- 10goto10, on 07/14/2008, -0/+92How about "Thou shalt not unnecessarily smear your content over multiple pages"?
- eliburford, on 07/15/2008, -0/+24This article from SitePoint makes a few good points as to why this list is bollocks: http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2008/07/01/why-the- ...
- dasluvaluva, on 07/15/2008, -0/+22"Thou shalt be social"?
Yes, what we need are more businesses losing focus on their core offering in an attempt to integrate into some sort of social network. - spoogieking012, on 07/15/2008, -0/+13wrong. http://havenworks.com/
- jophillips, on 07/15/2008, -0/+13humm. I submitted that 20 days ago: http://digg.com/design/The_10_Commandments_of_Web_ ...
- steveoco, on 07/15/2008, -0/+10Making an article which could easily rad on one page, over two pages is sin in itself.
- rz8472, on 07/15/2008, -0/+10[UNDER CONSTRUCTION]
- quii, on 07/14/2008, -3/+12Kinda funny how thier second commandment is "Now shalt not hide content"
- lanalachat, on 07/14/2008, -4/+12"Thou shalt not overuse glassy reflections"?
apple is a sinner. - surferjoemaui, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6yup that wins.
- surferjoemaui, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6...and the most clutter award goes to -- Godaddy.com
- KingFog, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6What scares me the most is that site is fairly up-to-date!
How can anyone leave a website in that state? - badtiki, on 07/14/2008, -1/+7I bet a year from now when google into searching within flash - http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/06 ... - we are going to see a TON of flash sites hit the interwebs again - its going to be like 97 all over again
- ThePortlander, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5ahhhh isnt that cute a list of websites by someone over 50.
- Louis11, on 07/14/2008, -2/+7Or say, Windows Vista?
- myxyplik, on 07/15/2008, -1/+68. Thou shalt be social.
FAIL! Sites can be interactive, but they don't necessarily have to be "social". - webguydave, on 07/14/2008, -0/+5Although I concede it was a top ten list so to speak. I'm not sure who it's was trying to help. Designers? don't think so...business owners, maybe or was it just their need to discuss something considered popular and fill the pages...hmm probably. Not so much a complaint just a comentary as everybody needs to fill their pages i guess.
- horizonsonfire, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Oh god. My eyes.
- badtiki, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4If done properly, it doesn't have to. You don't need to develop a social network to become social, what most companies should do is develop an outlet for its customers to open up a dialog with the company. Offering company blogs, or newsletters with hosted postings to allow comments - hold polls on new products, or create a forum for product support, even allow reviews of products, or even post customer feedback letters - good and bad. All can be done, or one - either way this gives your customers a voice and adds a factor of credence to your company.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3You should be banned for submitting duplicates you *****
- OliveBiz, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Embracing technology is definitely important. It's funny how many IT companies don't end up using it themselves.
- AlaskaLoneWolf, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I know it sucks.
- unco, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2and how is google going to police keyword spamming in flash sites? sooo much easier to hide rubbish
- surferjoemaui, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2#1 wait 15 sec. for this ad to disappear or click the small button somewhere on this page.
- Audacitor, on 07/15/2008, -2/+4Apple invented that sin. And while we're on bad UI elements...
11. Put down the <blink> and <marquee> tags before someone gets hurt. - positron, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3A good design exists to hilight the content rather than for its own sake. Content isn't there to fill up whitespace.
- lanalachat, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2i don't think its so bad- no where NEAR the and tags!!
upcoming: blinking glassy buttons... lol - DCstewieG, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Ryan: Yes, the social networking feature of the Dunder Mifflin Infinity website was infiltrated by sexual predators.
Dwight: I don't understand why our website has to have social networking at all.
Jim: Yeah, I actually have to agree with Dwight on that one.
Ryan: It's all about creating a one stop shop consumer experience, alright? You're chatting with your friends, you're talking about the latest music, about the election; all of it is happening in our virtual paper store. - Xsecrets, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2hhhmmm maybe you could suggest a non dated font that one can be certain all computers have installed?
- danlowlite, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I was asked to make a web page that violated every rule on this by a marketing guy...I imagine for Business Week, that is the market for this kind of article.
- FrothyA, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1Developers, programmers, and webmasters should stop implementing and to get rid of Ajax Java script once and for all. I want clickable html links back!
- mattlohkamp, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2While I appreciate your position, I honestly feel that attempting to syndicate extensible e-commerce will incentivize out-of-the-box users, allowing companies to begin to reintermediate leading-edge partnerships. Now, to syndicate web-enabled functionalities and deliver intuitive action-items, we're basically talking about trying to synthesize sticky vortals, which will be tough without reaching the milestone of being able to revolutionize B2B e-markets. Don't you agree?
- theadvinci, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Really can't argue with that.
- BoneStamp, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1"Thou shalt not name your Web 2.0 company with an unnecessary surplus or dearth of vowels." Uh, then stop domain poaching and create more top level domain extensions.
- BoneStamp, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1The article doesn't talk about highlighting the content through design, it says "Aesthetic design can only go so far in making a site successful. Beautiful can't make up for empty."
- AlaskaLoneWolf, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1How about "Thou shall make all advertising humorous instead of irritating"
- NanoStuff, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Typography would be a lot more typographic if browsers finally supported font resources. There's only so much Arial and Georgia a person can take.
That and maybe one day someone will fix cleartype's immense suckage with large fonts. We're still in the friggin' stone age. - monkiboi, on 07/15/2008, -2/+3What does "10. Thou shalt make content king." have to do with design?
- BBeeson, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1What you were actually able to read it?!?
- dasluvaluva, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Many companies, mostly because of charlatans at "Web 2.0"conferences, have seen "Social Networking" as the savior of their business.
The strategy should ultimately be, "How can we utilize other consumer's data to help prospective users be more informed, thus more likely to buy?" Most of the focus on "Social Networking" is due to the same fascination companies have with another popular term: AJAX. - webguydave, on 07/14/2008, -3/+3I give you the thumbs up on this one, and I'm as guilty as the next for doing it.
- Kelway76, on 07/15/2008, -0/+0Google has already announced it is able to crawl flash sites. That doesn't make it a good website platform. All nice flash sites have the "Cool... oohh, wooo" factor going for about 60 seconds, and then when you realize you can't hit the frickin' "Back" button, you get tired of it real fast.
- cesarkohl, on 07/16/2008, -0/+0of course! that's business week man! or do you thought the gold was there? lol
- joelf, on 07/15/2008, -0/+0this list is for babies
- sdlifecycle, on 07/29/2008, -0/+0I have a dream that someday I can read about facts in 1 place, one time and not have to sift through thousands of pages of garbage and worry about someone spewing opinions for personal gain. A known side effect of web capitalism. Decent list but it will change every 6 months as needs change...I agree content is king - fact based content that is.
- jktress, on 07/15/2008, -0/+0Say what you will about the list. As a designer, when Cederholm, Shea, Vinh, and Zeldman et. al speak I listen.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -0/+0I realize that many designers will consider this a list of obvious rules, but based on the majority of web sites out there, it isn't. Moreover, I know from experience that when you're working with more than one person on a site (your clients, their copywriters, their advertising department, etc.) it's easy to get lost in the needs of specific parties, and the site as a whole can suffer. It's always important to take a step back and prioritize--make sure that the design doesn't overshadow the content, and that having too much of your content in Flash doesn't hurt your search rankings.
- hireprogrammer, on 07/19/2008, -0/+0A very basic list. must be for babies.
