- nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -43/+234Is this article up for the "most dugg down comments" award yet? Can you people show a shred of decency? The most famous and most read book in history gets a great tech upgrade and your response is inappropriate jokes? Has digg been lost to the real geeks and overrun by the internet's ignorant? So sad...
Anyway, this sounds great. I wish I could test it out, but the Digg Effect seems to be killing the site. It's really nice to know this is available whenever I need it though, a great resource. - punkrokkr, on 10/12/2007, -34/+173Actually, the Bible never mentions a flat earth. If anything it implies the earth is round.
- FatMagic, on 10/12/2007, -21/+137The Bible of course teaches the correct shape of the earth. Isaiah 40:22 says God sits above 'the circle of the earth' (the Hebrew word for 'circle' can also mean a 'sphere'). Also, Luke 17:34-36 depicts Christ's Second Coming as happening while some are asleep at night and others are working at day-time activities in the field-an indication of a rotating earth with day and night at the same time.
- Obsidian743, on 10/12/2007, -40/+136So, can we expect the Christian-hating elite among Digg to dig this down simply for the sake of it being Bible related, despite the fact that it's a useful and cool tool for a lot of other people who would otherwise never hear about it except through Digg?
- xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -17/+87I dugg it despite being atheist. There is nothing wrong with reading the bible so long as you don't start dismissing everything else because "The Bible holds all truth".
I still think every atheist should read the Bible and the Quran. They should also read Carl Sagan, Richard Dawkins, Stephen Hawking, skepdic, etc... - CiQuat, on 10/12/2007, -9/+78A commentary is a writing to be used as parallel study to the Bible. It's not what you're thinking... They're actually useful for a better understanding of the historical context, relationship between various passages, and can often provide other interpretations that make it easier to understand what you're reading.
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -27/+92No. You can expect the majority of digg to digg this down, simply because the majority is probably athiest/agnostic
- Justathought, on 10/12/2007, -13/+71@flag564
To be fair I don't think the "Geek/Hacker chic" trend that that you are seeing is exclusively anti Christian. It is anti religion in general (meaning anti God worship). And, I understand why many people would feel that way. Through the centuries, religious leaders of all denominations have been guilty of blood shed, either directly or indirectly. I remember how my grand father used to tell how much he disliked catholic priests for the hypocrisy he saw in them during a war in his youth. Many people shared his feelings after seeing how during the first and second World Wars, Christian religious leaders on both sides of the war blessed their troops so that they would go and slaughter their brothers in the faith. Jesus commanded his disciples to be peacefull to all men.
It would seem to be a logical conclusion that since the Bible is the book that these people proclaim to follow it must be inherently destructive. What most people don't know, however, is that those people are not true Christians, but impostors, bringing reproach upon Christianity. Jesus and the apostles warned about the imminence of their appearance and the consequences this would bring (Mat 7:15-20; 1Timothy 4:1-3; 2Peter 2:1-3; 2Thessalonians2:3,4). But, they also fortold their coming destruction and the complete vindication of Christianity, the Bible, and God's right to rule the Earth (which, according to the Bible, he is not currently doing John 14:30; 1John 5:19).
The Bible is a fascinating book. Its wisdom has stood the test of time and brought peace and joy to those who have truly followed it. It has the promise, by God, of a coming time in which man will not be ruining the Earth, but instead will be taking care of it; a time in which no more corrupt politicians be dominating the people of the land for their injury; a time in which the truth about God will no longer be hidden or distorted by wicked religious leaders. It is certainly worth a read, to say the least. - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -8/+63Commentaries aren't the same thing as comments. A commentary is a book written with either devotional or scholarly information on a passage of Scripture. They're commonly used by Bible scholars to explain idiomatic expressions that don't translate well or to find historical and cultural background information to help read the text in context.
Edit: Thank you CiQuat. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -73/+127Its considered Geek/Hacker chic to be anti Christian.
Mind you Islam is responsible for the murder of countless people in the past 10 years, but these freaks see the Bible and Christians as the real enemy.
Go figure! - shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -16/+63yo flag.
Islam is not the cause of all the terrorism and murder, it's radical Islamic fundamentalists.
Radical religious types are dangerous no matter what faith it is. - Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -12/+53"No. You can expect the majority of digg to digg this down, simply because the majority is probably athiest/agnostic"
Ok but I'm still confused on why it would get Dugg down. It's a good resource for searching biblical quotes. (which even if you are atheistic/agnostic, are still pretty awesome)
Besides, if some self-professed neocon decides to quote the bible to you, you have a resource to call him on his *****. - mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -33/+67Come on man, its not that hard to understand that the Bible was written to a specific group of people by a human being who was being motivated by the Holy Spirit. It is sheer stupidity to expect humans to have an advanced concept in the science of the planet earth before the fact was discovered over 2000 years later. It doesn't take any credibility away from a book that speaks about the CHARACTER of God, not the SCIENCE of this planet. Read the bible for what it is supposed to be, not what you expect it to be.
- wwwdot1jesdotus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+42@ coheedcollapse -
Ironically, it seems you agree with the bible on your point. Jesus always avoided political discussion when the leaders tried to suck him into it. Also, the bible tells Christians not to push their message on people. When people asked Jesus to leave, he did. He respected their choice to not listen. "Christian" means "Christ-like" so people who don't follow the example of Jesus aren't exactly being Christians but hypocrites. - mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -26/+57Its a book that might actually do you some good....try reading it sometime.
- RaistlinMajere, on 10/12/2007, -15/+43These comments are sickening. Accusing any religion of intolerance is a joke when you are flagrantly demonstrating intolerance yourself...
- starvo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Well-informed Christians tend to be swell people who will respect your non-christian views, and no grudge you for having those views. Nor will they try to convert you, or make you feel bad or wrong for having such views.
Sadly, types like that seem to be in the minority. Or, the loud, and noisy rabble of the uber-fundie minority tends to drown out the even, and level-headed types. (And that's a ***** shame.)
Back on topic.. Would be interesting to see a version of this for other spiritual texts, like those used by Buddhists, Islamic, Sikh, Jewish, etc.. - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -14/+36Uhm no. I hate fundamentalist Christians and really have nothing against the whole bunch of religions as long as no one pushes their ***** onto me or pushes to make their religion law. I dugg the thing because it makes a book that a lot of people consider useful more accessible, even if personally I think it's just an almost interesting read and absolutely not something to base your life upon.
- FatMagic, on 10/12/2007, -20/+41And so did this guy - http://www.josh.org/apologetics/ - who tried to disprove Christianity. Traveled the world to "holy" places to see the archeology for himself - and found the claims of the Bible to be true. Oh and this guy - http://www.leestrobel.com/ - again who attempted to prove Christianity wrong, but found it true. And why aren't there thousands of others like these guys? Because it takes a person who throws away his pride, and honestly seeks the truth. Not someone who seeks the truth with a bias in mind. And a very small percentage of people are willing to do that. God made wise the simple.
- tgrossner, on 10/12/2007, -10/+30It never ceases to amaze me the level of venomous hatred that get spewed at the mention of religion here at Digg. If you are an Atheist, is it written in some Atheist code of action that you must taunt, ridicule, and denounce all things spiritual? What ever happened to "live and let live"? I ask you, what did religion ever do wrong to you to inspire such hatred? I am not talking about the far past. Everyone knows that the past if filled with shameful things perpetrated in the name of religion. No argument there. However much bad was done in the world in the name of God, it was not done with his blessing.
Is such ridicule necessary on your part? Its something to think about. - Malachai, on 10/12/2007, -17/+37I agree. It's amazing [and shameful] that most of the comments are negative based solely on the fact that it's Christian related.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Good argument man, you're just my type of guy. Unfortunately, a lot of religious folk only follow the portions of their holy books that they agree with or twist what they don't agree with into something else.
- Haohmaru, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I'll agree with that. But you said "mature" and this is Digg. :)
- ArcusOfSV, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21All athiests arent aholes. Just as with any group of people there are the normal ones and the idiots.
I am an athiest. Information exchange is cool. Hell if reading the bible online helps people figure some things out and get thier stuff together Im all for it. Doenst bother me at all. Plenty of crap on the internet. Some info on treating your fellow human being with respect and kindness from the bible cant be bad. Ever.
Again, all athiests arent *****.
I do agree that this is not really news though. - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -33/+51Well flag, I certainly agree there seems the anti-Christian thing seems to be common among the geek/hacker "oh-look-at-me-I'm-a-rebel" types, but I can't agree with your statement on Islam being responsible for murder.
The true ideals of Islam do not support murder. Those who take life are responsible for taking life, blaming it on their religion is simply an excuse for discrimination. In all reality, radical Islam's current state slightly mirror's a certain other religion's crusade many centuries ago, albeit the methods are considered less tasteful. But blame the people themselves, don't generalize them into what's actually a peaceful religion.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing the Koran get this kind of Web 2.0 makeover. Many people, myself included, do not completely understand the religion's true belief's and I think it would be good if we could have some searchable insight into it. - catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24King James seemed to think the Bible was a Wiki.
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -14/+31@saehn - Daniel and Revelation are both examples of what is called "apocalyptic literature." They are both couched in extremely heavy symbolism and are never taken literally by any serious Bible scholar (the authors of Left Behind don't count). Furthermore, they are intended as prophecies of what is to come, not scientific commentaries on the nature of the world.
- robbyjo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18But if I just need to look up certain phrases and not other features, why do I need to sign up?
- FatMagic, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22For sure Obsidian. I would not have known about it except via Digg. Thanks fifrenzy for posting it!
- wwwdot1jesdotus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18@ choeedcollapse -
Exactly, and unfortunately, the majority of people who claim to be Christians, actually do not represent what Christ represented. The result is that the general public writes off Christ because of the hypocritical, hateful "Christ-like" christians who actually aren't. - EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24"Everyone knows christians outnumber all others as far as population goes"
In America as a whole, maybe. But everyone who lives in America isn't a member of digg. It's mostly young, tech-loving kids. Most of the young people I know, or have come across online, aren't Christians - GTPilot, on 10/12/2007, -12/+27do you believe everything you read on the web?
- rages4calm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I disagree, comments should be welcome, people should have the right to state there opinions, as long as they can do so without slamming someone else's belief.
I myself am a christian but I would never step over someone and there belief, I love listening and reading other peoples beliefs and ideas as long as they remain in a mature manner. - wonderingfellow, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22It's difficult to read all of the comments for stuff like this on Digg. I'm a Christian. I read the Bible. I continue to study it and find the Truth that is contained in it. I'm not perfect. I've looked at porn on the net, I've drank, smoked, lied, cheated, been the the worst of the worse. I can't offer you a better explanation other than God has changed my life when I tried and couldn't. My life's not perfect nor am I, but God is. I can't explain everything the Bible contains nor do I have too. I can't answer the wrongs of Christianity or answer for the wrong that are spoken of in the Bible (just because it's in the Bible doesn't mean the Bible condones it).
All I can say is I hear a lot of anger and hurt in the comments here. I hear a lot of people that could be changed by God just like I was changed. I see a lot of cynicism and people trying to say God doesn't exist or is a fool and the people who believe in him are fools. Once I was hurting, once I was cynical, once I hated God. He didn't force me to change. I finally realized that knowing Him was the only way to change. Good luck to everyone! Find a modern Christian church who will care about "you" and not make you an outreach "project". Try it! If you have the courage to reject it try to have the courage to honestly investigate it. - Malachai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I wouldn't mind if it was simply stating an opinion, but the first ten or so were flames.
- ShaolinTiger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Ah, one of the topics guaranteed to ignite a flame war of monstrous proportions..
Heed the rules of Usenet peons....thou must not talk about:
1) Religion
2) Gun Laws
3) Abortion
4) Operating Systems - kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15@Cartoonboy,
Just a little reminder, ["The Government of the United States is in no sense founded on the Christian religion." - John Adams, 2nd President of the United States.] - oblongmouth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Religion isn't evil - people are evil.
Actually people are ***** idiots.
I'm not religious. I've been brought up by a Catholic mother & a muslim father - they use religion when it suits them, which is fine.
The only time I think of a god is when the bastard makes me wait for a bus when its pissing it down. - tommajor, on 10/12/2007, -10/+21flag, excuse me, some of the best geeks I know are Christian. In fact I happen to be one myself, I love digging around in the linux shell. In fact I made a Bible web2 site myself (with mediawiki) which I run from a server at my house... http://wikible.org
Being a geek doesn't imply rebel. - MrSidnet, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15@ wwwdot1jesdotus
I completly agree. Reminds me of that post

If that is what they think Christians are, it's no wonder people hate Christians. - GTPilot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Here's an NPR segment on a guy who actually has: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5052156
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10The burden of proof lies with the believer.
I don't need to prove that something exists when there is no tangible evidence of it, so the person who is claiming that it does exist, again when there is no tangible evidence is the one responsible for providing the proof - TimTim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Finding these well-informed Christians is the hard part. Christians are getting a bad reputation these days simply because they don't take the time to read the Bible!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Wow, look at the first 10 or so comments all buried, even if they disagree with the other! Has anyone seen anything like that before?
- Obsidian743, on 10/12/2007, -22/+30I wonder how many of these presumptious nay-sayers, who are so quick to judge these seemingly horrific anecdotes, have actually *studied* the Bible or have even bothered discussing them with well-informed Christians?
- S1mba, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Btw, the way what is up with "Registration required" just to search a Bible online? Why should I register just to search the Bible? When there are tons of other sites out there that will let me do it for free? No thanks.
- arkmtech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10To pray for the mislead is Christian. To believe you know who the mislead are, and that you know better than God how to change that, is to judge.
Instead of setting others' houses aflame, simply live life with a brightly-burning candle, and hope others will be attracted to it's light and warmth. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Again with the persecution complex. What is it with you people that you feel the need to think everyone is ganging up on you?
- Starr227, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Dear God,
I sure do love your new Web 2.0 website, Can you maybe add a Web Form where I can submit online Prayers? That would save me a lot of time, (Cut, Copy and Paste) and maybe some little Clips of what its like in heaven?
Omen - lebaige, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Making a mockery of something that means so much to so many in this world does nothing but polarize people. It's really sad that some of you supposed free thinkers feel such an overwhelming desire to piss on anyone that doesn't think like you.
I chose not to have religion in my life, and remain agnostic if anything. My children will have to make up their mind on their own when they reach an age they are able to do so, but I'm going to let them make that choice. There's nothing inherently evil in Christianity or religion in general. Why some people are so ravidly atheistic is beyond me. You're not any better than the people you claim to hate on the other side of the fence. -
