- susanswilk, on 02/11/2008, -1/+30If I could Digg this 100 times, I would! It has: Excellent, compelling content. Great examples that support each principle, Well written and easy to read
- darkcss, on 02/11/2008, -2/+12F shaped Design
- HigherLogic, on 02/11/2008, -0/+8If you liked what this article (briefly) touched on, you gotta get "Don't Make Me Think" by Krug and "Prioritizing Web Usability" by Nielsen. The first sentence pretty much sums up what a great website should be:
"Usability and the utility, _not the visual design_, determine the success or failure of a web-site." - JPBimmer, on 02/11/2008, -1/+9I knew this was going to be a good list the second I saw "How do users think?" before they even get to the ten principles.
- richardPM, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6even though these things come up often, it is no doubt that the repetition is good for the web development community. newcomers need to be informed and dino's sometimes need to be reminded.
- Wolfghost, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6Seems like I've seen it more than 30 times. I wouldn't mind seeing it another 300 times on digg...if the quality of web sites improved. Too few actually get the point.
- FoxOrian, on 02/11/2008, -1/+7This is one of, if not, THE most helpful web design article I've seen pop up on Digg since I've been visiting it. I learned something from almost all ten points, and I'm certainly going to be taking them into consideration on my next project. Definite digg.
- unixalan, on 02/11/2008, -0/+5i didnt realli read it, i just scanned that article.....
- mcintoshbill, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4A must read for anyone who plans to build a new site. Although I must say the best advice I've ever heard on how to design your site was to design it like the users were "2 year olds who just drank 3 cans of red-bull". Most web users have incredibly low attention spans.
- chrisbarr, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4Agreed 100% - I've got "Don't Make Me Think" and it's a great book. A very helpful resource to refer too, especially when you have a client that wants a lot of text - you can actually explain to them why that's not the best idea.
- smek2, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4"Don’t make users think" -- but the world would be such a better place if it were filled with more users who are able to actually think.
- JPBimmer, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3There's target audience and there's actual audience. The majority of the people coming to any site are going to be from the latter group, and that's why having a good understanding of how "most" users look at the web is something important. Idiots who don't read any of your content and waste your bandwidth aren't idiots, they just didn't find anything you had to say important.
It's called a web browser for a reason. - monarch00, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3apparently not the correct spelling of "a lot"....
- BevansDesign, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3Seems to me they just took a lot of stuff from Krug's book "Don't Make Me Think".
- Haecceity, on 02/11/2008, -2/+5There's some very interesting stuff in the article. But...
How many people did like I did and skipped virtually everything before the first numbered point? Shows these people haven't applied what they know. Plus, these guys could seriously use a proofreader. Another important part of effective web design is proofreading. I mean, "Web users are inpatient." Really? Web users are in hospital for a brief time? And how do they square the advice, "Make use of effective writing," with a verbose and ungrammatical sentence like, "Since the visitor of the page is the only person who clicks the mouse and therefore decides everything, user-centric design has established as a standard approach for successful and profit-oriented web design"? - BevansDesign, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3Here's a rule they forgot to add: adding extra D's to a word means extra quality.
- undetected, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2Yeap. I've read most of those before, at one point or another. I'm thankful they've done a great job of summarizing all those points, with a short, easy to read explanation of each, and with samples. Like ashura001 said above, they summarized something that she had to read 150 pages for, and explained it better.
- TacitusBen, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2My day job is as a sales associate/ makeup artist, and this list actually has a lot of effective parallels to how to do demonstrations with clients. Understanding how they think, how to work within expectations, and how to communicate information clearly are all major parts of sales. This article is amazing, great digg!
- mikehill33, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2Good article, but just a summary of stuff that has been in books for years.
- shatteredmind, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2i dont have time to read this yet .. but from a short glance .. this looks like the first serious article .. i have ever seen in this area. all these "tips" and "lists" articles are mostly just random ideas by someone, but this looks like the author is actually relating to research done on the topic. wonderfull, just wonderfull .. i cant wait to read it!
- meez, on 02/11/2008, -1/+2Umm... Me... Speak for yourself.
- R3dpanda, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1It's good but...how many principles of web design can there be? I think there was another article like this one.
- GreySpec, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Excellent article indeed... I would recommend people to actually read the entire article if they are in any way remotely in this industry... There is a multitude of links that dive much deeper into the specific contexts, each of which are just as compelling as the original article.

http://chat.qlbe.com/ - ashura001, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I read this right after buying the web design textbook for my class at my college and it summarizes the entire 150 page book in a few paragraphs and explains it better.
Nice. - known, on 02/11/2008, -0/+111. Usability is inversely proportional to the number of mouse clicks for the user desired feature.
- sassyt, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Very informative! Managed to squeeze in the important points in an easy to read and concise post. Kudos will bookmark and share :)
- tybris, on 02/11/2008, -2/+3Good article, but in short: Keep It Simple, Stupid.
- peterjmag, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Very cool article. It's good to see it on a site that actually follows its own advice, as well...
- coustoe, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1Old stuff, but still good for any starting out.
- sam3, on 02/13/2008, -0/+1Interesting theory, but I don't buy it. Not all users think the same or read the same. So many things can effect how you read, if you want to get technical, environment, emotions, multi-tasking and on and on.
But, Dugg for the sake of argument and an article with actual substance. - gremos, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1and to leave this useless comment. Thanks
- WhatsUpWithJack, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Trying to incorporate ALL of those principles into a single website is nearly impossible. It's great that they have a website which exemplifies each tip, but is there really one website that does it all?
- tpclicker, on 02/11/2008, -1/+1Great tips here. My rule of thumb is to keep it simple.
- undetected, on 02/11/2008, -1/+1Agreed. Users are the number one cause of problems for all my apps. Apps work great until a user uses it.
- BooYaKaSha113, on 02/11/2008, -0/+0I am shocked this made the front page. Neither Scientology/Anonymous nor Ron Paul is mentioned even once. And moreover, the headline is very understated as there is no use of the adjectives/modifiers "Best", "Greatest" or "Most Useful Ever". Reminds me of how useful Digg used to be about a year ago.
- spullenza, on 02/11/2008, -0/+0Great article. I am always looking for additional information on a users(customers) perspective.
