boring double post, more trivia: Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Thal, just 2 km from Graz. - onlyana92, on 12/17/2007, -0/+4I've actually been to there and it looks so much better in the dark! It's not in middle of no where that's for sure. It's in a very beautiful city in fact!
- glasnostic, on 12/17/2007, -1/+5can i get one in red?
- purplemonkey87, on 12/17/2007, -2/+5That's a pretty weird location... Wouldn't it have made more sense to put it over a large lake, rather than rapids?
- crushfan, on 12/17/2007, -2/+5Vito Acconci.
- SLYK, on 12/17/2007, -1/+3rtfa: The ‘island’ was created by the New York artist Vito Acconci.
- Bhima, on 12/17/2007, -0/+2I think it fits in well but I see it every day.
I'm not sure what you mean by comfortable though... it's a very, very cool place to see a jazz quartet. - Bhima, on 12/17/2007, -0/+2What!? It looks nothing like anything in disneyland.
However I will say there is an *extremely* fine bar very close by called "Baltimore" and if ou are ever close enough to see the Murinsle you owe it to yourself to have a beer at the Baltimore. - deepdiggdude, on 12/17/2007, -0/+2Sand bar.
- quoquo, on 12/18/2007, -0/+2yea it doesn't have a streamline shape. it looks more like a shell, which would work better if it was located in a desert oasis or in a tropical river.
it's nothing more than a misplaced prestige object, a giant penile implant for Graz. I don't think a bar inside can finance the construction and maintenance cost? - theuniversal, on 12/18/2007, -0/+2I agree. Completely ruins the view at that part of the river.
- ronintetsuro, on 12/17/2007, -0/+2I was actually thinking that. It would have been even better if they'd put some kind of turbines in underneath to harvest the current and feed power back into the grid.
I'm not even sure how feasible that would have been, but it's something to consider when building something like that. - quoquo, on 12/18/2007, -0/+2this is definitley something you would NOT see in the middle of Berlin, or maybe, if it was a giant cube made of concrete.
- alv22, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1The bridge looks way bigger in the pictures than it really is. It's rather small IRL.
Trivia: The bridge was built with project money awarded to the city when it was voted the art city of Austria 2003. - Carrot1991, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1Cool, thats on my list of places to go.
- Bridea, on 12/17/2007, -1/+2It just doesn't work for me. The design is great, it's just not great for the location. Why not work it in with the river more?
- Jedwards32, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1Definitely looks cool, does seem very out of place though. Doesn't fit in well with the surroundings, you would expect to see that in the middle of Berlin or something. but still i bet sunbathing is good there compared to being in the city, definitely a different concept
- Bhima, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1It fits right in! Have a look at "Kunsthaus Graz"!
That can't be more that a few hundred meters down river - andergriff, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1It doesn't look very comfortable, does it? I wonder if it fits into its environment in a harmonious manner.
- Bhima, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1We don't have a large lake where I live. We have that river, the Mur, running through the city.
- Bhima, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1Hah! I used to drink at a place in Atlanta called "The Sand Bar & Grill"
- stillasleep00, on 12/17/2007, -1/+2Not aesthetically
- FlickJustice, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1Why the hell do people ad links to images that are exactly the same size as the original?!
cool bar and bridge though. - quoquo, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1what city was it before graz? weimar (goethe), no?
- Betrayer, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1Take a good look at it now because in 50 years it wont be there anymore.
all they need is a good 100 year flood and the only thing that will be left is the bolts that used to anchor it to the rock. Although this may be the effect the architect/artist was trying for (by putting something where it shouldnt be). - orangetiki, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1The inside reminds me of Bar of Modern Art in Columbus, Ohio. But gorgeous architecture outside
- finalcloud33, on 12/17/2007, -1/+2Cool looking building but I think it ruined the landscape.
- Bhima, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1We were the "Cultural Capital of Europe".
- Betrayer, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1yea! did you also notice there is a bridge in one of the photos right next to this bridge.... i guess its just ART?
- Betrayer, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1and has this river ever flooded its banks? seems like a good heavy rain and a couple of floating logs would smash this place in minutes
- LeeSoong, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1In Soviet Aiola, bridges Bar you!
- Dylson, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1It lights up and has cool chairs and everything! I like this.
- Jedwards32, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1Probably right, it's too happy for berlin.
- kss42, on 12/18/2007, -1/+2I say! This must surely be the greatest comment of all time. The insight! The brilliance! The unparalleled wit! With this comment, you have deftly reimagined the entirety of the cultural zeitgeist, creating a work of such stunning commentary power that all other comments seem trite and meaningless in comparison. You, sir, are truly an artist, a genius without compare in all of Digg - nay, in all the Internet itself! I thank you honestly and deeply, for this comment has touched my very soul, and its elegant beauty has forever changed my life.
- anmaro5, on 12/17/2007, -0/+0I was looking at the same article at the same time but you beat me...Ha!
- kss42, on 12/18/2007, -0/+0I think it's a footbridge. I've never run a bar or coffee house before, but I can't imagine that a constant stream of cars driving through would be good for business.
- jamiesabina, on 12/28/2008, -0/+0The new URL for this link is http://www.thepompomist.com/magazine/2007/8/23/aio ...
Thanks!

www.thepompomist.com - Travelwriticus, on 11/29/2008, -0/+0Actually it was designed as an swiming platform and not as an bridge. As there are ways from both banks of the river to reach the platform it is a bridge as well. For marketing reasons we called it an island (I am from the town, where this platform is situated). Her you can find another view of the platform:
http://www.travelwriter.at/108/005/graz-murinsel.s ... - Szuroegy, on 12/18/2007, -0/+0i thought the island was made by Michael bay
- inactive, on 01/01/2008, -0/+0This throws the whole don't drink and drive concept out the window.
- elhombre03, on 12/18/2007, -0/+0the best thing about the bridge is the toilet, which is completely mirrored. hard to find out of it, if you had some cocktails!!
if you have the chance, visit the springfestival in graz http://springfestival.at/ - suprxtragrav, on 12/09/2008, -4/+3The ‘island’ was created by the New York artist Vito Acconci.
- WhoDoneIt, on 12/17/2007, -1/+0I think the effect you are seeing is from the slow shutter speed making it look like the water is flowing faster than it really is.
- shultzy055, on 12/17/2007, -5/+1"The ‘island’ was created by the New York artist Vito Acconci."
- darkened, on 12/17/2007, -5/+1In Soviet Aiola, boats bridge you.
